The velocity-space distribution of the solar neighborhood stars shows complex substructures (moving groups) including the well-known Hercules stream. Recently, the Gaia observation revealed their detailed structures, but their origins are still in debate. We analyzed a high-resolution N-body simulation of a Milky Way (MW)-like galaxy. To find velocity-space distributions similar to that of the solar neighborhood stars, we used Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD), which is a metric to measure similarities between probability distributions. The KLD analysis shows the time evolution and the spatial variation of the velocity-space distribution. Velocity-space distributions with small KLDs (i.e. high similarities) are frequently but not always detected around in the simulated MW. In the velocity-map with smallest KLD, the velocity-space substructures are made from bar resonances.

The Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is one of the nearest open clusters, which we can directly compare to numerical simulations. We performed a simulation of star cluster formation similar to the ONC using our new N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, ASURA+BRIDGE. We found that the hierarchical formation of star clusters via clump mergers can explain the observed three peaks in the stellar age distribution as well as the dynamically anisotropic structures of the ONC.

Gravitational wave direct detections suggest that 30 M⊙ binary black holes (BBHs) commonly exist in the universe. One possible formation scenario of such BBHs is dynamical three-body encounters in dense star clusters. We performed a series of direct N-body simulations with a mass of 2500 and 10000 M⊙ and found a new channel for the formation of BBHs which is dominant in open clusters. In open clusters, the core-collapse time is shorter than in globular clusters, and therefore massive main-sequence (MS) binaries can form before they evolve to BHs. These MS binaries experience common envelope evolution and evolve to hard BBHs, which can merge within the Hubble time. The number of BBH mergers per unit mass obtained from our simulations reached 20–50 % of that for globular clusters, assuming an initial cluster mass function. Thus, open clusters can be a dominant formation site of hard BBHs.

Star clusters are often born as star-cluster systems, which include several stellar clumps. Such star-cluster complexes could have formed from turbulent molecular clouds. Since Gaia Data Release 2 provided us high quality velocity data of individual stars in known star-cluster complexes, we now can compare the velocity structures of the observed star-cluster complexes with simulated ones. We performed a series of N-body simulations for the formation of star-cluster complexes starting from turbulent molecular clouds. We measured the inter-cluster velocity dispersions of our simulated star-cluster complexes and compared them with the Carina region and NGC 2264. We found that the Carina region and NGC 2264 formed from molecular clouds with a mass of ∼4 × 105M⊙ and ∼4 × 104M⊙, respectively. In our simulations, we also found that the maximum cluster mass (Mc,max) in the complex follows ${M_{{\rm{c}},{\rm{max}}}} = 0.{\rm{2}}0M_g^{0.76}$, where Mg is the initial gas mass.

We study runaway stellar collisions in primordial star clusters and formation of intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). Using cosmological simulations, we identify eight atomic-cooling halos in which the star clusters form. We follow stellar and dark matter (DM) dynamics for 3Myr using hybrid N-body simulations. We find that the runaway stellar collisions occur in all star clusters and IMBHs with masses ∼400–1900M⊙ form. Performing additional N-body simulations, we explore evolutions of the IMBHs in the star clusters for 15 Myr. The IMBH masses grow via stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) to ∼700–2500 M⊙. The TDE rates are ∼0.3–1.3 Myr−1. DM motions affect the star cluster evolutions and reduce the TDE rates. The IMBHs may subsequently grow to SMBHs by gas supply through galaxy mergers or large-scale gas inflows, or they may remain within or around the clusters.

Abundances of heavy elements in dwarf galaxies reflect their early evolutionary histories. Recent astronomical observations have shown that there are star-to-star scatters in the abundances of r-process elements and the decreasing trend of Zn toward higher metallicity in extremely metal-poor stars. However, the enrichment of heavy elements is not well understood. Here we performed a series of high-resolution N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of dwarf galaxies. We find that neutron star mergers can explain ratios of r-process elements to iron in dwarf galaxies due to their suppressed star formation rates. We also find that stars with [Zn/Fe] ≳ 0.5 reflect the ejecta from electron-capture supernovae. Inhomogeneity of the metals in the interstellar medium causes the scatters of heavy elements. We estimate that the timescale of metal mixing is ≲ 40 Myr using heavy element abundances in metal-poor stars.

Neutron star mergers are one of the candidate astrophysical site(s) of r-process. Several chemical evolution studies however pointed out that the observed abundance of r-process is difficult to reproduce by neutron star mergers. In this study, we aim to clarify the enrichment of r-process elements in the Local Group dwarf galaxies. We carry out numerical simulations of galactic chemo-dynamical evolution using an N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, ASURA. We construct a chemo-dynamical evolution model for dwarf galaxies assuming that neutron star mergers are the major source of r-process elements. Our models reproduce the observed dispersion in [Eu/Fe] as a function of [Fe/H] with neutron star mergers with a merger time of 100 Myr. We find that star formation efficiency and metal mixing processes during the first ≲ 300 Myr of galaxy evolution are important to reproduce the observations. This study supports that neutron star mergers are a major site of r-process.

We simulate the formation and evolution of young star clusters from turbulent molecular clouds using smoothed-particle hydrodynamics and direct N-body methods. We find that the shape of the cluster mass function that originates from an individual molecular cloud is consistent with a Schechter function with power-law slopes of β = −1.73. The superposition of mass functions turn out to have a power-law slope of < −2. The mass of the most massive cluster formed from a single molecular cloud with mass Mg scales with 6.1 M0.51g. The molecular clouds that tend to form massive clusters are much denser than those typical found in the Milky Way. The velocity dispersion of such molecular clouds reaches 20km s−1 and it is consistent with the relative velocity of the molecular clouds observed near NGC 3603 and Westerlund 2, for which a triggered star formation by cloud-cloud collisions is suggested.
