Andermann et al. described in 1972 an autosomal recessive inherited syndrome which associates agenesis of the corpus callosum, mental deficiency, and a peripheral motor deficit. We had the opportunity to study in detail 15 patients affected by this syndrome. As in the cases previously reported, the families of these children all originated from Charlevoix County and the Saguenay-Lac St-Jean area in the Province of Quebec.

Clinically, these patients have a characteristic facies and moderate mental retardation associated with a progressive motor neuropathy leading to loss of ambulation by adolescence and progressive scoliosis. In 13 of these 15 patients, neuroradiological investigation has shown either total or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. In every patient in whom these tests were done, sensory nerve action potentials were absent and motor nerve conduction velocities reduced. We also found neurogenic abnormalities both on EMG and neuromuscular biopsies. These abnormalities are similar to those described in Friedreich’s ataxia and in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II, although in our patients the motor deficit is much more severe than in these diseases.

The pathogenesis of the peripheral nervous system involvement is still unknown since there have so far been no autopsy studies of this syndrome.

Intermittent oral or rectal administration of diazepam for the prophylactic treatment of febriie convulsions has given results comparable to the continuous use of phenobarbital while limiting side effects and risks of toxicity. Since we believe that nitrazepam is a better anticonvulsant than diazepam, we performed a study to evaluate the effectiveness of this medication in the prophylactic treatment of febrile convulsions. Nitrazepam was given only when the children had fever and almost exclusively in children with a high risk of recurrence (less than 12 months of age at first convulsion; atypical convulsion; one or several previous convulsions). Thirty one children with a high risk of recurrence received nitrazepam. The rate of recurrence in this group was 19.3% after a follow-up of 16 months, compared to 45.8% in 24 children who also had a high risk of recurrence but in whom the parents refused the medication or gave it inadequately (p<0.05). Fifty one children with a low risk of recurrence also were evaluated and followed for at least 12 months (mean 15.4 months). Six were treated with nitrazepam, mostly because of parental anxiety, and none had a recurrence; of the 45 untreated children in this group, 6 (13.6%) had another convulsion. These results show the efficiency of nitrazepam in the prophylactic treatment of febrile convulsions.

Two patients with recurrent aseptic meningitis are reported. Intracranial epidermoid tumors were eventually found in both patients. CSF changes in our first case with an epidermoid tumor were similar to those reported in Mollaret’s meningitis, with an initial polymorphonuclear pleocytosis early in each attack, followed by a lymphocytic predominance several days later. Large cells which proved to be macrophages were also seen in the CSF of this patient. Both patients had meningitis attacks for several years before the underlying epidermoid tumor was found. Mollaret’s meningitis remains a diagnosis of exclusion. These patients should remain tumor suspects for many years and deserve careful and repeated investigation.

Agricultural practices affect the biotic and abiotic conditions that determine food and shelter for carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). We hypothesised that carabid communities would respond differently to 18 years of contrasted cropping practices in cereal-based rotations. We measured the effects of tillage (MP: moldboard plough; CP: chisel plough; NT: no-till) and previous crop sequence (cereal monoculture versus cereal–forage/cereal–oilseed rotation) on carabid beetle activity density, diversity, and community structure in corn (Zea mays Linnaeus, Poaceae) at La Pocatière, Québec, Canada. Carabid beetles were sampled monthly from May to September 2006, using pitfall traps. Although 19 carabid species were observed, assemblages were dominated by Harpalus rufipes (De Geer), particularly in the second half of the season. Multivariate analyses indicated a strong affinity of carabid species for the NT treatment throughout the season. Crop sequence and tillage had no effect on diversity (Shannon's H′ ≤ 1.3) and evenness of carabid assemblage, but species richness and activity density were greater in NT than in tilled systems. Peak activity density of dominant species occurred at different times during the season, generally in accordance with preferred breeding season. Many species had greater activity density in NT than in tilled treatments. Because of their granivorous feeding habit, carabid populations such as that of H. rufipes could be an important asset to NT, given the limited weed management options available for this system.

We conducted a double-blind placebo study to investigate the claim that hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBO2) improves the cognitive status of children with cerebral palsy (CP). Of 111 children diagnosed with CP (aged 4 to 12 years), only 75 were suitable for neuropsychological testing, assessing attention, working memory, processing speed, and psychosocial functioning. The children received 40 sessions of HBO2 or sham treatment over a 2-month period. Children in the active treatment group were exposed for 1 hour to 100% oxygen at 1.75 atmospheres absolute (ATA), whereas those in the sham group received only air at 1.3 ATA. Children in both groups showed better self-control and significant improvements in auditory attention and visual working memory compared with the baseline. However, no statistical difference was found between the two treatments. Furthermore, the sham group improved significantly on eight dimensions of the Conners' Parent Rating Scale, whereas the active treatment group improved only on one dimension. Most of these positive changes persisted for 3 months. No improvements were observed in either group for verbal span, visual attention, or processing speed.
