In most of the literature on English phonology, historically prefixed words such as contain, respect or submit are seen as having no morphological structure synchronically. However, such words were treated as complex in the early generative literature and are still analysed in that way in part of the literature. In this paper, we seek to review the evidence for the claim that such words are simplex words, which predicts that they should pattern with words with no internal structure in their phonological and morphological behaviours and in psycholinguistic experiments. We show that the evidence does not support that claim and shows that these words should be treated as morphologically complex units, although they differ from words with productive morphology. As these words tend to be partly or entirely opaque semantically, this raises the question of how such structures may be learned. We argue that the recurrence of forms is the main factor leading to their identification and lay out a possible order of acquisition of various morphological structures. Finally, we argue that theories of phonology may account for this by allowing the reference to morphological constituents whose semantics are impoverished.
Narrow-spectrum insecticides are currently used to control populations of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in eastern Canada. However, these could have nontarget impacts on other caterpillars – some of which may serve as alternative or alternate hosts to key parasitoids – that are also susceptible to control tactics. This study was conducted to determine how the insecticides, Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki (Btk) and tebufenozide, used to control spruce budworm populations, impact caterpillar communities and associated parasitism rates. Post-treatment field sampling of caterpillars was conducted in 2018 and 2019 in New Brunswick, Canada, at sites treated with either Btk or tebufenozide and at control sites. Caterpillar species richness and abundance, community structure, and parasitism rates were assessed using molecular analyses for 659 collected caterpillars. We found that insecticide applications had no significant impact on abundance, species richness, or parasitism rate relative to the measurements made in the control sites. Nonetheless, a significantly higher caterpillar abundance and lower parasitism rate occurred in Btk-treated sites than in tebufenozide-treated sites. Overall, however, Btk and tebufenozide treatments did not negatively affect the non-budworm caterpillar community under the present conditions of low caterpillar densities, suggesting that parasitoids have alternative and alternate hosts after treatments that target the spruce budworm.
Decision-making about replacement or modification of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) must be patient-centered and clinically appropriate. We engaged both patients and health care professionals in a multi-method approach in order to recommend structures and processes that facilitate informed and shared decision-making.
Methods:
A systematic literature review (2000 to 2017) was performed focusing on the patient's perspective and the optimal organization of structures and processes for decision-making. A province-wide field evaluation based on medical chart review was carried out to provide ‘real world’ evidence in Québec's six ICD implanting centers (1 July to 31 December, 2016; N = 418). Patients and health care professionals reviewed the findings of the review and field evaluation, and deliberated recommendations in an anonymous manner by electronic mail. A joint meeting focused on proposed recommendations concerning shared decision-making.
Results:
The patients provided feedback on the literature review based on their ICD experience, and highlighted the need for better and more interactive decision aids, clinical information and time, and a private space for sensitive discussions. The field evaluation underlined the variability of treatment choices at the time of replacement and that more than one in ten patients had undergone ICD deactivation. Proposed recommendations focus on multi-disciplinary, integrated follow-up of patients and outline best practice for incorporating patient wishes and life objectives when discussing treatment options. The multi-round consultation process allowed both patients and professionals to co-construct recommendations with our evaluation team.
Conclusions:
This multi-method approach enriched our interpretation of literature and ‘real world’ data and facilitated identification and prioritization of important themes. Partnership with both patients and clinicians added a new and energizing dynamic to our evaluation and recommendation processes. We acknowledge the contribution of the members of the patient committee and the clinical experts committee.
Stratigraphic analyses of outcrops, shorelines, and diatoms from the southern Bolivian Altiplano (Uyuni-Coipasa basin) reveal two major lacustrine phases during the late-glacial period and the early Holocene, based on a chronology established by radiocarbon and U/Th control. A comparison of14C and230Th/234U ages shows that during times of high lake level, radiocarbon ages are valid. However, during low-water periods,14C ages must be corrected for a reservoir effect. The lacustrine Tauca phase started a little before 16,00014C yr B.P., and the lake level reached its maximum between 13,000 and 12,00014C yr B.P. A dry event (Ticaña) occurred after ca. 12,000 and before 950014C yr B.P. A moderate lacustrine oscillation (Coipasa event) occurred between ca. 9500 and 850014C yr B.P., using a reservoir-corrected conventional14C chronology. Comparisons between the lake-level chronology in the Uyuni-Coipasa basin and data from other southern tropical areas of South America suggest that the lacustrine evolution may reflect large-scale climatic changes.
Ambulance drivers often travel under stressful conditions at high speed while using vehicles with poor high-speed maneuverability. The occupant safety of ambulance vehicles has not yet been addressed by the automotive safety paradigm; particularly for the rear patient compartment. This study had two objectives: (1) to assess by survey the French Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to determine the layout of the vehicle most often used and the EMS personnel's behavior during transport; and (2) to conduct a crash test to analyze the injuries which may affect EMS personnel and patients in the rear patient compartment.
Method
Firstly, a survey was distributed to the 50 largest metropolitan French EMS programs. Secondly, a crash test was performed with a Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) in conditions closest to reality.
Results
Forty-nine of the 50 biggest metropolitan French EMS programs responded to the survey. This represents 108 French MICUs. During the last three years, 12 of 49 EMS programs (24%) identified at least one accident with an MICU, and six of these 12 (50%) suffered at least one death in those accidents. A crash test using a typical French EMS MICU showed that after impact of a collision, the ambulance was moved more than five meters with major consequences for all passengers. A study-approved human cadaver placed in the position of a potential patient was partially thrown from the stretcher with a head impact. The accelerometric reaction of the anthropomorphic manikin head was measured at 48G.
Conclusion
The crash test demonstrated a lack of safety for EMS personnel and patients in the rear compartment. It would be preferable if each piece of medical equipment were provided with a quick release system resistant to three-dimensional 10G forces. The kinetic changes undergone by the “patient” substitute on the stretcher would probably have an effect of causing injury pathology. This study highlights the need for more research and development in this area.

The cabbage seedpod weevil, Ceutorhynchus obstrictus (Marsham) [= C. assimilis (Paykull)] (Colonnelli 1993), is a univoltine species native to Europe that feeds on canola and other oilseed cruciferous plants. The adult overwinters in debris and soil outside fields and colonizes canola at the blooming stage (Dosdall et al. 2001). Eggs are laid singly into the immature pods and each larva consumes five to seven seeds before cutting a hole in the pod to wriggle out and pupate in the soil (Dmoch 1965). Yield losses are difficult to assess because the plant compensates for bud and pod injuries caused by insects or pathogens (Lamb 1989). Nevertheless, pod feeding by larvae causes much damage, as canola yields can be reduced from 15 to 35% (Homan and McCaffrey 1993). Feeding by adults can also be significant, as it can reduce oil content, seed weight, and seed germination (Buntin et al. 1995).
This paper shows the contribution of slow-wave coplanar waveguides on the performance of power amplifiers operating at millimeter-wave frequencies in CMOS-integrated technologies. These transmission lines present a quality factor Q two to three times higher than that of the conventional microstrip lines at the same characteristic impedance. To demonstrate the contribution of the slow-wave transmission lines on integrated millimeter-wave amplifiers performance, two Class-A single-stage power amplifiers (PA) operating at 60 GHz were designed in standard 40 nm CMOS technology. One of the power amplifiers incorporates only the microstrip lines, whereas slow-wave coplanar transmission lines are considered in the other one. Both amplifiers are biased in Class-A operation, drawing, respectively, 22 and 23 mA from 1.2 V supply. Compared to the power amplifier using conventional microstrip transmission lines, the one implemented with slow-wave transmission lines shows improved performances in terms of gain (5.6 dB against 3.3 dB), 1 dB output compression point (OCP1dB: 7 dBm against 5 dBm), saturated output power (Psat: >10 and 8 dBm, respectively), power-added efficiency (PAE: 16% instead of 6%), and die area without pads (Sdie: 0.059 mm2 against 0.069 mm2).
This study compares the normative expectations of 1315 Québécois survey-takers about the responsibilities of spouses and ex-spouses, on the one hand, and adult children and stepchildren, on the other hand, regarding the support they are to offer an elderly family member with incapacities. The comments of survey-takers in relation to fictional yet concrete scenario descriptions provided a basis with which to identify respondents' expectations along with the social factors surrounding these expectations. The results of this survey suggest that the nature and scale of support-related expectations vary according to the family tie with elderly relative. Expectations toward spouses are high and unmitigated, whereas expectations toward ex-spouses and adult stepchildren appear to be limited. Expectations toward adult children are more pronounced than those exhibited toward stepchildren. Where offspring are specifically concerned, expectations are strongly influenced by the given context; for this category of survey-taker, the demands of support should not interfere with their family life and career.
Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of falls-prevention programs designed for community-dwelling seniors using randomized designs. However, little is known about the feasibility of implementing these programs under natural conditions and about the success of these programs when delivered under such conditions. The objectives of this paper are to (a) describe a multifactorial falls-prevention program (called Stand Up!) designed for independent community-dwelling seniors and (b) present the results of an analysis of the practicability of implementing this program in community-based settings. The program was implemented in the context of an effectiveness study in 10 community-based organizations in the Montreal metropolitan area. Data pertaining to the reach and delivery of the program as well as participation level show that a falls-prevention program addressing multiple risk factors can be successfully implemented in community-based settings.
Comorbidity data between Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Social Phobia, studies of frequently reported worry themes, and various correlational studies have led to the idea that worries may have a social basis. This study investigates the social basis of worry in three samples with different ages. The samples consisted of 224 high-school students, 607 undergraduate students, and 125 older adults. All participants completed the Worry Domains Questionnaire (WDQ) and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ). We hypothesized that for each sample, the first factor extracted following factor analysis on WDQ items would reflect the most social content, and that social-related factors would be the best predictors of the global tendency to worry as measured by the PSWQ. Results supported the hypotheses with the exception of older adults, for whom the first extracted factor was not as obviously social as for the other two samples. Possible explanations are considered and theoretical and clinical implications are discussed.
During the flooding of primary lowland rain forest by the filling of a
hydroelectric reservoir in French Guiana, live-trapping was conducted on 175
subsequently formed islands. Different factors affecting the mammal trap
efficiency were analysed. The main results show the real complexity of the
sampling problem and the influence of the habitat disturbance due to the
flooding. The location and/or the type of traps influenced captures of
Dasypus novemcinctus, Proechimys spp., Metachirus nudicaudatus and Philander
opossum in relation to their foraging and/or locomotion behaviour, and to to their size. The conformation of the islands
(height and size) had no influence on the number of captures, nor on the species
richness. The number of captures increased with the number of trapnights during
the first water inflow and the level stretch. The best trapping success was observed
during the wet season, when the strong habitat modification and the forest fragmentation became more significant. It resulted from the reduction of available
land area and trophic resources. One year after the beginning of the water inflow, the decrease of the number of captures with the increasing
number of trapnights reflected a real decrease of the number of mammals on
the islands. The species richness increased with the number of trapnights in
all periods, and was also the highest during the wet season.
The dopamine D3 receptor gene (DRD3) is a meaningful candidate gene because it unifies the dopamine and the limbic hypotheses for schizophrenia. We tested for an allelic association between schizophrenia and the DRD3 Mscl alleles, hypothesising heterogeneity between childhood/early adolescence-onset schizophrenia (CO-SZ) and adult-onset schizophrenia (A-SZ).
Method
The frequencies of the DRD3 alleles were compared between 70 DSM-III-R schizophrenics (35 CO-SZ and 35 A-SZ) and 79 controls.
Results
Compared with the controls, the subsample of A-SZ, but not CO-SZ, showed an over-proportion (P = 0.025) of allele 1. The association was not found in the total sample, combining the two subsamples.
Conclusions
Consistently with former studies, our data suggest an aetiological heterogeneity between CO-SZ and A-SZ and a possible specificity of the excess of allele 1 to the familial form of schizophrenia and to schizophrenia with a better outcome.
Little is known about the long-term outcome of schizophrenia that has its onset during childhood and early adolescence (early-onset schizophrenia, or EO-SZ). Whether or not EO-SZ is an aetiologically separate form of schizophrenia (SZ) is unresolved.
Method
The study was a 14.8-year follow-up, using methods such as systematic sampling, evaluation of possible non-respondent bias, consensus best-estimate diagnoses (DSM–III–R) made independently in childhood and adulthood, measures of positive and negative dimensions, of non-psychotic behaviour disturbances (NPBD) and of developmental problems before the appearance of SZ.
Results
There was high stability of EO-SZ (n=40) diagnoses (mean onset at 14.0 years) until adulthood (mean age at follow-up 28.8 years) but a lower stability of positive and negative schizophrenic dimensions. There was a poor outcome of EO-SZ, a strong over-representation of males but few gender differences, and no effect of age of onset on clinical features and outcome.
Conclusions
EO-SZ taken as a whole shows no qualitative differences to adult-onset SZ. However, a distinction through the onset of preschizophrenic developmental problems or NPBD might be a way to investigate heterogeneity within EO-SZ.
The aim of this study was to verify the presence and stability across life of the positive/negative distinction in early-onset schizophrenia (EO-SZ) through a longitudinal factor analysis of the schizophrenic dimensions, and to identify the factors predicting several indices of long-term outcome for EO-SZ.
Method
Forty children consecutively referred for DSM–III–R schizophrenia (SZ) in a specific catchment area comprised the sample.
Results
Across a 14.8-year follow-up, longitudinal factor analysis identified two separate factors corresponding to the positive and negative symptom dimensions. We also observed that: the GAS rated over the last three years of adult illness and the severity of negative symptoms during the stabilised interepisode intervals in adulthood were the indices of adult outcome that were most easily predicted; and the best childhood predictors of adult outcome were premorbid functioning and severity of positive and negative symptoms during acute episodes.
Conclusions
The presence of premorbid non-psychotic behaviour disturbances (NPBD) and premorbid developmental problems was not related to severity of outcome, in contrast to the former variables.
Since the 1950s, the Library of the Université Laval has devoted a great deal of effort and time to its subject headings list. This list, the Répertoire de vedettes-matière (RVM), is an adaptation of LCSH. Sources from specialised thesauri such as the MeSH and AAT supplement the headings. Following a brief historical overview of the RVM, the methodology for integrating AAT descriptors into RVM is discussed.
