This article argues for domestic legislative regulation of global value chains to protect offshore workers. First, it outlines the policy reasons necessitating such legislation. Empirical evidence confirms that global value chains are a dominant feature of the global economy. It is contended that lead firms wield influence in global value chains in a manner which leads to poor outcomes for offshore workers. Second, the article sets out the minimum steps necessary for a domestic state to attribute the responsibility for transparency of global value chains to lead firms. Then, it proceeds to explore the possibilities and limits of the proposed scheme of regulation. Despite some complexities with implementing the scheme, it is argued that if domestic legislative regulation of global value chains strengthens even to a small extent the monitoring of global labour issues, it is worth pursuing.

Two-dimensional dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations are performed to simulate the increase in strength of ferritic superalloys strengthened by ordered β′(B2)–NiAl precipitates. Parametric studies for three precipitate volume fractions (10, 13, and 20%) and various radii (from 1 to 75 nm) predict strengthening via a mixture of precipitate bypassing and shearing by single- and super-dislocations of edge or screw character. DD strength contributions for various precipitate radii (for a 13% volume fraction) are compared to analytical models for ordered precipitate strengthening: good agreement exists in the overaged state, but not in the peak-aged and underaged states for either dislocation configurations. DD strength contributions, converted to hardness values, are compared to experimental hardness values from previously reported literature on a ferritic superalloy [Fe–10Cr–10Ni–6.5Al–3.4Mo–0.25Zr–0.005B (wt%)] aged at various temperatures and times. DD hardness values from the single-edge dislocation simulations accurately predict the experimental peak hardness, but not the under- and over-aged hardness values or trends. By incorporating the effect of secondary NiAl nanoprecipitates formed on cooling and solid solution strengthening of Fe in the primary precipitates, reasonable agreement is achieved in the overaged condition.

Over 5 thousand family members and close friends of Australian workers become survivors of sudden workplace death each year. Formal responses following the death are central to surviving families' ability to adapt, yet families' experiences of these responses are unknown. This study used in-depth interviews to explore 7 surviving family members' experiences of formal workplace death mechanisms: postdeath protocols; interactions with employers, unions, media and statutory authorities; stages of legal process including coronial inquests, prosecutions by the occupational health and safety (OHS) regulator, and civil action; and outcomes of judicial proceedings. Participants identified difficulties arising from insensitive treatment by authorities, and significant bureaucratic problems, including a lack of information, communication and support. Systematic research that fully examines families' needs and identifies organisational postdeath protocols is required to advance the management of institutional responses following workplace death and thereby improve outcomes for families.

In this prospective study, pulmonary blood flow was measured using transesophageal Doppler echocardiography to assess whether ventilation by means of external high frequency oscillation around a negative pressure baseline can increase pulmonary blood flow, compared to intermittent positive pressure ventilation, in five patients after the Fontan operation. Pulmonary blood flow was measured when patients were ventilated by means of intermittent positive pressure ventilation and again during equivalent negative pressure ventilation using the external oscillatory technique. When compared to that with intermittent positive pressure ventilation, ventilation using external high frequency oscillation increased pulmonary blood flow by 116 ±61.5% (p=0.013). These results show that ventilation using an external oscillatory device with a mean negative chamber pressure may provide hemodynamic advantages in patients requiring assisted ventilation after the Fontan operation.
