This study aimed to articulate the roles of social support and coping strategies in the relation between childhood maltreatment (CM) and subsequent major depressive disorder (MDD) with a comprehensive exploration of potential factors in a longitudinal community-based cohort. Parallel and serial mediation analyses were applied to estimate the direct effect (DE) (from CM to MDD) and indirect effects (from CM to MDD through social support and coping strategies, simultaneously and sequentially). Sociodemographic characteristics and genetic predispositions of MDD were considered in the modeling process. A total of 902 participants were included in the analyses. CM was significantly associated with MDD (DE coefficient (β) = 0.015, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.002∼0.028). This relation was partially mediated by social support (indirect β = 0.004, 95% CI = 0.0001∼0.008) and negative coping (indirect β = 0.013, 95% CI = 0.008∼0.020), respectively. Social support, positive coping, and negative coping also influenced each other and collectively mediated the association between CM and MDD. This study provides robust evidence that although CM has a detrimental effect on later-on MDD, social support and coping strategies could be viable solutions to minimize the risk of MDD. Intervention and prevention programs should primarily focus on weakening negative coping strategies, then strengthening social support and positive coping strategies.

Traditional belief revision usually considers generic logic formulas, whilst in practical applications some formulas might even be inappropriate for beliefs. For instance, the formula $p \wedge q$ is syntactically consistent and is also an acceptable belief when there are no restrictions, but it might become unacceptable under restrictions in some context. If we assume that p represents ‘manufacturing product A’ and q represents ‘manufacturing product B’, an example of such a context would be the knowledge that there are not enough resources to manufacture them both and, hence, $p \wedge q$ would not be an acceptable belief. In this article, we propose a generic framework for belief revision under restrictions. We consider restrictions of either fixed or dynamic nature, and devise several postulates to characterize the behaviour of changing beliefs when new evidence emerges or the restriction changes. Moreover, we show that there is a representation theorem for each type of restriction. Finally, we discuss belief revision of qualitative spatio-temporal information under restrictions as an application of this new framework.

Background: Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is used in the outpatient setting to treat infectious conditions that require a prolonged course of antimicrobials. OPAT has been shown to decrease length of hospital stay and healthcare costs without compromising patient care and has become a widely accepted practice nationally. Due to this trend, the study of OPAT is of vital importance and will continue to be relevant moving forward. Currently, few studies have explored risk factors associated with OPAT complications, and most are limited in their analysis by indication. Further work should be performed to expand upon what is currently known. We characterized factors associated with increased OPAT complication risk. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at 4 sites across NYU Langone Health in patients admitted from 2017 to 2020. We applied the following inclusion criteria: aged ≥18 years and discharged with OPAT. Complications were defined as follows: vascular-access-related (line occlusion, thrombosis, dislodgement, central-line associated bloodstream infection or CLABSI) and antimicrobial-related (laboratory derangement, drug reaction, Clostridioides difficile infection), all-cause 30-day readmission, and OPAT-related readmission. Data were obtained from electronic medical records and the OPAT database. This study was granted a waiver from informed consent by the NYU Institutional Review Board. Multivariate logistic regression was performed, adjusting for confounding variables (sex, age, hospital of admission, history of chronic medical conditions, line type, and line duration). Results: Overall, 1,846 patient encounters of 5,951 reviewed met inclusion criteria. The median age was 66 (IQR, 26), 42.2% were female. Moreover, 810 (44%) received a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) and 1,036 (56%) received a midline cathether. Also, 563 (30.5%) were discharged to subacute rehabilitation (SAR). The most frequent complications were line dislodgement (4.2% of all patients), laboratory derangement (3.0%), and drug reaction (2.4%). Furthermore, 27 patients (1.5%) developed CLABSI. Patients discharged to SAR were more likely to develop CLABSI (OR, 4.1l; P = .005), and they had higher rates of OPAT-related 30-day readmissions (OR, 2.675; P = .004) compared to those who were discharged home, after adjusting for key confounders. Conclusions: Discharge to SAR is strongly associated with increased risk of readmission for OPAT-related complications and CLABSI, after adjusting for key confounders. CLABSI prevention during SAR admission is a critically needed public health intervention.

This essay discusses several books, ancient and recent, on plagues to ask the question: Can we face death without turning away from it through historical narration? Can we write about death, which only afflicts individuals, without stripping death of its individuality? After briefly addressing these questions, I discuss five books, one from the ancient period (Thucydides’s Peloponnesian War), one from the late medieval period (Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron), one from the early modern period (Daniel Defoe’s A Journal of the Plague Year), and two from the modern period (Mary Shelley’s The Last Man, and Frank Snowden’s Epidemics and Society). These books not only come from different eras but also reflect different written responses to death—ancient history, story/fable, reportage, futuristic novel, and contemporary history. The essay concludes by considering a counterargument to its focus on death, an argument developed by Baruch Spinoza which claims that humans should think nothing less than of death.

In the present study we challenge the generally accepted view based primarily on L1 data that surface linguistic information decays rapidly during reading and that only propositional information is retained in memory. In two eye-tracking experiments, we show that both L1 and L2 adult readers retain verbatim information of a text. In particular, the reading behaviour of L2 German learners revealed that they were sensitive to both lexical (synonyms) and syntactic (active/passive alternation) substitutions during a second reading of the texts, while L1 exhibited only reduced sensitivity to the lexical substitutions. The results deliver an important piece of evidence that complies with several current processing (e.g., Shallow Structure Hypothesis), acquisition (Declarative/Procedural Model) and cognitive (e.g., Fuzzy Trace Theory) approaches and adds a new dimension to their empirical and theoretical basis.

Yair Mintzker's book on Jew Süss raises a series of provocative questions about German history and history itself, which this forum aims to address. Specifically, it presents four reflections on Mintzker's book that cover the following range of topics: Jay Howard Geller situates Mintzker's work within the historiography on Jewish biographies and antisemitic trials; Sarah Maza explores whether Mintzker pursues the venerable task of getting to the “truth” of who Joseph Oppeinhemer was, despite his claims to the contrary; Jesse Spohnholz considers Mintzker's book as a model of microhistory; and my essay takes a broader approach by confronting the central issue of self-interest in history.
