  • THE LATIN OF THE PASSIONES MARTYRVM OF LATE ANTIQUE ROME

  • A substantial number of passiones (some forty) of Roman martyrs was composed at Rome and its environs between the early fifth and late seventh century (c. 425 – c. 675). Although these texts have hitherto been neglected by students of the Latin language (not least because they are only available in early printed editions dating from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, none of which are easily accessible), they provide a valuable witness to changes in the language during that period, when, as a reflex of developments in the spoken language and of deterioration in educational standards, written Latin began to exhibit a rightward shift of verb satellites (change to VO-order in main clauses, placement of the infinitive after the modal auxiliary, placement of the dependent genitive after its noun etc.), as well as a number of associated linguistic features. These changes are illustrated by statistical analyses, the results of which are presented in accompanying tables.

  • In a ninth-century manuscript now in St Gallen (Stiftsbibliothek, 254) are found three Latin poems in three different metres dedicated by a poet who names himself as Lutting, in memory of his master Bede who, according to the first of the poems, died in AD 681 (and cannot, therefore, have been the much better known Bede of Monkwearmouth–Jarrow). In the St Gallen manuscript the poems are transmitted alongside Cuthbert's Epistola de obitu Bedae; judging from the language of Bede's ‘Death Song’ which it contains, the Epistola was copied from a Northumbrian exemplar, and the same is apparently true of the three Latin poems. The fact that the names of Lutting and his master Bede are found near to each other in the Durham Liber Vitae raises the possibility that they were together at Lindisfarne; and detailed metrical analysis indicates that two of the poems follow Hiberno-Latin metrical practice in significant ways, which also points to the Irish cultural milieu of Lindisfarne. In an Appendix, the poems are edited for the first time, with translation and commentary.

  • Summary

    The fenland abbey of Ramsey was founded in Anglo-Saxon England in 966. Fifty years later its most famous native son, the monk Byrhtferth was able to draw on the resources of a library containing slightly in excess of 100 titles. The search for books belonging to the early phases of Ramsey's library is thrown back on to the corpus of writings, in Latin and Old English, by Byrhtferth. These include computistical writings (a Latin Computus, and the Enchiridion, an introduction to the same Computus ), hagiography (Vita S. Oswaldi and Vita S. Ecgwini), and history (Historia regum), as well as a vast collectaneum of excerpts, classical, patristic and Carolingian, assembled to illustrate two treatises of Bede (De natura rerum and De temporum ratione), and known as the Glossae Bridferti in Bedam. An astronomical text which was apparently brought to Ramsey by Abbo and which is quoted on several occasions by Byrhtferth is the Astronomica of Hyginus.
