Erdős asked if, for every pair of positive integers g and k, there exists a graph H having girth (H) = k and the property that every r-colouring of the edges of H yields a monochromatic cycle Ck. The existence of such graphs H was confirmed by the third author and Ruciński.

We consider the related numerical problem of estimating the order of the smallest graph H with this property for given integers r and k. We show that there exists a graph H on R10k2; k15k3 vertices (where R = R(Ck; r) is the r-colour Ramsey number for the cycle Ck) having girth (H) = k and the Ramsey property that every r-colouring of the edges of H yields a monochromatic Ck Two related numerical problems regarding arithmetic progressions in subsets of the integers and cliques in graphs are also considered.

The size-Ramsey number of a graph F is the smallest number of edges in a graph G with the Ramsey property for F, that is, with the property that any 2-colouring of the edges of G contains a monochromatic copy of F. We prove that the size-Ramsey number of the grid graph on n × n vertices is bounded from above by n3+o(1).

In this note we study the emergence of Hamiltonian Berge cycles in random r-uniform hypergraphs. For $r\geq 3$ we prove an optimal stopping time result that if edges are sequentially added to an initially empty r-graph, then as soon as the minimum degree is at least 2, the hypergraph with high probability has such a cycle. In particular, this determines the threshold probability for Berge Hamiltonicity of the Erdős–Rényi random r-graph, and we also show that the 2-out random r-graph with high probability has such a cycle. We obtain similar results for weak Berge cycles as well, thus resolving a conjecture of Poole.

We study structural properties of graphs with bounded clique number and high minimum degree. In particular, we show that there exists a function L = L(r,ɛ) such that every Kr-free graph G on n vertices with minimum degree at least ((2r–5)/(2r–3)+ɛ)n is homomorphic to a Kr-free graph on at most L vertices. It is known that the required minimum degree condition is approximately best possible for this result.

For r = 3 this result was obtained by Łuczak (2006) and, more recently, Goddard and Lyle (2011) deduced the general case from Łuczak’s result. Łuczak’s proof was based on an application of Szemerédi’s regularity lemma and, as a consequence, it only gave rise to a tower-type bound on L(3, ɛ). The proof presented here replaces the application of the regularity lemma by a probabilistic argument, which yields a bound for L(r, ɛ) that is doubly exponential in poly(ɛ).

We study forcing pairs for quasirandom graphs. Chung, Graham, and Wilson initiated the study of families ${\mathcal{F}}$ of graphs with the property that if a large graph $G$ has approximately homomorphism density $p^{e(F)}$ for some fixed $p\in (0,1]$ for every $F\in {\mathcal{F}}$, then $G$ is quasirandom with density $p$. Such families ${\mathcal{F}}$ are said to be forcing. Several forcing families were found over the last three decades and characterizing all bipartite graphs $F$ such that $(K_{2},F)$ is a forcing pair is a well-known open problem in the area of quasirandom graphs, which is closely related to Sidorenko’s conjecture. In fact, most of the known forcing families involve bipartite graphs only.

We consider forcing pairs containing the triangle $K_{3}$. In particular, we show that if $(K_{2},F)$ is a forcing pair, then so is $(K_{3},F^{\rhd })$, where $F^{\rhd }$ is obtained from $F$ by replacing every edge of $F$ by a triangle (each of which introduces a new vertex). For the proof we first show that $(K_{3},C_{4}^{\rhd })$ is a forcing pair, which strengthens related results of Simonovits and Sós and of Conlon et al.

Bal and DeBiasio [Partitioning random graphs into monochromatic components, Electron. J. Combin. 24 (2017), Paper 1.18] put forward a conjecture concerning the threshold for the following Ramsey-type property for graphs G: every k-colouring of the edge set of G yields k pairwise vertex disjoint monochromatic trees that partition the whole vertex set of G. We determine the threshold for this property for two colours.

For k-uniform hypergraphs F and H and an integer r, let cr,F(H) denote the number of r-colourings of the set of hyperedges of H with no monochromatic copy of F, and let , where the maximum runs over all k-uniform hypergraphs on n vertices. Moreover, let ex(n,F) be the usual extremal or Turán function, i.e., the maximum number of hyperedges of an n-vertex k-uniform hypergraph which contains no copy of F.

For complete graphs F = Kℓ and r = 2, Erdős and Rothschild conjectured that c2,Kℓ(n) = 2ex(n,Kℓ). This conjecture was proved by Yuster for ℓ = 3 and by Alon, Balogh, Keevash and Sudakov for arbitrary ℓ. In this paper, we consider the question for hypergraphs and show that, in the special case when F is the Fano plane and r = 2 or 3, then cr,F(n) = rex(n,F), while cr,F(n) ≫ rex(n,F) for r ≥ 4.

Szemerédi's regularity lemma for graphs has proved to be a powerful tool with many subsequent applications. The objective of this paper is to extend the techniques developed by Nagle, Skokan, and the authors and obtain a stronger and more ‘user-friendly’ regularity lemma for hypergraphs.

We continue the study of regular partitions of hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain corresponding counting lemmas for the regularity lemmas for hypergraphs from our paper ‘Regular Partitions of Hypergraphs: Regularity Lemmas’ (in this issue).

The aim of this paper is to prove a Turán-type theorem for random graphs. For $\gamma >0$ and graphs $G$ and $H$, write $G\to_\gamma H$ if any $\gamma$-proportion of the edges of $G$ spans at least one copy of $H$ in $G$. We show that for every graph $H$ and every fixed real $\delta>0$, almost every graph $G$ in the binomial random graph model $\cG(n,q)$, with $q=q(n)\gg((\log n)^4/n)^{1/d(H)}$, satisfies $G\to_{(\chi(H)-2)/(\chi(H)-1)+\delta}H$, where as usual $\chi(H)$ denotes the chromatic number of $H$ and $d(H)$ is the ‘degeneracy number’ of $H$.

Since $K_l$, the complete graph on $l$ vertices, is $l$-chromatic and $(l-1)$-degenerate, we infer that for every $l\geq2$ and every fixed real $\delta>0$, almost every graph $G$ in the binomial random graph model $\cG(n,q)$, with $q=q(n)\gg((\log n)^4/n)^{1/(l-1)}$, satisfies $G\to_{(l-2)/(l-1)+\delta}K_l$.
