High-resolution surface velocity measurements and passive seismic observations from Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica, 40 km upstream from the grounding line are presented. These measurements indicate a complex relationship between the ocean tides and currents, basal conditions and ice-stream flow. Both the mean basal seismicity and the velocity of the ice stream are modulated by the tides. Seismic activity increases twice during each semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The tidal analysis shows the largest velocity variation is at the fortnightly period, with smaller variations superimposed at diurnal and semi-diurnal frequencies. The general pattern of the observed velocity is two velocity peaks during each semi-diurnal tidal cycle, but sometimes three peaks are observed. This pattern of two or three peaks is more regular during spring tides, when the largest-amplitude velocity variations are observed, than during neap tides. This is the first time that velocity and level of seismicity are shown to correlate and respond to tidal forcing as far as 40 km upstream from the grounding line of a large ice stream.

Introduction: Patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) are at risk for serious adverse events (SAE) after emergency department (ED) discharge. Endoscopy can aid in risk stratification but is not easily available. Therefore, stratifying using pre-endoscopic risk scores can aid ED physicians in disposition decisions. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to assess the predictive value of pre-endoscopic risk scores for risk-stratification of ED UGIB patients. Methods: We searched 4 databases from inception to March 2015 with search terms related to “UGIB” and “ED”. Inclusion criteria were: 1) adult UGIB patients presenting to the ED; 2) risk scores without endoscopic predictors developed and validated in variceal and non-variceal UGIB patients. We excluded case reports, reviews, abstracts, animal studies and commentaries. In 2 phases (screening and full-review), 2 reviewers independently screened articles for inclusion. SAE included 30-day death, recurrent bleeding and need for intervention. Two reviewers independently extracted patient level data and the consensus data was used for analysis. We report kappa for the article selection, and pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, positive and negative likelihood ratios and accuracy with 95% CI for the risk scores. Results: We identified 3,173 articles, of which 3,065 were excluded in phase I (kappa 0.88, 95% CI 0.83-0.93). In phase II, we included 16 of the 108 remaining articles (kappa 0.84, 95% CI 0.70-0.97); 3 studied Glasgow Blatchford Score (GBS), 1 clinical Rockall score (cRockall) and 2 AIMS65; 6 compared GBS and cRockall, 3 compared GBS, a modification of the GBS and cRockall and 1 compared the GBS and AIMS65. Overall, the accuracy of the GBS, cRockall and AIMS65 was 0.47 (95% CI 0.46-0.47), 0.47 (95% CI 0.46-0.49) and 0.62 (95% CI 0.61-0.62), respectively. The accuracy for the GBS with a cut-off score of 2 was 0.73 (95% CI 0.71-0.74). Conclusion: None of the risk scores identified by our systematic review were robust and hence, cannot be recommended for use in clinical practice. However, the GBS with a cut-off score of 2 was superior over other risk scores. Future prospective studies are needed to develop robust new scores for use in ED patients with UGIB.

Over the past 3 years, we have conducted a survey of 100 square degrees of the southern Galactic plane with the Mopra radiotelescope (HOPS). The survey includes observations of multiple spectral lines in the 12 mm band, with the most important being the water maser transition at 22.2 GHz and the non-metastable inversion transitions of ammonia. We report on initial results from HOPS, including the detection of 540 water masers, about two-thirds of which appear to be new detections. We also find widespread emission in the NH3 (1,1) line, as well as detec tions in the NH3 (2,2), (3,3), (6,6) and (9,9) lines.

Inverse Compton scattering is a promising method to implement a high brightness, ultra-short, energy tunable X-ray source at accelerator facilities. We have developed an inverse Compton backscattering X-ray source driven by the multi-10 TW laser installed at Daresbury. Hard X-rays, with spectral peaks ranging from 15 to 30 keV, depending on the scattering geometry, will be generated through the interaction of laser pulses with electron bunches delivered by the energy recovery linac machine, initially known as energy recovery linac prototype and subsequently renamed accelerators and lasers in combined experiments. X-ray pulses containing 9 × 107 photons per pulse will be created from head-on collisions, with a pulse duration comparable to the incoming electron bunch length. For transverse collisions 8 × 106 photons per pulse will be generated, where the laser pulse transit time defines the X-ray pulse duration. The peak spectral brightness is predicted to be ~1021 photons/(s mm2 mrad2 0.1% Δλ/λ).

This report from Commission 30 covers the salient areas in which major progress has been made in the triennium covered by the present volume. The principal scientific areas are: The Milky Way, star clusters, spectroscopic binaries, extrasolar planets, pulsating stars and stellar oscillations. Following these, an account is given of the progress in techniques and methodology for radial velocity determinations. Finally, a summary is given of the progress made by the working groups of the Commission, followed by a list of key papers in the triennium. A more extensive report also covering extragalactic work, which due to unforeseen circumstances could not be included here, can be found at the web page of Commission 30 (http://www.iau.org/IAU/Organization/divcom/).

We have measured the thermal activation energies of electrically active defects in 4H- and 6H-SiC implanted with either Al or B ions, using Thermal Admittance Spectroscopy. The net acceptor concentrations were monitored using room temperature low frequency Capacitance-Voltage measurements. The substrates were n/n+ epilayers. The implantations plus annealing produced p-type layers that were acceptable for characterization. The specimens were annealed in Ar at 1600 ° C, after which Ni Schottky diodes were fabricated on the specimens. Annealing times were 5, 15, 30, and 60 min. In some of the specimens, a shallow level was found that did not correspond to known levels. As the annealing progressed, energy shifts were noted for some of the detected levels. In some specimens, the implanted p-type impurity and the n-type residual dopants in the substrate were simultaneously detected. Measurements of electrically active ptype species were compared to “control” specimens implanted with Ar. From this comparison, we conclude that at least one shallow donor level is introduced into the bandgap by the implantation process, and is not annealed out. The defects associated with the implantation may affect actual device performance of diodes by destabilizing the lattice occupation of the implanted dopant atoms (energy shift with annealing), and act as lifetime killers.

Using B, V, R, I photometric parallaxes for components of wide binaries, new bolometric corrections by Bergeron et al. (1995) and cooling curves by Wood (1995), we have determined the white dwarf luminosity function (WDLF; Oswalt et al. 1996). A minimum age of 9.5+1.1−0.8 Gyr is implied for the Galactic disk; arbitrarily old models are consistent at the +2σ level. Smith (1997) confirms these results using a much larger sample and similar methodology. Using these same new models, Wood & Oswalt (1997) show that the WDLF of Liebert et al. (1988) yields an age of 7.5+0.5−0.5 Gyr, more than 20% younger than their original estimate.

Previous structural studies on titania- and zirconia-silica xerogels have shown the occurrence of homogeneous mixing at low metal content, and phase separation at high metal content. The use of additional, complementary, synchrotron-based methods can contribute to a fuller structural description of these materials. We present new x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and SAXS results for (ZrO2)x(SiO2)1-x, xerogels and compare them with previous results for (TiO2)x(SiO2)1-x xerogels. Significant differences between (TiO2)x(SiO2)1. and (ZrO2)X(SiO2)1-x xerogels are observed in the affects of heat treatment on the coordination of homogeneously mixed metal atoms, and in the development of phase separated metal oxide regions.

The SEM/EDS is a valuable tool in the pharmaceutical industry for aiding in the identification of isolated particles. It is a part of our systematic approach which proceeds from lower magnification techniques, e.g., stereomicroscope, to higher magnification techniques, eg., polarized light microscopy, and finally to the high magnification of SEM/EDS. Particles associated with pharmaceutical product rejects are due to a variety of sources, often due to the ubiquitous use of some materials, e.g., stainless steel alloys, in the manufacturing arena. Our particles of interest range in size from submicron to ≥ 50 μm (visible with the unaided eye), appearing in numerous shapes and/or colors. Any particles contained in a drug product or associated with the package are objectionable. Detection during production operations and/or during the terminal 100% inspection prior to market release will cause product rejection. In any case, foreign particles are not tolerated. Their identification leads to their source and thus proper corrective action.

Despite the relevance to a variety of materials applications, the electronic and bonding properties of spinel transition metal oxides are not well established. We report here the slow oxidation of CoO(100) to Co3O4, studied by photoemission (UPS and XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) with the aim of elucidating the valence band electronic structure of the Co3O4 spinel. The original Mott insulator picture of the parent CoO substrate has been revised in recent times, after careful analyses and extensive debate, to the more detailed charge-transfer insulator model which includes some admixture of oxygen 2p levels in the 3d-derived valence band. No equivalent band structure analysis has been performed on the spinel oxides, perhaps in part because of the greater complexity of the 56-atom unit cell with two different cation lattice sites and oxidation states. In this study, we determine the valence band structure of the spinel oxide and address the question of whether Co3O4 can be modeled as a charge-transfer insulator in analogy with its closely related rocksalt substrate.

We report near-infrared spectroscopy of three Seyfert galaxies. Velocity resolved spectra covering low excitation-potential transitions of [Ar III] 8.991 µm, [S IV] 10.514 µm, and [Ne II] 12.813 µm were obtained using the facility mid-infrared array spectrometer (SpectroCam) of the Palomar Observatory Hale 5-m Telescope, and low-resolution spectra covering [Mg V] 5.608 µm, [Ar II] 6.985 µm, and [Ne VI] 7.642 µm were obtained using the faint-object spectrograph (HIFOGS) of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO).

We find high contrast [Ar III] and [S IV] in each galaxy, and [Ne II] in NGC 1068 and NGC 4151 (12.8 µm data were not obtained on NGC 5506). The line profiles are well resolved. In NGC 1068 and NGC 4151, they are fit by singlecomponent Gaussians. However, in NGC 5506, evidence for a broad pedestal is seen in the [Ar III] and [S IV] spectra, similar to the broad Paβ component reported by Blanco et al. (1990) and Rix et al. (1990).

We present the result of an HI aperture synthesis mosaic of the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC), made recently with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The resolution of the mosaiced images is l′.0 (15 pc, using a distance to the LMC of 50 kpc). In contrast to its appearance at other wavelengths, the LMC is remarkably symmetrical in HI on the largest scales, with the bulk of the HI residing in a disk of diameter 8.°4 (7.3 kpc). Outer spiral structure is clearly seen, though the features appear to be due to differential rotation, therefore transient in nature. On small to medium scales, the combined action of numerous shells and supershells dominate the structures and motions of the HI gas in the LMC. A good correlation is seen between supershells previously identified in Hα (e.g. Meaburn 1980) and HI structures. We compare the results with a new wide-field Hα image.

It is shown that a separable, quasi-reflexive Banach space of deficiency one admits an equivalent norm such that its second conjugate space is smooth; this answers a question raised by Ivan Singer [Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 12 (1975), 407–416.

The purpose of this paper is to present five large prehistoric bronze vessels, from Wales, Ireland, and the north and south of England, found at various dates from the early nineteenth century to 1932, but published as yet imperfectly or not at all, and to consider, with reference to their affinities abroad, their significance for these islands’ Late Bronze and earliest Iron Ages. The starting-point for any such study must in general be the article in Archaeologia, vol. lxxx, by the late E. T. Leeds. In the twenty-seven years since he wrote, new finds and new work have indeed supplemented and somewhat varied his conclusions, but they leave us still deeply in his debt.
