  • Ferrierite: an Australian occurrence

  • An occurrence of the magnesian zeolite ferrierite at Unanderra, New South Wales, represents the first reported locality for this mineral in Australia. The ferrierite occurs in vesicles in latite and is associated with heulandite, laumontite, and calcite. Its crystal morphology is essentially similar to that of specimens from the type locality at Kamloops Lake in British Columbia. EPMA results are given for the Unanderra ferrierite and its chemistry relative to other known occurrences is discussed. Unanderra ferrierite contains appreciably more SrO2 than other ferrierites, but is significantly lower in K2O and Na2O.

  • Specimens of layered baryte containing a range of pyrite forms, including framboids, framboidal aggregates, spherulites, polyhedra, and zoned euhedral crystals from Kempfield, New South Wales, Australia, have been examined by mineragraphy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA). These investigations showed that the pyrite occurred in two forms—an arsenical variety containing approximately 5% arsenic in solid solution within the pyrite and a non-arsenical variety. EPMA studies indicate that the framboids and the cores of the zoned euhedral crystals have similar levels of arsenic and a genetic relationship is deduced to exist between these forms.

  • Volume VI of the new edition of The Cambridge Ancient History begins with Sparta attempting to consolidate its leadership of mainland Greece and ends with the death of Alexander the Great after he had conquered the Persian Empire and marched far into India. It is correspondingly wide-ranging in its treatment of the politics and economy, not only of old Greece, but of the Near East and the western Mediterranean. The century also saw the continued development of Classical Greek art and the moulding of Greek prose as an uniquely flexible means of expression. The formation of the great philosophical schools assured to Athens in her political decline a long future as a cultural centre, and established patterns of thought which dominated western civilization for two thousand years.

    ANTECEDENTS

    Higher education had come to Athens with the arrival of the sophists in the third and fourth quarters of the fifth century (CAH V 341–69), in order to meet the demands of a flourishing democracy for excellence in public speaking in Council, Assembly and the jury courts. Protagoras of Abdera, the earliest of these teachers to arrive in Athens, was the first to call himself a ‘sophist’, a term which came to be applied in a more or less loose way also to other teachers of rhetoric who appeared in Athens from abroad during the next two or three decades: Gorgias of Leontini, Prodicus of Ceos, Hippias of Elis, Thrasymachus of Chalcedon, Euthydemus and Dionysodorus of Chios, and a number of others. None of these men spent an extended period of time in Athens, and none had a fixed home there. In the course of their visits, they were entertained at the homes of prominent Athenians, would give public displays of their rhetorical skills, and accepted on an ad hoc basis any Athenian willing to pay a stated fee as their student. Any private home or public place (palaestra, gymnasium, or stoa) might serve as the locale of their instruction.

    Unlike the ‘natural philosophers’ of Ionia and of southern Italy, they were not interested in the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake but in preparing their students for a happy and successful life. Young upper-class Athenians believed success to be attained through the art of persuasion, and rhetoric was what the sophists delivered.

    This volume is unlike any which has preceded it. Earlier volumes have covered the whole of the Mediterranean and Near East. We hardly stray beyond Greece, deferring developments elsewhere to Volume VI. We are thus stressing that this is a period when, for the first and last time before the Romans, great political and military power on the one hand and cultural importance on the other, including the presence of historians to describe that power, are located in the same place. By contrast, Persia and the empires which preceded it were powerful but not articulate; the Jews were articulate but not powerful. This gives the volume a coherence which its predecessors and immediate successors lack.

    Some of the coherence arises from the nature of our sources, which make an Athenian standpoint hard to avoid. That point was noticed by Sallust in the first century B.C.:

    As I reckon it, the actions of the Athenians were indeed vast and magnificent, but rather less substantial than report makes them. But because writers of genius grew up there, Athenian deeds are renowned as the greatest throughout the world. The talent of those who did them is judged by the powers of praise of these outstanding literary geniuses. (Bell. Cat. 8.2—4)
