Background: There is presently no cure for locomotor deficits after spinal cord injury (SCI). Very few therapies effectively target the brain due to poor understanding of the brain’s role post-SCI. Newly developed tissue clearing techniques have permitted unbiased three-dimensional circuit analysis, opening new opportunities for SCI-related brain interrogation. Methods: We established a novel brain interrogation pipeline by optimizing mouse brain clearing, imaging, and atlas registration. We leveraged a spontaneous recovery lateral hemisection model to analyze whole brain cell activity and connectivity with the lumbar cord using cFos immunolabelling and virus-mediated projection tracing. We identified a functionally and anatomically dynamic region correlating with recovery and interrogated its locomotor role with optogenetics. We assessed deep brain electrical stimulation (DBS) of this region in a more clinically relevant rat contusion SCI using an established bipedal robotic interface. Results: We unexpectedly uncovered the lateral hypothalamus (LH) to functionally and anatomically correlate with recovery. LHVglut2 optogenetic stimulation significantly augmented locomotor function. LH DBS in rats acutely robustly augmented bipedal locomotion post-SCI. Conclusions: This is the first demonstration of the LH’s role in locomotion post-SCI and is a novel DBS target that robustly augmented locomotor function, dependent on LH glutamatergic cells. LH DBS may be a promising intervention in humans.

Plusieurs études montrent l’intérêt des programmes de remédiation cognitive et de psychoéducation dans la prise en charge des patients souffrant de schizophrénie dans le cadre de soins de réhabilitation psycho-sociale [1]. Ces programmes dispensés de façon isolée sont moins efficaces que ceux effectués dans une démarche de soins intégrative [2,3] et en impliquant l’ensemble des acteurs de soins et de réhabilitation (sanitaire, MDPH, médico-social, milieu professionnel). Depuis 2009, le centre intersectoriel Crisalid (pôle FJ5, CHI de Clermont de l’Oise, Picardie) propose un programme intégratif et personnalisé, appelé COMBIMOD (combinaison de modules de remédiation cognitive et d’éducation thérapeutique) destiné aux personnes souffrant de schizophrénie et à leurs proches habitant dans l’Oise, suivi par le sanitaire, le privé et le médico-social. Ce programme combine des modules de remédiation cognitive francophones validés à des modules d’éducation thérapeutique spécifiques construits autour des déficits cognitifs. L’objectif de ce poster est :

– de décrire au travers du parcours de soins de 3 personnes souffrant de schizophrénie la mise en place du programme COMBIMOD (de l’importance de : l’entretien motivationnel, l’évaluation globale [clinique, thérapeutique, neurocognitive, cognition sociale, fonctionnelle], la restitution du bilan, la mise en place d’un programme personnalisé et intégratif) jusqu’à la réalisation des objectifs professionnels ;

– montrer l’importance de l’articulation entre le sanitaire, le privé, le médico-social et le milieu professionnel.

Au terme du programme et grâce à un travail d’articulation entre le sanitaire (secteur : CMP, hôpital de jour, CATTP), la MDPH, le médico-social (centre de réadaptation professionnelle et de formation, ESAT de transition) les 3 patients se sont réinsérer professionnellement en milieu ordinaire.

Deficits in emotional processes are often observed by clinicians in anorexia nervosa and may have an impact on social functioning. Recognition of emotion was mostly investigated using visual stimuli as faces of emotional scenes. Only one study (Kucharska-Pietura et al., 2004) demonstrated impairments in emotional prosody using positive and negative valenced stimuli. However, this study did not provide a highlight for the identification of emotional bias (for example, to recognize an intense fear in a friendly voice). The aim of this study is to better understand the recognition of emotional prosody in anorexia nervosa using a wide range of positive, negative and neutral stimuli (Belin et al., 2008). In order to test emotion recognition biases in emotional prosody, we exposed 15 patients with anorexia nervosa and 15 healthy controls (HCs) to emotional vocal tasks asking them to rate emotional intensity on visual analog scales. In addition, we assessed clinical symptomatology and cognitive functioning for all participants. We showed that patients with anorexia nervosa provided higher intensity ratings on the non-target scales (e.g., surprise scale for fear stimuli) than HCs for sadness, fear and neutral voices. Furthermore, with the exception of neutral vocal stimuli, they provided the same intensity ratings on the target scales as the HCs. These findings suggested a bias in the processing of emotional prosody and may impact the social functioning of patients with anorexia nervosa. The bias may result from a sensorial deficit or a high-order cognitive dysfunction and have to be investigated in future studies.

Englerophytum and Synsepalum are two closely related genera of trees and shrubs from the African tropics. Previous molecular studies have shown that these genera collectively form a clade within the subfamily Chrysophylloideae (Sapotaceae). However, little is known about the inter-relationships of the taxa within the Englerophytum–Synsepalum clade. In this study, nuclear ribosomal DNA and plastid trnH–psbA sequences were used to estimate the phylogeny within the clade. Results indicate that the clade consists of six major lineages, two composed solely of taxa from the genus Englerophytum and four composed of taxa from the genus Synsepalum. Each lineage can be distinguished by suites of vegetative and floral characters. Leaf venation patterns, calyx fusion, style length and staminodal structure were among the most useful characters for distinguishing clades. Some of the subclades within the Englerophytum–Synsepalum clade were also found to closely fit descriptions of former genera, most of which were described by Aubréville, that have since been placed in synonymy with Englerophytum and Synsepalum. The clade with the type species of Englerophytum also contains the type species of the genera Wildemaniodoxa and Zeyherella, which are confirmed as synonyms.

Laser-based compact MeV X-ray sources are useful for a variety of applications such as radiography and active interrogation of nuclear materials. MeV X rays are typically generated by impinging the intense laser onto ~mm-thick high-Z foil. Here, we have characterized such a MeV X-ray source from 120 TW (80 J, 650 fs) laser interaction with a 1 mm-thick tantalum foil. Our measurements show X-ray temperature of 2.5 MeV, flux of 3 × 1012 photons/sr/shot, beam divergence of ~0.1 sr, conversion efficiency of ~1%, that is, ~1 J of MeV X rays out of 80 J incident laser, and source size of 80 m. Our measurement also shows that MeV X-ray yield and temperature is largely insensitive to nanosecond laser contrasts up to 10−5. Also, preliminary measurements of similar MeV X-ray source using a double-foil scheme, where the laser-driven hot electrons from a thin foil undergoing relativistic transparency impinging onto a second high-Z converter foil separated by 50–400 m, show MeV X-ray yield more than an order of magnitude lower compared with the single-foil results.

The percolation of water through waste landfill sites produces leachates with large amounts of pollutants. Clay barriers are often used to limit soil and underground water pollution. A better understanding of the interaction between ammonium smectite and carboxylic acids would contribute significantly to our understanding of such systems. The SWy-2 (Wyoming smectite) was exchanged with NH4+ and then batched with carboxylic acids (acetic, formic, chloroacetic and oxalic) in concentrations between 0.01 M and 1 M. The solid phases obtained were analysed chemically and characterized by infrared absorption spectroscopy (IR) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Ionic chromatography was used for the quantitative measurement of ammonium ions in the solution after the interaction. For the four acids, the interaction was characterized by a cationic exchange of NH4+ to H3O+. A partial exchange to Al3+ due to a partial dissolution of the sample in strong acidic medium was observed with chloroacetic and oxalic acids for which adsorption of molecules on the clay sample occurs, mainly through H-bonding with the cation. Moreover, the intercalation of oxalic acid in the interlayer space was highlighted.

An optically transparent and electrically small frequency modulation (FM) radio receiving antenna has been designed and fabricated from a mesh silver layer printed onto a glass substrate. The studied FM antenna consists of a transparent meandering monopole associated with a micrometric size MEtal Semiconductor Field Effect transistor. An optical transparency of 87% and a sheet resistance lower than 0.22 Ω/sq are obtained. The received signal strength indicator and the signal-to-noise ratio are both measured and compared with those of a commercial monopole antenna (a quarter-wave wire antenna). The transparent FM antenna exhibits similar radiofrequency performance with, in addition, a low visual impact.

Experimental data are presented showing maximum carbon C6+ ion energies obtained from nm-scaled targets in the relativistic transparent regime for laser intensities between 9 × 1019 and 2 × 1021 W/cm2. When combined with two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, these results show a steep linear scaling for carbon ions with the normalized laser amplitude a0 ($a_0 \propto \sqrt ( I)$). The results are in good agreement with a semi-analytic model that allows one to calculate the optimum thickness and the maximum ion energies as functions of a0 and the laser pulse duration τλ for ion acceleration in the relativistic-induced transparency regime. Following our results, ion energies exceeding 100 MeV/amu may be accessible with currently available laser systems.

Neonatal mortality in small ruminant livestock has remained stubbornly unchanging over the past 40 years, and represents a significant loss of farm income, contributes to wastage and affects animal welfare. Scientific knowledge about the biology of neonatal adaptation after birth has been accumulating but does not appear to have had an impact in improving survival. In this paper, we ask what might be the reasons for the lack of impact of the scientific studies of lamb and kid mortality, and suggest strategies to move forward. Biologically, it is clear that achieving a good intake of colostrum, as soon as possible after birth, is crucial for neonatal survival. This provides fuel for thermoregulation, passive immunological protection and is involved in the development of attachment between the ewe and lamb. The behaviour of the lamb in finding the udder and sucking rapidly after birth is a key component in ensuring sufficient colostrum is ingested. In experimental studies, the main risk factors for lamb mortality are low birthweight, particularly owing to poor maternal nutrition during gestation, birth difficulty, litter size and genetics, which can all be partly attributed to their effect on the speed with which the lamb reaches the udder and sucks. Similarly, on commercial farms, low birthweight and issues with sucking were identified as important contributors to mortality. In epidemiological studies, management factors such as providing assistance with difficult births, were found to be more important than risk factors associated with housing. Social science studies suggest that farmers generally have a positive attitude to improving neonatal mortality but may differ in beliefs about how this can be achieved, with some farmers believing they had no control over early lamb mortality. Facilitative approaches, where farmers and advisors work together to develop neonatal survival strategies, have been shown to be effective in achieving management goals, such as optimising ewe nutrition, that lead to reductions in lamb mortality. We conclude that scientific research is providing useful information on the biology underpinning neonatal survival, such as optimal birthweights, lamb vigour and understanding the importance of sufficient colostrum intake, but the transfer of that knowledge would benefit from an improved understanding of the psychology of management change on farm. Developing tailored solutions, on the basis of adequate farm records, that make use of the now substantial body of scientific literature on neonatal mortality will help to achieve lower neonatal mortality.

We present the first closed-loop separation control experiment using a novel, model-free strategy based on genetic programming, which we call ‘machine learning control’. The goal is to reduce the recirculation zone of backward-facing step flow at $\mathit{Re}_{h}=1350$ manipulated by a slotted jet and optically sensed by online particle image velocimetry. The feedback control law is optimized with respect to a cost functional based on the recirculation area and a penalization of the actuation. This optimization is performed employing genetic programming. After 12 generations comprised of 500 individuals, the algorithm converges to a feedback law which reduces the recirculation zone by 80 %. This machine learning control is benchmarked against the best periodic forcing which excites Kelvin–Helmholtz vortices. The machine learning control yields a new actuation mechanism resonating with the low-frequency flapping mode instability. This feedback control performs similarly to periodic forcing at the design condition but outperforms periodic forcing when the Reynolds number is varied by a factor two. The current study indicates that machine learning control can effectively explore and optimize new feedback actuation mechanisms in numerous experimental applications.

Les traitements utilisant des rayons X de basse énergie continuent à être réalisés mais en faible nombre. Le praticien se trouve en général près du patient pour maintenir l’appareil et expose donc ses yeux. Avec la modification envisagée de la limite maximale d’exposition du cristallin, des mesures ont été jugées nécessaires pour mieux en connaître l’exposition. Pour cela une simulation des traitements a été réalisée. Pour la dose d’un traitement superficiel de 42 Gy, l’exposition du cristallin derrière des verres radio atténuateurs se situe entre 130 et 43 μSv pour des distances entre 40 et 60 cm. Pour l’intra cavitaire les valeurs obtenues sont vingt fois plus faibles. L’atténuation par les verres est supérieure à 90 %. Le port des lunettes avec verres radio atténuateurs permet de minimiser la dose au cristallin de façon significative. L’application de la nouvelle limite maximale n’aura pas d’impact sur le nombre de traitements.

In this paper, a subspace fitting method is proposed to update, in the time domain, the finite element model of a rotating machine. The procedure is achieved by minimizing an error norm, leading to the comparison between experimental and theoretical observability matrices. Experimental observability matrix is obtained through a MOESP subspace identification algorithm, by projecting the output signal onto some appropriate subspaces, resulting in a cancellation of input excitations and noises. The theoretical observability matrix is obtained from modal parameters of a finite element model of the structure. The minimization procedure is carried out through a Gauss-Newton algorithm. The method is applied to determine the foundation stiffness of an experimental rotating machine subject to a random noise.

Developments of composites materials had begun in the 1970's. They aimed in improving mechanical properties due to the presence of reinforcement particles. The addition of particles in a matrix led to different modifications: considering the nature of the phases and the microstructure, we can mention interface reactivity between matrix and particles, changes in the chemical composition of the matrix and modified kinetics of microstructure evolution in the matrix (as compared to the matrix without particles); considering the mechanical aspects, thermal stresses may be generated due to the differences in expansion coefficients between the particles and the matrix, or any changes in the matrix leading to a phase transformation. In the present work, we studied the evolution of the phases and the behavior of a steel based MMC during thermal treatments, for which a phase transformation occurred on cooling. Experiments and numerical simulation are considered.

We present the latest results of our on-going closed-loop “end-to-end” numerical adaptive optics (AO) simulations concerning both a standard-AO and a three-star ground-layer AO system for a near-infrared 2-m class telescope at Dome C, Antarctica. We demonstrate that Dome C is an ideal site for wide-field AO-aided astronomy, define in details the AO system(s) optimized for the median turbulence profile considered, and finally show that a ~0.3 Strehl ratio and 200-mas-wide stable point-spread function is reached in band J on at least a 15'-diameter field.

The insertion site polymorphism of the copia, mdg1, mdg3, gypsy, and P transposable elements was analysed by in situ hybridization to the polytene chromosomes in genomes of males from a natural population of Drosophila melanogaster. Parameters of various theoretical models of the population biology of transposable elements were estimated from our data, and different hypotheses explaining TE copy number containment were tested. The copia, mdg1 and gypsy elements show evidence for a deficiency of insertions on the X chromosomes, a result consistent with selection against the mutational effects of insertions. On the contrary, mdg3 and P copy numbers fit a neutral model with a balance between regulated transposition and excisions. There is no strong evidence of a systematic accumulation of elements in the distal and proximal regions of the chromosomes where crossing over and ectopic exchanges are reduced. For all chromosome arms but 3L, however, the TE site density increases from the proximal to the distal parts of the chromosomes (the centromeric regions were excluded in this analysis) with sometimes a sharp decrease in density at the extreme tip, following in part the exchange coefficient. The way the copy number of TEs is contained in genomes depends thus on the element considered, and on various forces acting simultaneously, indicating that models of TE dynamics should include details of each element.

This paper presents a general method to identify the geometric parameters of robots. An algorithm is given to calculate the identifiable geometric parameters. The robot location and the tool location parameters are taken into account. The algorithm is generalized to tree structure robots. The problem of selecting the optimum robot configurations to be used during the identification is discussed and a solution is proposed.

The Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature (WG-PSN) develops, maintains and publishes guidelines for naming natural satellites of planets and surface features on all solar system bodies except Earth. When required the WG approves lists of new nomenclature, with accompanying explanatory notes, based on the established guidelines. Approved names are immediately added into the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature. Objections based on significant, substantive problems may be submitted within a 3-months period, and will be ruled on by Division III.

GaN epilayers were grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) on z- and x-cut lithium niobate substrates. Ex-situ characterizations of the epilayers by means of scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering measurements have revealed same growth features on both substrates. The observation of the morphology shows homogeneous and relatively smooth surface. The shape and density of GaN islands as well as the observed columnar growth mode are not dependent of the orientation of the LN substrates. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 450 nm thick GaN layers grown at 730 °C on z- and x-cuts showed that both GaN layers reveal the same crystallographic orientation, i.e. c-axis orientation normal to the substrate plane and in-plane orientation that coincides with the primary axis of LN substrates. The Raman scattering measurements confirm the growth of an oriented epitaxial GaN layer on LN substrate. Moreover, the deposited layer exhibit a quite good homogeneity, since the Raman spectra recorded for different positions in the layer do not reveal any significant variations in their relative intensities and frequency shifts.
