In this fifth paper of the series, we examine the spectroscopy and morphology of four southern Galactic planetary nebulae Hen 2-141, NGC 5307, IC 2553, and PB 6 using new integral field spectroscopy data. The morphologies and ionisation structures of the sample are given as a set of emission-line maps. In addition, the physical conditions, chemical compositions, and kinematical characteristics of these objects are derived. The results show that PB 6 and Hen 2-141 are of very high excitation classes and IC 2553 and NGC 5307 are mid to high excitation objects. The elemental abundances reveal that PB 6 is of Type I, Hen 2-141 and IC 2553 are of Type IIa, and NGC 5307 is of Type IIb/III. The observations unveil the presence of well-defined low-ionisation structures or ‘knots’ in all objects. The diagnostic diagrams reveal that the excitation mechanism of these knots is probably by photoionisation of dense material by the nebular central stars. The physical analysis of six of these knots show no significant differences with their surrounding nebular gas, except their lower electron densities. In spite of the enhancement of the low-ionisation emission lines of these knots, their chemical abundances are nearly comparable to their surrounding nebulae, with the exception of perhaps slightly higher nitrogen abundances in the NGC 5307 knots. The integrated spectrum of IC 2553 reveals that nearly all key lines that have led researchers to characterise its central star as a weak-emission line star type are in fact of nebular origin.

This paper presents the first major data release and survey description for the ANU WiFeS SuperNovA Programme. ANU WiFeS SuperNovA Programme is an ongoing supernova spectroscopy campaign utilising the Wide Field Spectrograph on the Australian National University 2.3-m telescope. The first and primary data release of this programme (AWSNAP-DR1) releases 357 spectra of 175 unique objects collected over 82 equivalent full nights of observing from 2012 July to 2015 August. These spectra have been made publicly available via the WISEREP supernova spectroscopy repository.

We analyse the ANU WiFeS SuperNovA Programme sample of Type Ia supernova spectra, including measurements of narrow sodium absorption features afforded by the high spectral resolution of the Wide Field Spectrograph instrument. In some cases, we were able to use the integral-field nature of the Wide Field Spectrograph instrument to measure the rotation velocity of the SN host galaxy near the SN location in order to obtain precision sodium absorption velocities. We also present an extensive time series of SN 2012dn, including a near-nebular spectrum which both confirms its ‘super-Chandrasekhar’ status and enables measurement of the sub-solar host metallicity at the SN site.

The recently completed HI mosaic survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (Kim et al. 1997) reveals complex structure in the interstellar medium, including filaments, arcs, holes and shells. We have catalogued giant and supergiant HI shells and searched for correlations with Hα emission, using a new image taken with a camera lens mounted on the 16-inch telescope at Siding Spring Observatory.

It is impossible in half an hour to do justice to the vast literature on Shockwaves in interstellar space. Here, an attempt is made to identify outstanding problems with particular regard to the optical spectrum and to determine what physical data can be relatively unambiguously obtained from interpretation of this.

J. Rahe of Bamberg reported on IUE observations of comets Sargent (1978) and Bradfield (1980).

The relative importance of the stellar sources contributing to the production matrix of the heavy elements up to iron is reviewed. Three main element groups may be distinguished: (a) oxygen and the alpha-process elements; (b) the iron-peak group; (c) helium, carbon and nitrogen. Each of these is produced in stars of a different mass range and in different ways, and it is shown that an examination of metallicity-metallicity relationships can be used to constrain models of the history of star formation, stellar evolution, and the initial mass function in galaxies.

We can conclude that in the case of our local solar neighbourhood the initial Fe/O ratio was set by Type II supernovae, but that Type I½ supernovae were never important. Iron is produced by the Type I deflagration supernovae on a time-scale comparable to the infall time-scale of the gas. Carbon is produced by dredge-up in low-mass stars, but nitrogen is shown to be produced both in the stellar winds of massive stars, and in higher mass stars which give rise to the Type I planetary nebulae.

Our knowledge of the universe comes from recording the photon and particle fluxes incident on the Earth from space. We thus require sensitive measurement across the entire energy spectrum, using large telescopes with efficient instrumentation located on superb sites. Technological advances and engineering constraints are nearing the point where we are recording as many photons arriving at a site as is possible. Major advances in the future will come from improving the quality of the site. The ultimate site is, of course, beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, such as on the Moon, but economic limitations prevent our exploiting this avenue to the degree that the scientific community desires. Here we describe an alternative, which offers many of the advantages of space for a fraction of the cost: the Antarctic Plateau.

This document is the final Phase A Science Report of the Australian LYMAN Science Working Group, and describes in detail the scientific objectives, technical feasibility, and engineering implementation of the LYMAN mission as developed in the Australian studies.

It now appears almost certain that the precursor of SN 1987a was the brighter of the components of Sk-69 202, a blue supergiant, with a precursor mass of perhaps 12-16 solar masses. Prior to the explosion the precursor had a core mass of order six solar masses, and 0.1 to 0.2 solar masses of residual hydrogen envelope. The compact nature of this star can account for many of the odd features of the subsequent light curve and spectral evolution.

An analysis of the light curve and colour evolution shows four distinct epochs, which probably relate to the initial expansion of the fireball and the escape of shock-deposited thermal energy, the hydrogen-rich layers becoming optically thin, the exposure of the helium core, and the increasing transparency of the helium core.

The supernova appeared to be at its maximum on May 10, but is dimmer than a normal Type II because its light is apparently derived from recombinations and the radioactive decay of 56Ni to 56Co to 56Fe rather than by the thermal energy deposited by the passage of the shock.

This paper describes the first results from a 20 deg2 mosaic of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in the λ21-cm line of neutral hydrogen. The mosaic consists of 320 separate pointings with the 375-m array of the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The angular resolution is 1′· 5 (26 pc, for a distance of 60 kpc) and the velocity resolution is l·6kms−1. The images reveal a structure of remarkable complexity, with much of the spatial power contained in high-brightness temperature compact knots and filaments. Numerous wind-blown ‘bubbles’ and ‘supershells’ are evident in the data, both inside and outside the stellar confines of the SMC. Some high-density H I regions are seen to correlate with Hα regions, indicating sites of current star formation. However, many high-column-density H I regions are devoid of optical emission and may represent regions of future star formation. These regions may be under-abundant in diffuse molecular gas due to the high radiation field and low metallicity of the SMC.

Angular diameters of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae obtained using speckle interferometry on the AAT are presented. The mass of ionized gas in each nebula is derived from the angular diameter and published Hβ line fluxes; the derived masses range from 0.005M⊙ to 0.19M⊙, with a mean value of 0.08M⊙. All the planetary nebulae observed are relatively small (diameter ≲0.13pc), young (age ≲ 2500 years), bright and dense. They are therefore almost certainly only partially ionized, so that the masses derived for the ionized parts of the nebula are lower limits to the total nebula mass.

This is a preliminary report on the first Strömgren–Hβ photometric survey of yellow supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds. Less luminous supergiants have been chosen in preference for this program in order to facilitate calculation of their physical parameters. This will not only provide a basis for future detailed spectral analysis of these stars, but will allow a better calibration of the colours derived from model atmospheres for this type of star. The colours of these stars are more affected by changes in metallicity than the hotter stars more frequently studied, and since they are also young, they reflect the metallicity of their local InterStellar Medium (ISM). If indeed the Strömgren abundance index m1 can be calibrated successfully for these stars, then their observation in any galaxy will provide the metallicity of that particular ISM. Our results show that it is important for future colours to be calculated over the range of turbulent velocities important for supergiants.

The possibilities of modelling the diffraction profiles from bimodal microstructure in computer program MSTRUCT are demonstrated on two examples. A special “Double Component” profile effect can be utilized for such problems. At first it was applied to an analysis of a mixture of two nanocrystalline anatase powders with different crystallite sizes and the relative ratio of both components was determined from X-ray diffraction data. In the second case study, diffraction peaks from a pure polycrystalline copper sample treated by equal channel angular pressing were fitted using a two-phase model of large recrystallized defect-free grains and ultrafine crystallites with high dislocation density. The method is shown to be suitable for determination of the relative fraction of the microstructural components as well as other parameters (e.g. dislocation density).

We analysed the Spitzer maps of Stephan's Quintet in order to investigate the nature of the dust emission associated with the X-ray emitting regions of the large scale intergalactic shock and of the group halo. This emission can in principle be powered by dust-gas particle collisions, thus providing efficient cooling of the hot gas. However the results of our analysis suggest that the dust emission from those regions is mostly powered by photons. Nonetheless dust collisional heating could be important in determining the cooling of the IGM gas and the large scale star formation morphology observed in SQ.

Using an optically-unbiased selection process based on the HIPASS neutral hydrogen survey, we have identified a sample of over 170 spatially isolated, gas-rich dwarf galaxies in the southern hemisphere with cz between 350 and 1500 km s−1, with R-band luminosities and HI masses less than the Small Magellanic Cloud, most of which lack spectroscopic data. This paper summarises our survey criteria and procedures and nebular abundance measurements using the WiFeS IFU on the ANU 2.3 m telescope. (See longer version on astro.ph.)

High velocity shocks may provide an important source of ionizing radiation in the NLR of active galaxies. Here we present preliminary results of a new grid of MAPPINGS III shock models for shock velocities up to 1000 km s−1. We present results of a self-consistent model of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of starburst galaxies. Two parameters control the IR SED, the mean pressure in the ISM and the destruction timescale of molecular clouds. Adding a simplified AGN spectrum provides mixing lines on IRAS color : color diagrams. The winds of massive stars play a major role in setting up and controlling both the phase structure of the interstellar medium in galaxies and the vertical distribution of gas in galactic disks. In turn, these processes provide feedback into control of the star formation rate. Thanks to their proximity, these processes can be studied in detail in the Magellanic Clouds. Here we describe the results of a deep emission-line image survey of the ring nebula population, and a global high-resolution H I and H II survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud. These data provide a new insight into the process of feedback between the disk and the halo gas in disk galaxies in general, and the LMC in particular.

We present the results of an HI aperture synthesis mosaic of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), made by combining data from 1344 separate pointing centers using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The resolution of the mosaiced image is 1′ (15 pc, using a distance to the LMC of 50 kpc).

We present the results of our major HST study of the evolution of PN in the Magellanic Clouds. This consists of imaging studies in [O III] and FOS UV spectroscopy. These data are then used in theoretical photoionisation models in conjuction with ground-based spectrophotometry, absolute flux and expansion velocity and density to derive self consistent diameters, ages, masses, and nebular abundances and to accurately place the central stars on the H-R Diagram. We find that observed sizes and ages can be reconciled with evolutionary theory provided that the He-burners outnumber the H-burners in the approximate ratio 2:1. For the LMC observed abundance patterns are qualitatively consistent with the (mass-dependent) operation of the various chemical dredge-up processes as predicted by theory. However, the observed dredge-up efficiencies do not agree with current theory. Finally, since core masses are determined with adequate precision, we are able to derive, for the first time, the metallicity age relation for of the LMC. We find that the base metallicity of the LMC rapidly increased ∼ 2 Gyr ago, consistent with the age of the burst of star formation inferred from field stars and clusters.
