We present the NLTE abundances of 10 chemical species in 65 very metal-poor stars in eight dSphs and the Milky Way halo. The classical dSphs Sculptor, Ursa Minor, Sextans, and Fornax reveal a similar plateau at [α/Fe] = 0.3 for each of Mg, Ca, and Ti, similarly to the MW halo. We provide the evidence for a decline in α/Fe in the Boötes I UFD, that is probably due to the ejecta of SNeIa. The dichotomy in the [Sr/Ba] versus [Ba/H] diagram is observed in the classical dSphs, similarly to the MW halo, calling for two different nucleosynthesis channels for Sr. The Boötes I and UMa II UFDs reveal very similar ratios of [Sr/Mg] = −1.3 and [Ba/Mg] = –1. The stars in the Coma Berenices and Leo IV UFDs are even poorer in Sr and Ba. The subsolar Sr/Ba ratios of Boötes I and UMa II indicate a common r-process origin of their n-capture elements.

We present accurate methods of abundance determination based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for carbon, oxygen, calcium, titanium, and iron in the atmospheres of BAF-type stars. For C I-II, O I, Ca I-II, and Ti I-II, their comprehensive model atoms were described in our previous papers. A fairly complete model atom of Fe I-II is first applied in this study. We determine the NLTE abundances of the nine BAF-type stars with well-determined atmospheric parameters, using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectral observations in the broad wavelength range, from the UV to the IR. For C, Ca, Ti, and Fe, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from the lines of the two ionisation stages. The C I, Ca II, and Fe II emission lines were detected in the near IR spectrum of the late B-type subgiant star HD 160762. They are well reproduced in the classical hydrostatic model atmosphere, when applying our NLTE methods.

Based on high-resolution spectral observations for a sample of very metal-poor stars, we investigate how well stellar chemical abundances can be derived with available theoretical methods and computational tools.

The understanding of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy relies on the stellar chemical composition. Accurate atmospheric parameters is a prerequisite of determination of accurate chemical abundances. For late type stars with known distance, surface gravity (log g) can be calculated from well-known relation between stellar mass, Teff, and absolute bolometric magnitude. This method weakly depends on model atmospheres, and provides reliable log g. However, accurate distances are available for limited number of stars. Another way to determine log g for cool stars is based on ionisation equilibrium, i.e. consistent abundances from lines of neutral and ionised species. In this study we determine atmospheric parameters moving step-by-step from well-studied nearby dwarfs to ultra-metal poor (UMP) giants. In each sample, we select stars with the most reliable Teff based on photometry and the distance-based log g, and compare with spectroscopic gravity calculated taking into account deviations from local thermodinamic equilibrium (LTE). After that, we apply spectroscopic method of log g determination to other stars of the sample with unknown distances.

The main purpose of Commission 14 is to foster interactions between the astronomical community and those conducting research on atoms, molecules, and solid state particles to provide data vital to reducing and analysing astronomical observations and performing theoretical investigations.

Based on high-resolution observed spectra, the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation, and precise stellar atmosphere parameters, we present the first complete sample of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) with accurate chemical abundances in the very metal-poor (VMP) regime. The obtained stellar elemental ratios are compared with chemical enrichment models, and we show that NLTE is a major step forward for studies of the dSph and the Milky Way (MW) chemical evolution.

Laboratory astrophysics is the Rosetta stone that enables astronomers to understand and interpret the cosmos. The IAU Commission 14, the predecessor of the new IAU Laboratory Astrophysics Commission C. B5 and the AAS Laboratory Astrophysics Division (LAD) decided to coordinate their efforts this summer to hold a joint meeting at the IAU General Assembly.

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, who followed the agenda that had been sent to the membership prior to the meeting. The membership of the Commission stands at approximately 220 members, excluding the new members who will join the commission at the end of this General Assembly.

One of the major tasks in interpretation of data from large-scale stellar surveys is to determine the fundamental atmospheric parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. In most on-going and upcoming projects, they are derived spectroscopically, relying on classical one-dimensional (1D) model atmospheres and the assumption of LTE. This review discusses the present achievements and problems of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line-formation calculations for FGK-type stars. The topics that are addressed include (i) the construction of comprehensive model atoms for the chemical elements with complex term system, (ii) possible systematic errors inherent in classical LTE spectroscopic determinations of stellar parameters and chemical abundances, (iii) the uncertainties in final NLTE results caused by the uncertainties in atomic data, and (iv) applications of the NLTE line-formation calculations coupled to the spatial and temporal average 〈3D〉 models to spectroscopic analyses.

We determined NLTE abundances of Na in the atmospheres of 80 red giants including the 33 stars of the thin disk, 35 stars of the thick disk and 12 stars of Hercules stream.

Solar oxygen abundance is a key parameter for the studies of solar physics. Oxygen abundances of cool stars with different metallicities are important for understanding the galactic chemical evolution. We present non-LTE calculations for O I with the classical plane-parallel (1D) model atmospheres for a set of stellar parameters corresponding to stars of spectral types from A to K. Non-LTE leads to strengthening the O I lines, and the difference between the non-LTE and LTE abundances (non-LTE correction) is negative. The departures from LTE grow toward higher effective temperature and lower surface gravity. In the entire temperature range and log g = 4, the non-LTE correction does not exceed 0.05 dex in absolute value for lines of O I in the visible spectral range. The non-LTE corrections are significantly larger for the infrared O I 7771-5, 8446 Å lines and reach an order of magnitude for A-type stars. To differentiate the effects of inelastic collisions with electrons and neutral hydrogen atoms on the statistical equilibrium (SE) of O I, we derived the oxygen abundance for the five well studied A-type stars. For each star, non-LTE largely removes the difference between the infrared and visible lines found in LTE. In the case of cool stars (Sun and Procyon), inelastic collisions with H I affect the SE of O I, and agreement between the abundances from different lines is achieved when using the Drawin's formalism for collisional rates calculations. The solar mean oxygen abundance from the six lines is ϵ = 8.74 ± 0.05, when using the MAFAGS-OS solar model atmosphere and ϵ = 8.78 ± 0.03, when applying the 3D corrections taken from the literature. The non-LTE abundances of oxygen are derived for the sample of cool dwarfs with various metallicities on high-resolution spectra observed in the Lick observatory.

The main purpose of Commission 14 is to foster interactions between the astronomical community and those conducting research to provide data vital to reducing and analysing astronomical observations and conducting theoretical investigations. One way that the Commission accomplishes this goal is through triennial compilations on recent relevant research in astronomy, atomic, molecular and solid state physics, and related fields of chemical analysis. The most recent compilations appear in the accompanying set of Commission 14 WG Triennial Reports, which were produced by members of the Working Groups and the Organizing Committee of Commission 14.

The members of the Commission 36 Organizing Committee attending the IAU General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro met for a business session on August 7. Both members from the previous (2006–2009) and the new (2009–2012) Organizing Committee partook in the discussions. Past president John Landstreet described the work he had done over the past three years in terms of supporting proposed conferences on the topic. He has also spent significant amount of time establishing an updated mailing list of all >350 members of the commission, which is unfortunately not provided automatically by the IAU. Such a list is critical for a rapid dissemination of information to the commission members and for a correct and smooth running of elections of IAU officials. Everyone present thanked John effusively for all of his hard work over the past three years to stimulate a high level of activity within the discipline.

Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for neutral and singly-ionized iron is considered through a range of stellar parameters characteristic of cool stars. A comprehensive model atom for Fe I and Fe II is presented. Our NLTE calculations support the earlier conclusions that the statistical equilibrium (SE) of Fe I shows an underpopulation of Fe I terms. However, the inclusion of the predicted high-excitation levels of Fe I in our model atom leads to a substantial decrease in the departures from LTE. As a test and first application of the Fe I/II model atom, iron abundances are determined for the Sun and four selected stars with well determined stellar parameters and high-quality observed spectra. Within the error bars, lines of Fe I and Fe II give consistent abundances for the Sun and two metal-poor stars when inelastic collisions with hydrogen atoms are taken into account in the SE calculations. For the close-to-solar metallicity stars Procyon and β Vir, the difference (Fe II - Fe I) is about 0.1 dex independent of the line formation model, either NLTE or LTE. We evaluate the influence of departures from LTE on Fe abundance and surface gravity determination for cool stars.

Commission 36 covers the whole field of the physics of stellar atmospheres. The scientific activity in this large subject has been very intense during the last triennium and led to the publication of a large number of papers, which makes a complete report quite impractical. We have therefore decided to keep the format of the preceding report: first a list of areas of current research, then Web links for obtaining further information.

We present the even-to-odd Ba isotope ratios in 16 thick disk and 3 halo stars as determined from hyperfine structure (HFS) seen in the Ba II resonance line λ 4554. We find in our stars a higher fraction of the odd Ba isotopes compared with the solar one 18% (Cameron 1982): 35% in the halo stars and between 25% and 53% in the thick disk stars. There is a hint of increasing this value with the Eu/Fe abundance ratio growth. Based on the r-process even-to-odd Ba isotope ratio 54 : 46 (Arlandini, Käppeler, Wisshak, et al. 1999) we deduce the ratio of the s/r-process contribution to barium in the thick disk stars as 30 : 70 (±24%).

For refining cosmochemical studies, we are investigating the statistical equilibrium (non-LTE) of neutral and singly-ionized calcium (CaI/II) in the atmospheres of solar-type stars. The envisioned applications are a) detailed abundance studies beyond classical models, b) using CaI/II as a gravity indicator for ultra-metal-poor (UMP) stars and c) detailed modelling of the CaII IR triplet lines for the astrophysical parametrization of the Gaia mission. We present first results for some well-studied reference cases, both at solar and low metallicity.

We started a comparison between different NLTE codes that calculate the statistical equilibrium in solar-type and late type stars (G - A type stars). Discrepancies between different authors analyzing the statistical equilibrium of the same element in the same atmosphere are often surprisingly large. Hence, this study was meant to nail down the origin of these differences. The preliminary results indicate that even if the atmosphere and the atomic input data is fixed, discrepancies of up to 40% in the outer atmospheric layers are still present; the main reason is the different treatment of the background opacity. Following up, we shortly discuss the completeness and accuracy of atomic data used in analyses of the kinetic equilibrium of atoms in the atmospheres of middle and late type stars.
