A relatively diverse chelicerate fauna has been detected in Early Devonian, Siegenian strata of the Westerwald area, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The arachnids, comprising trigonotarbids and the oldest phalangiotarbids, are described and figured here along with the chasmataspidids. To accomodate the phalangiotarbid a new genus and species in the family Architarbidae, Devonotarbus hombachensis, is raised. Devonotarbus n. gen. is characterized by an approximately straight posterior carapace margin, abbreviated and undivided anterior tergites, a large sixth tergite, and fused posterior tergites. The chasmataspidid closely resembles Diploaspis casteri from the Emsian assemblage of Alken an der Mosel, but is readily discernible as a new species, D. muelleri, by a strong tuberculation of its dorsal integument. With only fragmentary opisthosomal remains available, the trigonotarbids cannot be placed in known taxa with any certainty at this time.

A new synziphosurine (Chelicerata: Xiphosura) is described from the Late Llandovery (Silurian) Konservat-Lagerstätte of Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA. Venustulus waukeshaensis n.gen. and sp. is characterized by a semicircular carapace with a slightly procurved posterior margin lacking genal spines and an opisthosoma composed of 10 freely articulating segments, divided into a preabdomen of seven segments with blunt pleurae and a postabdomen of three segments lacking pleurae. The tail spine is short and styliform. This is the earliest known unequivocal synziphosurine, extending their fossil record from the Wenlock to the Llandovery, and only the second species to be described with prosomal appendages; the presence of six pairs (a pair of chelicerae and five pairs of walking legs) contrasts with the seven in the synziphosurine Weinbergina opitzi, but is comparable to the number in modern horseshoe crabs. V. waukeshaensis n. gen. and sp. is not assigned to a family here pending a wider revision, but it bears most resemblance to the Weinberginidae.

New millipede specimens from the Paleozoic of Scotland are described, including Archidesmus macnicoli Peach, 1882, from the Lower Devonian (Lochkovian) Tillywhandland Quarry SSSI and three new taxa—Albadesmus almondi, Pneumodesmus newmani, and Cowiedesmus eroticopodus—from the mid Silurian (late Wenlock—early Ludlow) Cowie Formation at Cowie Harbour. Cowiedesmus eroticopodus new species is placed within the new Cowiedesmidae within the new order Cowiedesmida. Kampecaris tuberculata Brade-Birks from the Lower Devonian (Siegenian) of the Lanark Basin near Dunure is shown not to be a kampecarid myriapod, redescribed as Palaeodesmus tuberculata and placed order incertae sedis within Archipolypoda. Anthracodesmus macconochiei Peach is also redescribed and tentatively placed order incertae sedis within Archipolypoda. Archidesmus macnicoli, Albadesmus almondi, and Palaeodesmus tuberculata are each demonstrated to have broad sternites with laterally placed coxal sockets and paramedian pores containing paired valves. These pores are interpreted as having housed eversible vesicles. Some specimens of Archidesmus macnicoli and Cowiedesmus eroticopodus are male and have a pair of modified legs on trunk segment 8, identified as leg pairs 10 and 11, respectively. The presence of modified anterior legs restricted to segment 8 increases the range of variability known in modified appendage location in male millipedes and compounds existing uncertainty about using the presence of gonopods on trunk segment 7 as a synapomorphy of Helminthomorpha. An affinity between Archidesmida and Cowiedesmida is suggested based on possession of modified legs on segment 8 and Archidesmida + Cowiedesmida is placed along with Euphoberiida in Archipolypoda based on possession of free, broad sternites with bivalved paramedian pores and fused pleurotergites. The oldest known evidence of spiracles is demonstrated in Pneumodesmus newmani, proving that the oldest known millipedes were fully terrestrial.

A harvestman (Arachnida: Opiliones) is described from the Early Devonian (Pragian) Rhynie cherts, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Eophalangium sheari gen. et sp. nov. is the oldest known harvestman. The material includes both males and a female preserving, respectively, a cuticle-lined penis and ovipositor within the opisthosoma. Both these structures are of essentially modern appearance. The Rhynie fossils also show tracheae which are, again, very similar to those of living harvestmen. This is the oldest unequivocal record of arachnid tracheal respiration and indicates that E. sheari was terrestrial. An annulate, setose ovipositor in the female suggests that it can be excluded from the clades Dyspnoi and Laniatores, in which the ovipositor lacks such annulations. However, the penis shows evidence of two muscles, a feature of uncertain polarity seen in modern Troguloidea (Dyspnoi). The presence of median eyes and long legs excludes Cyphophthalmi, and thus, E. sheari is tentatively referred to the suborder Eupnoi. Therefore, this remarkable material is implicitly a crown-group harvestman and is one of the oldest known crown-group chelicerates. It also suggests an extraordinary degree of morphological stasis within the eupnoid line, with the Devonian forms differing little in gross morphology – and perhaps in reproductive behaviour – from their modern counterp

A new aquatic crustacean is described from the Early Devonian Rhynie chert. The small, broadly oviform carapace consists of a univalve symmetrical about its longitudinal axis, formed by a continuous cuticle with no fold or hinge. In transverse cross-section, the ventral surface exhibits a broadly ‘W’-shaped outline. Areas of fine, setose objects are preserved, positioned antero-ventrally on either side of the mid-line axis. In transverse sections, a ring-shaped internal structure is also visible. In longitudinal cross-section, this structure is resolved into an axially positioned, internally subdivided tube occupying the mid- and posterior part of the carapace. A small, anteriorly positioned rostrum has a deep pit on each side, perhaps indicative of the socket of an antennal appendage. The arthropods are commonly found clustered together around plant axes, comprising groups of up to 25 or more similarly sized individuals. The chert texture enclosing many individual specimens indicates a sub-aqueous preservational environment. The same organism has recently been discovered in preparations from the nearby and equivalently aged Windyfield hot spring deposit. The morphology of this new arthropod suggests affinity with Branchiopoda and it is tentatively placed within the Diplostraca (an order which contains both ‘conchostracans’ and ‘cladocerans’, or water fleas). The presence of a univalve test suggests a cladoceran affinity, but the lack of diagnostic appendages in the present material does not allow us to take the classification any further. This is potentially the earliest known occurrence of the group and would extend their fossil record back from the Early Cretaceous. The remarkable similarity between these arthropods and their present-day representatives strongly indicates morphological stasis within the group from early on in their evolutionary history

The Silurian arthropod Bembicosoma pomphicus Laurie, 1899 is re-studied in relation to other Palaeozoic chelicerate taxa. All three known specimens of Bembicosoma originate from the Silurian (late Llandovery) Eurypterid Bed of the Gutterford Burn Flagstones, Reservoir Formation, Pentland Hills, Scotland. Bembicosoma is removed from its previous tentative assignment to Eurypterida and re-assigned to Xiphosura. A morphological reconstruction of this taxon is presented for the first time. This work continues a reappraisal of the systematics of a number of taxa that belong within the synziphosurines, a loose grouping of early Palaeozoic chelicerate arthropods aligned with the Xiphosura (horseshoe crabs), but which have been mistakenly identified as eurypterids in the past. Bembicosoma is significant as it is one of the earliest known synziphosurines.

The type material of Chasmataspis laurencii Caster & Brooks, 1956 (Chelicerata: Chasmataspidida) from the Middle Ordovician (Tremadoc to Caradoc) of Sevier County, Tennessee, USA, is redescribed, and comparisons are drawn with recently discovered Devonian chasmataspids from Scotland, Germany and Russia. The depositional setting of the C. laurencii fossils is reinterpreted as an ash fall into shallow marine/tidal sediments. Chasmataspis laurencii confirms the presence of 13 opisthosomal segments in Chasmataspidida, a character of unresolved polarity. The phylogenetic position ofC. laurencii is difficult to resolve. A monophyletic Chasmataspidida has one convincing autapomorphy in the nine-segmented postabdomen, but C. laurencii shares a number of characters with xiphosurans (i.e. cardiac lobe, pre-abdomen with axial region, biramous and chelate limbs), while the Devonian taxa more closely resemble eurypterids (i.e. through pediform limbs and a genital appendage). Earlier interpretations of the respiratory system in C. laurencii appear unconvincing in the light of new evidence from Devonian forms with opisthosomal opercula. Resting impressions of a Chasmataspis-like animal from the Upper Cambrian Hickory Sandstone of Texas, USA, also appear to show evidence of opercula. These Texan fossils could represent the oldest record of Euchelicerata. Two chasmataspid families are recognised, and C. laurencii is placed in the monotypic Chasmataspididae Caster & Brooks, 1956, redefined here on the fused pre-abdominal buckler with an axial region and the narrow, elongate post-abdomen ending in a long, lanceolate telson.

A new chasmataspid (Chelicerata, Chasmataspida) is described as Forfarella mitchelli gen. et sp. nov. from the Lower Devonian of Scotland. This species is problematic in that it was catalogued under the name Forfarella mitchelli Waterston (no date), but was never formally described. Furthermore, its type locality is uncertain. Chasmataspids are a poorly known taxon within Chelicerata which appear to be closely related to eurypterids. F. mitchelli is only the fourth chasmataspid species to be described. Though poorly preserved, it shows affinities with other Devonian chasmataspids and supports the hypothesis that this group may have been more geographically widespread in the Devonian than has previously been recognised.
