A low-profile wideband circularly polarized (CP) metasurface antenna is demonstrated for C-band applications. The metasurface consists of 4 × 4 square patches with Z-shaped slots. Characteristic mode analysis is used to investigate the modal behavior of the metasurface, and a pair of degenerate modes is chosen as the operating modes. The CP radiation is realized by exciting a pair of degenerate modes of the metasurface through a slot antenna, which is used as a feed structure with a 90° phase difference. The CP bandwidth is further widened by combining the resonance modes of the metasurface and slot antenna. The measured results show that the −10 dB impedance bandwidth of the antenna is 3.47–4.76 GHz, and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 3.5–4.9 GHz with a peak gain of 6.9 dBic. Moreover, the antenna exhibits well left-hand CP radiation performances with a low profile of 0.046λ0.

This study aims to understand the epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the paediatric population during the outbreak of the Omicron variant in Shanghai. We retrospectively analysed the population-based epidemiological characteristics and clinical outcome of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection in children in Minhang District, Shanghai, based on the citywide surveillance system during the outbreak period in 2022 (March to May). During this time, a total of 63,969 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were notified in Minhang District, out of which 4,652 (7.3%) were children and adolescents <18 years. The incidence rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections in children was 153 per 10,000. Of all paediatric cases, 50% reported to be clinically symptomatic within 1–3 days after PCR confirmation by parents or themselves, with 36.3% and 18.9% of paediatric cases reporting fever and cough. Also, 58.4% of paediatric cases had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 52.1% had received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination. Our findings are informative for the implementation of appropriate measures to protect children from the threat of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

To verify whether a graph is suitable for describing driver behaviour performance under the effects of navigation information, this study applies two types of prompt messages: simple and detailed. The simple messages contain only direction instructions, while the detailed messages contain distance, direction, road and lane instructions. A driving simulation experiment was designed to collect the empirical data. Two vehicle operating indicators (velocity and lateral offset), and two driver manoeuvre indicators (accelerator power and steering wheel angle) were selected, and T-test was used to compare the differences of behavioural performance. Driving behaviour graphs were constructed for the two message conditions; their characteristics and similarities were further analysed. Finally, the results of T-test of behavioural performance and similarity results of the driving behaviour graphs were compared. Results indicated that the two different types of prompt messages were associated with significant differences in driving behaviours, which implies that it is feasible to describe the characteristics of driving behaviours guided by navigation information using such graphs. This study provides a new method for systematically exploring the mechanisms affecting drivers’ response to navigation information, and presents a new perspective for the optimisation of navigation information.

Two new species of free-living marine nematode discovered from an intertidal sandy beach in the Bohai Sea and from a sublittoral region in the East China Sea are described. Deontolaimus holovachovi sp. nov. is characterized by short cephalic setae (2.5–3 μm long); ventrally-unispiral amphidial fovea; excretory pore located at the level with nerve ring; lateral alae present; two pairs of lateral cervical setae present; arcuate spicules 1.5–1.6 cloacal body diameter long, with the proximal half swollen and proximal end hooked, the distal half narrow; gubernaculum with dorso-caudal apophysis; postcloacal sensilla present in males; a midventral caudal papilla with a short seta situated at posterior third of tail length. Campylaimus zhoui sp. nov. is characterized by loop-shaped amphid with very long ventral limb extending along pharyngeal region to level of anterior part of intestine, 4.7–5.2 times the length of dorsal limb; excretory pore opening posterior to the pharyngo-intestinal junction; spicules symmetrical, slightly arcuate without proximal capitulum; gubernaculum with small dorsal apophysis; precloacal supplements absent.

The study aimed to investigate behavioural intentions to receive free and self-paid COVID-19 vaccinations (BICV-F and BICV-SP) among Chinese university students if the vaccine was 80% effective with rare mild side effects, to examine their associations with social media exposures and peer discussions regarding COVID-19 vaccination, and to explore the mediational role of perceived information sufficiency about COVID-19 vaccination. An online anonymous survey (N = 6922) was conducted in November 2020 in five Chinese provinces. Logistic regression and path analysis were adopted. The prevalence of BICV-F and BICV-SP were 78.1% and 57.7%. BICV-F was positively associated with the frequencies of passive social media exposure (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.32, P < 0.001), active social media interaction (AOR = 1.13, P < 0.001) and peer discussions (AOR = 1.17, P < 0.001). Indirect effects of the three factors on BICV-F via perceived information sufficiency were all significant (P < 0.001). The direct effect of active social media interaction on BICV-F was significantly negative (P < 0.001). Similar associations/mediations were observed for BICV-SP. The COVID-19 vaccination intention of Chinese university students needs improvement. Boosting social media exposures and peer discussions may raise students' perceived information sufficiency and subsequently increase their vaccination intention. Considering the potential negative effect of active social media interaction, caution is needed when using social media to promote COVID-19 vaccination.

Recently, we introduced an epoxy group to mebendazole by a reaction with epichlorohydrin and obtained two isoforms, mebendazole C1 (M-C1) and mebendazole C2 (M-C2). The in vitro effects of mebendazole derivatives at different concentrations on Echinococcus multilocularis protoscoleces and metacestodes as well as cytotoxicity in rat hepatoma (RH) cells were examined. The results demonstrated that the solubility of the two derivatives was greatly improved compared to mebendazole. The mortality of protoscoleces in vitro reached to 70–80% after 7 days of exposure to mebendazole or M-C2, and M-C2 showed higher parasiticidal effects than mebendazole (P > 0.05). The parasiticidal effect of M-C1 was low, even at a concentration of 30 µm. The percentage of damaged metacestodes that were treated with mebendazole and M-C2 in vitro at different concentrations were similar, and M-C1 exhibited insignificant effects on metacestodes. Significant morphological changes on protoscoleces and metacestodes were observed after treatment with mebendazole and M-C2. In addition, the introduction of an epoxy group to mebendazole also reduced its cytotoxicity in RH cells. Our results demonstrate that the introduction of an epoxy group not only improved the solubility of mebendazole, but also increased its parasiticidal effects on E. multilocularis and reduced its cytotoxicity in RH cells.

By using a combination of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, our studies show that the elastic response of silica glass to initial compression gradually changes from abnormal to normal with increasing quench pressure, helium content or alkali modifier added in the glass matrix. We uncovered the structural origin of the elastic anomaly in silica glass as localized structural transitions between motifs of different stiffness that are similar to those found in its crystalline counterparts. Pressure-quenching, helium-stuffing, or alkali-modifying plays a different role in changing the structure of silica glass, but all of the resulting structures reduce the propensity for such local structural transitions to take place, thus the degree of elastic anomaly. Our studies demonstrate that by processing in ways that gradually eliminates the elastic anomaly, the degree of silica glass to undergo irreversible densification can be eventually eradicated. This provides a solid foundation for the bottom-up design of new glasses with tunable structure and properties.

where $\tilde{K}\left( x \right)$ is positive and rotationally symmetric on ${{\mathbb{S}}^{N-1}},{{2}^{\#}}=\frac{2\left( N-1 \right)}{N-2}$. We show that if $\tilde{K}\left( x \right)$ has a local maximum point, then this problem has infinitely many positive solutions that are not rotationally symmetric on ${{\mathbb{S}}^{N-1}}$.

A normal solid becomes stiffer when squeezed and softer when heated. In contrast, silica glass behaves the opposite way: its elastic moduli decrease upon compression and increase upon heating. Silica glass is also known to densify under compression and radiations. These have been long-standing mysteries in materials science. Using molecular dynamics simulation, we uncovered the structural origins of the anomalous thermo-mechanical behaviors and mechanisms of permanent densification in silica glass. Accordingly, these anomalies can be attributed to localized structural transitions, analogous to those that occur in the crystalline counterparts. The irreversible densification in silica glass is achieved through structural transition involving bond breaking and re-formation under a combination of high pressure and temperature. We further revealed that the anomalous thermo-mechanical behaviors are inherently connected to the ability of the glass to undergo permanent densification. Our computer simulations demonstrate that by processing in ways that gradually eliminates anomalous thermo-mechanical behaviors, degree of the glass to undergo densification can be eventually eradicated. This provides the conceptual foundation for the bottom-up design of new glasses with tunable structure and properties.

The heat transfer coefficients of porous copper fabricated by the lost carbonate sintering (LCS) process with porosity range from 57% to 82% and pore size from 150 to 1500 μm have been experimentally determined in this study. The sample was attached to the heat plate and assembled into a forced convection system using water as the coolant. The effectiveness of the heat removal from the heat plate through the porous copper-water system was tested under different water flow rates from 0.3 to 2.0 L/min and an input heat flux of 1.3 MW/m2. Porosity has a large effect on the heat transfer performance and the optimum porosity was found to be around 62%. Pore size has a much less effect on the heat transfer performance compared to porosity. High water flow rates enhanced the heat transfer performance for all the samples.

Cs-type layered manganese oxide with a novel hexagonal-like morphology (Cs–BirMO) was prepared by a solid-state reaction procedure. The Cs+ extraction and alkali–metal ion insertion reactions were investigated by chemical analyses, x-ray analyses, scanning electron microscopy observation, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric differential thermal analyses, pH titration, and distribution coefficient (Kd) measurements. A considerable percentage (88%) of Cs+ ions in the interlayer sites were topotactically extracted by acid treatment, accompanied by a slight change of the lattice parameters. Alkali–metal ions could be inserted into the interlayer of the acid-treated sample (H–BirMO), mainly by an ion-exchange mechanism. The pH titration curve of the H–BirMO sample showed a simple monobasic acid toward Li+, Rb+, and Cs+ ions, and dibasic acid behavior toward Na+ and K+ ions. The order of the apparent capacity was K+ > Li+ ≈ Na+ ≈ Rb+ ≈ Cs+ at pH < 6. The Kd study showed the selectivity sequence of K+ > Rb+ > Na+ > Li+ for alkali–metal ions at the range of pH <5; H–BirMO sample showed markedly high selectivity for the adsorption of K+ ions. Preliminary investigations of the electrochemical properties of the Li+-inserted sample Li–BirMO(1M, 6d) showed that the obtained samples had a relatively high discharge capacity of 115 mAh g−1 and excellent layered stability.
