The transfer of momentum between the atmosphere and oceanic motions affected by the Earth's rotation occurs through the thin surface Ekman layer. The exchange depends on the surface wind stress, which produces the Ekman pumping of fluid to the ocean upper layer. The Ekman pumping mainly depends on: (i) the curl of the wind stress and (ii) the advection of vorticity due to the Ekman transport. The wind stress is usually parametrised as a quadratic function of the relative speed between the wind and the ocean currents, providing a feedback mechanism between the two fluids. Under steady and spatially uniform wind conditions over mesoscale vortices, the first mechanism generates vertical motions that induce the vortex decay (top drag), while the second promotes the horizontal advection of vorticity in the Ekman transport direction. This study examines the nonlinear effects of both mechanisms in cyclonic and anticyclonic vortices. The analyses consist of simple analytical approximations and nonlinear numerical simulations of quasi-two-dimensional vortices. When considering only the top drag mechanism, it is found that anticyclones decay faster than cyclones. By considering only the vorticity-advection effect, the vortices acquire horizontal momentum and drift; furthermore, anticyclones are reinforced while cyclones are weakened. The joint action of both mechanisms and the possible consequences on vertical transport properties are also discussed.

The linear instability of circular vortices over isolated topography in a homogeneous and inviscid fluid is examined for the shallow-water and quasi-geostrophic models in the $f$-plane. The eigenvalue problem associated with azimuthal disturbances is derived for arbitrary axisymmetric topographies, either submarine mountains or valleys. Amended Rayleigh and Fjørtoft theorems with topographic effects are given for barotropic instability, obtaining necessary criteria for instability when the potential vorticity gradient is zero somewhere in the domain. The onset of centrifugal instability is also discussed by deriving the Rayleigh circulation theorem with topography. The barotropic instability theorems are applied to a wide family of nonlinear, quasi-geostrophic solutions of circular vortices over axisymmetric topographic features. Flow instability depends mainly on the vortex/topography configuration, as well as on the vortex size in comparison with the width of the topography. It is found that anticyclones/mountains and cyclones/valleys may be unstable. In contrast, cyclone/mountain and anticyclone/valley configurations are stable. These statements are validated with two numerical methods. First, the generalised eigenvalue problem is solved to obtain the wavenumber of the fastest-growing perturbations. Second, the evolution of the vortices is simulated numerically to detect the development of linear perturbations. The numerical results show that for unstable vortices over narrow topographies, the fastest growth rate corresponds to mode $1$, which subsequently forms asymmetric dipolar structures. Over wide topographies, the fastest perturbations are mainly modes $1$ and $2$, depending on the topographic features.

Analytical solutions of barotropic, quasi-geostrophic vortices over an axisymmetric bottom topography are presented. The solutions are based on independent azimuthal modes adapted to the shape of the topography. Modes 0 (circular monopoles) and 1 (asymmetric dipoles) are evaluated for different topographic profiles that represent either submarine mountains or valleys. The interior fields are matched with an exterior flow with streamlines enclosing the vortices, so the structures remain trapped over the topographic feature. The solutions are steady in a reference frame attached to the rotation of the vortices around the topography. The main features of trapped vortices as a function of the topographic parameters, such as the structure, strength and angular speed, are discussed through numerical simulations initialised with theoretical vorticity fields. The model results reproduce reasonably well the analytical solutions when the topographic effects are strong enough to inhibit the dipole self-propagation. In contrast, very intense dipolar modes may escape from the influence of the topography.

Antarctic and Southern Ocean science is vital to understanding natural variability, the processes that govern global change and the role of humans in the Earth and climate system. The potential for new knowledge to be gained from future Antarctic science is substantial. Therefore, the international Antarctic community came together to ‘scan the horizon’ to identify the highest priority scientific questions that researchers should aspire to answer in the next two decades and beyond. Wide consultation was a fundamental principle for the development of a collective, international view of the most important future directions in Antarctic science. From the many possibilities, the horizon scan identified 80 key scientific questions through structured debate, discussion, revision and voting. Questions were clustered into seven topics: i) Antarctic atmosphere and global connections, ii) Southern Ocean and sea ice in a warming world, iii) ice sheet and sea level, iv) the dynamic Earth, v) life on the precipice, vi) near-Earth space and beyond, and vii) human presence in Antarctica. Answering the questions identified by the horizon scan will require innovative experimental designs, novel applications of technology, invention of next-generation field and laboratory approaches, and expanded observing systems and networks. Unbiased, non-contaminating procedures will be required to retrieve the requisite air, biota, sediment, rock, ice and water samples. Sustained year-round access to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean will be essential to increase winter-time measurements. Improved models are needed that represent Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in the Earth System, and provide predictions at spatial and temporal resolutions useful for decision making. A co-ordinated portfolio of cross-disciplinary science, based on new models of international collaboration, will be essential as no scientist, programme or nation can realize these aspirations alone.

Simulation models can offer valuable insights into the effectiveness of different control strategies and act as important decision support tools when comparing and evaluating outbreak scenarios and control strategies. An international modelling study was performed to compare a range of vaccination strategies in the control of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Modelling groups from five countries (Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, The Netherlands) participated in the study. Vaccination is increasingly being recognized as a potentially important tool in the control of FMD, although there is considerable uncertainty as to how and when it should be used. We sought to compare model outputs and assess the effectiveness of different vaccination strategies in the control of FMD. Using a standardized outbreak scenario based on data from an FMD exercise in the UK in 2010, the study showed general agreement between respective models in terms of the effectiveness of vaccination. Under the scenario assumptions, all models demonstrated that vaccination with ‘stamping-out’ of infected premises led to a significant reduction in predicted epidemic size and duration compared to the ‘stamping-out’ strategy alone. For all models there were advantages in vaccinating cattle-only rather than all species, using 3-km vaccination rings immediately around infected premises, and starting vaccination earlier in the control programme. This study has shown that certain vaccination strategies are robust even to substantial differences in model configurations. This result should increase end-user confidence in conclusions drawn from model outputs. These results can be used to support and develop effective policies for FMD control.

Current evidence suggests that regenerative v. degenerative endothelial responses can be integrated in a clinical endothelial phenotype, reflecting the net result between damage from risk factors and endogenous repair capacity. We have previously shown that a cocoa flavanol (CF) intervention can improve endothelial function and increase the regenerative capacity of the endothelium by mobilising circulating angiogenic cells in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether CF can lower the levels of circulating endothelial microparticles (EMP), markers of endothelial integrity, along with improvements in endothelial function. The levels of EMP in the frozen plasma samples of CAD patients were measured along with endothelial function (flow-mediated vasodilation, FMD); n 16, FMD data published previously), and these data were compared with those of young (n 12) and age-matched (n 12) healthy control subjects. The CAD patients exhibited significantly increased levels of EMP along with impaired FMD when compared with the healthy control subjects. The levels of CD144+ and CD31+/41− EMP were inversely correlated with FMD (r − 0·67, P= 0·01 and r − 0·59, P= 0·01, respectively). In these CAD patients, the levels of EMP were measured after they had consumed a drink containing 375 mg of CF (high-CF intervention, HiFI) or 9 mg of CF (macro- and micronutrient-matched low-CF control, LoFl) twice daily over a 30-d period in a randomised, double-blind, cross-over study. After 1 month of HiFI, the levels of CD31+/41− and CD144+ EMP decreased ( − 25 and − 23 %, respectively), but not after LoFl. Our data show that flavanols lower the levels of EMP along with higher endothelial function, lending evidence to the novel concept that flavanols may improve endothelial integrity.

For research facilities with access to synchrotron X-ray sources, X-ray absorption microtomography (XMT) has evolved from an experimental imaging method to a specialized, if not yet routine, microscopy for imaging the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of linear attenuation coefficients and, in some cases, elemental concentration with micron spatial resolution. Recent advances in source and detector design have produced conventional X-ray source instruments with comparable spatial resolution but with lower throughput and without element specific imaging. Both classes of instrument produce 3D images for analysis. We discuss an integrated approach for the implementation of analytical XMT to support basic research into the structure-property relationships of a variety of materials. The essential components include instrumentation for collecting quantitative 3D images, a 3D image processing environment to address questions as to the quantity, composition, geometry, and relationships among the features in one or more images, and visualization to provide insight and communicate results. We give examples of image analysis of resolved and unresolved pore spaces of sandstones.

The evolution of barotropic vortices over a topographic, axisymmetric mountain in a homogeneous rotating fluid is studied experimentally. The aim is to identify the main physical processes observed in (i) a horizontal plane of motion, perpendicular to the rotation axis of the system, and (ii) a vertical plane across the diameter of the mountain. The vortices are monopolar cyclones initially generated near or over the topography. Initially, the vortices drift towards the mountain due to the -effect associated with the topographic slope. On arriving, they turn around the obstacle in an anticyclonic direction, whilst anticyclonic vorticity is generated over the summit. The long-term vorticity distribution is dominated by the original cyclone elongated around the topographic contours and the generated anticyclone over the tip of the topography. In the vertical plane an oscillatory uphill–downhill flow is generated, which is directly related to the drift of the cyclone around the mountain. Depending on the vortex characteristics, the period of the oscillation ranges from 4 to 10 times the rotation period of the system. The horizontal and vertical flow fields are reproduced numerically by using a shallow-water formulation, which allows a detailed view of the vertical motions, hence facilitating the interpretation of the experimental results. In addition, the cyclone–anticyclone pair over the mountain is compared with analytical solutions of topographically trapped waves. A general conclusion is that vertical motions persist for several days (or rotation periods), which implies that this mechanism might be potentially important for the vertical transport over seamounts.

The evolution and decay of a homogeneous flow over random topography in a rotating system is studied by means of numerical simulations and theoretical considerations. The analysis is based on a quasi-two-dimensional shallow-water approximation, in which the horizontal divergence is explicitly different from zero, and topographic variations are not restricted to be much smaller than the mean depth, as in quasi-geostrophic dynamics. The results are examined by comparing the evolution of a turbulent flow over different random bottom topographies characterized by a specific horizontal scale, or equivalently, a given mean slope. As in two-dimensional turbulence, the energy of the flow is transferred towards larger scales of motion; after some rotation periods, however, the process is halted as the flow pattern becomes aligned along the topographic contours with shallow water to the right. The quasi-steady state reached by the flow is characterized by a nearly linear relationship between potential vorticity and transport function in most parts of the domain, which is justified in terms of minimum-enstrophy arguments. It is found that global energy decays faster for topographies with shorter horizontal length scales due to more effective viscous dissipation. In addition, some comparisons between simulations based on the shallow-water and quasi-geostrophic formulations are carried out. The role of solid boundaries is also examined: it is shown that vorticity production at no-slip walls contributes for a slight disorganization of the flow.

We generate self-phase-stabilized pulses by difference-frequency generation of a hollow-fibre broadened supercontinuum followed by two-stage optical parametric amplification. This system allows the production of broadband pulses widely tuneable in the near-IR wavelength region. Energies up to 0.2 mJ with 15 fs pulse width are demonstrated. These characteristics make this source suitable as a driver for attosecond pulse generation.

The dependence of the high-order harmonic cutoff spectrum from the absolute phase of the laser pulse is here experimentally investigated. Noticeable shifts are observed. Their interpretation is proposed with a model based on the absolute-phase dependence of the trajectories of the photoelectrons that contribute to a given harmonic order.

This paper presents a general two-dimensional model for rotating barotropic flows over topography. The model incorporates in a vorticity–stream function formulation both inviscid topography effects, associated with stretching and squeezing of fluid columns enforced by their motion over variable topography, and viscous effects, due to the Ekman boundary layer at the solid bottom. From the present formulation, conventional two-dimensional models can be recovered. The model is tested by means of laboratory experiments on homogeneous vortices encountering irregular topographies. The experimental observations are then compared with the corresponding numerical simulations based on the general model. The results suggest that such a formulation incorporates both inviscid and viscous topography effects correctly.
