  • A call to action: Taking the untenable out of women professors’ pregnancy, postpartum, and caregiving demands

  • Despite becoming increasingly represented in academic departments, women scholars face a critical lack of support as they navigate demands pertaining to pregnancy, motherhood, and child caregiving. In addition, cultural norms surrounding how faculty and academic leaders discuss and talk about tenure, promotion, and career success have created pressure for women who wish to grow their family and care for their children, leading to questions about whether it is possible for these women to have a family and an academic career. This paper is a call to action for academia to build structures that support professors who are women as they navigate the complexities of pregnancy, the postpartum period, and the caregiving demands of their children. We specifically call on those of us in I-O psychology, management, and related departments to lead the way. In making this call, we first present the realistic, moral, and financial cases for why this issue needs to be at the forefront of discussions surrounding success in the academy. We then discuss how, in the U.S. and elsewhere, an absence of policies supporting women places two groups of academics—department heads (as the leaders of departments who have discretion outside of formal policies to make work better for women) and other faculty members (as potential allies both in the department and within our professional organizations)—in a critical position to enact support and change. We conclude with our boldest call—to make a cultural shift that shatters the assumption that having a family is not compatible with academic success. Combined, we seek to launch a discussion that leads directly to necessary and overdue changes in how women scholars are supported in academia.

  • Summary

    There are three primary theoretical perspectives detailing why gender differences in workplace stressors may exist: the differential exposure perspective, the psychological/coping perspective, and the biological sex differences perspective. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how and at what point gender is proposed to influence the stressor–well-being process in addition to summarizing empirical evidence regarding gender differences in the mean levels of common work stressors: work–family conflict, job demands, job autonomy/decision latitude, work hours, and career concerns. Gaps in the present literature are identified and recommendations for future research are provided.

  • Summary

    Work-family issues have increasingly gained attention across the globe, prompting researchers to conduct cross-cultural comparisons. However, to our knowledge, no comprehensive review of this literature exists. Without such a review, this literature is difficult to synthesize, given the various countries included as well as the different types of research questions addressed due to the cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of this work. The goal of this chapter is to address this gap by summarizing the extant quantitative cross-cultural work-family literature. We do so by providing a table that lists the cross-cultural focus of each work-family study from the literature, the countries included, and the findings regarding cultural similarities and differences. We also synthesize the results of these studies via a narrative review and provide recommendations for future research.

  • Summary

    This concluding chapter provides a forward look at cross-cultural work-family research through the lens of answering the basic questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how. We discuss the importance of who researchers are studying and to what extent our knowledge is generalizable. Issues surrounding what researchers are actually studying and the unique importance of this seemingly simple issue in cross-cultural settings are described as well. The notion of time, and its accompanying dynamics are offered as complex opportunities to better understand the context of when research is conducted as well as temporal issues throughout the lifespan. We encourage future research to continue to intentionally select countries and contexts where research is conducted, while also filling in important regional gaps identified throughout the world. Lastly, we call on researchers to reimagine how they conduct these important endeavors and encourage the use of novel methods and strategies.
