Li+, Na+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Cu2+, or Zn2+-saturated samples of a cis-vacant montmorillonite from Linden, Bavaria, were heated to temperatures between 200–700°C. Half of each heated sample was subsequently autoelaved under steam at 200°C (∼1.5 MPa) to promote rehydroxylation. The smectites were characterized by cation-exchange capacity (CEC), determination of exchangeable cations, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and thermoanalytical investigations of evolved water in a thermobalance linked with a mass spectrometer.

Changes in the montmorillonite structure and dehydroxylation behavior are related to three respective mechanisms: type of the interlayer cation, interlayer cation radius, and the movement of the interlayer cation. The migration of the smaller Li+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ions after heating produces a strong reduction of CEC due to the Hofmann-Klemen effect before the initiation of dehydroxylation. Thereafter, the CEC of these smectites remains constant over a large temperature interval during dehydroxylation. After rehydroxylation, Cu2+ and Zn2+-rich samples release 16–23 meq/100 g of Mg2+ from the structure. No Mg2+ release is observed for the Li+-rich montmorillonite. Also the dehydroxylation behavior after rehydroxylation differs between the Cu2+, Zn2+, and Li+-rich samples. The mass curves of the evolved water during thermoanalysis of the rehydroxylated Cu2+ and Zn2+-rich smectites show a peak doublet between 480–700°C. For the Li+, Na+, Ca2+, and Sr2+-rich montmorillonites, the second peak disappeared and a third peak at ∼760°C developed after rehydroxylation. The resulting structure after rehydroxylation of all samples is celadonite-like.

The objective of the study was to contribute to the understanding of the influence of the structure and the 2:1 layer dimension of smectites on cation exchange capacity (CEC) reduction and the hydration behavior of Li-saturated smectites after heating. Five montmorillonites extracted from bentonites of different provenance were saturated with Li+ and heated to 300°C. Initial montmorillonites and montmorillonites with reduced layer charge (RCM) were characterized by comprehensive mineralogical analysis supplemented by CEC measurements, surface-area measurements by Ar adsorption, and 7Li, 27Al, and 29Si magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MAS NMR). The CEC of the initial montmorillonites varied between 89 and 130 cmol(+)/kg while the CEC of the RCM prepared at 300°C varied between 8 and 25 cmol(+)/kg. The lateral dimension of the 2:1 layers varied between 70 and 200 nm. The greatest decrease in CEC was observed for the montmorillonite with the largest diameter of the 2:1 layers and the smallest decrease was observed for the montmorillonite with the smallest diameter of the 2:1 layers. 7Li MAS NMR revealed an axially symmetric chemical environment of the hydrated interlayer Li+ with ηΔ = 0 for the chemical shift anisotropy tensor for unheated montmorillonites with >33% tetrahedral layer charge (ξ). The chemical environment is typical of innersphere hydration complexes of interlayer Li+. An axially non-symmetric chemical environment of the interlayer Li+ with ηCS of close to one was observed for all RCM. While the remaining CEC of RCM prepared at 300°C reflected the variable CEC at the edges, and thus the lateral size or aspect ratio of the 2:1 layers, the hydration complex of interlayer Li+ was strongly determined by the isomorphic substitutions in the dioctahedral 2:1 layers.

The industrial assessment of ceramic clays commonly consists of the determination of just two parameters, the particle-size distribution and the chemical composition; other parameters may also be important, however. The aim of the present study was to show that a careful determination of the mineralogical phase content provides valuable additional information on the processing behavior of ceramic clays.

Two ceramic clays (W1 andW2) from theWesterwald area, Germany, were evaluated as being the same with respect to industrial screening criteria, but showed different processing properties. In order to elucidate the different behaviors, both clays were investigated comprehensively using a multi-method approach combining physical-chemical and mineralogical methods.

Different aggregation characteristics for the two clays were revealed by determining the grain-size distribution with and without Na-pyrophosphate as a dispersant. In addition, W1 showed a greater electrical conductivity and soluble-salt concentration which promoted dispersion behavior.

The phase content was identified both for bulk materials and for several grain-size fractions by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld analysis. The quantitative phase content was crosschecked with the chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Additional information was gathered by thermal analysis, cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and optical microscopy. While bulk samples of W1 and W2 showed nearly the same mineralogical and chemical compositions, investigation of the clay-size fractions (0.6–2 μm, <0.6 mm) revealed differences in the composition of the 2:1 layer silicates. The percentages of smectite in the mixed-layer I-S, as well as the amount of kaolinite, discrete illite, and smectite were determined by one-dimensional XRD profile fitting (ODPF). Best-fitting results for W1 were achieved for a physical mixture of an illite-rich I-S mixed-layer mineral (R3 I(0.9)-S) with discrete smectite, whereas W2 was characterized by a greater proportion of smectite in the mixed-layer (R1 I(0.8)-S), without discrete smectite. Based on the different structural features of the swellable clays, a qualitative delamination model for the 2:1 layer silicates during processing of the clays was derived. The model provides a further approach, aside from aggregation characteristics, to help understand the clay-processing behavior, which was found to be different for the two ceramic clays investigated.

The term ‘montmorillonite’ encompasses a wide range of chemical compositions and structures. Comprehensive and reliable characterization is essential for unambiguous classification. Twenty eight purified, Na-exchanged smectites (<0.2 µm) were characterized by layer-charge measurement using the alkylammonium method, by cation exchange capacity (CEC) measurement with Cu-triethylenetetramine, by determination of the chemical composition using X-ray fluorescence analysis, by calculation of the structural formula following determination of the octahedral structure (trans-vacant vs. cis-vacant) by simultaneous thermal analysis, and by X-ray diffraction analysis. Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to determine the oxidation state and coordination of Fe and changes thereof during purification of the source materials.

The charge derived from chemical composition was considerably greater (by up to 30%) than the measured layer charge. The independently measured layer charge was used to calculate the structural formula. The measured CEC values, comprising the permanent charges and the pH-dependent edge charges, were consistent with measured layer charge but not with layer charge derived from the chemical composition. Therefore, the structural formula of smectites should be calculated using the measured layer charge.

The dehydroxylation temperature, which conveys information about the structure of the octahedral sheet, was correlated to the amount of Mg and Fe3+ and the location of charges. No relationship was found among the dehydroxylation temperature and the mean layer charge or the Mg content. In contrast, a clear relationship was observed between the Fe content and the dehydroxylation temperature. Montmorillonites with an Fe content <0.3/f.u. are cis-vacant and those containing Fe3+ > 0.3 mol/f.u. are trans-vacant, mostly with additional cis-vacancies. Tetrahedral substitution also appeared to be a function of the number of trans-vacancies.

The parameters analyzed provide the basis for a new descriptive classification system.

Montmorillonites, with the general composition where x = ξ = 0.2–0.6, x = y+z, and y≪z, vary widely in composition and structure. The commonly used classification into five montmorillonite and two beidellite groups for the solid-solution sequence does not allow an unambiguous classification with respect to structural features and the resulting properties.

The smectite structure reveals five features that allow an unambiguous description of a sample: (1) identification as either a dioctahedral or a trioctahedral smectite; (2) layer charge; (3) charge distribution between tetrahedral and octahedral sheets; (4) cation distribution within the octahedral sheet; and (5) Fe content. In addition, the nature of interlayer cations should be given as they influence certain properties of montmorillonites. Analytical methods are now available to measure and determine these structural features. Therefore, a precise classification for montmorillonites requires determination of layer charge and exchangeable cations, analysis of chemical composition, and thermal analysis (to determine the octahedral structure), in addition to X-ray diffraction analysis.

A comprehensive classification of montmorillonites based on these parameters is proposed. Ninety-six structural variations (expressed by systematic names) theoretically exist within the montmorillonite-beidellite series. Descriptive names can be used to elucidate the macroscopic properties of the montmorillonite samples in question.

Clays and clay minerals dissolve over a broad pH range, such as during sediment diagenesis and in a variety of applications, including nuclear waste storage, landfills, and geopolymer binders in the construction industry. The solubility depends on process parameters (pH, temperature, pressure, etc.) and material properties (phase content, clay mineral composition, particle size, etc.). Pretreatments such as calcination or severe grinding change the material properties and could enhance solubility, which is called activation. The aim of the current study was to determine the solubility of three different clay minerals after calcination (metakaolinite, metamontmorillonite, and metaillite) in high molar alkaline solutions (NaOH) up to 10.79 mol/L and pH = 14.73. Furthermore, the solubility of an Al(OH)3 powder in alkaline solution (NaOH) was analyzed, as it can be used to adjust the Si:Al ratio of geopolymer precursors. The residues of the clay minerals after the alkaline treatment were investigated to disclose potential alterations in their phase contents. Based on the results of the thermal and alkaline activation, conclusions about the suitability as geopolymer precursors were made. All clay minerals showed an increase in solubility proportional to the concentration of the alkaline solution. The solubility decreased in the order metakaolinite > metamontmorillonite > metaillite. Thereby, dissolution was incomplete for all three clay minerals (<90%) after 7 days and congruent for metakaolinite and metaillite but incongruent for metamontmorillonite.

Kaolins and clays are important raw materials for production of supplementary cementitious materials and geopolymer precursors through thermal activation by calcination beyond dehydroxylation (DHX). Both types of clay contain different polytypes and disordered structures of kaolinite but little is known about the impact of the layer stacking of dioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates on optimum thermal activation conditions and following reactivity with alkaline solutions. The objective of the present study was to improve understanding of the impact of layer stacking in dioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates on the thermal activation by investigating the atomic structure after dehydroxylation. Heating experiments by simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) followed by characterization of the dehydroxylated materials by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with first-principles calculations were performed. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized for correlation of geometry-optimized structures to thermodynamic stability. The resulting volumes of unit cells were compared with data from dilatometry studies. The local structure changes were correlated with experimental results of increasing DHX temperature in the following order: disordered kaolinite, kaolinite, and dickite, whereupon dickite showed two dehydroxylation steps. Intermediate structures were found that were thermodynamically stable and partially dehydroxylated to a degree of DHX of 75% for kaolinite, 25% for disordered kaolinite, and 50% for dickite. These thermodynamically stable, partially dehydroxylated intermediates contained AlV while metakaolinite and metadickite contained only AlIV with a strongly distorted coordination shell. These results indicate strongly the necessity for characterization of the structure of dioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates in kaolins and clays as a key parameter to predict optimized calcination conditions and resulting reactivity.

The cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a characteristic property of expandable clay minerals, such as smectites and vermiculites. The aim of this work was to examine the cation exchange behavior of vermiculite using the Cu-triethylenetetramine (Cu-trien) CEC method and the influence of mechanical and chemical pretreatment, with the ammonium acetate method serving as a reference. The Cu-trien method makes rapid and direct CEC measurements possible. Three different kinds of mill were used to grind a vermiculite sample from Russia, in order to reduce the particle size to <10 µm. The Netzsch CGS 10 dry mill reduced the particle size more effectively than the other grinding methods. Chemical pretreatments were used to remove carbonates, organic matter, Fe oxides, and divalent exchangeable cations from vermiculite samples prior to CEC measurements. Subsamples of ground and chemically pretreated vermiculite samples were saturated with Na, Li, Mg, Ca, and Cu cations to determine the effect of exchangeable cations on measured CEC values. Chemical pretreatment, monovalent cation pretreatment, and 48 h of shaking time were needed to measure vermiculite CEC values effectively using the Cu-trien method.

To date, ~1% of all bacteria that occur in environmental ecosystems such as soil, sedimentary rocks, and groundwater have been described. Comprehensive explanation of ecological interactions on a microscale level is thus almost impossible. The Dynamic Cultivation System (DCS) was developed in order to detect more microbial taxa than with common cultivation approaches, as well as previously undescribed bacterial species. The DCS is a quick and easy in situ method for the cultivation of numerous bacterial taxa in support of the description of microbial colonized ecosystems. To investigate the bacterial populations within a clay-maturation process after mining the raw material, the DCS was used to increase the microbial biomass for further molecular analysis. Two different methods were applied to extract the bacteria from the DCS and these were compared in terms of efficiency at detection of large numbers of different taxa and in terms of applicability to the detection of previously undescribed species in raw clays. A collection of different undescribed species was detected with sequencing. While direct picking of bacterial colonies leads to the detection of different genera, species mainly of the genus Arthobacter were proved in the phosphate-buffered saline-suspended biomass. Thus, a combination of the approaches mentioned above is recommended to increase the number of detectable species. The DCS will help to describe better the microbial content of ecosystems, especially soils that contain charged particles.

Layer charge (LC) is a fundamental property of smectite but its measurement remains challenging and tedious to apply on a high-throughput basis. The present study demonstrates that the position of a sharp, high-energy O—D stretching band of adsorbed D2O (νO—D, at ~2686–2700 cm−1), determined by infrared spectroscopy, correlates with LC and provides a simple method for its measurement. Twenty nine natural dioctahedral smectites and 14 reduced-charge montmorillonites with LC determined previously by different methodologies were saturated with D2O and examined by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). The samples included smectites in Mg, Ca, Na, Li, K, and Cs forms and covered the full range of the smectite LC (0.2 to 0.6 e per formula unit). Statistically significant correlations were found between νO—D and LC values determined with each of the two main methods of LC determination: the structural formula method (R2 = 0.96, σ = 0.02, ~0.2 < LC < 0.6) and the alkylammonium method (R2 = 0.92, σ = 0.01, 0.27 < LC < 0.37). These correlations were based on Li- and Na-saturated smectites, respectively, but other cationic forms can be employed provided that the exchangeable cations are of sufficiently high hydration enthalpy (e.g. Mg2+ or Ca2+, but not K+ or Cs+). The new method is fast, low-cost, implemented easily in laboratories equipped with ATR-FTIR, and applicable to samples as small as ~5 mg.

The two high-pressure water-retaining dams at the Ibbenbüren coalmine in Münsterland (Germany) have to perform reliably under the induced tension caused by further exploitation of the current mining area. The load-bearing and the sealing functions of the new barriers were separated and new sealing materials were developed. An innovative multilayer sealing system of bentonite and sandwiched equipotential layers (SANDWICH) supporting homogeneous swelling and sealing, independent of formation water (Nüesch et al., 2002), was applied in this project. A testing program of strain-controlled swelling pressure tests on compacted bentonite specimens and on a bentonite/sand mixture was conducted to ensure an adequate potential for swelling-pressure development.

The measurements under constant volume for dry densities between 1.45 g/cm3 and 1.67 g/cm3 showed an evolving swelling pressure between 1.04 and 1.8 MPa for 100% bentonite samples. Straincontrolled oedometer tests for zero strain and step-wise applied strain up to 2% revealed that a sufficient magnitude of swelling pressure existed at maximum applied strain.

The rectorite, a regular mixed layer mineral consisting of dioctahedral swelling and non-swelling 2:1 layers, from North Little Rock, Arkansas, was studied to define the crystal chemistry and structural parameters (e.g. layer charge of the different layers, presence of cis/trans-vacancies). X-ray diffraction, simultaneous thermal analysis coupled with mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence and cation exchange capacity are used to characterize this rectorite. The rectorite has a coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.19 and a cation exchange capacity of 60 cmol(+)/kg, as determined by the ammonium acetate method. The mineral is best described as a regular interstratification of brammallite-like and highcharged beidellite-like layers. Dehydration occurs at ≈118°C with a mass loss of 6.77% and dehydroxylation occurs in two steps at 470°C and 588°C with an overall mass loss of 4.67%. Peak decomposition of the mass spectrometer curve of evolved water shows ≈20% peak area with a maximum higher than 600°C, indicating ≈20% cis-vacant layers.
