The potential use of fatty acid (FA) profile as a dietary tracer in juvenile Chinese horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus was assessed in a feeding experiment. Selected feed was provided to the juveniles at various growth stages according to their food sources in the wild: larval and adult brine shrimp Artemia salina for the first six months, followed by a mixture of short-neck clam Ruditapes philippinarum and greasyback shrimp Metapenaeus ensis for a further six months. Juvenile horseshoe crab haemolymph and tissues of book gill, opisthosomal spine, chelicera and swimming leg were sampled after the feeding experiment. The FA profiles revealed that the juvenile haemolymph and various tissues had a total of 23–24 FA components. The major FA components consisted of saturated (palmitic and stearic) at 22–34%, monosaturated (oleic) at 7–34% and polyunsaturated (eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic) FAs at 9–27%. According to principal component analysis, the FA signatures of juvenile haemolymph were greatly influenced by the shift of food sources from brine shrimp to clam and shrimp meat, whereas the FA profiles of different tissues were more resistant to the nutrient alteration. The present findings confirmed that the FA profile of both juvenile haemolymph and different tissues reflected the FA composition of recent and previous diets, respectively; and thus may be useful in indicating the foraging information of juvenile horseshoe crabs in the field.

The synthesis of hexagonal aluminum nitride (AlN) nanoparticles and nanowhiskers by using direct nitridation of aluminum powders is presented in this work. After mixing aluminum powders with carbon and silica (derived from rice bran ashes) at a cryogenic temperature, the homogeneous mixture was heat treated/examined in a differential scanning calorimeter/tube furnace under N2 atmosphere. Under a maximum temperature of 1450 °C in N2 atmosphere, the as-milled aluminum-carbon-silica powder mixtures transformed completely into AlN nanoparticles and nanowhiskers with a trace of graphite. The formation mechanisms for AlN nanoparticles and nanowhiskers are discussed.

“Extracting the elastic and viscoelastic properties of a polymeric film using a sharp indentation relaxation test” [J. Mater. Res. 21, 2991 (2006)]

A new approach is proposed to extract the elastic and viscoelastic properties of a polymeric film on a hard substrate using a sharp indentation relaxation test. In the theoretic formulation, a sharp indentation relaxation test on a film/substrate system was interpreted by its equivalent flat-ended punch indentation relaxation test. The radius of the equivalent flat-ended punch was determined by the residual depth of the sharp indentation. A semi-analytical solution for a flat-ended punch relaxation test was derived. Sharp indentation relaxation tests on a polymethyl methacrylate film and a polycarbonate film on a glass substrate were performed. The semi-analytical solution and the experimental results were used to extract the elastic-viscoelastic parameters of the films. The extracted elastic-viscoelastic parameters of both films were found to be in a good agreement with data sheets of the films. The proposed approach provides a simple and yet feasible way to extract “film-only” elastic and viscoelastic properties.

Deep traps in a 300-m m-thick freestanding GaN sample were characterized by deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), using Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) fabricated on the Ga polarity surface. Most of the SBDs show nearly ideal current-voltage characteristics, with both forward and reverse currents controlled by the thermionic emission mechanism. Five common traps, which include A1 (1.0 eV), A (0.66 eV), B (0.59 eV), C (0.35 eV), and D (0.25 eV), can be consistently observed in all SBDs. Two of them, A1 and C, are related to surface damage. Surprisingly, some new traps can be found in the DLTS spectra of some SBDs if higher reverse biases are used in the measurements. However, they cannot be fitted by DLTS simulations, and are likely associated with parasitic capacitance somewhere in the cryostat.

Formation of nanocrystalline composites γ-TiAl + Ti2AlN by mechanically alloying (MA) Ti50Al50 in a N2 atmosphere and subsequent annealing treatment are investigated. The development of the microstructure was monitored by x-ray diffraction, and differential thermal analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The amorphous phase could be obtained after milling for 30 h in a nitrogen atmosphere. The TEM results show that some nanocrystalline solid solution of Al in Ti also existed in the amorphous matrix. The results of annealing treatments at different temperatures for 0.5 h on the amorphous phase obtained by MA in N2 gas for 30 h show the formation of γ-phase (TiAl) and a nitride of titanium and aluminum (Ti2AlN). Available annealing treatments could produced nanocrystalline composites of γ-TiAl and Ti2AlN with a grain size less than 20 nm. With increasing annealing temperature, the crystalline sizes of γ-TiAl and Ti2AlN increase, but the values of microhardness increase slightly.
