In 2005, the Medical Treatment and Supervision (MTS) Act was enacted in Japan to hospitalize the criminally insane and to promote a self-supporting lifestyle after deinstitutionalization. As of October 2010, 490 patients remain hospitalized in 23 highly secure forensic hospitals. Most patients are diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia and exhibit symptoms of drug resistance. Battering is the most common criminal act they have committed.

The increased prevalence of the combination of criminal insanity with drug dependence is a common problem in other countries as well. It is a serious problem that diversity in prison medical care has not been achieved.

A characteristic feature of care for criminally insane patients in Japan is that they must live in a residential district where a public health center is located and close to forensic hospitals after deinstitutionalization. Although there may be concerns about social prejudice against psychiatric disorders, this limited area would help support rehabilitation of patients because medical staff can easily know the whereabouts, psychiatric condition and aspects, of daily life for each patient through frequent reports obtained from home-visiting nurses. As a result, patients who have been successfully deinstitutionalized lead a self-supporting lifestyle without treatment interruption or repetition of similar criminal acts.

In this presentation, we will show the current status of forensic care in Japan, analyze its characteristics and problems described above, and make suggestions for the treatment of the criminally insane in countries with a small national land area such as Japan.

We report fourteen and twenty-eight protocluster candidates at z = 5.7 and 6.6 over 14 and 19 deg2 areas, respectively, selected from 2,230 Lyα emitters (LAEs) photometrically identified with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) deep images. Six out of the 42 protocluster candidates include at least 1 spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at redshifts up to z = 6.574. By the comparisons with the cosmological Lyα radiative transfer (RT) model reproducing LAEs with the reionization effects, we find that more than a half of these protocluster candidates might be progenitors of the present-day clusters with a mass of ≳ 1014M⊙. We also investigate the correlation between LAE overdensity and Lya rest-frame equivalent width (EW), because the cosmological Lyα RT model suggests that a slope of EW-overdensity relation is steepened towards the epoch of cosmic reionization (EoR), due to the existence of the ionized bubbles around galaxy overdensities easing the escape of Lyα emission from the partly neutral intergalactic medium. The available HSC data suggest that the slope of the EW-overdensity correlation does not evolve from the post-reionization epoch z = 5.7 to the EoR z = 6.6 beyond the moderately large statistical errors.

The ALMA twenty-six arcmin2 survey of GOODS-S at one millimeter (ASAGAO) is a deep (1σ ∼ 61μJy/beam) and wide area (26 arcmin2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with archival data, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1σ ∼ 30μJy/beam−1, synthesized beam size 0.59″ × 0.53″), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at 5σ, 45 sources at 4.5σ) among ALMA blank-field surveys. The median redshift of the 4.5σ sources is 2.4. The number counts shows that 52% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources. We create IR luminosity functions (LFs) at z = 1–3, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2 < z < 3. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggests a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the association between hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemics and meteorological conditions. We used HFMD surveillance data of all 47 prefectures in Japan from January 2000 to December 2015. Spectral analysis was performed using the maximum entropy method (MEM) for temperature-, relative humidity-, and total rainfall-dependent incidence data. Using MEM-estimated periods, long-term oscillatory trends were calculated using the least squares fitting (LSF) method. The temperature and relative humidity thresholds of HFMD data were estimated from the LSF curves. The average temperature data indicated a lower threshold at 12 °C and a higher threshold at 30 °C for risk of HFMD infection. Maximum and minimum temperature data indicated a lower threshold at 6 °C and a higher threshold at 35 °C, suggesting a need for HFMD control measures at temperatures between 6 and 35 °C. Based on our findings, we recommend the use of maximum and minimum temperatures rather than the average temperature, to estimate the temperature threshold of HFMD infections. The results obtained might aid in the prediction of epidemics and preparation for the effect of climatic changes on HFMD epidemiology.

In this paper the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy program at the University of Adelaide is described. VHE gamma rays with energies above ~5 × 1011eV are observed using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Results from the first three years observations at Woomera and the current upgrading of the telecope are described. The CANGAROO project, a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and a number of Japanese institutions, is also introduced.

It is now firmly established that a small anisotropy of the galactic cosmic rays exists, observable from Earth as a variation of intensity in sidereal time. The problem now is to determine more clearly the characteristics of the anisotropy and, in particular, its detailed spatial structure and how it depends upon the energy and composition of the cosmic rays. This is a very difficult task and, in the final analysis, may not be fully achievable from Earth-based observations. The purpose of the present paper is to describe briefly an installation now operating in Tasmania to provide further information on the spatial structure of the anisotropy.

A 14-year-old girl with anorexia nervosa (AN) was found to have an intracranial neoplasm. Atypical psychological symptoms prompted further evaluation, including electroencephalogram and neuroimaging, which revealed a sellar and suprasellar mass.This patient had an eating disorder and a brain tumor, which appear to be two unrelated conditions. However, it remains unclear how each affected the other. The diagnosis of AN, like all other psychiatric disorders, requires that possible medical etiologies and coexisting medical problems be excluded. AN and other eating disorders are particularly difficult to diagnose in children and adolescents because they often do not present in the manner typical of adults. Perceptual and cognitive disturbances associated with AN are difficult to evaluate because children and adolescents normally change over time as they progress through different stages of development. Therefore, It is particularly important to evaluate for the presence of medical conditions when a diagnosis of an eating disorder is made in a child or adolescent.

The paper deals with a specific aspect of a general survey, that is being carried out during last ten years in several regions of Serbia (former Yugoslavia, former Serbia and Montenegro) to assess population exposure to natural radioactivity based on geochemical and integrative pattern research approach. The originality regarding this work is related to the facts such as follows: the first identification and assessment of high areas of natural radiation in Serbia which provides insight into its regional characteristics, the interpretation of the results in terms of geological aspects, building types and human habits, the first introduction and field applicability of both (surface and volume trap) retro techniques in Serbia and assessment of doses and risks to the population in investigated high natural radiation rural communities.

We describe the discovery of HE 1327–2326, a dwarf or subgiant with $\mbox{[Fe/H]}=-5.4$. The star was found in a sample of bright metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. Its abundance pattern is characterized by very high C and N abundances. The detection of Sr which is overabundant by a factor of 10 as compared to iron and the Sun, suggests that neutron-capture elements had already been produced in the very early Galaxy. A puzzling Li depletion is observed in this unevolved star which contradicts the value of the primordial Li derived from WMAP and other Li studies. Possible scenarios for the origin of the abundance pattern (Pop. II or Pop. III) are presented as well as an outlook on future observations.

We present preliminary results on the chemical abundance patterns of extremely metal-poor stars obtained during an ongoing observing program with Subaru/HDS. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra have been obtained for 14 stars with [Fe/H]$\lesssim -3$. Five of them exhibit clear overabundances of carbon, a remarkable characteristic found only in the most metal-poor range. One of the carbon-rich stars, HE 1327–2326, has [Fe/H]$_{\rm NLTE}=-5.4$, the lowest Fe abundance known. No stars with ${-}5\,{<}\,$[Fe/H]$\,{<}\,{-}4$ have yet been found in our program, suggesting that quite different enrichment processes were responsible for stars with [Fe/H]$\,{<}\,{-}5$ and [Fe/H]$\,{>}\,{-}4$. While neutron-capture elements are deficient in most of our stars, one star (BS 16550–087) exhibits large enhancements of its light neutron-capture elements (Sr, Y and Zr), providing a strong constraint on models for the production of such elements in the very early Galaxy.

The aligned carbon nanofibers were synthesized on Si substrates using RF magnetron sputtering with a hot filament. The hot filament was made of tungsten wire and its temperature was up to 2000°C during the deposition. Nitrogen was used as the sputter gas at a relatively low pressure of 2×10-2 Torr. The sputtering deposition was carried out at a substrate temperature of 700°C. The nanofibers were grown vertically on the substrates. The diameters and the density of the fibers were about 30–45 nm and 109 cm-2, respectively.

LiNi1−xCoxO2(x=0.2, 0.3, 0.4) was synthesized through a sintering process from two different types of source materials of nickel and cobalt, namely each respective hydroxide and oxide, and composite hydroxide. Influence of the difference on charge-discharge characteristics, crystal structure and distribution of the metal elements was investigated.

The composite hydroxides formulated in Ni1−xCox(OH)2 as the source material brought better homogenized composite lithiated nickel based metal oxides exhibiting the larger specific discharge capacity. Further modification of LiNi0.6Co0.4)2 by manganese through sintering from the composite hydroxide including manganese brought a good charge-discharge cycle performance as well as a high discharge capacity of 160mAh/g level.

A cylindrical test cell of 18mm in diameter and 65mm in height using the LiNi0.6Co0.3Mn0.1O2 exhibited discharge capacity of 1700mAh which is larger than that using LiCoO2, and also exhibited a competitive charge-discharge cycle performance to commercialized lithium ion batteries.

Hydrogen gas evolution from water dispersing nanoparticles under 60Co γ-ray irradiation was investigated under various conditions. Dispersion of TiO2, A12O3, ZnO, ZrO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles with average sizes of 6 nm - 11 µm showed hydrogen yields much higher than that obtained by pure water radiolysis, and the yields seemed to depend on their particle size and shape rather than their chemical species. Hydrogen yield increased with increasing γ-dose but not linearly, which implies the occurrence of a kind of reversing reaction. Some of the nanoparticles supported with Pt, Au and Pd were also examined. The yields were strongly affected by these noble metals, which indicates an important role of the particle surface in the total mechanism of the present hydrogen evolution.

Since the discovery of fading X-rays from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with BeppoSAX (Piro et al. 1997, Costa et al. 1997), world-wide follow-up observations in optical band have achieved the fruitful results. The case of GRB 970228, there was an optical transient, coincides with the BeppoSAX position and faded (Paradijs et al. 1997, Sahu et al. 1997). These optical observations also confirmed the extended component, which was associated with the optical transient. The new transient are fading with a power-law function in time and the later observation of HST confirmed the extended emission is stable (Fruchter et al. 1997). This extended object seems to be a distant galaxy and strongly suggests to be the host.

The films of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSMO) were prepared on single-crystal SrTiO3(100) and polycrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates by dipping-pyrolysis process using metal naphthenates as starting materials. The crystallinity, grain alignment, morphology and electric properties of the films were compared. Epitaxial films were found to grow on SrTiO3, heat-treated at 1200°C, by x-ray diffraction, and to exhibit very smooth surfaces by SEM and AFM observations. On the other hand, the surfaces of the polycrystalline films grown on YSZ consisted of round-shaped LSMO grains. The resistivity of the epitaxial films was about two orders of magnitude lower than that of the polycrystalline films prepared under the same conditions. Preparation of epitaxial LSMO films on SrTiO3(110) is also presented.

Among 13 BL Lacs observed with Ginga, 1H 0323+022, Mkn 421 and PKS 2155-304 exhibited significant variablity during each (typically one day) observation. On the flux-hardness plane, the data points obtained from each source draw a sort of clockwise hysteresis motion. It means that the spectrum hardens before the source gets brighter, while the spectrum softens before the source becomes fainter. Such a soft-lag behavior, first pointed out for PKS2155-304 by Sembay et al. These properties were also confirmed with the discrete cross correlation function technique.

Alteration minerals from a drill-core (maximum depth 2002 m) in the granitic rock at Ashio, central Japan, were studied by optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and analytical scanning electron microscopy. In the host rock, biotite is altered to chlorite and plagioclase to illite. Calcite has precipitated in veinlets and grain boundaries. The host rock close to fractures is strongly altered, whereas the rocks distant from fractures are less altered. Quartz, illite, chlorite, laumontite and calcite have precipitated on fracture walls. The alteration minerals are estimated to have formed in the range 140–200°C, higher than the present temperature (13°96°C). The chemical composition of the ground water in the granitic rock at Ashio was estimated thermodynamically from the mineral assemblage. The alteration reaction of palgioclase and the precipitation of calcite may occur simultaneously. The alteration minerals formed in the host rock and in the fractures may adsorb radionuclides effectively, and thus may inhibit radionuclide transport to biosphere.

Microstructures of two MPMG processed YBaCuO materials with and without Y2BaCuO5 (211) inclusions were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Using the MPMG process, it is possible to change the quantity of the 211 inclusions in the YBa2Cu3O7 (123) matrix. We prepared two YBaCuO samples with 0 and 30 vol. % 211 and with respective critical current density values of 2000 and 30 000 A/cm2 at 77 K and 1 T (magnetic field parallel to the c-axis). As possible pinning centers, we found stacking faults in the 123 matrix. However, we observed no appreciable change in their number and structure by introducing the 211 inclusions. Therefore, the difference in Jc values can be attributed to the 211 inclusion itself.
