ZnS:Cu,Cl,Mn,Te, which shows red AC powder electroluminescence (ACPEL) emission, was synthesized using a conventional wet synthesis and a sealed vessel method. The photoluminescence (PL) and ACPEL were characterized. After the second firing, 0.5 wt% tellurium (Te)-doped ZnS:Cu,Cl,Mn,Te phosphor shows almost red PL emission from the 4T1–6A1 transition of Mn2+ ions, which are affected by the Te. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure analysis on the Mn K edge proved that the substitution of sulfur (S) with Te changes the local crystal field of the Mn2+ ions and shifts an orange emission (∼588 nm) to a red emission (∼650 nm). A red ACPEL emission is first shown in 0.5 wt%Te-doped ZnS:Cu,Cl,Mn,Te after the third firing phosphor even though its luminance is not very high. The origin of the ACPEL emission is assumed to be not a CuxS–ZnS p–n junction but a CuxTe–ZnS p–n junction. Raman spectra were characterized to support that the red ACPEL emission is probably attributed to a CuxTe–ZnS p–n junction.

Plasma doping (PLAD) process utilizing PH3 plasma to fabricate n-type junction with supplied bias of −1 kV and doping time of 60 sec under the room temperature is presented. The RTA process is performed at 900 °C for 10 sec. A defect-free surface is corroborated by TEM and DXRD analyses, and examined SIMS profiles reveal that shallow n+ junctions are formed with surface doping concentration of 1021atoms/cm3. The junction depth increases in proportion to the O2 gas flow when the N2 flow is fixed during the RTA process, resulting in a decreased sheet resistance. Measured doping profiles and the sheet resistance confirm that the n+ junction depth less than 52 nm and minimum sheet resistance of 313 Ω/□ are feasible.

Neointimal hyperplasia is a main cause for in-stent restenosis after stent-implantation and is triggered by inflammatory response to foreign materials. It can be inhibited if the stent is modified to have good blood compatibility by coating drug compounds. Low temperature plasma polymerization of 1, 2-diaminocyclohexane was performed to prepare more adhesive polymeric thin film onto the metallic stent. Then, the chemical grafting of α-lipoic acid (ALA) was carried out to improve blood compatibility of stent. Drugs containing carboxylic groups can be chemically grafted through the formation of amide bond in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide methiodide onto the DACH deposited stent surface. ALA grafted film showed good mechanical stability and blood compatibility.

To investigate the effects of three different conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) preparations containing different ratios of CLA isomers on insulin signalling, fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial function, Sprague–Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet either unsupplemented or supplemented with one of three CLA preparations at 1 % of the diet for 8 weeks. The first CLA preparation contained approximately 30 % cis-9, trans-11 (c9, t11)-CLA isomer and 40 % trans-10, cis-12 (t10, c12)-CLA isomer (CLA-mix). The other two preparations were an 80:20 mix (c9, t11-CLA-mix) or a 10:90 mix of two CLA isomers (t10, c12-CLA-mix). Insulin resistance was decreased in all three supplemented groups based on the results of homeostasis model assessment and the revised quantitative insulin-sensitivity check index. The phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1 on serine decreased in the livers of all three supplemented groups, while subsequent Akt phosphorylation increased only in the t10, c12-CLA-mix group. Both the c9, t11-CLA-mix and the t10, c12-CLA-mix increased the expression of hepatic adiponectin receptors R1 and 2, which are thought to enhance insulin sensitivity and fat oxidation. The c9, t11-CLA-mix increased protein and mRNA levels of PPARα, acyl-CoA oxidase and uncoupling protein, which are involved in fatty acid oxidation and energy dissipation. The c9, t11-CLA-mix enhanced mitochondrial function and protection against oxidative stress by increasing the activities of cytochrome c oxidase, manganese-superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase and the level of GSH. In conclusion, all three CLA preparations reduced insulin resistance. Among them, the c9, t11-CLA-mix was the most effective based on the parameters reflecting insulin resistance and fat oxidation, and mitochondrial antioxidative enzyme activity in the liver.

Novel organic sensitizers comprising donor; electron-conducting, and anchoring groups were engineered at molecular level and synthesized. The functionalized unsymmetrical organic sensitizers 3-{5-[N,N-Bis(9,9-dimethylfluorene-2-yl)phenyl]-thiophene-2-yl}-2-cyano-acrylic acid (JK-1) and 3-{5'-[N,N-Bis(9,9-dimethylfluorene-2-yl)phenyl]-2,2'-bithiophene-5-yl}-2-cyano-acrylic acid (JK-2), upon anchoring onto TiO2 film exhibit unprecedented incident photon to current conversion efficiency 91 %. The photovoltaic data using an electrolyte having composition of 0.6M M-methyl-N-butyl imidiazolium iodide, 0.04 M iodine, 0.025 M LiI, 0.05M guanidinium thiocyanate and 0.28 M tert.butylpyridine in 15/85 (v/v) mixture of valeronitrile and acetonitrile revealed a short circuit photocurrent density of 14.0 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage of 753 mV and a fill factor of 0.76, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 8.01 % under standard AM 1.5

The good field-emission properties of carbon nanotubes coupled with their high mechanical strength, chemical stability, and high aspect ratio, make them ideal candidates for the construction of efficient and inexpensive field-emission electronic devices. The fabrication process reported here has considerable potential for use in the development of integrated radio frequency amplifiers or field emission-controllable cold electron guns for field emission displays. This fabrication process is compatible with currently used semiconductor processing technologies. Micropatterned vertically aligned carbon nanotubes were grown on planar Si surface or inside the trenches, using chemical vapor deposition, photolithography, pulsed-laser deposition, reactive ion etching, and the lift-off method. To control the field-emission current by a 3rd electrode, the gate electrode, we grew carbon nanotubes inside the trenches. This triode-type structure is the best to realize the gray-scale carbon nanotube field emission. This carbon nanotube fabrication process can be widely applied for the development of electronic devices using carbon nanotube field emitters as cold cathodes and could revolutionize the area of field-emitting electronic devices such as RF amplifiers and field emission displays.

We have grown well-aligned carbon nanotube arrays by thermal chemical vapor deposition at 800°C on Fe nanoparticles deposited by a pulsed laser on a porous Si substrate. Porous Si substrates were prepared by the electrochemical etching of p-Si(100) wafers with resistivities of 3 to 6 ωcm. These well-aligned carbon nanotube field emitter arrays are suitable for electron emission applications such as cold-cathode flat panel displays and vacuum microelectronic devices like microwave power amplifier tubes. Field emission characterization has been performed on the CNT-cathode diode device at room temperature and in a vacuum chamber below 10−6 Torr. The anode is maintained at a distance of 60[.proportional]m away from the carbon nanotube cathode arrays through an insulating spacer of polyvinyl film. The measured field emitting area is 4.0×10−5cm2. Our carbon nanotube field emitter arrays emit 1mA/cm2at the electric field, 2V/[.proportional]m. And they emit a large current density as high as 80mA/cm2 at 3V/[.proportional]m. The open tip structure of our carbon nanotubes and their good adhesion through Fe nanoparticles to the Si substrate are part of the reason why we can attain a large field emission current density within a low field. The field emitter arrays in our diode device are vertically well-aligned carbon nanotubes on the Si-wafer substrate.
