Over recent decades, Chinese giant salamanders Andrias spp. have declined dramatically across much of their range. Overexploitation and habitat degradation have been widely cited as the cause of these declines. To investigate the relative contribution of each of these factors in driving the declines, we carried out standardized ecological and questionnaire surveys at 98 sites across the range of giant salamanders in China. We did not find any statistically significant differences between water parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, salinity, alkalinity, hardness and flow rate) recorded at sites where giant salamanders were detected by survey teams and/or had been recently seen by local respondents, and sites where they were not detected and/or from which they had recently been extirpated. Additionally, we found direct and indirect evidence that the extraction of giant salamanders from the wild is ongoing, including within protected areas. Our results support the hypothesis that the decline of giant salamanders across China has been primarily driven by overexploitation. Data on water parameters may be informative for the establishment of conservation breeding programmes, an initiative recommended for the conservation of these species.

Nanotechnology has been considered as a promising strategy for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. However, the stability and circulation times of the conventional nano-carriers, such as liposomes and micelles, are still unsatisfied. Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) are biologic inert synthetic materials, which are highly hydrophobic and have a tendency to self-aggregation. Additionally, PFCs themselves can act as 19F magnetic resonance imaging agents and oxygen carriers. Thus, the construction of the fluorinated carriers will not only improve the stability of the carriers, but also endow them with additional functions. Here we review the recent advances of PFC-based nanosystems for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

A coaxial-output rolled strip pulse-forming line (RSPFL) with a dry structure is researched for the purpose of miniaturization and all-solid state of pulse-forming lines (PFL). The coaxial-output RSPFL consists of a coaxial-output electrode (COE) and a rolled strip line (RSL). The COE is characterized by quasi-coaxial structure, making the output pulse propagate along the axial direction with a small output inductance. The RSL is rolled on the COE, whose transmission characteristics are analyzed theoretically. It shows that the RSL can be regarded as a planar strip line when the rolling radius of the strip line is larger than 60 times of the thickness of the insulation dielectric layer of RSL. CST modeling was carried out to simulate the discharging characteristic of the coaxial-output RSPFL. It shows that the coaxial-output RSPFL can deliver a discharging pulse with a rise time <6 ns when the impedance of the RSL matches that of the COE, which confirms the theoretical analysis. A prototype of the coaxial-output RSPFL was developed. A 49-kV discharging pulse on a matched load was achieved when it was charged to 100 kV. The discharging waveform has a pulse width of 32 ns, with a rise time of 6 ns, which is consistent with the simulation waveform. An energy-storage density of 1.9 J/L was realized in the coaxial-output RSPFL. By the method of multi-stage connection in series, a much higher output voltage is convenient to be obtained.

A method to design the composite insulation structures in pulsed power systems is proposed in this paper. The theoretical bases for this method include the Weibull statistical distribution and the empirical insulation formula. A uniform formula to describe the reliability (R) for different insulation media such as solid, liquid, gas, vacuum, and vacuum surface is derived. The dependence curves of the normalized applied field on R are also obtained. These curves show that the normalized applied field decreases rapidly as R increases but the declining rates corresponding to different insulation media are different. In addition, if R is required to be higher than a given level, the normalized applied field should be smaller than a certain value. In practical design, the common range of the applied fields for different insulation media should be chosen to meet a global reliability requirement. In the end, the proposed method is demonstrated with a specific coaxial high-voltage vacuum insulator.

Approximately 50 % of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) suffer from anaemia, with Fe deficiency being the most common cause. CD52 monoclonal antibody (mAb) targets the cell surface CD52 and is effective in depleting lymphocytes through cytolytic effects in vivo. The aim of the present study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of anti-mouse CD52 mAb on Fe-deficient anaemia in IBD. IL-10 knockout mice (IL-10− / −) of 12 weeks with established colitis were treated with anti-mouse CD52 mAb once per week for 2 weeks. Severity of colitis, blood T lymphocytes, blood Hb, haematocrit, plasma erythropoietin (EPO), serum Fe concentration, transferrin saturation, splenic Fe stores, expression of liver hepcidin mRNA, Western blotting of the phosphorylated form of Smad1/5/8 and total Smad1 were measured at the end of the experiment. IL-10− / − mice treated with CD52 mAb showed a reduction in the percentage of CD4+ and CD4+CD45+ T cells in blood and weight loss typically associated with colonic inflammation, serum levels of EPO, the expression of liver hepcidin mRNA and total Smad1 protein, while they showed an increase in Hb concentrations, haematocrit, levels of serum Fe, transferrin saturation and splenic Fe stores. The present results indicated that anti-CD52 therapy may ameliorate Fe-deficient anaemia by reducing colonic inflammation. These findings may open novel horizons in the treatment of patients with IBD by resetting of immunological homeostasis in the gut by depleting the activated T cells in the gut mucosa.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to gain insight into the difference in cycling behaviors between the ethylene carbonate (EC)-based and the propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolytes in lithium-ion battery cells. DFT calculations for the ternary graphite intercalation compounds (Li+(S)iCn: S=EC or PC), in which the solvated lithium ion Li+(S)i (i=1~3) was inserted into a graphite cell, suggested that Li+(EC)iCn was more stable than Li+(PC)iCn in general. Furthermore, Li+(PC)3Cn was found to be energetically unfavorable, while Li+(PC)2Cn was stable, relative to their corresponding Li+(PC)i in the bulk electrolyte. The calculations also revealed severe structural distortions of the PC molecule in Li+(PC)3Cn, suggesting a rapid kinetic effect on PC decomposition reactions, as compared to decompositions of EC. In addition, MD simulations were carried out to examine the solvation structures at a high salt concentration: 2.45 mo kg-1. The results showed that the solvation structure was significantly interrupted by the counter anions, having a smaller solvation number than that at a lower salt concentration (0.83 mol kg-1). We propose that at high salt concentrations, the lithium desolvation may be facilitated due to the increased contact ion pairs, so that a stable ternary GIC with less solvent molecules can be formed without the destruction of graphite particles, followed by solid-electrolyte-interface film formation reactions. The results from both DFT calculations and MD simulations are consistent with the recent experimental observations.

Crystal structure, pressure response, and polymorph transformation were investigated for crystalline indole through dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) method. An accurate, nonempirical method (as in the latest implementations of CASTEP) is used to correct for the general DFT scheme to include van der Waals interactions important in molecular crystals. Ambient structural details, including space group symmetry, density, and fine structural details, such as bicyclic angles, have been reproduced to within experimental accuracy. Pressure response of the structure was obtained to isostatic pressure up to 25 GPa, in increments of 1 GPa. Evolution of space group symmetry and the bicyclic angle were mapped as a function of pressure. A previously unknown phase transformation has been identified around 14 GPa of isostatic pressure. Total energies of the phases before and after phase transformation are nearly identical, with a phase transformation barrier of 0.9 eV. The study opens up the door to reliable DFT investigations of chemical reactions of crystalline aromatic systems under high pressure (e.g. formation of amorphous sp3 hybridized phases).

We investigated adsorption and dissociation of water and HfCl4 on a Ge/Si(100) −(2 × 1) surface with a density-functional theory. The Si–Ge and Ge–Ge homodimers are used to represent the Si1−xGex surface. (i) Water first adsorbs on the bare Ge/Si(100) − (2 × 1) surface and then dissociates into OH and H. The activation energy for adsorption of water on the Ge–Ge homodimer is much higher than that on the Si–Ge heterodimer. (ii) HfCl4 dissociates upon adsorption on the Ge/Si(100) − (2 × 1) surface into HfCl3 and Cl. No net activation barrier exists during the adsorption of HfCl4 on both SiGe surface dimers. The molecular adsorption state is found to be metastable according to the calculation, which implies that the reaction tends to move toward to the product rather than trapping in HfCl4 adsorbed state. The difference in the potential energy surface between reactions on Si–Ge and Ge–Ge dimers is due to different bond strengths.

Enthalpies of formation were determined for β-sialon phases (Si6–zAlzOzN8–z, z = 0.46 to 3.6) by high-temperature oxidative drop solution calorimetry using an alkali-metal borate (52 wt% LiBo2; 48 wt% NaBO2) solvent. Oxygen gas was bubbled through the melt to accelerate oxidation of the oxynitride samples during dissolution. Sialons near z = 2 appear less stable energetically than ones with higher or lower nitrogen content. A large configurational entropy contribution for sialons with z > 2 may further stabilize these materials. This larger free energy driving form may be the reason for success in pulse-activated processing of these materials. The enthalpies of formation further suggest that a greater driving form for oxynitride formation exists in batch synthesis using SiO2 rather than Al2O3.

High-temperature oxidative drop solution calorimetry was used to measure the enthalpy of formation of α− and β−Si3N4. Two different solvents, molten alkali borate (48 wt% LiBO2 · 52 wt% NaBO2) at 1043 and 1073 K and potassium vanadate (K2O · 3V2O5) at 973 K, were used, giving the same results. Pure α− and β−Si3N4 polymorphs have the same molar enthalpy of formation at 298 K of −850.9 ± 22.4 and −852.0 ± 8.7 kJ/mol, respectively. The unit cell dimensions of impure α−Si3N4 samples depend linearly on the O and C impurity contents, and so does the molar enthalpy of formation. The energetic stability of the α−Si3N4phase decreases when the sample contains O and C impurities. The experimental evidence strongly suggests that the impurities dissolve into the α−Si3N4 structure to form a (limited) isostructural solid solution series but that this solid solution series is energetically less stable than a mechanical mixture of pure (α or β) Si3N4, SiO2, and SiC. Thus, the α-phase is not stabilized by impurities and is probably always metastable.

The enthalpies of formation of two rare-earth silicates (Y2SiO5 and Yb2SiO5) and a N-containing rare-earth silicate Y10(SiO4)6N2 have been determined using high-temperature drop solution calorimetry. Alkali borate (52 wt% LiBO2·48 wt% NaBO2) solvent was used at 800 °C, and oxygen gas was bubbled through the melt. The nitrogen-containing silicate was oxidized during dissolution. The standard enthalpies of formation are for Y2SiO5, Yb2SiO5, and Y10(SiO4)6N2, respectively, –22868.54 ± 5.34, –22774.75 ± 8.21, and –14145.20 ± 16.48 kJ/mol from elements, and –52.53 ± 4.83, –49.45 6 ± 8.35, and –94.53 ± 11.66 kJ/mol from oxides (Y2O3 or Yb2O3, SiO2) and nitride (Si3N4). The silicates and N-containing silicate are energetically stable with respect to binary oxides and Si3N4, but the N-containing silicate may be metastable with respect to assemblages containing Y2SiO5, Si3N4, and SiO2. A linear relationship was found between the enthalpy of formation of a series of M2SiO5 silicates from binary oxides and the ionic potential (z/r) of the metal cation.
