As a promising machine learning method for active flow control (AFC), deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has been successfully applied in various scenarios, such as the drag reduction for stationary cylinders under both laminar and weakly turbulent conditions. However, current applications of DRL in AFC still suffer from drawbacks including excessive sensor usage, unclear search paths and insufficient robustness tests. In this study, we aim to tackle these issues by applying DRL-guided self-rotation to suppress the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder under the lock-in condition. With a state space consisting only of the acceleration, velocity and displacement of the cylinder, the DRL agent learns an effective control strategy that successfully suppresses the VIV amplitude by $99.6\,\%$. Through systematic comparisons between different combinations of sensory-motor cues as well as sensitivity analysis, we identify three distinct stages of the search path related to the flow physics, in which the DRL agent adjusts the amplitude, frequency and phase lag of the actions. Under the deterministic control, only a little forcing is required to maintain the control performance, and the VIV frequency is only slightly affected, showing that the present control strategy is distinct from those utilizing the lock-on effect. Through dynamic mode decomposition analysis, we observe that the growth rates of the dominant modes in the controlled case all become negative, indicating that DRL remarkably enhances the system stability. Furthermore, tests involving various Reynolds numbers and upstream perturbations confirm that the learned control strategy is robust. Finally, the present study shows that DRL is capable of controlling VIV with a very small number of sensors, making it effective, efficient, interpretable and robust. We anticipate that DRL could provide a general framework for AFC and a deeper understanding of the underlying physics.

We report the unified constitutive law of vibroconvective turbulence in microgravity, i.e. $Nu \sim a^{-1} Re_{os}^\beta$ where the Nusselt number $Nu$ measures the global heat transport, $a$ is the dimensionless vibration amplitude, $Re_{os}$ is the oscillational Reynolds number and $\beta$ is the universal exponent. We find that the dynamics of boundary layers plays an essential role in vibroconvective heat transport and the $Nu$-scaling exponent $\beta$ is determined by the competition between the thermal boundary layer (TBL) and vibration-induced oscillating boundary layer (OBL). Then a physical model is proposed to explain the change of scaling exponent from $\beta =2$ in the TBL-dominant regime to $\beta = 4/3$ in the OBL-dominant regime. Our finding elucidates the emergence of universal constitutive laws in vibroconvective turbulence, and opens up a new avenue for generating a controllable effective heat transport under microgravity or even microfluidic environment in which the gravity effect is nearly absent.

Flowering plants depend on some animals for pollination and contribute to nourish the animals in natural environments. We call these animals pollinators and build a plants-pollinators cooperative model with impulsive effect on a periodically evolving domain. Next, we define the ecological reproduction index for single plant model and plants-pollinators system, respectively, whose threshold dynamics, including the extinction, persistence and coexistence, is established by the method of upper and lower solutions. Theoretical analysis shows that a large domain evolution rate has a positive influence on the survival of pollinators whether or not the impulsive effect occurs, and the pulse eliminates the pollinators even when the evolution rate is high. Moreover, some selective numerical simulations are still performed to explain our theoretical results.

We show that the mode-locking region of the family of quasi-periodically forced Arnold circle maps with a topologically generic forcing function is dense. This gives a rigorous verification of certain numerical observations in [M. Ding, C. Grebogi and E. Ott. Evolution of attractors in quasiperiodically forced systems: from quasiperiodic to strange nonchaotic to chaotic. Phys. Rev. A 39(5) (1989), 2593–2598] for such forcing functions. More generally, under some general conditions on the base map, we show the density of the mode-locking property among dynamically forced maps (defined in [Z. Zhang. On topological genericity of the mode-locking phenomenon. Math. Ann. 376 (2020), 707–72]) equipped with a topology that is much stronger than the $C^0$ topology, compatible with smooth fiber maps. For quasi-periodic base maps, our result generalizes the main results in [A. Avila, J. Bochi and D. Damanik. Cantor spectrum for Schrödinger operators with potentials arising from generalized skew-shifts. Duke Math. J. 146 (2009), 253–280], [J. Wang, Q. Zhou and T. Jäger. Genericity of mode-locking for quasiperiodically forced circle maps. Adv. Math. 348 (2019), 353–377] and Zhang (2020).

Mosquito-borne diseases have emerged in North Borneo in Malaysia due to rapid changes in the forest landscape, and mosquito surveillance is key to understanding disease transmission. However, surveillance programmes involving sampling and taxonomic identification require well-trained personnel, are time-consuming and labour-intensive. In this study, we aim to use a deep leaning model (DL) to develop an application capable of automatically detecting mosquito vectors collected from urban and suburban areas in North Borneo, Malaysia. Specifically, a DL model called MobileNetV2 was developed using a total of 4880 images of Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, which are widely distributed in Malaysia. More importantly, the model was deployed as an application that can be used in the field. The model was fine-tuned with hyperparameters of learning rate 0.0001, 0.0005, 0.001, 0.01 and the performance of the model was tested for accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score. Inference time was also considered during development to assess the feasibility of the model as an app in the real world. The model showed an accuracy of at least 97%, a precision of 96% and a recall of 97% on the test set. When used as an app in the field to detect mosquitoes with the elements of different background environments, the model was able to achieve an accuracy of 76% with an inference time of 47.33 ms. Our result demonstrates the practicality of computer vision and DL in the real world of vector and pest surveillance programmes. In the future, more image data and robust DL architecture can be explored to improve the prediction result.

We investigate numerically the propulsion characteristics of an oscillating foil undergoing coupled heave and pitch motion in a linearly density-stratified flow. A parameter space defined by the internal Froude number ($1 \le Fr \le 10$) and the maximum angle of attack ($5^\circ \le {\alpha _0} \le 30^\circ$) is considered in our study. The results demonstrate a significant enhancement in both thrust production and propulsive efficiency due to the stratification influence. Notably, the highest efficiency exceeding $80\,\%$ is achieved under moderate stratification conditions, surpassing the performance observed in a homogeneous fluid. We attribute this optimum performance to the proper match between the stratification effect and foil kinematics, which gives rise to intense vortex interactions and sufficient wave–mean flow interactions in the near wake of the oscillating foil. Consequently, the energy is transferred towards wake structures to form a high-intensity momentum jet in close proximity to the foil's trailing edge, indicating efficient propulsion. Furthermore, we find that the stratifications within the moderate-to-strong transitional regime display a reduced dependence of propulsive efficiency on the maximum angle of attack, primarily due to the delaying and alleviating effects on dynamic-stall events. Such a mechanism enables the oscillating foil to maintain a satisfactory performance by sufficiently high angles of attack without the penalty of stall events. Based on our findings, we propose that animals or artificial vehicles utilising oscillatory propulsion can benefit from the presence of density stratification in the surrounding fluid.

In the present study, acid-modified attapulgite was used, as an adsorbent, to remove as much Cd2+ as possible from aqueous solution. Static adsorption experiments using powdered acid-modified attapulgite, and dynamic adsorption using granular acid-modifed attapulgite, were conducted to explore the practical application of modified attapulgite in the adsorption of Cd2+. The modified attapulgite had a larger specific surface area and thinner fibrous crystals than the unmodified version. No obvious differences were noted, in terms of the crystal structure, between the natural attapulgite and the modified version. The effects of initial concentration, pH, contact time, and ionic strength on the adsorption of Cd2+ were investigated, and the results showed that the adsorption capacity of the modified attapulgite was increased with increasing pH and the initial Cd2+ concentration. The adsorption properties were analyzed by means of dynamic adsorption tests with respect to various Cd2+ concentrations and flow rates. The maximum adsorption capacity of 8.83 mg/g occurred at a flow rate of 1 mL/min and at an initial concentration of 75 mg/L. Because there was better accord between the data and a pseudo-second order model than a pseudo-first-order model, external mass transfer is suggested to be the rate-controlling process. The experimental data were also fitted for the intraparticle diffusion model, implying that the intraparticle diffusion of Cd2+ onto the modified attapulgite was also important for controlling the adsorption process. The Bohart-Adams model was more suitable than the Thomas model for describing the dynamic behavior with respect to the flow rate and the initial Cd2+ concentration. This research provided the theoretical basis for the dynamic adsorption of Cd2+ on the modified attapulgite. Compared to the powdered modified attapulgite, the dynamic adsorption by granular modified attapulgite appeared more favorable in terms of practical application.

Background. The most common site of prostate cancer metastasis is bone tissue with many recent studies having conducted genomic and clinical research regarding bone metastatic prostate cancer. However, further work is needed to better define those patients that are at an elevated risk of such metastasis. Methods. SEER and TCGA databases were searched to develop a nomogram for predicting prostate cancer bone metastasis. Results. Herein, we leveraged the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to construct a predictive nomogram capable of readily and accurately predicted the odds of bone metastasis in prostate cancer patients. This nomogram was utilized to assign patients with prostate cancer included in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to cohorts at a high or low risk of bone metastasis (HRBM and LRBM, respectively). Comparisons of these LRBM and HRBM cohorts revealed marked differences in mutational landscapes between these patient cohorts, with increased frequencies of gene fusions, somatic copy number variations (CNVs), and single nucleotide variations (SNVs), particularly in the P53 gene, being evident in the HRBM cohort. We additionally identified lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs that were differentially expressed between these two patient cohorts and used them to construct a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network. Moreover, three weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) modules were constructed from the results of these analyses, with KIF14, MYH7, and COL10A1 being identified as hub genes within these modules. We further found immune response activity levels in the HRBM cohort to be elevated relative to that in the LRBM cohort, with single sample gene enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) scores for the immune checkpoint signature being increased in HRBM patient samples relative to those from LRBM patients. Conclusion. We successfully developed a nomogram capable of readily detecting patients with prostate cancer at an elevated risk of bone metastasis.

Ion adsorption-type rare earth deposits (IADs) are developed via prolonged weathering of REE-rich volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Intense magmatic activity which occurred during the Yanshanian (199.6–65.5 Ma) and Caledonian periods (542–359.2 Ma) provided an abundant material basis for the formation of IADs in South China. High concentrations of REE and the high proportion of ion-exchangeable REE were found in the Maofeng Mountain regolith, Guangzhou city. However, the geochemical patterns and mechanisms of REE enrichment in the regolith were still poorly understood. The present study investigated the regolith profile (0–8 m) developed in Maofeng Mountain based on metallogenic and geochemical characteristics, sequential extraction, and physical and chemical parameters of the regolith profile. The bedrock contained abundant REE resources (245–287 mg kg–1) and the chondrite-normalized REE patterns showed the enrichment of light REE (LREE) and negative cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu) anomalies. The distribution patterns of REE in the bedrock were inherited by the regolith. REE enrichment of the regolith occurred mainly in the completely weathered layer (B1, B2, and B3 horizons), particularly in the depth range 2.5–4.5 m (849–2391 mg kg–1). The position of REE enrichment was controlled by the soil pH (5.52–6.02), by the amount of kaolinite and halloysite, and by the permeability of the metamorphic rock. In the REE-enriched horizon (2–8 m), the REE were hosted mainly in ion-exchangeable fractions (75–2158 mg kg–1), representing 79% of the total REE. Given the pH of 4.73–6.02, REE fractionation driven by the adsorption of kaolinite was limited. Fe–Mn (oxyhydr)oxides played an important role in REE enrichment and the reducible fraction holds up to 21% (139 mg kg–1) of the total REE. The enrichment of LREE was observed in the reducible fraction potentially because of the preferential release of LREE from the LREE-bearing minerals (monazite) and then scavenged by Fe–Mn (oxyhydr)oxides. Positive Ce anomalies (Ce/Ce*: 10) were found in the reducible fraction because trivalent Ce was oxidized by Fe–Mn (oxyhydr)oxides to cerianite (CeO2). The present study helps to understand the enrichment and fractionation of REE in the IADs of South China.

Landfill leachate is one of the most difficult effluents with which to deal from an environmental perspective because of its concentration and complex composition, including refractory and toxic components such as heavy metals or xenobiotic organic compounds. The objective of the present study was to use organically modified bentonite (OMB) to dispose of landfill leachate >10 y old. The OMB was synthesized using a new method, which removed four steps (filtering, washing, drying, and grinding) from the traditional process. After treatment using OMB, the chemical oxygen demand concentration (COD concentration, an index of the organic pollutants in the landfill leachate, was determined using the potassium dichromate method) of the landfill leachate sample decreased from 2400 to 245 mg/L in 5 h, i.e. the organic pollutants reduction efficiency was as high as 90%. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry results indicated that most of the organic compounds were removed during the process. The modified and unmodified bentonite contained in the OMB deal with the hydrophobic and hydrophilic organic pollutants, respectively, resulting in significant degradation of the leachate. The study results have provided a new cost-effective method for treatment of landfill leachate.

The clinical significance and potential targets of miR-150-5p have not been elucidated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The pooled analysis based on 539 NPC samples and 75 non-NPC nasopharyngeal samples demonstrated that the expression of miR-150-5p was down-regulated in NPC, with the area under the curve being 0.89 and the standardized mean difference being −0.66. Subsequently, we further screened the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of 14 datasets, including 312 NPC samples and 70 non-NPC nasopharyngeal samples. After the DEGs were narrowed down with the predicted targets from the miRWalk database, 1316 prospective target genes of miR-150-5p were identified. The enrichment analysis suggested that “pathways in cancer” was the most significant pathway. Finally, six hub genes of “pathways in cancer”, including EGFR, TP53, HRAS, CCND1, CDH1, and FGF2, were screened out through the STRING database. In conclusion, the down-regulation of miR-150-5p modulates the tumorigenesis and progression of NPC.

Labs as guide dogs or sniffer dogs in usage have been introduced into China for more than 20 years. These two types of working dogs own blunt or acute olfactory senses, which have been obtained by artificial selection in relatively closed populations. In order to attain stable olfactory attributes and meet use-oriented demands, Chinese breeders keep doing the same artificial selection. Though olfactory behavior is canine genetic behavior, genotypes of OR genes formed by breeding schemes are largely unknown. Here, we characterized 26 SNPs, 2 deletions, and 2 insertions of 7 OR genes between sniffer dogs and guide dogs in order to find out the candidate alleles associated with working specific traits. The results showed that there were candidate functional SNP alleles in one locus that had statistically severely significant differences between the two subpopulations. Furthermore, the levels of polymorphism were not high in all loci and linkage disequilibrium only happened within one OR gene. Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) tests showed that there was a higher ratio not in HWE and lower FST within the two working dog populations. We conclude that artificial selection in working capacities has acted on SNP alleles of OR genes in a dog breed and driven the evolution in compliance with people’s intentions though the changes are limited in decades of strategic breeding.

In this study, the effects of antagonistic muscle actuation on the propulsion of a bilaminar-structure fish fin ray were investigated using a two-dimensional computational flow–structure interaction (FSI) model. The structure and material properties of the model were based on the realistic biological data of the sunfish fin. The effect of muscle actuation was modelled using root displacement offset between the two hemitrichs. Parametric FSI simulations were conducted by assuming a sinusoidal function of the offset over a cycle and varying the amplitude and phase difference between the actuations and pitching/plunging motions. The results show that the phase of muscle actuation is a critical factor affecting its effects. Three performance regions can be identified with different phase ranges, including a thrust-favour region, an efficiency-favour region and a thrust-efficiency-unfavour region. In each region, the relationships among the root actuations, fin-ray kinematics, vortex dynamics and resulting performance are studied and discussed. Furthermore, a strong positive correlation between the trailing–leading amplitude ratio and thrust coefficient as well as a negative relationship between the efficiency and angle of attack at the centre of mass of the fin ray are observed.

Dietary antioxidant indices (DAI) may be potentially associated with relative telomere length (RTL) of leucocytes. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between DAI and RTL. A cross-sectional study involving 1656 participants was conducted. A generalised linear regression model and a restricted cubic spline model were used to assess the correlation of DAI and its components with RTL. Generalised linear regression analysis revealed that DAI (β = 0·005, P = 0·002) and the intake of its constituents vitamin C (β = 0·043, P = 0·027), vitamin E (β = 0·088, P < 0·001), Se (β = 0·075, P = 0·003), and Zn (β = 0·075, P = 0·023) were significantly and positively correlated with RTL. Sex-stratified analysis showed that DAI (β = 0·006, P = 0·005) and its constituents vitamin E (β = 0·083, P = 0·012), Se (β = 0·093, P = 0·006), and Zn (β = 0·092, P = 0·034) were significantly and positively correlated with RTL among females. Meanwhile, among males, only vitamin E intake (β = 0·089, P = 0·013) was significantly and positively associated with RTL. Restricted cubic spline analysis revealed linear positive associations between DAI and its constituents’ (vitamin E, Se and Zn) intake and RTL in the total population. Sex-stratified analysis revealed a linear positive correlation between DAI and its constituents’ (vitamin E, Se and Zn) intake and RTL in females. Our study found a significant positive correlation between DAI and RTL, with sex differences.

This study investigates the effect of vibration on the flow structure transitions in thermal vibrational convection (TVC) systems, which occur when a fluid layer with a temperature gradient is excited by vibration. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of TVC in a two-dimensional enclosed square box is performed over a range of dimensionless vibration amplitudes $0.001 \le a \le 0.3$ and angular frequencies $10^{2} \le \omega \le 10^{7}$, with a fixed Prandtl number of 4.38. The flow visualisation shows the transition behaviour of flow structure upon the varying frequency, characterising three distinct regimes, which are the periodic-circulation regime, columnar regime and columnar-broken regime. Different statistical properties are distinguished from the temperature and velocity fluctuations at the boundary layer and mid-height. Upon transition into the columnar regime, columnar thermal coherent structures are formed, in contrast to the periodic oscillating circulation. These columns are contributed by the merging of thermal plumes near the boundary layer, and the resultant thermal updrafts remain at almost fixed lateral position, leading to a decrease in fluctuations. We further find that the critical point of this transition can be described nicely by the vibrational Rayleigh number ${{Ra}}_{vib}$. As the frequency continues to increase, entering the so-called columnar-broken regime, the columnar structures are broken, and eventually the flow state becomes a large-scale circulation (LSC), characterised by a sudden increase in fluctuations. Finally, a phase diagram is constructed to summarise the flow structure transition over a wide range of vibration amplitude and frequency parameters.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be an intersecting family. A $(k-1)$-set $E$ is called a unique shadow if it is contained in exactly one member of $\mathcal{F}$. Let ${\mathcal{A}}=\{A\in \binom{[n]}{k}\colon |A\cap \{1,2,3\}|\geq 2\}$. In the present paper, we show that for $n\geq 28k$, $\mathcal{A}$ is the unique family attaining the maximum size among all intersecting families without unique shadow. Several other results of a similar flavour are established as well.

The penultimate deglaciation was characterized by a sub-millennial-scale warm event in the Heinrich Stadial 11(HS11), termed the 134-ka event. However, its precise timing and structure remain poorly constrained due to the lack of high-resolution and precisely dated records. We present an oxygen isotope record of a speleothem with well-developed annual lamina from Zhangjia Cave, located on the north margin of the Sichuan Basin, characterizing Asian summer monsoon (ASM) changes in the 134-ka event, which included an increase excursion of ca. 149 years and decrease excursion of ca. 200 years, inferred from 3.3‰ δ18O variations. This event also divided the weak ASM interval-II (WMI-II), corresponding to HS11, into two stages, the WMI-IIa 132.8–134.1 ka and WMI-IIb 134.4–136.4 ka. With a comparable climatic pattern globally, the 134-ka event is essentially similar to the millennial-scale events in last glacial–deglacial period. Particularly, the observed weak-strong-weak ASM sequence (138.8–132.8 ka) is largely controlled by changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) forced by the meltwater of northern high-latitude ice sheets. Moreover, our results underpin that AMOC, rather than the global ice volume, is more critical to ASM variations during the last two deglaciations.
