The adsorption of butanol, hexanol, and octanol on alkylammonium clays of different chain length is studied. The adsorption at infinite dilution compares to the distribution of alcohol between alkane and water in bulk solution. The interlamellar phase of the montmorillonite acts as a solvent even more reactive than carbon tetrachloride. Hydrogen bonds probably occur between the OH group of the alcohol and the NH3+ group. The exchange of water by alcohol on the interlamellar alkylammonium ion is the major factor in the transfer process.

With the use of high-resolution ALMA observations, complex structures that resemble those observed in post-AGB stars and planetary nebulae are detected in the circumstellar envelopes of low-mass evolved stars. These deviations from spherical symmetry are believed to be caused primarily by the interaction with a companion star or planet. With the use of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we study the impact of a binary companion on the wind morphology and dynamics of an AGB outflow. We classifiy the wind structures and morphology that form in these simulations with the use of a classification parameter, constructed with characteristic parameters of the binary configuration. Finally we conclude that the companion alters the wind expansion velocity through the slingshot mechanism, if it is massive enough.

The relationship between the genetic and environmental risk factors for alcohol use disorders (AUD) detected in Swedish medical, pharmacy, and criminal registries has not been hitherto examined. Prior twin studies have varied with regard to the detection of shared environmental effects and sex differences in the etiology of AUD. In this report, structural equation modeling in OpenMx was applied to (1) the three types of alcohol registration in a population-based sample of male–male twins and reared-together full and half siblings (total 208,810 pairs), and (2) AUD, as a single diagnosis, in male–male, female–female, and opposite-sex (OS) twins and reared-together full and half siblings (total 787,916 pairs). An independent pathway model fit best to the three forms of registration and indicated that between 70% and 92% of the genetic and 63% and 98% of the shared environmental effects were shared in common with the remainder unique to each form of AUD registration. Criminal registration had the largest proportion of unique genetic and environmental factors. The best fit model for AUD estimated the heritability to be 22% and 57%, respectively, in females and males. Both shared (12% vs. 6%) and special twin environment (29% vs. 2%) were substantially more important in females versus males. In conclusion, AUD ascertained from medical, pharmacy, and criminal Swedish registries largely share the same genetic and environmental risk factors. Large sex differences in the etiology of AUD were seen in this sample, with substantially stronger familial environmental and weaker genetic effects in females versus males.

Background: Prior twin and adoption studies have demonstrated the importance of both genetic and shared environmental factors in the etiology of criminal behavior (CB). However, despite substantial interest in life-course theories of CB, few genetically informative studies have examined CB in a developmental context. Method: In 69,767 male–male twin pairs and full-sibling pairs with ≤ 2 years’ difference in age, born 1958–1976 and ascertained from the Swedish Twin and Population Registries, we obtained information on all criminal convictions from 1973 to 2011 from the Swedish Crime Register. We fitted a Cholesky structural model, using the OpenMx package, to CB in these pairs over three age periods: 15–19, 20–24, and 25–29. Results: The Cholesky model had two main genetic factors. The first began at ages 15–19 and declined in importance over development. The second started at ages 20–24 and was stable over time. Only one major shared environmental factor was seen, beginning at ages 15–19. Heritability for CB declined from ages 15–29, as did shared environmental effects, although at a slower rate. Conclusions: Genetic risk factors for CB in males are developmentally dynamic, demonstrating both innovation and attenuation. These results are consistent with theories of adolescent-limited and life-course persistent CB subtypes. Heritability for CB did not increase over time as might be predicted from active gene-environmental correlation. However, consistent with expectation, the proportion of variability explained by shared environmental effects declined slightly as individuals aged and moved away from their original homes and neighborhoods.

Strontium titanate (STO) thin films (45-67 % Sr) were deposited by atomic layer deposition using Sr(tBu3Cp)2/Ti(OMe)4/H2O as precursors. The Sr content of the layers is well controlled by the precursor pulse ratio, as indicated by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). The amount of Sr and Ti deposited depends on the Sr:Ti pulse ratio and indicates the enhancement of the Ti precursor reactivity in the presence of Sr-OH. STO compositions that are closer to stoichiometric SrTiO3 result in denser films with correspondingly higher index of refraction. The increase (decrease) of the Sr content over (below) 50 % leads to an expansion (contraction) of the lattice parameter corresponding to cubic SrTiO3 with a perovskite structure. The dielectric constant (extracted from film thickness series) and leakage current strongly depends both on the Sr content and the crystalline state of the films.

The electrical performance of hafnium silicate (HfSiOx) gate stacks grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been evaluated in capacitors and transistors. First, scaling potential of HfSiOx layers was studied as function of composition and thickness. It is shown that the equivalent oxide thickness scales down with decreasing layer thickness and increasing Hf-content. The gate leakage (at Vfb-1V), however, is mainly determined by the physical layer thickness. For the same equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) target, the lowest leakage is observed for the layers with the highest Hf-content. Leakage values as low as 1x10-3 A/cm2 for an equivalent oxide thickness of 1.3 nm have been obtained. Second, the thermal stability against crystallization of the ALD HfSiOx has been studied and related to their electrical properties. The thermal stability of HfSiOx decreases with increasing Hf-content that necessitates the use of nitridation. The influence of various annealing conditions on the nitrogen incorporation is also studied. Finally, the effect of HfSiOx composition and postdeposition nitridation is discussed on transistor level. TaN metal gate transistor data indicate that nitridation reduces the gate leakage and that Hf-rich HfSiOx layers show the best scaling potential, i.e., highest performance for the lowest gate leakage.

steels & belpaeme (s&b) are clearly interested in the possible test their models may provide for human language theories. however, they only superficially address the assumptions underlying their own agent architecture, while these are of crucial relevance to the topic of human language. these assumptions fit an augustinian picture of language, which wittgenstein challenges in his philosophical investigations. it is too early to draw conclusions regarding human language evolution from such models.

Seasonal changes in the diet composition and trophic niche overlap were examined for the dominant members of the fish assemblage of the turbid low-salinity zone of the Scheldt estuary (Belgium). Samples of fish were taken in the cooling water of a power plant. Juveniles of eight species dominated the fish assemblage: two goby species, herring, sprat, bass, flounder, eel and pikeperch. Together, they had preyed upon 31 different prey taxa. Calanoid copepods and hyperbenthic mysids were the most important prey items with macrobenthic invertebrates being largely ignored. Pair-wise comparisons of trophic niche overlap showed that, in general, niche overlap between individuals of the same species was significantly higher than overlap between individuals from different species, suggesting that the available food resources were partitioned. The total annual prey consumption by the dominant fish species was estimated at 610 mg ash-free dry weight m−3.

The reoccurrence of water molecules in crystal structures of RNase T1 was investigated. Five waters were found to be invariant in RNase T1 as well as in six other related fungal RNases. The structural, dynamical, and functional characteristics of one of these conserved hydration sites (WAT1) were analyzed by protein engineering, X-ray crystallography, and 17O and 2H nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD). The position of WAT1 and its surrounding hydrogen bond network are unaffected by deletions of two neighboring side chains. In the mutant Thr93Gln, the Gln93Nε2 nitrogen replaces WAT1 and participates in a similar hydrogen bond network involving Cys6, Asn9, Asp76, and Thr91. The ability of WAT1 to form four hydrogen bonds may explain why evolution has preserved a water molecule, rather than a side-chain atom, at the center of this intricate hydrogen bond network. Comparison of the 17O NMRD profiles from wild-type and Thr93Gln RNase T1 yield a mean residence time of 7 ns at 27 °C and an orientational order parameter of 0.45. The effects of mutations around WAT1 on the kinetic parameters of RNase T1 are small but significant and probably relate to the dynamics of the active site.

Micro Raman spectroscopy (RS) is used to study the crystalline quality and the stresses in the thin superficial silicon layer of Silicon-On-Insulator (SO) materials. Results are presented for SIMOX (Separation by IMplanted OXygen) and ZMR (Zone Melt Recrystallized) substrates. Both as implanted and annealed SIMOX structures are investigated. The results from the as implanted structures are correlated with spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and cross-section transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses on the same material. Residual stress in ZMR substrates is studied in low- and high temperature gradient regions.
