This study investigates the influence of suspended kelp farms on ocean mixed layer hydrodynamics in the presence of currents and waves. We use the large eddy simulation method, where the wave effect is incorporated by solving the wave-averaged equations. Distinct Langmuir circulation patterns are generated within various suspended farm configurations, including horizontally uniform kelp blocks and spaced kelp rows. Intensified turbulence arises from the farm-generated Langmuir circulation, as opposed to the standard Langmuir turbulence observed without a farm. The creation of Langmuir circulation within the farm is attributed to two primary factors depending on farm configuration: (i) enhanced vertical shear due to kelp frond area density variability, and (ii) enhanced lateral shear due to canopy discontinuity at lateral edges of spaced rows. Both enhanced vertical and lateral shear of streamwise velocity, representing the lateral and vertical vorticity components, respectively, can be tilted into downstream vorticity to create Langmuir circulation. This vorticity tilting is driven by the Craik–Leibovich vortex force associated with the Stokes drift of surface gravity waves. In addition to the farm-generated Langmuir turbulence, canopy shear layer turbulence is created at the farm bottom edge due to drag discontinuity. The intensity of different types of turbulence depends on both kelp frond area density and the geometric configuration of the farm. The farm-generated turbulence has substantial consequences for nutrient supply and kelp growth. These findings also underscore the significance of the presence of obstacle structures in modifying ocean mixed layer characteristics.

A multiscale asymptotic theory is formulated for surface gravity waves and currents in finite-depth water with a vegetation canopy that provides a drag force on both flows with known drag coefficients. It assumes that the density is uniform and the depth is uniform pro tem and that the wave frequency is fast compared to the current advective rate. It is a quasi-linear theory in which the wave dynamics is independent of current and drag to leading order but provides perturbative corrections, and in which wave nonlinear interactions are neglected while quadratic wave-averaged wave fluxes and quadratic wave-drag effects are retained. The primary surface wave is modified by drag and current interactions, and the wave-averaged current momentum balance includes a wave-augmented drag force and several vortex forces due to Earth's rotation, current vorticity, Stokes drift and drag-induced wave vorticity. The wave-averaged current equations derived here are a suitable basis for future large-eddy simulation and submesoscale circulation computational models.

In this study, we focus on Langmuir turbulence in the deep ocean with the presence of a large macroalgal farm using a large eddy simulation method. The wave–current interactions are modelled by solving the wave-averaged equations. The hydrodynamic process over the farm is found to drive a persistent flow pattern similar to Langmuir circulations but is locked in space across the farm. These secondary circulations are generated because the cross-stream shear produced by the rows of canopy elements leads to a steady vertical vorticity field, which is then rotated to the downstream direction under the effect of vortex force. Since the driving mechanism is similar to the Craik–Leibovich type 2 instability theory, these secondary circulations are also termed as attached Langmuir circulations. We then apply a triple decomposition on the flow field to unveil the underlying kinematics and energy transfer between the mean flow, the secondary flow resulting from the farm drag and the transient eddies. Flow visualizations and statistics suggest that the attached Langmuir circulations result from the adjustment of the upper ocean mixed layer to the macroalgal farm, and they will weaken (if not disappear) when the flow reaches an equilibrium state within the farm. The triple-decomposed energy budgets reveal that the energy of the secondary flow is transferred from the mean flow under the action of canopy drag, while the transient eddies feed on wave energy transferred by the Stokes drift and energy conversion from the secondary flow.

Ocean fronts are an important submesoscale feature, yet frontogenesis theory often neglects turbulence – even parameterized turbulence – leaving theory lacking in comparison with observations and models. A perturbation analysis is used to include the effects of eddy viscosity and diffusivity as a first-order correction to existing strain-induced inviscid, adiabatic frontogenesis theory. A modified solution is obtained by using potential vorticity and surface conditions to quantify turbulent fluxes. It is found that horizontal viscosity and diffusivity tend to be readily frontolytic – reducing frontal tendency to negative values under weakly non-conservative perturbations and opposing or reversing front sharpening, whereas vertical viscosity and diffusivity tend to only weaken frontogenesis by slowing the rate of sharpening of the front even under strong perturbations. During late frontogenesis, vertical diffusivity enhances the rate of frontogenesis, although perturbation theory may be inaccurate at this stage. Surface quasi-geostrophic theory – neglecting all injected interior potential vorticity – is able to describe the first-order correction to the along-front velocity and ageostrophic overturning circulation in most cases. Furthermore, local conditions near the front maximum are sufficient to reconstruct the modified solution of both these fields.

Submesoscale currents, small-scale turbulence and surface gravity waves co-exist in the upper ocean and interact in complex ways. To expose the couplings, the frontogenetic life cycle of an idealized cold dense submesoscale filament interacting with upper ocean Langmuir turbulence is investigated in large-eddy simulations (LESs) based on the incompressible wave-averaged equations. The simulations utilize large domains and fine meshes with $6.4\times 10^{9}$ grid points. Case studies are made with surface winds or surface cooling with waves oriented in across-filament (perpendicular) or down-filament (parallel) directions relative to the two-dimensional filament axis. The currents $u$, $v$ and $w$ are aligned with the across-filament, down-filament and vertical directions, respectively. Frontogenesis is induced by across-filament Lagrangian secondary circulations in the boundary layer, and it is shown to be strongly impacted by surface waves, in particular the propagation direction relative to the filament axis. In a horizontally heterogeneous boundary layer, surface waves induce both mean and fluctuating Stokes-drift vortex forces that modify a linear, hydrostatic turbulent thermal wind (TTW) approximation for momentum. Down-filament winds and waves are found to be especially impactful, they significantly reduce the peak level of frontogenesis by fragmenting the filament into primary and secondary down-welling sites in a broad frontal zone over a width ${\sim}500~\text{m}$. At peak frontogenesis, opposing down-filament jets $\langle v\rangle$ overlie each other resulting in a vigorous vertical shear layer $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}_{z}\langle v\rangle$ with large vertical momentum flux $\langle v^{\prime }w^{\prime }\rangle$. Filament arrest is induced by a lateral shear instability that generates horizontal momentum flux $\langle u^{\prime }v^{\prime }\rangle$ at low wavenumbers. The turbulent vertical velocity patterns, indicative of coherent Langmuir cells, change markedly across the horizontal domain with both across-filament and down-filament winds under the action of submesoscale currents.

Coherent vortices with horizontal swirl arise spontaneously in the wave-driven nearshore surf zone. Here, a demonstration is made of the much greater robustness of coherent barotropic dipole vortices on a sloping beach in a 2D shallow-water model compared with fully 3D models either without or with stable density stratification. The explanation is that active vortex tilting and stretching or instability in 3D disrupt an initially barotropic dipole vortex. Without stratification in 3D, the vorticity retains a dipole envelope structure but is internally fragmented. With stratification in 3D, the disrupted vortex reforms as a coherent but weaker surface-intensified baroclinic dipole vortex. An implication is that barotropic or depth-integrated dynamical models of the wave-driven surf zone misrepresent an important aspect of surf-eddy behaviour.

A diagnostic analysis is made for the ageostrophic secondary circulation, buoyancy flux and frontogenetic tendency (SCFT) in upper-ocean submesoscale fronts and dense filaments under the combined influences of boundary-layer turbulent mixing, surface wind stress and surface gravity waves. The analysis is based on a momentum-balance approximation that neglects ageostrophic acceleration, and the surface wave effects are represented with a wave-averaged asymptotic theory based on the time scale separation between wave and current evolution. The wave’s Stokes-drift velocity $\boldsymbol{u}_{st}$ induces SCFT effects that are dominant in strong swell with weak turbulent mixing, and they combine with Ekman and turbulent thermal wind influences in more general situations near wind–wave equilibrium. The complementary effect of the submesoscale currents on the waves is weak for longer waves near the wind–wave or swell spectrum peak, but it is strong for shorter waves.

The evolution of upper ocean currents involves a set of complex, poorly understood interactions between submesoscale turbulence (e.g. density fronts and filaments and coherent vortices) and smaller-scale boundary-layer turbulence. Here we simulate the lifecycle of a cold (dense) filament undergoing frontogenesis in the presence of turbulence generated by surface stress and/or buoyancy loss. This phenomenon is examined in large-eddy simulations with resolved turbulent motions in large horizontal domains using ${\sim}10^{10}$ grid points. Steady winds are oriented in directions perpendicular or parallel to the filament axis. Due to turbulent vertical momentum mixing, cold filaments generate a potent two-celled secondary circulation in the cross-filament plane that is frontogenetic, sharpens the cross-filament buoyancy and horizontal velocity gradients and blocks Ekman buoyancy flux across the cold filament core towards the warm filament edge. Within less than a day, the frontogenesis is arrested at a small width, ${\approx}100~\text{m}$, primarily by an enhancement of the turbulence through a small submesoscale, horizontal shear instability of the sharpened filament, followed by a subsequent slow decay of the filament by further turbulent mixing. The boundary-layer turbulence is inhomogeneous and non-stationary in relation to the evolving submesoscale currents and density stratification. The occurrence of frontogenesis and arrest are qualitatively similar with varying stress direction or with convective cooling, but the detailed evolution and flow structure differ among the cases. Thus submesoscale filament frontogenesis caused by boundary-layer turbulence, frontal arrest by frontal instability and frontal decay by forward energy cascade, and turbulent mixing are generic processes in the upper ocean.

Problems are posed and solved for upper-ocean submesoscale density fronts and filaments in the presence of surface wind stress and the associated boundary-layer turbulent mixing, their associated geostrophic and secondary circulations and their instantaneous buoyancy fluxes and frontogenetic evolutionary tendencies in both velocity and buoyancy gradients. The analysis is diagnostic rather than prognostic, and it is based on a momentum-balanced approximation that assumes the ageostrophic acceleration is negligible, although the Rossby number is finite and ageostrophic advection is included, justified by the quasi-steady, coherent-structure flow configurations of fronts and filaments. Across a wide range of wind and buoyancy-gradient parameters, the ageostrophic secondary circulation for a front is a single overturning cell with downwelling on the dense side, hence with a positive (restratifying) vertical buoyancy flux. For a dense filament the circulation is a double cell with central downwelling and again positive vertical buoyancy flux. The primary explanation for these secondary-circulation cells is a ‘turbulent thermal wind’ linear momentum balance. These circulation patterns, and their associated frontogenetic tendencies in both the velocity and buoyancy gradients, are qualitatively similar to those due to the ‘classical’ mechanism of strain-induced frontogenesis. For linear solutions, the secondary circulation and frontogenesis are essentially independent of wind direction, but in nonlinear solutions ageostrophic advection provides a strong intensification of the peak vertical velocity, while generally preserving the ageostrophic circulation pattern, when the Rossby number is order one and the wind orientation relative to the frontal axis is favourable. At large Rossby number the solution procedure fails to converge, with an implication of a failure of existence of wholly balanced circulations.

Observations and models of deep ocean boundary currents show that they exhibit complex variability, instabilities and eddy shedding, particularly over continental slopes that curve horizontally, for example around coastal peninsulas. In this article the authors investigate the source of this variability by characterizing the properties of baroclinic instability in mean flows over horizontally curved bottom slopes. The classical two-layer quasi-geostrophic solution for linear baroclinic instability over sloping bottom topography is extended to the case of azimuthal mean flow in an annular channel. To facilitate comparison with the classical straight channel instability problem of uniform mean flow, the authors focus on comparatively simple flows in an annulus, namely uniform azimuthal velocity and solid-body rotation. Baroclinic instability in solid-body rotation flow is analytically analogous to the instability in uniform straight channel flow due to several identical properties of the mean flow, including vanishing strain rate and vorticity gradient. The instability of uniform azimuthal flow is numerically similar to straight channel flow instability as long as the mean barotropic azimuthal velocity is zero. Non-zero barotropic flow generally suppresses the instability via horizontal curvature-induced strain and Reynolds stress work. An exception occurs when the ratio of the bathymetric to isopycnal slopes is close to (positive) one, as is often observed in the ocean, in which case the instability is enhanced. A non-vanishing mean barotropic flow component also results in a larger number of growing eigenmodes and in increased non-normal growth. The implications of these findings for variability in deep western boundary currents are discussed.

The linear instability of several rotating, stably stratified, interior vertical shear flows $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\overline{U}(z)$ is calculated in Boussinesq equations. Two types of baroclinic, ageostrophic instability, AI1 and AI2, are found in odd-symmetric $\overline{U}(z)$ for intermediate Rossby number ($\mathit{Ro}$). AI1 has zero frequency; it appears in a continuous transformation of the unstable mode properties between classic baroclinic instability (BCI) and centrifugal instability (CI). It begins to occur at intermediate $\mathit{Ro}$ values and horizontal wavenumbers ($k,l$) that are far from $l= 0$ or $k = 0$, where the growth rate of BCI or CI is the strongest. AI1 grows by drawing kinetic energy from the mean flow, and the perturbation converts kinetic energy to potential energy. The instability AI2 has inertia critical layers (ICL); hence it is associated with inertia-gravity waves. For an unstable AI2 mode, the coupling is either between an interior balanced shear wave and an inertia-gravity wave (BG), or between two inertia-gravity waves (GG). The main energy source for an unstable BG mode is the mean kinetic energy, while the main energy source for an unstable GG mode is the mean available potential energy. AI1 and BG type AI2 occur in the neighbourhood of $A-S= 0$ (a sign change in the difference between absolute vertical vorticity and horizontal strain rate in isentropic coordinates; see McWilliams et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 10, 1998, pp. 3178–3184), while GG type AI2 arises beyond this condition. Both AI1 and AI2 are unbalanced instabilities; they serve as an initiation of a possible local route for the loss of balance in 3D interior flows, leading to an efficient energy transfer to small scales.

A geostrophic, hydrostatic, frontal or filamentary flow adjusts conservatively to accommodate a surface gravity wave field with wave-averaged, Stokes-drift vortex and Coriolis forces in an altered balanced state. In this altered state, the wave-balanced perturbations have an opposite cross-front symmetry to the original geostrophic state; e.g. the along-front flow perturbation is odd-symmetric about the frontal centre while the geostrophic flow is even-symmetric. The adjustment tends to make the flow scale closer to the deformation radius, and it induces a cross-front shape displacement in the opposite direction to the overturning effects of wave-aligned down-front and up-front winds. The ageostrophic, non-hydrostatic, adjusted flow may differ from the initial flow substantially, with velocity and buoyancy perturbations that extend over a larger and deeper region than the initial front and Stokes drift. The largest effect occurs for fronts that are wider than the mixed layer deformation radius and that fill about two-thirds of a well-mixed surface layer, with the Stokes drift spanning only the shallowest part of the mixed layer. For even deeper mixed layers, and especially for thinner or absent mixed layers, the wave-balanced adjustments are not as large.

Linear instabilities, both momentum-balanced and unbalanced, in several different $ \overline{u} (y)$ shear profiles are investigated in the rotating shallow water equations. The unbalanced instabilities are strongly ageostrophic and involve inertia–gravity wave motions, occurring only for finite Rossby ($\mathit{Ro}$) and Froude ($\mathit{Fr}$) numbers. They serve as a possible route for the breakdown of balance in a rotating shallow water system, which leads the energy to cascade towards small scales. Unlike previous work, this paper focuses on general shear flows with non-uniform potential vorticity, and without side or equatorial boundaries or vanishing layer depth (frontal outcropping). As well as classical shear instability among balanced shear wave modes (i.e. B–B type), two types of ageostrophic instability (B–G and G–G) are found. The B–G instability has attributes of both a balanced shear wave mode and an inertia–gravity wave mode. The G–G instability occurs as a sharp resonance between two inertia–gravity wave modes. The criterion for the occurrence of the ageostrophic instability is associated with the second stability condition of Ripa (1983), which requires a sufficiently large local Froude number. When $\mathit{Ro}$ and especially $\mathit{Fr}$ increase, the balanced instability is suppressed, while the ageostrophic instabilities are enhanced. The profile of the mean flow also affects the strength of the balanced and ageostrophic instabilities.

A quasi-linear theory is presented for how randomly forced, barotropic velocity fluctuations cause an exponentially growing, large-scale (mean) magnetic dynamo in the presence of a uniform parallel shear flow. It is a ‘kinematic’ theory for the growth of the mean magnetic energy from a small initial seed, neglecting the saturation effects of the Lorentz force. The quasi-linear approximation is most broadly justifiable by its correspondence with computational solutions of nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics, and it is rigorously derived in the limit of small magnetic Reynolds number, . Dynamo action occurs even without mean helicity in the forcing or flow, but random helicity variance is then essential. In a sufficiently large domain and with a small seed wavenumber in the direction perpendicular to the mean shearing plane, a positive exponential growth rate can occur for arbitrary values of , viscous Reynolds number , and random-force correlation time and orientation angle in the shearing plane. The value of is independent of the domain size. The shear dynamo is ‘fast’, with finite in the limit of . Averaged over random realizations of the forcing history, the ensemble-mean magnetic field grows more slowly, if at all, compared to the r.m.s. field (magnetic energy). In the limit of small and , the dynamo behaviour is related to the well-known alpha–omega ansatz when the force is slowly varying () and to the ‘incoherent’ alpha–omega ansatz when the force is more rapidly fluctuating.

The oceanic general circulation is forced at large scales and is unstable to mesoscale eddies. Large-scale currents and eddy flows are approximately in geostrophic balance. Geostrophic dynamics is characterized by an inverse energy cascade except for dissipation near the boundaries. In this paper, we confront the dilemma of how the general circulation may achieve dynamical equilibrium in the presence of continuous large-scale forcing and the absence of boundary dissipation. We do this with a forced horizontal flow with spatially uniform rotation, vertical stratification and vertical shear in a horizontally periodic domain, i.e. a version of Eady's flow carried to turbulent equilibrium. A direct route to interior dissipation is presented that is essentially non-geostrophic in its dynamics, with significant submesoscale frontogenesis, frontal instability and breakdown, and forward kinetic energy cascade to dissipation. To support this conclusion, a series of simulations is made with both quasigeostrophic and Boussinesq models. The quasigeostrophic model is shown as increasingly inefficient in achieving equilibration through viscous dissipation at increasingly higher numerical resolution (hence Reynolds number), whereas the non-geostrophic Boussinesq model equilibrates with only weak dependence on resolution and Rossby number.

Turbulent solutions of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations are a paradigm for the chaotic space–time patterns and equilibrium distributions of turbulent geophysical and astrophysical ‘thin’ flows on large horizontal scales. Here we investigate how homogeneous, stationary two-dimensional turbulence varies with the Reynolds number (Re) in stationary solutions with large-scale, random forcing and viscous diffusion, also including hypoviscous diffusion to limit the inverse energy cascade. This survey is made over the computationally feasible range in Re ≫ 1, approximately between 1.5 × 103 and 5.6 × 106. For increasing Re, we witness the emergence of vorticity fine structure within the filaments and vortex cores. The energy spectrum shape approaches the forward-enstrophy inertial-range form k−3 at large Re, and the velocity structure function is independent of Re. All other statistical measures investigated in this study exhibit power-law scaling with Re, including energy, enstrophy, dissipation rates and the vorticity structure function. The scaling exponents depend on the forcing properties through their influences on large-scale coherent structures, whose particular distributions are non-universal. A striking result is the Re independence of the intermittency measures of the flow, in contrast with the known behaviour for three-dimensional homogeneous turbulence of asymptotically increasing intermittency. This is a consequence of the control of the tails of the distribution functions by large-scale coherent vortices. Our analysis allows extrapolation towards the asymptotic limit of Re → ∞, fundamental to geophysical and astrophysical regimes and their large-scale simulation models where turbulent transport and dissipation must be parameterized.

Gravitational available potential energy is a central concept in an energy analysis of flows in which buoyancy effects are dynamically important. These include, but are not limited to, most geophysical flows with persistently stable density stratification. The volume-integrated available potential energy ap is defined as the difference between the gravitational potential energy of the system and the potential energy of a reference state with the lowest potential energy that can be reached by adiabatic material rearrangement; ap determines how much energy is available for conservative dynamical exchange with kinetic energy k. In this paper we introduce new techniques for computing the local available potential energy density Eap in numerical simulations that allow for a more accurate and complete analysis of the available potential energy and its dynamical balances as part of the complete energy cycle of a flow. In particular, the definition of Eap and an associated gravitation disturbance field permit us to make a spectral decomposition of its dynamical balance and examine the cross-scale energy flux. Several examples illustrate the spatial structure of Eap and its evolutionary influences. The greatest attention is given to an analysis of a turbulent-equilibrium simulation Eady-like vertical-shear flow with rotation and stable stratification. In this regime Eap exhibits a vigorous forward energy cascade from the mesoscale through the submesoscale range – first in a scale range dominated by frontogenesis and positive buoyancy-flux conversion from ap to k and then, after strong frontal instability and frontogenetic arrest, in a coupled kinetic-potential energy inertial-cascade range with negative buoyancy-flux conversion – en route to fine-scale dissipation of both energy components.

The relevance of surface quasi-geostrophic dynamics (SQG) to the upper ocean and the atmospheric tropopause has been recently demonstrated in a wide range of conditions. Within this context, the properties of SQG in terms of kinetic energy (KE) transfers at the surface are revisited and further explored. Two well-known and important properties of SQG characterize the surface dynamics: (i) the identity between surface velocity and density spectra (when appropriately scaled) and (ii) the existence of a forward cascade for surface density variance. Here we show numerically and analytically that (i) and (ii) do not imply a forward cascade of surface KE (through the advection term in the KE budget). On the contrary, advection by the geostrophic flow primarily induces an inverse cascade of surface KE on a large range of scales. This spectral flux is locally compensated by a KE source that is related to surface frontogenesis. The subsequent spectral budget resembles those exhibited by more complex systems (primitive equations or Boussinesq models) and observations, which strengthens the relevance of SQG for the description of ocean/atmosphere dynamics near vertical boundaries. The main weakness of SQG however is in the small-scale range (scales smaller than 20–30 km in the ocean) where it poorly represents the forward KE cascade observed in non-QG numerical simulations.

The wind-driven stably stratified mid-latitude oceanic surface turbulent boundary layer is computationally simulated in the presence of a specified surface gravity-wave field. The gravity waves have broad wavenumber and frequency spectra typical of measured conditions in near-equilibrium with the mean wind speed. The simulation model is based on (i) an asymptotic theory for the conservative dynamical effects of waves on the wave-averaged boundary-layer currents and (ii) a boundary-layer forcing by a stochastic representation of the impulses and energy fluxes in a field of breaking waves. The wave influences are shown to be profound on both the mean current profile and turbulent statistics compared to a simulation without these wave influences and forced by an equivalent mean surface stress. As expected from previous studies with partial combinations of these wave influences, Langmuir circulations due to the wave-averaged vortex force make vertical eddy fluxes of momentum and material concentration much more efficient and non-local (i.e. with negative eddy viscosity near the surface), and they combine with the breakers to increase the turbulent energy and dissipation rate. They also combine in an unexpected positive feedback in which breaker-generated vorticity seeds the creation of a new Langmuir circulation and instigates a deep strong intermittent downwelling jet that penetrates through the boundary layer and increases the material entrainment rate at the base of the layer. These wave effects on the boundary layer are greater for smaller wave ages and higher mean wind speeds.
