This study examines the pursuit-evasion game involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with a specific focus on the scenario of N-pursuers-one-escapee. The primary objective is to develop an optimal strategy for the escapee when the pursuers possess superior capabilities. To obtain this objective, we conduct the following study. Firstly, to enhance realism, a non-cooperative differential game model is formulated, incorporating multiple motion characteristics, including aerodynamics, overloading, and imposed constraints. Secondly, the end-value performance index is subsequently converted to an integral one, simplifying the solution process of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. An iterative method is utilised to determine the covariates using the Cauchy initial value problem, and its convergence and uniqueness are established. The optimal avoidance strategy is subsequently derived from the covariates. Finally, the superiority of the proposed strategy is validated through simulation experiments and compared to three advanced optimal avoidance strategies. A total of 1,000 anti-jamming simulation experiments are conducted to verify the robustness of the proposed strategy.

Background: External comparisons of antimicrobial use (AU) may be more informative if adjusted for encounter characteristics. Optimal methods to define input variables for encounter-level risk-adjustment models of AU are not established. Methods: This retrospective analysis of electronic health record data included 50 US hospitals in 2020-2021. We used NHSN definitions for all antibacterials days of therapy (DOT), including adult and pediatric encounters with at least 1 day present in inpatient locations. We assessed 4 methods to define input variables: 1) diagnosis-related group (DRG) categories by Yu et al., 2) adjudicated Elixhauser comorbidity categories by Goodman et al., 3) all Clinical Classification Software Refined (CCSR) diagnosis and procedure categories, and 4) adjudicated CCSR categories where codes not appropriate for AU risk-adjustment were excluded by expert consensus, requiring review of 867 codes over 4 months to attain consensus. Data were split randomly, stratified by bed size as follows: 1) training dataset including two-thirds of encounters among two-thirds of hospitals; 2) internal testing set including one-third of encounters within training hospitals, and 3) external testing set including the remaining one-third of hospitals. We used a gradient-boosted machine (GBM) tree-based model and two-staged approach to first identify encounters with zero DOT, then estimate DOT among those with >0.5 probability of receiving antibiotics. Accuracy was assessed using mean absolute error (MAE) in testing datasets. Correlation plots compared model estimates and observed DOT among testing datasets. The top 20 most influential variables were defined using modeled variable importance. Results: Our datasets included 629,445 training, 314,971 internal testing, and 419,109 external testing encounters. Demographic data included 41% male, 59% non-Hispanic White, 25% non-Hispanic Black, 9% Hispanic, and 5% pediatric encounters. DRG was missing in 29% of encounters. MAE was lower in pediatrics as compared to adults, and lowest for models incorporating CCSR inputs (Figure 1). Performance in internal and external testing was similar, though Goodman/Elixhauser variable strategies were less accurate in external testing and underestimated long DOT outliers (Figure 2). Agnostic and adjudicated CCSR model estimates were highly correlated; their influential variables lists were similar (Figure 3). Conclusion: Larger numbers of CCSR diagnosis and procedure inputs improved risk-adjustment model accuracy compared with prior strategies. Variable importance and accuracy were similar for agnostic and adjudicated approaches. However, maintaining adjudications by experts would require significant time and potentially introduce personal bias. If findings are confirmed, the need for expert adjudication of input variables should be reconsidered.

In order to gain a better understanding of clay and Fe (oxyhydr)oxide minerals formed during pedogenesis of basalts in tropical monsoonal Hainan (southern China), a basalt-derived lateritic soil at Nanyang, Hainan, was investigated comprehensively. The results show that the lateritic regolith consists uniformly of kaolinite and Fe (oxyhydr)oxide minerals, with trace gibbsite only in the AE horizon. Abundant dioctahedral smectite in the basalt bedrock formed due to primary hydrothermal alteration, and transformed to kaolinite rapidly in the highly weathering saprolite horizon. The ‘crystallinity’ of kaolinite is notably low and its Hinckley index fluctuates along the soil profile, resulting from intense ferrolysis due to fluctuations between wet/dry climate conditions. From the base to the top of the profile, maghemite shows a decreasing trend, whereas magnetite, hematite, and goethite exhibit a slightly increasing trend, indicating that maghemite formed as an initial product of basalt weathering. Formation of Fe (oxyhydr)oxide species in basalt-derived soil is mainly controlled by local environmental conditions such as soil moisture, redox, and acidic conditions; thus, iron mineral-based paleoclimatic proxies could not be used for subtropical to tropical soils. The highly weathered saprolite has a similar δ56Fe value (+0.06‰) to that (+0.07‰) of the parent rock, while the AE to middle E horizons have greater δ56Fe values of +0.12‰ to +0.19‰. Fe isotopic signatures correlate positively with the Fe mass transfer coefficient (R2=0.77, n=6, ρ<0.05), indicating repetitive weathering and relative accumulation of isotopically heavier Fe in the upper soil horizons, which occurred by reductive dissolution of organic matter under oxic conditions, as reflected by the greater U/Th.

Background: We evaluated vorasidenib (VOR), a dual inhibitor of mIDH1/2, in patients with mIDH1/2 glioma (Phase 3; NCT04164901). Methods: Patients with residual/recurrent grade 2 mIDH1/2 oligodendroglioma or astrocytoma were enrolled (age ≥12; Karnofsky Performance Score ≥80; measurable non-enhancing disease; surgery as only prior treatment; not in immediate need of chemoradiotherapy). Patients were stratified by 1p19q status and baseline tumor size and randomized 1:1 to VOR 40 mg or placebo (PBO) daily in 28-day cycles. Endpoints included imaging-based progression-free survival (PFS), time to next intervention (TTNI), tumor growth rate (TGR), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), neurocognition and seizure activity. Results: 331 patients were randomized (VOR, 168; PBO, 163). The median age was 40.0 years. 172 and 159 patients had histologically confirmed oligodendroglioma and astrocytoma, respectively. Treatment with VOR significantly improved PFS and TTNI. Median PFS: VOR, 27.7 mos; PBO, 11.1 mos (P=0.000000067). Median TTNI: VOR, not reached; PBO, 17.8 mos (P=0.000000019). Treatment with VOR resulted in shrinkage of tumor volume. Post-treatment TGR: VOR, -2.5% (95% CI: -4.7, -0.2); PBO, 13.9% (95% CI: 11.1, 16.8). HRQoL and neurocognition were preserved and seizure control was maintained. VOR had a manageable safety profile. Conclusions: VOR was effective in mIDH1/2 diffuse glioma not in immediate need of chemoradiotherapy.

Background: A key efficacy indicator in generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) treatment is improvement in MG-ADL score. Minimal symptom expression (MSE, MG-ADL total score of 0 or 1) is explored as a novel proposed treatment target in gMG in the phase 3 study of intravenous efgartigimod, ADAPT, and its open-label extension, ADAPT+. Methods: Post hoc analyses of acetylcholine receptor antibody positive participants in ADAPT (n=129) and ADAPT+ (n=111) were performed. Results: In ADAPT, 44.6% receiving efgartigimod achieved MSE vs 10.9% of participants given placebo. Despite less frequent assessment during ADAPT+, 40.5% of participants achieved MSE. Eighty-one percent of participants treated with efgartigimod who achieved MSE in ADAPT also achieved MSE during ADAPT+; 23% who had not achieved MSE in ADAPT did in ADAPT+. Achieving MSE was associated with substantial improvements in QMG, MGC, MG-QoL15r, and EQ-5D-5L mean scores of 11.4, 16.0, 12.4, and 0.3 points, respectively, from baseline to best score (across all visits). These drastic improvements resulted in quality of life (QoL) comparable to that of healthy populations. MSE achievement also resulted in sustained improvements in these disease-specific and QoL measures. Conclusions: Participants who achieved MSE showed substantial and consistent improvements across multiple disease measures and experienced QoL comparable to that of healthy populations.

With the in-depth study of thin-film structures, nonuniform thin films with rigid elements have been applied in the aerospace and flexible electronics industries. For thin-film structures with rigid elements, there is an interaction force between the rigid element and the thin film; therefore, the wrinkling mode of the thin film changes under the influence of the interaction force. In this study, a wrinkle model was developed to predict the wrinkle morphology of thin-film structures with rigid elements on the diagonal. First, the wrinkle patterns of the rigid elements were observed at different positions using tensile experiments. Then, the relationship between the tilt of the rigid element and the wrinkle wavelength was investigated using a finite-element eigenvalue buckling analysis. Finally, local wrinkling caused by the perturbed stress of the rigid element was introduced, and a wrinkling model of a square thin film with rigid elements on the diagonal under tension was established. The theoretical analysis results were compared with simulation and experimental results, demonstrating that the model can accurately describe the wrinkle patterns of thin-film structures containing rigid elements on the diagonal under tension.

Genes involved in melanin production directly impact insect pigmentation and can affect diverse physiology and behaviours. The role these genes have on sex behaviour, however, is unclear. In the present study, the crucial melanin pigment gene black was functionally characterised in an urban pest, the German cockroach, Blattella germanica. RNAi knockdown of B. germanica black (Bgblack) had no effect on survival, but did result in black pigmentation of the thoraxes, abdomens, heads, wings, legs, antennae, and cerci due to cuticular accumulation of melanin. Sex-specific variation in the pigmentation pattern was apparent, with females exhibiting darker coloration on the abdomen and thorax than males. Bgblack knockdown also resulted in wing deformation and negatively impacted the contact sex pheromone-based courtship behaviour of males. This study provides evidence for black function in multiple aspects of B. germanica biology and opens new avenues of exploration for novel pest control strategies.

As an important component of prehistoric subsistence, an understanding of bone-working is essential for interpreting the evolution of early complex societies, yet worked bones are rarely systematically collected in China. Here, the authors apply multiple analytical methods to worked bones from the Longshan site of Pingliangtai, in central China, showing that Neolithic bone-working in this area, with cervid as the main raw material, was mature but localised, household-based and self-sufficient. The introduction of cattle in the Late Neolithic precipitated a shift in bone-working traditions but it was only later, in the Bronze Age, that cattle bones were utilised in a specialised fashion and dedicated bone-working industries emerged in urban centres.

An experimental investigation identifying the effects of surface roughness on the drag coefficient ($C_{D}$) of freely rolling spheres is reported. Although lubrication theory predicts an infinite drag force for an ideally smooth sphere in contact with a smooth wall, finite drag coefficients are obtained in experiments. It is proposed that surface roughness provides a finite effective gap ($G$) between the sphere and panel, resulting in a finite drag force while also allowing physical contact between the sphere and plane. The measured surface roughnesses of both the sphere and panel are combined to give a total relative roughness ($\xi$). The measured $C_{D}$ increases with decreasing $\xi$, in agreement with analytical predictions. Furthermore, the measured $C_{D}$ is also in good agreement with the combined analytical and numerical predictions for a smooth sphere and wall, with a gap approximately equal to the root-mean-square roughness ($R_q$). The accuracy of these predictions decreases for low mean Reynolds numbers ($\overline {Re}$), due to the existence of multiple scales of surface roughness that are not effectively captured by $R_{q}$. Experimental flow visualisations have been used to identify critical flow transitions that have been previously predicted numerically. Path tracking of spheres rolling on two panels with different surface roughnesses indicates that surface roughness does not significantly affect the sphere path or oscillations. Analysis of sphere Strouhal number ($St$) highlights that wake shedding and sphere oscillations are coupled at low $\overline {Re}$ but with increasing $\overline {Re}$, the influence of wake shedding on the sphere path diminishes.

Transient electromagnetic field plays very important roles in the evolution of high-energy-density matter or laser plasma. Now, a new design is proposed in this paper to diagnose the transient magnetic field, using relativistic electron bunch as a probe based on high-energy electron radiography. And based on this scheme, the continuous distribution of magnetic strength field can be snapshotted. For 1 mm thick quadrupole magnet model measured by 50 MeV probe electron beams, the simulation result indicates that this diagnosis has spatial resolution better than 4 microns and high measurement accuracy for strong magnetic strength and high magnetic gradient field no matter whether the magnetic interaction is focusing or defocusing for the range from -510 T∗ μm to 510 T∗ μm.

We interpret the Taylor–Green cellular vortex model in terms of the Kolmogorov length and velocity scales, in order to study the balance between aggregation and breakup of cohesive sediment in fine-scale turbulence. One-way coupled numerical simulations, which capture the effects of cohesive, lubrication and direct contact forces on the flocculation process, reproduce the non-monotonic relationship between the equilibrium floc size and shear rate observed in previous experiments. The one-way coupled results are confirmed by select two-way coupled simulations. Intermediate shear gives rise to the largest flocs, as it promotes preferential concentration of the primary particles without generating sufficiently strong turbulent stresses to break up the emerging aggregates. We find that the optimal intermediate shear rate increases for stronger cohesion and smaller particle-to-fluid density ratios, and we propose a simple model for the equilibrium floc size that agrees well with experimental data reported in the literature.

A comprehensive investigation, using experimental, computational and analytic methods, is reported on the motion of, and the forces on, spheres of different density ratios rolling freely down an incline in a fluid under gravity. The Reynolds number, based on sphere diameter and terminal velocity, ranged up to 1000 for the experiments, and up to 250 for the computer simulations. A modified Reynolds number, incorporating the density ratio, gravitational acceleration and angle of incline, was found to govern the saturated state of the flow. Transition from steady to unsteady flow was sensitive to mass ratio, with lighter spheres undergoing earlier transition. Indeed, positively buoyant spheres develop cross-slope oscillations prior to the onset of shedding. Also of interest, the transition to chaotic wake flow occurs at Reynolds numbers lower than for a sphere forced to roll at a constant speed. In addition to the average sphere motion, flow-induced vibrations were predicted and measured, with quasi-periodic lateral oscillations found to increase as the flow became more unstable, and to decrease with increased density ratio. The study confirms the time-averaged results of a previous experimental study, although closer inspection shows sensitivity to the relative surface roughness of the sphere and plane in experiments; this sensitivity is masked in typical log–log plots of drag against Reynolds number. Physical surface roughness appears to play a role analogous to the necessary imposed gap between the sphere and plane in computations, removing the singularity in drag that would prevent rolling for an incompressible fluid and perfectly smooth surfaces.

Meat quality is not only influenced by breed but also rearing environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different housing environments on growth performance, carcase traits, meat quality, physiological response pre-slaughter and fatty acid composition in two pig breeds. A total of 120 growing pigs at 60-70 days of age were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design with the breeds (Duroc × Landrace × Large White [D × L × LW] and Duroc × Landrace × Min pig [D × L × M]) and environmental enrichment (barren concrete floor or enriched with straw bedding) as factors. Each treatment was performed in triplicate with ten pigs per replicate. The pigs housed in the enriched environment exhibited a higher average daily gain, average daily feed intake, saturated fatty acid percentage and backfat depth than the pigs reared in the barren environment. Plasma cortisol levels were lower and growth hormone higher in enriched compared to barren pens. The D × L × M pigs showed lower cooking loss compared with the D × L × LW pigs. Moreover, the D × L × M pigs exhibited poor growth performance but had a better water-holding capacity. Only carcase traits and meat quality interaction effects were observed. We concluded that an enriched environment can reduce preslaughter stress and improve the growth performance of pigs and modulate the fatty acid composition of pork products.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between bone quality in terms of metabolism, homeostasis of elements, bone mineral density (BMD), and microstructure and keel-bone fractures in laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus). One hundred and twenty 17 week old Lohmann White laying hens with normal keel bones were individually housed in furnished cages for 25 weeks. Birds were then euthanased and dissected to assess keel-bone status at 42 weeks. Serum and keel-bone samples from normal keel (NK) and fractured keel (FK) hens were collected to determine the previously mentioned bone quality parameters. The results showed FK hens to have higher levels of the components of osteocalcin, greater alkaline phosphatase activity in serum and keel bones, and greater tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity in keel bones, compared to NK hens. Additionally, FK hens also had higher concentrations of Li, B, K, Cu, As, Se, Sn, Hg, and Pb, but lower concentrations of Na, P, and Ca. Moreover, FK hens showed decreased bone microstructural parameters including bone volume/tissue volume, trabecular number, degree of anisotropy, connectivity density, and BMD, but increased trabecular separation. Meanwhile, no differences were detected in serum TRAP activity, trabecular thickness, bone surface, or bone surface/bone volume. Results showed laying hens with keel-bone fractures to have differences in bone metabolism, elements of home-ostasis, bone microstructure parameters, and BMD. These results suggest that keel-bone fractures may be associated with bone quality.

A small spheroid settling in a quiescent fluid experiences an inertial torque that aligns it so that it settles with its broad side first. Here we show that an active particle experiences such a torque too, as it settles in a fluid at rest. For a spherical squirmer, the torque is $\boldsymbol {T}^\prime = -{\frac {9}{8}} m_f (\boldsymbol {v}_s^{(0)} \wedge \boldsymbol {v}_g^{(0)})$ where $\boldsymbol {v}_s^{(0)}$ is the swimming velocity, $\boldsymbol {v}_g^{(0)}$ is the settling velocity in the Stokes approximation and $m_f$ is the equivalent fluid mass. This torque aligns the swimming direction against gravity: swimming up is stable, swimming down is unstable.
