El Mirón is an important archaeological cave site in Cantabria (Spain) with a stratigraphy covering the late Middle Paleolithic to the Modern Period. The Magdalenian levels are especially rich in artifacts, faunal remains, and features, and included the burial of an adult female (“the Red Lady”), as well as other scattered human remains, while the Neolithic levels contained the oldest combined evidence of ceramics, domesticated grain and livestock in the region. However, in the absence of diagnostic artifacts in many levels that would always provide a traditional cultural chronology, radiocarbon dating has been essential in understanding the temporal framework for human activity at the site. Over the duration of more than two decades, the El Mirón Project has therefore obtained 93 radiocarbon dates, which cover the entire stratigraphic record as found in several different excavation areas. In light of the considerable methodological advances that radiocarbon dating has seen since 1996 we aim to evaluate the reliability of the published 14C record for El Mirón Cave, and to improve the accuracy of the radiocarbon based chronostratigraphy through Bayesian modeling. The results shed light on which dates may be used for future research and where dating discrepancies reflect taphonomic processes, thereby advancing intra-site and regional archaeological comparisons.

Nanostructuring can be either spontaneously appearing (such as laser-induced periodic surface structures, and diffraction patterns – for example, in windows of grid proximity-standing at the ablated target-surface) or artificially created (like – as we hoped – interference patterns) that can be in some extend controlled. Due to that a new interferometer (belonging to wave-front division category) with two aspheric mirrors has been developed. Each of these mirrors reflects approximately one half of incoming laser beam and focuses it into a point image. Both focused beams have to intersect each other, and in the intersection region an interference pattern was expected. However, the first tests showed that some other spontaneously appearing interference pattern with substantially larger fringe-pitch is generated. The origin of this idle interference pattern is discussed.

The comments of Stanford and Bradley (above) do not address our criticisms and obfuscate the topic at hand with irrelevant data (e.g. the south-to-north movement of fluted points through the Ice Free Corridor), nonexistent data (e.g. ‘under the water’ or ‘destroyed sites’), and questionable data (e.g. Meadowcroft and Cactus Hill are by no means widely accepted, nor are Stanford and Bradley's ‘eight LGM sites’ in the mid-Atlantic region). Before touching on some of these points, we direct the reader to several recent articles (e.g. Morrow 2014; Raff & Bolnick 2014) that provide new evidence or arguments inconsistent with a trans-Atlantic migration, including the fact that DNA from the Clovis Anzick child (Montana) shows no European ancestry (Rasmussen et al. 2014). Although Stanford and Bradley describe their Solutrean ‘solution’ (Stanford & Bradley 1999) to the Pleistocene colonisation of North America as ‘testable’, their position is that the idea is correct until falsified. They propose that their colleagues have yet to provide sufficient ‘critiques’ or ‘challenges’ to discount it (see also Collins 2012; Collins et al. 2013). Yet they are the ones proposing a hypothesis inconsistent with overwhelming multidisciplinary evidence, and they ignore results of tests that do not support their claims.

Across Atlantic ice: the origin of America's Clovis culture (Stanford & Bradley 2012) is the latest iteration of a controversial proposal that North America was first colonised by people from Europe rather than from East Asia, as most researchers accept. The authors, Dennis Stanford and Bruce Bradley, argue that Solutrean groups from southern France and the Iberian Peninsula used watercraft to make their way across the North Atlantic and into North America during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). According to Stanford and Bradley, this 6000km journey was facilitated by a continuous ice shelf that provided fresh water and a food supply. Across Atlantic ice has received a number of positive reviews. Shea (2012: 294), for example, suggests that it is “an excellent example of hypothesis-building in the best tradition of processual archaeology. It challenges American archaeology in a way that will require serious research by its opponents”. Runnels (2012) is equally enthusiastic.

Recently, new electronic technologies have supplemented older mechanisms of communication between members of Congress and their constituents. These technologies have enhanced members' options for communication, both with constituents and other interested parties. This research examines member use of one specific electronic communication medium: Twitter. Using original data to examine patterns of use, two models predict the probability of a member adopting Twitter based on political, personal, and district-level variables.

This work demonstrates the patterning of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) by ablation with Ar8+ ion laser (λ = 46.9 nm) pumped by pulse, high-current, capillary-discharge. For focusing a long-focal spherical mirror (R = 2100 mm) covered by 14 double-layer Sc-Si coating was used. The ablated focal spots demonstrate not only that the energy of our laser is sufficient for such experiments, but also that the design of focusing optics must be more sophisticated: severe aberrations were revealed — an irregular spot shape and strong astigmatism with astigmatic difference as large as 16 mm. In some cases, on the bottom of ablated spots a laser-induced periodic surface structure appeared. Finally, an illumination of the sample through quadratic hole 7.5 × 7.5 µm, standing in contact with PMMA substrate ablated from the surface a strongly developed two-dimensional diffraction pattern (period in the center about 125 nm).

Proximity wall stabilized, fast (>4 × 1011 A/s), high current (>40 kA) discharges are capable to create long, dense, hot, stable, non-equilibrium plasma column, suitable e.g., for radiation amplification or even for lasing in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray region. Exploding wire in water resembles a metal-vapor-filled capillary with liquid, ever fresh wall (without any metallic deposit). Modeling of wire explosion (inclusive melting and boiling phase transitions, thermal diffusion, and variable conductivity) by the originally skinned driving current is described. Modeling results are compared with measurement of the discharge current and with side-on and end-on monitoring of H-alpha line emission. Analysis of H-alpha line profile is used for diagnostic of water-vapor layer around the wire. The differences between model and reality are attributed to the fact that the pressure dependence of material constants was neglected in the first approximation.

In this study, 82 sex offenders incarcerated at the Massachusetts Treatment Center were administered a brief structured clinical interview focusing on caregiver and institutional history up to age 18. Interview data were examined along with archival information coded from the clinical files. Four factors were derived from principal components analysis and were entered into a series of multiple regression analyses. There were two noteworthy results. First, sexual and nonsexual aggression in adulthood each were related to distinct aspects of developmental history. Whereas caregiver inconstancy and sexual deviation in the family wére related to the severity of sexual aggression, childhood and juvenile institutional history and physical abuse and neglect were associated with severity of nonsexual aggression. Second, contrary to previous studies of other criminal populations, the severity of aggression rather than frequency of crimes was predicted by developmental history. The results of the study suggest that childhood experiences with and disruption of caregiver relationships may be important to understanding sexual aggression in adulthood.

Two basic ways to amplification of spontaneous emission in the soft X-ray region are described. The first is based on the electron-collisional recombination pumping scheme, which uses recombination of fully stripped ions into hydrogen-like ions to create (in the case of sufficiently fast cooling) a population inversion on energy levels belonging to the Balmer-alpha transition. We test this scheme on nitrogen, for which the lasing wavelength is 13.4 nm. The second way to amplification of spontaneous emission is based on the electron-collisional excitation pumping scheme: this uses for creation of population inversion a fast excitation of Ne- or Ni-like ions. However, for wavelength below 15 nm it is necessary to use Ni-like ions of some metal vapors. Feeding metal vapors into a capillary is difficult, and if being fed they deposit on the capillary wall and significantly reduce the capillary lifetime. That is why we prepare metal vapor plasma in a capillary with liquid wall – by wire explosion in water. For slowdown of the plasma-channel expansion a local-water-compression by linearly focused shock wave is being developed.

A numerical scheme based on the pseudospectral method has been implemented in order to study three-dimensional convection in a fluid-saturated cube of porous material. With increasing Rayleigh number R, convection first evolves from a symmetric steady state (S) to a partially non-symmetric steady state (S’, physical symmetry in the vertical direction is preserved). The transition Rayleigh number is about 550. At a Rayleigh number of 575 the flow becomes oscillatory P(1) with a single frequency that increases with R. At a value of R between 650 and 680 the oscillation becomes quasi-periodic with at least two fundamental frequencies. It returns to a simply periodic state in a narrow range about R = 725. A further increase of R transforms the simply periodic state again to a quasi-periodic state. The sequence of three-dimensional time-dependent states resembles previously studied two-dimensional cases in that evolution from more complex states to less complex states occurs with increasing R. The partial symmetry breaking prior to the onset of time dependence is unique to the three-dimensional flows, but a dependence of the S → S’ transition on the step size in R suggests the possibility that S → S’ might not occur prior to S → P(1) for sufficiently small steps in R. The quasi-periodic flows sometimes exhibit intermittency, causing difficulty in exactly defining their spectral characteristics.

A pseudo-spectral numerical scheme is used to study two-dimensional, single-cell, time-dependent convection in a square cross-section of fluid saturated porous material heated from below. With increasing Rayleigh number R convection evolves from steady S to chaotic NP through the sequence of bifurcations S→P(1)→QP2→P(2)→NP, where P(1) and P(2) are simply periodic regimes and QP2 is a quasi-periodic state with two basic frequencies. The transitions (from onset of convection to chaos) occur at Rayleigh numbers of 4π2, 380–400, 500–520, 560–570, and 850–1000. In the first simply periodic regime the fundamental frequency f1 varies as $R^{\frac{7}{8}} $ and the average Nusselt number $\overline{Nu}$ is proportional to $R^{\frac{2}{3}}$; in P(2), f1 varies as $R^{\frac{3}{2}}$ and $\overline{Nu}\propto R^{\frac{11}{10}}$. Convection in QP2 exhibits hysteresis, i.e. if the QP2 state is reached from P(1) (P(2)) by increasing (decreasing) R then the frequency with the largest spectral power is the one consistent with the extrapolation of f1 according to $R^{\frac{7}{8}}(R^{\frac{3}{2}})$. The chaotic states are characterized by spectral peaks with at least 3 fundamental frequencies superimposed on a broadband background noise. The time dependence of these states arises from the random generation of tongue-like disturbances within the horizontal thermal boundary layers. Transition to the chaotic regime is accompanied by the growth of spectral components that destroy the centre-symmetry of convection in the other states. Over-truncation can lead to spurious transitions and bifurcation sequences; in general it produces overly complex flows.

Numerical simulations of single-cell, two-dimensional, time-dependent thermal convection in a square cross-section of fluid-saturated porous material heated uniformly from below reveal a series of transitions between distinct oscillatory dynamical regimes. With increasing Rayleigh number R, the flow first evolves from steady-state behaviour into periodic motion with a single frequency f which depends on R approximately according to $f\propto R^{\frac{7}{8}}$ the transition Rayleigh number lies between about 380 and 400. At a value of R between about 480 and 500 the flow transforms into a fluctuating state characterized by two frequencies. Soon thereafter, for R between about 500 and 520, it reverts back to single-frequency periodic behaviour with f approximately proportional to $R^{\frac{3}{2}}$. The two frequencies in the narrow transition regime may be locked to a rational ratio, in which case the flow is periodic, or they may be commensurate, in which case the flow is quasi-periodic. The spectral characteristics of numerical realizations of unsteady convection and the occurrences of transitions therein are highly dependent on truncation level in Galerkin schemes or resolution in finite-difference approaches.

Background. Individuals with acute infections experience a range of symptoms including fatigue, malaise, muscle aches, and difficulties with concentration and memory that are usually self-limited. This cluster of symptoms is otherwise, similar to those that characterize chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The goal of the present study was to evaluate the cognitive and psychological functioning of CFS patients and normal controls (NCs) when they both were experiencing acute influenza-like symptoms. To induce influenza-like symptoms, we administered interleukin-6 (IL-6), a cytokine that temporarily activates the acute phase immunological and endocrine responses.

Methods. Nineteen patients who met the 1994 International CFS Study Group Criteria and ten normal controls (NCs) completed routine clinical evaluations, neuropsychological tests of short-term memory, selective attention, and executive control, and self-ratings of somatic symptoms and psychological mood before, shortly following, and 1 day after IL-6 administration.

Results. CFS patients consistently reported more somatic symptoms, even when both groups perceived that they were ill. Both groups somatic symptoms increased during the IL-6 challenge, but the CFS patients symptoms increased more rapidly than controls. In general, the CFS patients performed similarly to NCs on the cognitive measures before, during, and after the IL-6. In contrast to predictions, IL-6 provocation did not impair the cognitive performance of either CFS patients or NCs.

Conclusions. The IL-6 provocation exacerbated the patients self-reported symptoms but did not reveal notable cognitive impairments between patients and controls during cytokine-induced acute influenza-like symptoms.
