The Taipan galaxy survey (hereafter simply ‘Taipan’) is a multi-object spectroscopic survey starting in 2017 that will cover 2π steradians over the southern sky (δ ≲ 10°, |b| ≳ 10°), and obtain optical spectra for about two million galaxies out to z < 0.4. Taipan will use the newly refurbished 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory with the new TAIPAN instrument, which includes an innovative ‘Starbugs’ positioning system capable of rapidly and simultaneously deploying up to 150 spectroscopic fibres (and up to 300 with a proposed upgrade) over the 6° diameter focal plane, and a purpose-built spectrograph operating in the range from 370 to 870 nm with resolving power R ≳ 2000. The main scientific goals of Taipan are (i) to measure the distance scale of the Universe (primarily governed by the local expansion rate, H0) to 1% precision, and the growth rate of structure to 5%; (ii) to make the most extensive map yet constructed of the total mass distribution and motions in the local Universe, using peculiar velocities based on improved Fundamental Plane distances, which will enable sensitive tests of gravitational physics; and (iii) to deliver a legacy sample of low-redshift galaxies as a unique laboratory for studying galaxy evolution as a function of dark matter halo and stellar mass and environment. The final survey, which will be completed within 5 yrs, will consist of a complete magnitude-limited sample (i ⩽ 17) of about 1.2 × 106 galaxies supplemented by an extension to higher redshifts and fainter magnitudes (i ⩽ 18.1) of a luminous red galaxy sample of about 0.8 × 106 galaxies. Observations and data processing will be carried out remotely and in a fully automated way, using a purpose-built automated ‘virtual observer’ software and an automated data reduction pipeline. The Taipan survey is deliberately designed to maximise its legacy value by complementing and enhancing current and planned surveys of the southern sky at wavelengths from the optical to the radio; it will become the primary redshift and optical spectroscopic reference catalogue for the local extragalactic Universe in the southern sky for the coming decade.

Our knowledge of the universe comes from recording the photon and particle fluxes incident on the Earth from space. We thus require sensitive measurement across the entire energy spectrum, using large telescopes with efficient instrumentation located on superb sites. Technological advances and engineering constraints are nearing the point where we are recording as many photons arriving at a site as is possible. Major advances in the future will come from improving the quality of the site. The ultimate site is, of course, beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, such as on the Moon, but economic limitations prevent our exploiting this avenue to the degree that the scientific community desires. Here we describe an alternative, which offers many of the advantages of space for a fraction of the cost: the Antarctic Plateau.

We use the wide-field capabilities of the 2 degree field fibre positioner and the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) to obtain redshifts of galaxies that hosted supernovae during the first 3 years of the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). With exposure times ranging from 10 to 60 ks per galaxy, we were able to obtain redshifts for 400 host galaxies in two SNLS fields, thereby substantially increasing the total number of SNLS supernovae with host galaxy redshifts. The median redshift of the galaxies in our sample that hosted photometrically classified Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is z ~ 0.77, which is 25% higher than the median redshift of spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia in the 3-year sample of the SNLS. Our results demonstrate that one can use wide-field fibre-fed multi-object spectrographs on 4-m telescopes to efficiently obtain redshifts for large numbers of supernova host galaxies over the large areas of the sky that will be covered by future high-redshift supernova surveys, such as the Dark Energy Survey.

Ten years ago our team completed the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on the extragalactic distance scale. Cepheids were detected in some 25 galaxies and used to calibrate four secondary distance indicators that reach out into the expansion field beyond the noise of galaxy peculiar velocities. The result was H0 = 72 ± 8 km s−1 Mpc−1 and put an end to galaxy distances uncertain by a factor of two. This work has been awarded the Gruber Prize in Cosmology for 2009.

We present deep photometry to V ~ 27.5 obtained with the HST in several fields in the LMC and the SMC. We derive luminosity functions for the faintest stars which are consistent with an initial mass function similar to that of the solar neighborhood, although moderate variations are not excluded. We discuss implications of these observations for the star formation history in these regions of the LMC and SMC.

Since the pioneering objective prism surveys by Westerlund (1960) and Blanco et al. (1980), the Magellanic Clouds have proved a fruitful site for exploring the evolution of AGB stars. We have used photometric techniques to extend the prism C-star surveys to M- and S-type AGB stars, constructing luminosity functions and obtaining spectra of individual stars for comparison with theoretical predictions. We have concentrated on the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), but we have recently obtained observations of luminous red giants in a region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). In this paper we compare the results from these studies of the two satellite systems.

It is traditional to begin a review on the subject of the Magellanic Clouds with a discussion of the distance of the Clouds. Feast did this in his introductory remarks to the meeting, and I shall not resist the temptation to reflect a little on this subject. At the Tubingen meeting we gave some thought to a new controversy between a (short) distance modulus of 18.2 for the LMC and the more traditional (Long) distance of 18.7. The short distance was primarily the result of main sequence fitting to LMC clusters resulting from new CCD photometry. A consensus has arisen since that time, and is represented at this meeting by results presented by Walker and Caldwell, and earlier by Reid and Strugnell (1986) and recently by Jacoby et al. (1990), that the best value of (m-M)o is 18.45±0.15 for the LMC (which is also the average of the short and long values). This is obtained, however, by given low weight to (firstly) recent work on the absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars based on the Baade-Wesselink technique and (secondly) the aforementioned main sequence fitting results

The globular cluster Kron 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud presents an interesting opportunity to study stellar evolution in a population of intermediate age populous enough to contain many stars in short-lived phases of their evolution. The cluster lies approximately two degrees west of the body of the SMC and just outside the tidal radius of the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc.

This review will take the linear view of the history of stellar systems. Thus the last billion years of a dwarf galaxy’s development receives no special attention. A considerable amount of information has recently come to light on the intermediate age populations of dwarf galaxies.

The spatial distribution of galaxies in the Local Supercluster, as described at this meeting, together with the measured anisotropy in the microwave background suggest that there exist significant deviations from a uniform Hubble flow in the velocity field of galaxies within a few thousand km/s. In principle, it is not too hard to improve on the uniform flow model: one simply needs to examine the spatial distribution of the radial velocity residuals for many nearby galaxies. In practice, the problem is non-trivial because of the coupling of velocity and distance, and the lack of a distance indicator of high precision, and the “thermal” noise in the velocity field. Our recent efforts in this direction are described in more detail in a paper in a current Astrophysical Journal (Aaronson et al. 1982a).

The need for establishing classification criteria at long wavelengths is stressed. The usefulness of doing this is illustrated with a discussion of the composite spectra of FU Orionis stars. Spectra of these pre-main-sequence stars from 1.5-2.5μ were obtained with a Fourier Transform Spectrometer. Luminosity criteria in the l-2μ range are also discussed with application to M stars.
