The adsorption of CO2 at low temperature (~ -70°C) on thin films of homoionic smectites was studied by X-ray diffraction and by i.r. absorption. An increase in the d001 spacings of these clay films upon adsorption of CO2 was observed. In addition, a dichroic effect was readily discernible by comparing the i.r. spectra at two different orientations of the smectite films; i.e. with the film normal and tilted 35° with respect to the i.r. beam. The CO2 stretching vibration at 2350 cm-1 was used for the i.r. study. These observations conclusively show that CO2 intercalates the smectite structure rather than being adsorbed only in pores between clay tactoids—the limiting process proposed by other investigators.

Adsorption isotherm data from earlier surface area studies are re-examined here through application of the Dubinin equation. Again, intercalation is demonstrated by convergence of the plotted experimental data for smectites containing large monovalent interlayer cations toward a pore volume that is near the calculated theoretical value for a monolayer of intercalated CO2.

Scanning electron photomicrographs of Li- and Cs- smectites provide additional evidence that aggregation differences are not responsible for the large observed difference in BET surface areas obtained for these smectites with CO2 as the adsorbate. At low magnification, visual differences in macro-aggregates are apparent, but at high magnification no significant differences are observed in the micro-structure of individual aggregates where the major amount of gas adsorption really occurs.

The adsorption of the cationic oxidized safranine S+ by a Na+, Ni2+ and Fe3+ montmorillonite has been studied with X-ray powder diffraction, u.v., visible and i.r. spectroscopy. In solution S+ may be protonated: S+, SH2+ and SH23+ have characteristic spectra in the 500–600 nm region where the clay structure does not absorb. In the Na+ as well as in the Ni2+ and Fe3+ clays, the adsorption of S+ is a cation exchange process accompanied by the protonation of the adsorbed dye such as variable concentrations of M+ (Na+, Ni2+ or Fe3+), S+ and SH2+ are simultaneously present. Protonation activity decreases from Fe3+ to Ni2+ and Na+, being the protonation site the amine group as shown by i.r. In the interlamellar space it seems that a SH2+.. S+ association exists that could be described as a sandwich structure 6.5 Å thick.

This paper attempts to show that the catalytic properties of zeolitic material may play a role in the synthesis of simple biological molecules from gases commonly found in extraterrestrial atmospheres. Linde X and Y molecular sieves cation-exchanged by Ca2+ and Fe3+ have been heated in the presence of carbon monoxide and ammonia. Amino-acids and u.v. absorbing substances identified by paper chromatography have been extracted from the solid. HCN, the basic molecule involved in the synthesis of those substances has been detected in the gas phase. It is proposed, on the basis of i.r. results, that the amino-acids are hydrolysis products of an undefined polymer.

Montmorillonite may adsorb cobalt(III)hexammine and cobalt(III)chloropentammine cations, and the C.E.C. determined for these complex cations is of the order of magnitude of that obtained with ammonium. The infrared spectra of these coordination complexes adsorbed by the clay are similar to those observed for the corresponding chloride salts. However, when montmorillonite treated with these coordination complexes is dehydrated in vacuum or under moderate temperature conditions (<100°C) in a dry atmosphere, the infrared spectra are deeply modified. The complex cations decompose with NH3 evolution and ammonium formation. Cobalt(II)hydroxide is produced and ammonium cations balance the lattice electrical charge. The true decomposition rate was followed by IR absorbance of NH4 which showed that the complex decomposition followed that for the nomothetic decomposition of solid particles. The apparent activation energy of the decomposition was 20.5 and 43 kcal/mole for the CoCl(NH3)52+- and Co(NH3)68+-montmorillonite complexes respectively. An analysis of the combined chemical and IR data on the hexammine complex permitted calculation of the NH3 diffusion rate between collapsed montmorillonite sheets. When the interplanar gap approaches 1Å the diffusion coefficient is approximately 7 × 10-19 cm2/sec. In contradiction to their stability in solutions, the cobalt(III)hexammine cation is less stable than the cobalt(III)chloropentammine cation when absorbed on montmorillonite.

Goethite, lepidocrocite and hematite were reacted with glycerol and reaction products were studied at various steps of the reaction. After a treatment of 16 hr at 245°C the final form of the reaction product, a deep green soft solid, was obtained whatever the starting material. According to hydrolysis and chemical analysis, the reaction product can be identified as iron alkoxide. Hydrolysis of the solid by boiling water yielded glycerol and a strongly magnetic material characterized by a spinel structure like maghemite and magnetite.

The iron alkoxide is seen by electron microscope as large well-formed hexagonal platelets. The similarity between a and b parameters of this compound and those of brucite suggests that the iron alkoxide structure is based on an iron (II and III) octahedral layer. The glycerol chains should be located between the sheets. Two models were proposed in which iron and oxygen, linked to the chain of glycerol, could be accommodated in octahedral layers giving a basal distance of 8·1 Å.

At least two steps are involved in the formation of the iron alkoxide: (1) a rearrangement of the structure of the starting material with accomodation of carbon in the structure and (2) a reduction of ferric iron.

Integrated intensities of the fundamental modes of vibrations of ammonium in heat-treated, NH4+-exchanged swelling minerals permits (1) a quantitative determination of the amount of tetrahedral substitutions of Si4+ by M3+ in dioctahedral smectites, and (2) an estimate of the degree of interlayer surface heterogeneity in trioctahedral minerals to be made. This is possible because NH4+ cations balancing the negative charge of tetrahedral sites that are not influenced by an excess positive charge of the octahedral layer have a symmetry lower (probably C3v) than the usual tetrahedral Td symmetry of NH4+. In C3v symmetry the ν1 band is infrared active whereas it is only Raman active in Td symmetry. Protons left after deammoniating dioctahedral smectites with tetrahedral substitutions form interlayer silanol groups, the stretching vibration of which give a band that is distinct from that of octahedral OH-stretching modes.

Adsorption isotherms of HCN by Cu- and Ca-montmorillonites show that water present in the interlayer space decreases HCN adsorption.

For Ca-montmorillonite, i.r. spectra permit distinguishing between HCN interacting with the cations and molecules filling the interlayer space. Both types are removed upon outgassing. The residual water is not displaced by HCN.

On Cu-montmorillonite, species (presumably CN− ions) strongly held by the cations are observed in addition to adsorbed HCN molecules. The residual hydroxyls retained in the interlayer space are removed by the adsorption of HCN. These hydroxyls, either OH− or H2O, are characterized by two well defined stretching bands.

Infra-red spectra of samples heated below 200°C show that adsorbed HCN is involved in chemical reactions. For both clays, bands appear in the region characteristic of carbonyl and carboxyl groups; the production of ammonium is detected for Cu-montmorillonite. The reactions and the observed spectral features could be accounted for by the formation of formamide.

Stable organomineral derivatives are formed by reaction of organochlorosilanes with certain phyllosilicates. Organosiloxyl functions are grafted on silanol groups present at external mineral surfaces.

Water molecules adsorbed on external mineral surfaces may cause hydrolysis of the reactant organosilicon products, with liberation of HCl. This, in turn, may react with the silicate: octahedral cations are extracted from the lattice and fresh Si-OH groups, capable of further grafting, are formed on the mineral surface.

On the other hand, when difunctional reagents such as methylvinyldichlorosilane are used and if the ratio of adsorbed water to added reactive is adequate, then polymeric species with polysiloxane chains are grafted on the mineral.

Because of its high content of silanol groups, sepiolite forms organomineral compounds having a relatively high organic matter content. With chrysotile, the amount of organic matter grafted to the silicate, is considerably smaller, but it increases appreciably if water is added to the reacting products. This is attributed to hydrolysis of the organic reactant and subsequent destruction of external “brucitic” layers by acid attack.

Electrochemical treatment of kaolinite-glass bead plugs in the presence of water and CaCl2 solutions produces dissolution of the glass beads, corrosion of the anodes, and transport of the released elements toward the cathodic zone. In this area, new mineral phases (both amorphous and crystalline) are synthesized. Most of these new phases, and especially the calcium silicate hydrate (CSH-1), are well known to exhibit important cementing properties. The nature and the extent of the modifications brought about by the treatment are dependent on the nature of the electrodes, the pH and the ionic strength of the circulating electrolyte, and the duration of the treatment.

Nitrogen surface areas and pore-size distribution curves of various chrysotiles have been measured using a continuous flow method. A model founded on a hexagonal close packing of fibers has been adjusted to fit the frequency distribution curve of the fiber outside diameters obtained from electron micrographs. From this model, theoretical distribution functions of the surface area versus the pore diameter were computed and compared to the experimental data. For one fiber only (i.e. Coalinga chrysotile), the good agreement between the computed and experimental data allows one to conclude that the external pores (between the fibers) and the internal pores (within the fibers) are free from any amorphous material. For the other studied chrysotiles, the degree of filling of the pore system by amorphous materials was always higher than 50%. Under these conditions, hydration water cannot be removed unless the samples are pretreated in the 300°–400°C temperature range. On the contrary, water is driven off from the “clean” Coalinga fibers at temperatures lower than 100°C. Surface area measurements derived from water-adsorption isotherms correspond to those obtained with nitrogen after the hydration water has been removed.

A structure model for amorphous hydrated or dehydrated silico-aluminas with composition varying between 0 < Al: Al + Si < 1 is presented. A central core made from a tetrahedral network in which silicon is partially substituted by aluminium carries a net negative electrical charge. This charge is balanced by more or less polymerized hydroxyaluminium cations forming a coating around the core.

As Al: Al + Si increases, the number of substitutions in the core increases as well as the complexity of the hydroxyaluminium cations in the coating.

For Al: Al + Si ≳ 0·8, a demixing is observed, leading to the formation of a crystalline pseudo-boehmite and bayerite.

Upon heating, the coating as well as the demixed phases are transformed into a spinel structure containing tetrahedral aluminium, while the core structure remains unaffected.

This model could explain the solubility features, the phosphate reaction and the catalytic properties of amorphous silico-aluminas.

The adsorption of Sn(IV)TPyP (mesotetrapyridylporphyrin) in sodium hectorite was studied using ultraviolet-visible and luminescence spectroscopy. The adsorbed complex was found to demetallate forming the TPyP dication as the clay is dehydrated. This process was found to be reversible indicating that the Sn4+ ion remains in the vicinity of the porphyrin upon demetallation. The luminescence spectrum of the adsorbed complex was found to be a composite of the Sn(IV)TPyP and the dication spectra. The presence of a band at 750 nm in the luminescence spectrum of the adsorbed species suggested an enhanced interaction between the π-systems of the pyridyl substituents and the porphin nucleus. This is believed to result from a decrease in the dihedral angle between the nucleus and the substituents when they are squeezed between the clay sheets.

A study of the thermal transformation of alkylammonium cations adsorbed on the surface of a montmorillonite in various conditions of hydration has been carried out. The experimental conditions were: inert atmosphere, temperatures below 250°C and time periods up to 270 days. The reactions observed are mainly transalkylations, for which a mechanism of acid catalysis is proposed. A high degree of dissociation of the water remaining on the surface of the clay is required and is attained for an optimal, and rather low, water content of the clay.

Pillaring of montmorillonite and beidellite with aluminum polyhydroxypolymer takes place first by the saturation of the cation-exchange capacity by monomeric and/or dimeric aluminum hydroxide species and then the intercalation of the so-called Al13-polyhydroxypolymer. The clay slurry must have a solid concentration greater than 0.01% (w/w) to produce a basal spacing of about 18 Å. Sizeable clay tactoids must therefore exist in the slurry in order to produce a turbostratic structure ordered along the c axis. The main difference between pillared montmorillonite and pillared beidellite seems to be a more ordered distribution of pillars within the interlamellar space of the clays that are rich in tetrahedral substitutions. Recent 27Al and 21Si high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance data suggest that this higher degree of ordering results from the reaction of the aluminic pillars and the clay sheet near the sites of the tetrahedral substitutions.

A corrensite from Taro Valley, Italy, was studied by infrared analysis at different temperatures in the natural state and after exchange with seven different cations. The vibrational bands in the OH-stretching region can be divided into three main absorption regions: 3690-3640, 3580-3560, and 3500-3000 cm−1. The influence of the cation hydration water was observed in the third region only, whereas the intensity, frequency, and shape of the residual bands were not related to the nature of the exchangeable cations. The bands of region I were unaffected by heating the sample to 500°C; however, those in regions II and III were destroyed. Deuteration was not observed for any of the three OH-stretching regions. The dichroic behavior of the OH-stretching bands in the three regions were relatively affected by the exchangeable cations. Generally, the bands in region I exhibited a more dichroic behavior than those in regions II and III.

From the IR data corrensite appears to consist of: (1) a trioctahedral silicate layer with an OH-stretching band at about 3685 cm−1, (2) a hydroxide layer with OH-stretching bands at about 3570 and 3420 cm−1, and (3) a distinct interlayer space that is not interstratified with the hydroxide layers.

Beidellite was synthesized hydrothermally from a noncrystalline gel at 320°C and 130 bar pressure. The beidellitic character of the product was verified by infrared spectroscopy on the NH4+-exchanged form. Intercalation was achieved with hydroxy-aluminum solutions having different OH/Al molar ratios. The solutions were investigated by several methods, including 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance. Essentially, two Al species were detected: monomelic Al and a polymerized form containing Al in four-fold coordination. This latter species was found to be selectively fixed in the interlamellar region, which resulted in a stable spacing of 18 Å at 110°C and 16.2 Å at 700°C. The pillared beidellites had specific surface areas of > 300 m2/g, mainly due to micropores. Both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites were evidenced by infrared spectroscopy using pyridine as a probe molecule.

Dealumination of vermiculite was carried out using (NH4)2SiF6 solutions. The dealuminated products were studied by high-resolution solid state 29Si and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance. A decrease in the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) resulted from the partial removal of Al from the tetrahedral layer, which decreased the framework negative charge, and from the partial replacement of Mg by Al in the octahedral layer, which increased its positive charge contribution. The lowest CEC was obtained by swelling the structure with butyl-ammonium prior to the reaction with (NH4)2SiF6. Thus, CECs in the range observed for beidellite were measured; however, the lowest (Al/Si)IV ratio was still more than twice as high as in beidellite. In addition, the dealumination reaction yielded noncrystalline silica as a by-product.

In contact with a solution of Al hydroxypolymer (Al13), the dealuminated vermiculite showed no 18-Å reflection characteristic of Al13-intercalated smectite; instead it showed an ill-defined interstratification. For some samples, however, a significant increase in the specific surface area (as much as 230 m2/g) was observed, suggesting that an intercalation of Al moieties did occur. The 27Al resonance spectra of the intercalated structure showed at least two components in octahedral coordination. On thermal activation, a resonance line attributable to pentacoordinated Al was observed.

Infrared spectroscopy is used to distinguish between octahedral and tetrahedral substitutions in an interstratified illite-smectite clay. The Hofmann-Klemen (Li) test suggests that the AlMg□ and FeMg□ octahedral vacancies are preferentially occupied by Li after thermal treatment at 250°C. The ammonium (Chourabi-Fripiat) test reveals the beidellitic character by the formation of two OH stretching modes upon deammonation. The illitic layers are not affected since K is not exchangeable.

NMR spectra of PF1-1 Floridan palygorskite strongly suggest that Al3+ occurs only in octahedral coordination. X-ray microanalysis of the palygorskite fibers indicate a chemical composition defined by the atomic ratios: Mg/Si = 0.34, Al/Si = 0.27, and Fe/Si = 0.04. Considering the NMR and CEC data in this report along with the previously published results of IR and Mössbauer spectroscopic studies, the following structural formula is proposed for PF1-1 palygorskite:
