A spontaneous autosomal mutation in C57BL/Tb mice, provisionally called reduced pigmentation, symbol rp, has pronounced effects on three kidney lysosomal glycosidase activities. Homozygous rprp mice have significantly higher activities of β-galactosidase, β-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-β-hexosaminidase than their heterozygous litter-mates. Homozygotes have light ears and tails, diluted fur and dark eyes. The mutation is not allelic to any known to affect lysosomal functions, or to a number of pigmentation variants with similar phenotypic effects. The locus is on chromosome 7.

A recessive autosomal mutation has been found in the CXBI/ByEss recombinant-inbred line but in neither of the parental strains, C57BL/6ByEss and BALB/cByEss. Its presence in the CXBI/ByJax and CXBI/ByLac sublines suggests an origin early in inbreeding. The locus, seminal vesicle shape (svs), appears to be linked to the albino locus on chromosome 7. The homozygote has seminal vesicles with a smooth tubular external appearance. In segregating crosses homozygotes had slightly lighter seminal vesicles but the weights of other androgen target organs were not reduced. Exogenous testosterone increased the size of the seminal vesicles but did not alter their shape. The mutation did not affect the pattern of proteins on SDS–acrylamide gel electrophoresis, which did differ between the parental strains. The locus affecting a 27000 Da protein has provisionally been assigned the symbol svp-4.

Eggs from reciprocal hybrids between the C57BL/6By and BALB/cBy strains were tested for their susceptibility to attack by hyaluronidase and pronase. There were significant reciprocal differences between the F1 females in the responses of their unfertilized eggs to both enzymes. The F1 hybrids from BALB mothers showed the increased susceptibility characteristic of C57BL whilst the F1 hybrids with C57BL mothers were more resistant to both enzymes, like BALB mice. Eggs from the four kinds of reciprocal F2 hybrid females also showed patroclinous patterns of susceptibility. A patroclinous difference was found between reciprocal crosses of the CXBD and CXBE recombinant inbred strains but not in crosses between recombinant inbred strains with similar phenotypes. Cross fostering did not alter the phenotypes of the C57BL and BALB females or those of their reciprocal F1 hybrids. The findings are interpreted in terms of differential genomic imprinting of paternally inherited information. The possible general usefulness of patroclinous differences between reciprocal F1 females in revealing differences in imprinting is noted.

Spleens with black pigment in them were found in 4–57% of mice from 17 stocks, all sublines of C57BL or with significant C57BL ancestry. Splenic lipofuscinosis was absent from 16 stocks, including three C57BL/6By × BALB/cBy recombinant - inbred lines. Progeny testing showed all C57BL/6J mice to be equally likely to develop black spleens. The penetrance of lipofuscinosis differed between sublines but not between the sexes or between laboratories. Susceptibility to lipofuscinosis showed dominant, autosomal, inheritance in F1 hybrids. Observations on backcrosses and on recombinant inbred lines and their intercrosses indicated the existence of two genetic factors. Splenic lipofuscinosis was prevented either by a deficiency of melanin or by homozygosity for a non-C57BL allele close to the c-p region of chromosome 7. The presence of a C57BL allele at a locus on another chromosome is necessary for lipofuscinosis to occur.
