Downloading a mobile health (m-health) app on your smartphone does not mean you will ever use it. Telling another person about an app does not mean you like it. Using an online intervention does not mean it has had an impact on your well-being. Yet we consistently rely on downloads, clicks, ‘likes’ and other usage and popularity metrics to measure m-health app engagement. Doing so misses the complexity of how people perceive and use m-health apps in everyday life to manage mental health conditions. This article questions commonly used behavioural metrics of engagement in mental health research and care, and proposes a more comprehensive approach to measuring in-app engagement.

We present radiocarbon (14C) in tree rings from Mexico City and a reconstruction of fossil CO2 concentrations for the last five decades, as part of a research program to understand the 14C dynamics in this complex urban area. Background values were established by 14C concentrations in tree rings from a nearby clean area. Agreement between background and NH-zone 2 values indicate Taxodium mucronatum is a good biomonitor for annual atmospheric 14C variations. Values for the urban tree rings were significantly lower than background values, indicating a 14C depletion from fossil CO2 emissions. There is an increasing trend of fossil CO2 between 1960 and 1990, in agreement with the population growth and the increasing demand for fossil fuels in Mexico City. Between 1990 and 2000, there is an apparent decrease in fossil CO2 concentration, increasing again after 2000. The decrease in 2000, despite being of the same magnitude as the overall uncertainty, may reflect environmental policies that improved the energy efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions in the area. The increase in fossil CO2 concentration between 2000 and 2010 may be attributable to the significant growth of motor vehicle usage in Mexico City, which made transportation the main energy-demanding and -emitting sector.

Field studies were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to explore interactions among DPX-V9360 herbicide applied postemergence, terbufos insecticide applied as an in-furrow treatment, and the environment. Field corn (‘Pioneer 3751’) and sweet corn (‘Jubilee’) were planted with and without an in-furrow application of terbufos. DPX-V9360 was applied postemergence when the corn was in the 4- to 6-leaf stage at 0, 35, 70, 140, and 280 g ai ha-1 with nonionic surfactant and 28% N fertilizer solution. Crop response to DPX-V9360 was similar at all three locations, varying only in magnitude of injury. Crop injury was greater with Jubilee sweet corn than with Pioneer 3751 field corn. Injury to both hybrids increased as DPX-V9360 application rate increased. Application of terbufos increased injury from DPX-V9360 to both hybrids. Significant yield reduction did not occur with either hybrid when DPX-V9360 was applied at rates of 140 g ha-1 or less and no terbufos was applied.

Field experiments were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in 1990 to explore interactions between nicosulfuron applied POST and terbufos insecticide at 0.06 or 0.11 g ai/m of row applied in-furrow on ‘Pioneer 3751’ field corn and ‘Jubilee’ sweet corn. Nicosulfuron at 0, 70, and 140 g ai/ha plus nonionic surfactant and 28% nitrogen fertilizer was applied to both corn types. Field corn response to nicosulfuron and terbufos was similar at all locations, whereas sweet corn injury varied with location. Nicosulfuron injured field corn more when applied at the four-leaf than the three-leaf stage. Injury to both corn types increased as nicosulfuron rate increased or when applied following terbufos. Nicosulfuron at 140 g/ha without terbufos did not reduce yield of either corn type; however, corn previously treated in-furrow with terbufos reduced yield.

Field experiments were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to evaluate injurious interactions between nicosulfuron herbicide applied POST and nine insecticides applied at planting on ‘Pioneer 3751’ field corn in 1991. Insecticides were applied in-furrow, T-band, and surface band at planting. Corn injury from nicosulfuron and terbufos applications was more severe in Wisconsin than in Michigan. No corn injury was observed in Minnesota. Terbufos 15% ai granule (15G) or 20% ai controlled release granule (20CR) increased nicosulfuron injury to corn in Wisconsin. Nicosulfuron at 35 g ai/ha caused the greatest vigor reduction following terbufos 15G, intermediate vigor reduction following terbufos 20CR, phorate 20G, or phorate 20CR, and the least vigor reduction following fonofos, chlorpyrifos, chlorethoxyfos, tefluthrin, or carbofuran in Wisconsin.

We present preliminary results from a programme designed to produce deep images of radio source fields drawn from the Parkes 2700 MHz and Molongolo 408 MHz catalogues using the charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera system built at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge. The programme is directed at a search both for faint extensions and nebulosity around radio QSOs and BL Lac objects and for faint objects in otherwise empty radio source fields; a detailed examination of the morphology of selected radio galaxies is also included.

Collaboration is used by the US National Security Council as a means to integrate inter-federal government agencies during planning and execution of common goals towards unified, national security. The concept of collaboration has benefits in the healthcare system by building trust, sharing resources, and reducing costs. The current terrorist threats have made collaborative medical training between military and civilian agencies crucial.

This review summarizes the long and rich history of collaboration between civilians and the military in various countries and provides support for the continuation and improvement of collaborative efforts. Through collaboration, advances in the treatment of injuries have been realized, deaths have been reduced, and significant strides in the betterment of the Emergency Medical System have been achieved. This review promotes collaborative medical training between military and civilian medical professionals and provides recommendations for the future based on medical collaboration.

It has been well established that some of the features of the feeding and digestive process in molluscs are rhythmic in character. Notably Hirsch (1915, 1917, 1931) has demonstrated a rhythmic periodicity of secretion in the salivary glands and digestive glands of some carnivorous Gastropoda, and Krijgsman (1925, 1928) has done similar work on the land pulmonate Helix. In all of these animals—and in cephalopods, too, where there is a more elaborate nervous control of secretion—discontinuous feeding is the rule. In the other and perhaps larger category of molluscs—those continuously feeding on fine particles—the central mechanism of the gut is the crystalline style, or its forerunner the protostyle. Here the need is, in Yonge's words (1937), ‘to the extent to which they depend on extracellular enzymes for digestion, continuous secretion’. In Yonge's view, now classical, the style was regarded as ‘an ideal mechanism for the continuous liberation of small quantities of an amylolytic enzyme’. Graham (1939), in his work on style-bearing gastropods, showed that the style is in general confined to animals with a continuous feeding habit, whether by ciliary means or by using the radula to graze on and rasp off fine particles. It is known that style secretion stops and the style is frequentiy dissolved when animals are removed from the water and cease feeding (see Yonge, 1925).

Akera bullata O. F. Müller is a tectibranch mollusc having a coiled external shell and a foot with lateral extensions used for swimming. At certain times of the year it swims actively, as was observed by Donovan, who writes that it ‘sports in its watery element with all the liveliness of a butterfly, and formed a pleasing object when kept alive in a glass of sea water’ (quoted by Montagu, 1803). Although sometimes abundant locally, it is not a mollusc often taken by the collector, even though it is a conspicuous object when swimming.

Lasaea rubra, like other small Erycinacea, is unusual among eulamellibranchs in its relatively great mobility on the surface of the substrate. It can crawl about as freely as a small gastropod and lays down a mucous trail for the attachment of its progressing foot, drawing the shell and body rhythmically forward after each advance thrust of the foot. Unlike some other Erycinacea, L. rubra has no well-defined sole; it attaches by the sharp lower edge and part of the side of the foot, which is strongly ciliated and well supplied with mucous glands. In most burrowing eulamellibranchs, the site of communication with the surrounding water has shifted to the paired siphons at the posterior end. The Erycinacea, however, have an anterior inhalant siphon; and—as in forward moving prosobranch gastropods (Morton, 1958)—there is an obvious adaptive advantage in receiving the ingoing current from the water into which the animal is moving.

The family Otinidae is the smallest and probably the least known among the pulmonates. Thiele (1931) places it at the base of the Basommatophora, the more primitive order of the subclass Pulmonata, in the Stirps Actophila. It contains a single species, Otina otis Turton, with a geographical range confined to the coasts of the British Isles and north-west France. Its northern distribution reaches as far as the Firth of Clyde, according to Jeffreys (1869), and over the greater part of its British range it appears to follow fairly closely the distribution of the barnacle Chthamalus stellatus, which here reaches its northern limit. Otina otis is a tiny snail, and its external form is limpet-like. The shell, which is well described by Jeffreys (1869), and also by Ellis (1926), measures up to 2*5 mm in length, with a short apical visceral coil at the posterior end. It is dark chestnut brown in colour, and most resembles a minute Haliotis.

A study has been made of the ecology of the small intertidal lamellibranch Lasaea rubra at various tidal levels at Plymouth and Wembury. In addition, experiments have been carried out to investigate physiological and behavioural differences arising from varying amounts of submersion at different tidal levels, and the following findings have been made.

During the first hour after their submersion by sea water, L. rubra from high up the shore filter at a rate approximately twice that of animals which live lower down. After 2 h, however, both sets of animals filter at the same rate.

High-level animals respond significantly faster to wetting by splash and can tolerate a considerable range of salinity. They also respire at a rate approximately twice that of low-level animals. Respiration, however, is not detectable when the animal is not immersed in sea water.

The Plymouth Fauna List contains records of two genera of pteropods, Limacina and Clione. Of the first, Limacina retroversa (Flem.) is by far the better-known species, apparently occurring regularly at Plymouth in large numbers in townettings from outside, and sometimes inside, the Sound. It breeds at Plymouth from June to August, and Lebour (1932) has given a detailed account of its breeding and larval stages and has discussed its role in the plankton. The second species of Limacina at Plymouth is lesueuri (d'Orbigny), which has been observed from time to time since 1906, when it was very common. The last record in the Fauna is off the Breakwater in 1920. Of the gymnosomatous pteropods, Clione limacina Phipps is the only species regularly occurring. Lebour (1931) has described the life history of this form, and mentions February to August as its months of greatest abundance. Its breeding season is June to August. Another gymnosome, tentatively referred to as Clionina longicauda, is reported by Russell (1936), and from the specimen department at Plymouth Laboratory the writer obtained some preserved specimens, not easily identifiable, of a Pneumodermopsis taken locally; its species is perhaps ciliata, recorded by Massy (1917) from the Irish Coast.

The main picture of the zonation of life between tide marks on British shores has been added to by a good deal of recent work, such as that of Colman (1932) and Evans (1947) at Plymouth, and the regional studies by Stephenson & Stephenson (1949). Of the more restricted special habitats within the tidal area there have been fewer accounts, though Colman (1940) has made a detailed survey of the faunas inhabiting intertidal seaweeds, which was later followed by Wieser (1952). Most recently there has appeared a paper by Glynne-Williams & Hobart (1952), working at Anglesey, which for the first time analysed clearly the composition and food relations of the restricted fauna living in crevices in this habitat. This part of the tidal zone forms an interesting meeting place of two faunal elements, those intertidal animals of terrestrial origin and those which are truly marine. In the summer of 1950 and 1951 the present writer had made a similar study in the Plymouth area, at Wembury and some other localities. The work was begun as part of an ecological study of the two marine pulmonates Leucophytia bidentata and Otina otis, and was later extended to take account of the other animals hidden in crevices and those living on the exposed rock surface throughout the upper half of the tidal zone.

Lasaea rubra is the smallest and commonest of Plymouth bivalves. It is intertidal on rocky shores, often in immense numbers, in crevices and other protected places, and in Pygmaea pumila (Colman, 1940). This bivalve is an excellent laboratory animal. It remains fully active for several days under laboratory conditions, and a large number of animals can be used in a single experiment, eliminating the variations in activity found when dealing with a few, or single specimens of larger animals. Because of the relatively high position Lasaea rubra may occupy on the shore its feeding cycle is broken by regular dry periods at each tide. Thus, for experiments relating to periodicity in feeding, we have an animal whose times of feeding can easily be ascertained and experimentally varied over a wide range. Lastly, in making serial sections and in examining total gut contents, in work on the digestive system, the small size of the animal is of obvious advantage.
