The production of beef cattle has historically been an important component of the Southeast's agricultural economy. In 1977 the region had 24.6 million cattle and calves, accounting for more than 28 percent of the total mature beef animals in the United States [3]. Despite this large and active cattle industry, however, the region is substantially deficient in carcass beef production.

It is now well established that a fraction of the massive (M > 8 M⊙) star population hosts strong, organised magnetic fields, most likely of fossil origin. The details of the generation and evolution of these fields are still poorly understood. The BinaMIcS project takes an important step towards the understanding of the interplay between binarity and magnetism during the stellar formation and evolution, and in particular the genesis of fossil fields, by studying the magnetic properties of close binary systems. The components of such systems are most likely formed together, at the same time and in the same environment, and can therefore help us to disentangle the role of initial conditions on the magnetic properties of the massive stars from other competing effects such as age or rotation. We present here the main scientific objectives of the BinaMIcS project, as well as preliminary results from the first year of observations from the associated ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimetric surveys.

The Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) project represents the largest systematic survey of stellar magnetism ever undertaken. Based on a sample of over 550 Galactic B and O-type stars, the MiMeS project has derived the basic characteristics of magnetism in hot, massive stars. Herein we report preliminary results.

Titanium (IV) oxide, TiO2, has been the object of intense scrutiny for energy applications. TiO2 is inexpensive, non-toxic, and has excellent corrosion resistance when exposed to electrolytes. A major drawback preventing the widespread use TiO2 for photolysis is its relatively large band gap of ∼3eV. Only light with wavelengths shorter than 400 nm, which is in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum, has sufficient energy to be absorbed. Less than 14 percent of the solar irradiation reaching the earth’s surface has energy exceeding this band gap. Adding dopants such as transition metals has long been used to reduce the gap and increase photocatalytic activity by accessing the visible part of the solar spectrum. The degree to which the band gap is reduced using transition metals depends in part on the overlap of the d-orbitals of the transition metals with the oxygen p-orbitals. Therefore, doping with anions such as nitrogen to modify the cation-anion orbital overlap is another approach to reduce the gap. Recent studies suggest that using a combination of transition metals and nitrogen as dopants is more effective at introducing intermediate states within the band gap, effectively narrowing it. Here we report the synthesis of mesoporous TiO2 spheres, co-doped with transition metals and nitrogen that exhibit a nearly flat absorbance response across the visible spectrum extending into the near infrared.

We review the interaction in intermediate and high mass stars between their evolution and magnetic and chemical properties. We describe the theory of Ap-star ‘fossil’ fields, before touching on the expected secular diffusive processes which give rise to evolution of the field. We then present recent results from a spectropolarimetric survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars, showing that magnetic fields of the kind seen on the main-sequence already exist during the pre-main sequence phase, in agreement with fossil field theory, and that the origin of the slow rotation of Ap/Bp stars also lies early in the pre-main sequence evolution; we also present results confirming a lack of stars with fields below a few hundred gauss. We then seek which macroscopic motions compete with atomic diffusion in determining the surface abundances of AmFm stars. While turbulent transport and mass loss, in competition with atomic diffusion, are both able to explain observed surface abundances, the interior abundance distribution is different enough to potentially lead to a test using asterosismology. Finally we review progress on the turbulence-driving and mixing processes in stellar radiative zones.

Research in roAp stars is being vigorously pursued, both theoretically and observationally by many groups. We report the discovery of a 21-min period, luminous roAp star, HD 116114. Longer periods for more luminous stars have been predicted theoretically and this is the first discovery of such a star. We discuss a model for the blue-to-red line profile variability observed in some roAp stars involving a shock wave high in the atmosphere of roAp stars, yet show that the H$\alpha$ line in 33 Lib has the blue-to-red-to-blue line profile variability expected for subsonic dipolar pulsation concentrated towards the pulsation pole. Glugoides intestinalis, Microsporidium sp., Ordospora colligata, Gurleya vavrai, Larssonia obtusa and Flabelliforma magnivora are microsporidian parasites of planctonic freshwater crustaceans Daphnia spp. We performed a phylogenetic analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA which revealed their positions as polyphyletic. G. intestinalis, Microsporidium sp. and O. colligata, which are horizontally transmitted gut parasites with small spores and low virulence, group with different lineages. G. intestinalis is related to 2 microsporidia infecting lepidopterans and to Vittaforma corneae, which has been described as a human pathogen. It is thought that V. corneae may have an invertebrate as its natural host. Microsporidium sp. is a relative of the genera Enterocytozoon and Nucleospora, pathogens of man and fish respectively. O. colligata is the first species found to be closely related to the genus Encephalitozoon, which is comprised of 3 species that are parasites of homeothermic vertebrates. G. vavrai and L. obtusa are sister taxa that branch close to the Amblyosporidae, the only microsporidia with known intermediate hosts. This finding supports the presumption of secondary hosts for G. vavrai and L. obtusa, as it has not been possible to maintain these species in Daphnia in the laboratory. F. magnivora roots deep at the base of the phylum microsporidia with no close relative found so far.

We investigated the dependence of critical current density (Jc) on thickness of Yba2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films grown by pulsed laser deposition on (100) SrTiO3 (STO) and on rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS). The thickness of YBCO films varied from 0.19 to 3 μm. The highest Jcs of 5.3 and 2.6 MA/cm2 at 77 K, self-field were obtained for 0.19-μm YBCO films on STO and RABiTS, respectively. Jc was found to decrease exponentially with YBCO thickness on both substrates. However, the results suggest different mechanisms are responsible for the Jc reduction in the two cases. On STO, growth of a-axis grains within c-axis films and broadening of the in-plane texture were observed in thick films. On RABiTS, degradation in cube texture as well as development of a porous surface morphology were found to correlate with film thickness.

Synthetic zirconolite (CaZrTi2O7) doped with rare earth elements (REEs) and Hf has been subjected to corrosion tests in a closed system at elevated temperature and pressure in fluids with various compositions. Together with previous studies, the results indicate only a very weak corrosion below 250°C at a pressure of 50 MPa. Above that temperature and up to 500°C zirconolite suffers from relatively rapid corrosion and, depending on the fluid composition, it may be covered by various secondary phases. Above 500°C in Na-rich fluids, zirconolite is replaced by perovskiteand calzirtite (nominally CaTiO3 and Ca2r5Ti2O16, respectively), but theREEs and Hf (acting as actinide analogues and/or neutron absorbers) are almost quantitatively incorporated into the secondary phases. The breakdown of zirconolite and its replacement by other phases in the laboratory tests are comparable to reactions observed in natural systems. Additional experiments with U-doped zirconolite revealed differences in the behavior of the used actinide analogues (Nd, Ce, Gd)and U during corrosion. The results of this study, together with observations on natural samples, strongly support the use of zirconolite-based ceramic waste forms for actinide-rich wastes.

Microlite, a Ta-rich member of the pyrochlore group, occurs in 440 Ma old lithium pegmatites in Mozambique and exhibits a pronounced growth zoning, with a U-free core surrounded by a U-rich rim (UO2 ≤ 17 wt%). Subsequent to the uplift of the host rock, microlite was subjected to intense low-temperature alteration during which Na, Ca and F were leached from the microlite crystals. This alteration, resulting from exposure to tropical conditions, also led to localized redistribution of radiogenic Pb (formation of plumbomicrolite) and to hydration of microlite, but U remained immobile. The low-temperature alteration effects are only observed in the U-rich rim, which is characterized by abundant microfractures. As demonstrated by electron diffraction images and powder X-ray patterns, the U-rich rim is largely metamict. Our investigation illustrates the importance of natural analogues in evaluating the durability of pyrochlore-based nuclear waste-form materials over geologic time.

Uranium-rich microlite, a pyrochlore-group mineral, occurs in 440 Ma old lithium pegmatites of the Mozambique Belt in East Africa. Microlite exhibits a pronounced growth zoning, with a U-free core surrounded by a U-rich rim (UO2 up to 17 wt.%). The core exhibits conjugate sets of straight cracks (cleavage planes) which provided pathways for a late-stage U-enriched pegmatitic fluid which interacted with the U-free microlite to produce a distinct U enrichment along the cracks and led to the formation of the U-rich rim. Following the stage of U incorporation into microlite, a second generation of hydrothermal fluids deposited mica along the cleavage planes. Subsequent to these two hydrothermal stages, the host rock was uplifted and subjected to intense low-temperature alteration during which Na, Ca and F were leached from the microlite crystals. This alteration also led to a hydration of microlite, but there is no evidence of U loss. These low-temperature alteration effects were only observed in the U-rich rim which is characterized by a large number of irregular cracks which are most probably the result of metamictization, as indicated by electron diffraction images and powder X-ray patterns.

Corrosion of zirconolite in a closed system at elevated temperature and pressure for various fluid compositions has been investigated by several analytical techniques. Together with previous studies, the results indicate a weak corrosion below 250° C at 5 MPa, Above 400° C, secondary TiO2 phases crystallize in acidic and neutral fluids on the corroded surfaces and in near-surface pores, At 550° C and above, zirconolite starts to be replaced by perovskite and “calzirtite” in basic fluids. Our results indicate that zirconolite is reasonably durable in acidic. neutral and basic fluids up to 500° C and 50 MPa which corresponds to deep borehole conditions.

Perovskite and calzirtite exhibit an unusual crystal chemistry as determined by transmission electron microscopy and microanalysis.

Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) films were fabricated using laser ablation of YBCO onto rolling-assisted-biaxially-textured-substrates (RABiTS) at a temperature of 650°C. The configuration of the sample was YBCO/YSZ/CeO/Ni. The CeO2 and YSZ buffer layers were deposited using electron-beam evaporation and sputtering, respectively. Both of these techniques are considered to be industrially scalable. SEM images of the YBCO reveal a range of structures ranging from jumbled a-axis to dense c-axis morphologies depending upon the deposition conditions. X-ray θ-2θ scans show a similar c-axis dependence on the deposition conditions.

Much of the conductor development effort in the last decade has focused on optimizing the processing of (Bi, Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox oxide-powder-in-tube conductors and (Bi, Pb)2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi-2212) and TlBa2Ca2Cu3Ox thick film conductors. It is demonstrated that in each of these conductors, critical current densities are dictated by the grain boundary misorientation distributions (GBMD's). Percolative networks of low-angle boundaries with fractions consistent with the active cross-sectional area of the conductor exist in each of these conductors. Further enhancements in the properties require increased numbers of small-angle grain boundaries. Given the processing methods used to fabricate these materials, no clear route employing a simple modification of the established processing method is apparent. To address this need, conductors with controlled or predetermined GBMD's are necessary. Development of biaxial texture appears to be the only possible way to increase the number of small-angle boundaries in a practical and controllable manner. We summarize in this paper recent results obtained on epitaxial superconducting films on rolling-assisted-biaxially-textured-substrates (RABiTS). This technique uses well established, industrially scalable, thermomechanical processes to impart a strong biaxial texture to a base metal. This is followed by vapor deposition of epitaxial buffer layers (metal and/or ceramic) to yield structurally and chemically compatible surfaces. Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7–δ films grown using laser ablation on such substrates have critical current densities exceeding 106 A/cm2 at 77 K in zero field and have a field dependence similar to epitaxial films on single crystal ceramic substrates. Deposited conductors made using this technique offer a potential route for the fabrication of the next generation high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire capable of carrying high currents in high magnetic fields and at elevated temperatures.

Inelastic incoherent neutron-scattering spectra of cis-, trans- and Na-doped polyacety-lene are presented. The experiments were performed with time-of-flight and filter-analyzer spectrometers on stretch-oriented samples such that the polarization of vibrational modes could also be determined.
