Emergency department (ED) staff in Belgium is simultaneously involved in patient care in the ED and in prehospital interventions as part of a Mobile Medical Team (MMT) or a Paramedic Intervention Team (PIT). There is a growing concern that the MMT is often over-qualified for the prehospital interventions they are dispatched to, while their absence from the ED results in insufficient human resources there.

The current study aims to investigate whether this perception is correct in the EDs of two different regions, while also examining the differences between a two-tiered (2T) and a three-tiered (3T) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) region.

A specially developed and pre-tested registration form was completed by physicians and nurses before and after each MMT intervention. The form included information on the composition of the MMT, the perceived need for MMT intervention pre-departure from the ED, the subjective appreciation of the need for the MMT after an intervention, and the therapeutic intervention(s) performed, in order to obtain a more objective appreciation of the actual need for an MMT. Data from a 2T and a 3T region were analyzed to rate the appropriateness of the interventions.

Although the 2T and 3T regions showed differences regarding MMT composition, dispatching, and logistics, the outcome of the study was identical in both regions. Before the intervention, physicians and nurses estimated that the MMT intervention would not be necessary in 37.7% of cases. However, following the intervention, it was subjectively deemed unnecessary in 65.7% of cases. Based on therapeutic interventions performed, the MMT was viewed as being over-qualified for carrying these out in 85.6% of cases. Post-intervention, the initial prediction that the MMT was over-qualified for the call was confirmed by the same physicians and nurses in 87.6% of cases, whilst their prediction was correct in 92.8% of cases in terms of the intervention that was carried out.

In two different Belgian regions, the MMT is over-qualified in a vast majority of interventions. Physicians and nurses within the MMT can generally already predict that the MMT is over-qualified when leaving the ED. These findings suggest that there may be significant opportunities to improve the efficacy of human resources in the ED once there are less interventions carried out by an over-qualified MMT.

Team dynamics and nontechnical skills in general are crucial for emergency medical teams (EMT). No study has ever examined these important issues during a real mission in the field. This study aimed to better investigate team dynamics and nontechnical skills for EMTs; it tried to understand if a real mission, when the people are obliged to work together for the first time, without a prior specific training focused on teamwork, is enough or not to work as an effective team in the field.

The study is designed as a pre-test/post-test survey study, and it collected data from 51 people deployed to Mozambique in 2019. Three indexes (the self-efficacy (SE), the teamwork (TW), and the overall team’s performance (TW12)) were calculated as the average value of the rating given by all the participants. Open text feedback was also collected.

A positive trend was observed comparing the “post” data to the “pre” data, but results did not show a statistical significance, with the only exception of stratified analyses showing a P-value less than 0.05 for SE and TW12 for some categories.

According to the study findings, humanitarian workers feel good but not at their best; training programs focused on team dynamics can be really useful to improve self-confidence of people leaving for a mission.

An under-developed and fragmented prehospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system is a major obstacle to the timely care of emergency patients. Insufficient emphasis on prehospital emergency systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) currently causes a substantial number of avoidable deaths from time-sensitive illnesses, highlighting a critical need for improved prehospital emergency care systems. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to assess the prehospital emergency care services across LMICs.

This systematic review used four electronic databases, namely: PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and SCOPUS, to search for published reports on prehospital emergency medical care in LMICs. Only peer-reviewed studies published in English language from January 1, 2010 through November 1, 2022 were included in the review. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) and Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist were used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. Further, the protocol of this systematic review has been registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (Ref: CRD42022371936) and has been conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Of the 4,909 identified studies, a total of 87 studies met the inclusion criteria and were therefore included in the review. Prehospital emergency care structure, transport care, prehospital times, health outcomes, quality of information exchange, and patient satisfaction were the most reported outcomes in the considered studies.

The prehospital care system in LMICs is fragmented and uncoordinated, lacking trained medical personnel and first responders, inadequate basic materials, and substandard infrastructure.

A Mass Casualty Incident response (MCI) full scale exercise (FSEx) assures MCI first responder (FR) competencies. Simulation and serious gaming platforms (Simulation) have been considered to achieve and maintain FR competencies. The translational science (TS) T0 question was asked: how can FRs achieve similar MCI competencies as a FSEx through the use of MCI simulation exercises?

T1 stage (Scoping Review): PRISMA-ScR was conducted to develop statements for the T2 stage modified Delphi (mD) study. 1320 reference titles and abstracts were reviewed with 215 full articles progressing for full review leading to 97 undergoing data extraction.

T2 stage (mD study): Selected experts were presented with 27 statements derived from T1 data with instruction to rank each statement on a 7-point linear numeric scale, where 1 = disagree and 7 = agree. Consensus amongst experts was defined as a standard deviation ≤ 1.0.

After 3 mD rounds, 19 statements attained consensus and 8 did not attain consensus.

MCI simulation exercises can be developed to achieve similar competencies as FSEx by incorporating the 19 statements that attained consensus through the TS stages of a scoping review (T1) and mD study (T2), and continuing to T3 implementation, and then T4 evaluation stages.

In response to the global upward trend of humanitarian emergencies, the humanitarian health workforce has grown substantially in the last decades. Still, humanitarian education and training programs are limited in availability, geographical locations, and teaching methods, and are too expensive for local respondents. To address these gaps, an e-learning tool for humanitarian public health has been developed and evaluated.

Action research was used to develop the e-Learning tool. Rapid prototyping–a modified analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model, was used to identify the content and instructional design. This iterative process involved consultations and feedback from public health and disaster medicine instructors and students at different levels and training programs from within and outside CRIMEDIM. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Quantitative data were appropriately summarized. Pre/post-test change in knowledge score was tested with paired t-test.

Although different levels of training are needed, targeting health professionals at the entry-level in the humanitarian field is identified as a priority. Scenario-based e-Simulation covers health needs assessment, essential health services, communicable diseases standards, and the health system was developed and evaluated. Trainees were highly satisfied by the clear objectives, the realism of the simulated scenarios, quizzes, and interactivity. In the 1-7 numerical scale, the median for overall experience satisfaction was 6.3 (IQR=5.3-7, N=35). The mean of the post-test score was 7.71, which was significantly higher than the mean of the pre-test score of 5.88. The large effect size of 1.179 indicates the training effectiveness. Poor internet was identified as a potential barrier to delivering the training.

This participatory study resulted in the development of effective Scenario-based e-Simulation. Offline mode of training will be adapted for trainees with poor internet connection settings. Successful factors in instructional design will be used to inform the development of advanced training in the field.

Sierra Leone, one of the countries with the highest maternal and perinatal mortality in the world, launched its first National Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) in 2018. We carried out a countrywide assessment to analyze NEMS operational times for obstetric emergencies with access to timely essential surgery within 2 hours. Moreover, we evaluated the relationship between operational times and maternal and perinatal mortality.

We collected prehospital data of 6,387 obstetric emergency referrals from primary health units to hospital facilities between June 2019 and May 2020 and we estimated the proportion of referrals with a prehospital time (PT) within 2 hours. The association between PT and mortality was investigated using Poisson regression models for binary data.

At the national level, the proportion of emergency obstetric referrals with a PT within 2 hours was 58.5% (95% CI 56.9% to 60.1%) during the rainy season and 61.4% (95% CI 59.5% to 63.2%) during the dry season. Results were substantially different between districts, with the capital city of Freetown reporting more than 90% of referrals within the benchmark and some rural districts less than 40%. Risk of maternal death at 60, 120, and 180 min of PT was 1.8%, 3.8%, and 4.3%, respectively. Corresponding figures for perinatal mortality were 16%, 18%, and 25%.

NEMS operational times for obstetric emergencies in Sierra Leone vary greatly and referral transports in rural areas struggle to reach essential surgery within two hours. Maternal and perinatal risk of death increased concurrently with operational times, even beyond the two-hour target, therefore, any reduction of the time to reach the hospital may translate into improved patient outcomes.

Mass gathering events (MGE), can attract sufficient attendees to strain the planning and response resources of the host community, state, or nation, thereby delaying the response to emergencies. The organization of such a MGE can be even more problematic when the event continues across much of downtown (including hospitals) and makes some parts of the city inaccessible. The aim of this study was describing the health care management of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, July 6-7th, 2019. On both days, the stages drew crowds of 300,000 attendees, adding a quarter of the regular number of inhabitants of Brussels (1,2 million) and closing parts of downtown Brussels.

Data were retrospectively collected from the in-event health services (coordinated by the University Hospital Brussels). Data regarding medical interventions, as well as data generated by the advanced medical posts (AMP) were recorded and handed to us after anonymization. For analysis, patients were divided into two groups: those seen by first-aid responders and paramedics (triage code green) and those seen and treated by health professionals (emergency nurses and physicians) (triage codes yellow or red).

During the event, three AMPs were established along the route of the stage as were six ambulances, three mobile medical crews (one emergency nurse and one physician), and seven mobile first aid teams. Over the two days, 84 patients were seen; 80 green codes (95,2%), 3 yellow (3,6%), and one red (1,2%) resulting in a patient presentation rate of 0.28/1,000. In total eight patients were transported to hospital for further diagnosis and treatment (ambulance transfer rate: 0.02/1,000).

In-event health services for this event proved adequate according to the number of attendees and the severity of the patients. No hospital reported disruptions to their standard operational capacity.

With the publication of the Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (H-EDRM) Framework in 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the need for disaster preparedness in all sectors of the health system, including primary health care (PHC). PHC disaster preparedness plays a crucial role in guaranteeing continuity of care and responding to the health needs of vulnerable populations during disasters. While this is universally acknowledged as an important component of disaster management (DM), there is still a severe paucity of scholarship addressing how to practically ensure that a PHC system is prepared for disasters. The objective of this study is to propose a new framework that describes key characteristics for PHC disaster preparedness and lays the groundwork to deliver operational recommendations to assess and improve PHC disaster preparedness.

A systematic literature review including the following online scientific databases was performed: Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline, National Library of Medicine, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Gray literature was also found by searching in: Trove, Mednar, and OpenGray. A total of 145 records were analyzed.

Twenty-five characteristics that contribute to a well-prepared PHC system were identified and categorized according to the WHO Health System Building Blocks to form a new PHC disaster preparedness framework.

The findings will contribute to the elaboration of a set of guidelines for PHC systems to follow in order to assess and boost their disaster preparedness. This will hopefully help to raise awareness among international policymakers and health practitioners on the importance to design interventions that integrate PHC into overall DM strategies, as well as to assess the preparedness of PHC systems in different political, developmental, and cultural contexts. The proposed framework is currently being used by our research group as groundwork for the creation of an assessment tool for evaluating all-hazards preparedness at the PHC level.

Mass gathering events (MGE), organized or unplanned, can attract sufficient attendees to strain the planning and response resources of the host community, state, or nation, thereby delaying the response to emergencies. MGEs also have the potential to cause a mass casualty incident. But MGE can also lead to improvements in the organization of local emergency medical services or public health that form the legacy of that MGE. Emergency medical teams (EMTs) could be deployed to ensure health security as a surge in MGE. But these EMTs should be built on guiding principles and core standards. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no standards on medical planning and response during any type of MGE (e.g., sports, religious, or festivals).

A systematic review was performed in accordance with current guidelines, using six databases, namely Medline (via the PubMed interface), Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL, as well as literature sourced by Google Scholar and The Journal of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine. Studies published on minimum standards or medical planning and response during MGE from 2002-2022, written in English, were selected and assessed for eligibility by two reviewers.

From a total of 20,159 articles, 138 were screened, and 32 were assessed for eligibility. Two were only abstracts, and the others did not contain any description of minimal standards available for medical planning or response in different types of MGE.

No studies were found that describe any form of standards for medical planning and the response of emergency medical teams in different types of mass gathering events (e.g., sports, religious, festivals). There is a need for minimum standards for emergency medical teams deploying as a surge in mass gathering events.

Electronic dance music festivals (EDMF) are a unique subset of music mass gatherings. Besides the already more significant burden on in-event health services (IEHS) that comes with these festivals, EDMF are also known for their illicit drug use, with their attendees at high risk for illegal drug use.

Encounter data from all patients seen and treated by IEHS at an annual outdoor multi-day EDMF (focused on hardstyle dance music) in August 2019 were analyzed. Based on the chief complaint, and medical and nursing notes, a list was consolidated into 31 reasons for the consultation of IEHS. The most common reasons for consulting IEHS were analyzed.

This outdoor hardstyle dance event had 30,000 attendees, of which 580 visited IEHS. This resulted in a patient presentation rate of 19.3/1,000 attendees. Four were transported to the hospital (transport to hospital rate: 0.13/1,000 attendees). The most prevalent reason to consult IEHS were lacerations and abrasions (9.66%), sprains (9.48%), and headaches (7.59%). Only 4.83% of all patients (n = 12) presented with adverse effects of illicit drug use. Of interest is that twelve patients with intoxications (42.86% of all intoxicated patients) were initially triaged as life-threatening, mainly due to obstructed airways. Only one of these twelve needed endotracheal intubation and was transported to the hospital. All other intoxicated patients returned to the event. No direct relationship between gender and the chief complaint was found.

Besides typical patient presentations, illicit drug use with its adverse effects can seriously impact IEHS. These results confirm the need for highly trained (Advanced life support level) IEHS at EDMF. Competent IEHS can mitigate the burden of these events on regular EMS.

Ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) are health conditions for which appropriate primary care intervention could prevent hospital admission. ACSC hospitalization rates are a well established parameter for assessing the performance of primary health care (PHC). Although this indicator has been extensively used to monitor the performance of PHC systems in peacetime, its consideration during disasters has been neglected. The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged the importance of PHC in guaranteeing continuity of care during and after a disaster for avoiding negative health outcomes.

A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the extent and nature of research activity on the use of ACSCs during disasters, with an eye toward finding innovative ways to assess the level of PHC function at times of crisis. Online databases were searched to identify papers.

A final list of nine publications was retrieved. The analysis of the reviewed articles confirmed that ACSCs can serve as a useful indicator of PHC performance during disasters, with several caveats that must be considered.

The reviewed articles cover several disaster scenarios and a wide variety of methodologies showing the connection between ACSCs and health system performance. The strengths and weaknesses of using different methodologies are explored and recommendations are given for using ACSCs to assess PHC performance during disasters.

A Mass Casualty Incident response (MCI) full scale exercise (FSEx) assures MCI first responder competencies. Simulation and serious gaming platforms (Simulation) have been considered to achieve and maintain first responder competencies with the challenge of the FSEx. The translational science (TS) T0 question: How can students achieve similar MCI competencies through the use of simulation MCI exercises as with a FSEx?

Initial TS phase T1: Scoping Review

A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Review was conducted to develop statements for the TS second phase T2 modified Delphi study. 1320 reference titles and abstracts were reviewed with 215 full articles progressing for full review leading to 97 undergoing data extraction.

Second TS stage T2: modified Delphi study

The database was analyzed and initial draft statements were created. Selected modified Delphi experts were presented with 27 statements with instructions to rank each statement on a seven-point linear numeric scale, where 1 = disagree and 7 = agree. Consensus amongst experts was defined as a standard deviation ≤1.0.

After three modified Delphi rounds 19 statements attained consensus and eight did not attain a consensus.

The modified Delphi experts agreed that the simultaneous integration of individual duty and incident management skills should be incorporated into simulation MCI exercise design to achieve competencies depending on high physical fidelity to develop the individual’s manual abilities, as well as high conceptual fidelity, to develop the individual’s clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills. MCI simulation exercises can be developed to achieve similar competencies as FSExs incorporating the 19 statements that attained consensus through the TS phases of a scoping review (T1) and modified Delphi study (T2). The TS process should continue with development of these exercises in the T3 implementation stage and then evaluated in the T4 stage.

Heatwaves are the leading weather-related causes of deaths globally. Since the mid 20th century, the frequency and intensity of heatwaves has increased with recent reports projecting a substantial warming in temperature extremes by the end of the 21st century.

In this cross-sectional study, we attempted to assess public perception and knowledge on heatwaves. Data was collected across Pakistan among a sample of people aged 18 years and above using an online survey questionnaire. Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs were used to assess risk perception using a total of 14 statements while knowledge was measured using 12 statements. The Unadjusted Odd Ratio (UOR) and Adjusted Odd Ratio (AOR) of 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were employed through binary logistic regression. A total of twelve variables were included in the model (11 categorical and 1 continuous).

Out of the 686 participants, the majority of the people (57.73) showed high heatwaves risk perception and a high level of heatwave knowledge (59.91). The results of the multivariate regression model (AOR) showed that participants within the Secondary and/or higher Secondary (Grade 9th to Grade 12th) were less likely (OR=0.304) perceiving heatwaves risk compared to the reference group (Basic/Elementary Level i.e., (Grade 1st to Grade 8th)). As the number of participants who lives with others and who heard about heatwaves increases, the participants are more likely to perceive high heatwaves risk. For instance, participants who lives with others and have heard about heatwaves perceived heatwaves risk 1.982 and 1.816 times higher respectively than those who live alone and those who have not heard about heatwaves before.

HBM can be useful in designing interventions aimed at increasing people’s adaptive behaviors during heat waves. This study provides useful insights to the policymakers across Pakistan in understanding the public’s perception that can lead to informed decision-making.

The humanitarian health field has grown rapidly in the last decades. However, education and training programs are still limited in number, especially where it is needed most. Additionally, the cost of the training is too expensive for local humanitarian health respondents. If developed appropriately, E-Learning can potentially address these gaps.

Develop an effective E-Learning tool for humanitarian public health training.

The tool was developed using an institutional-based, action research method. Rapid prototyping - a modified analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model - was used to identify the content and instructional design. This iterative process involved consultations and feedback from public health and disaster medicine instructors and students at different levels and training programs. Different methods were used to collect and analyze data, such as literature and courses reviews, observation, interviews, and questionnaires.

Four scenario-based E-Simulations - targeting entry-level humanitarian health professionals - were developed and piloted based on identified needs. Formative evaluation clarified training objectives and structure. Trainees were satisfied by the simulated scenario, interactivity, questions, and timely feedback. Poor internet was identified as a potential barrier to delivering the training in the humanitarian context.

Clear objectives and quality content are the prerequisites for training effectiveness. Yet, instructional design is a critical element that can enhance training effectiveness. The tool’s offline mode is being adapted to improve access in poor internet connection settings. A summative evaluation will be conducted to measure the training’s effectiveness. Furthermore, successful factors in instructional design will be used to inform the development of advanced training in the field.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has revealed a gap in disaster preparedness of health workers globally. Disaster medicine education is a key element to fill this gap.

This study evaluated the involvement of the European Master in Disaster Medicine (EMDM) Alumni in the current COVID-19 pandemic response and their self-perceived value of the EMDM educational program in accomplishing their tasks during the disaster.

An online survey targeting the EMDM Alumni was conducted from January through March 2021. Quantitative data were described using percentages or means, as appropriate, while qualitative data were categorized using deductive thematic analysis.

In total, 259 Alumni completed the survey. Most of the Alumni (88.03%; standard error of the proportion [SEp] = 0.02) participated directly in the COVID-19 pandemic response – nationally or internationally – with different roles and responsibilities at different levels and sectors. Around 25% of the Alumni reported an increase in their tasks and responsibilities due to COVID-19 response, but few worked beyond their main specialization (5.26%) or expertise (2.19%). Moreover, Alumni shifted their role from clinical practice to managerial, public health, education and training, and policymaking roles during COVID-19 (P <.001). Participants believed that the EMDM study program and the competencies acquired during the course were relevant and useful to perform their tasks during the COVID-19 pandemic response (mean = 5.26; 5.17 standard error of the mean [SEM] = 0.108, 0.107), respectively. Around 36% (SEp = 0.03) of the participants deemed that some contents were not sufficient for COVID-19 response.

Most of the EMDM Alumni were involved in the COVID-19 pandemic response, playing diverse roles with an increased level of responsibility compared to those played before the pandemic. Moreover, the Alumni perceived the EMDM curriculum as relevant for accomplishing their tasks. However, they also reported gaps within the curriculum, especially topics related to outbreak and pandemic response. The findings of the study stress the value of investing in disaster medicine education world-wide and of pushing to update and standardize post-graduate disaster medicine curricula.

Asymmetric warfare and the reaction to its threats have implications in the way far-forward medical assistance is provided in such settings. Investments in far-forward emergency resuscitation and stabilization can contribute to saving lives and increase the resilience of health systems. Thus, it is proposed to extend the use of the Haddon Matrix to determine a set of strategies to better understand and prioritize activities to prepare for and set-up frontline care in the form of Trauma Stabilization Points (TSPs).

An expert consensus methodology was used to achieve the research aim. A small subject matter experts’ group was convened to create and validate the content of the Haddon Matrix.

The result of the expert group consultations presented an overview of TSP Preparedness and Operational Readiness activities within a Haddon Matrix framework. Main strategies to be adopted within the cycle from pre- to post-event had been identified and presented considering the identified opportunities in the context of the possibility of implementation. Of particular importance was the revision of a curriculum that fits the civilian medical system and facilitates its adaptation to the context and available resources.

The new framework to enhance frontline care preparedness and response using the Haddon Matrix facilitated the identification of a set of strategies to support frontline health care workers in a more efficient manner. Since the existing approach and tools are insufficient for modern warfare, additional research is needed.

Disasters may have major impacts to mental health and to the utilization of mental health services (MHS). Moreover, these effects may be worsened by the preclusion of access to basic services following the event. The aim of this study is to evaluate the utilization of public MHS by the population that suffered water supply interruption following the Mariana Dam Failure in Brazil, 2015.

We conducted an Interrupted Time Series analyzing secondary health data from the municipalities that faced water supply interruption, comparing it to data from the other municipalities of Minas Gerais state.

We found a higher immediate (RR: 1.78; 95% CI: 1.25–2.53) and gradual (RR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.03–1.06) change in the rate of mental health visits (MHV) in the affected population following the event, whereas there was an immediate fall (RR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.29–0.59) followed by a higher gradual increase (RR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.02–1.06) in the rate of hospital admissions (HA) in the affected population.

The results suggest that there was an increase in the utilization of public MHS by the population that suffered water supply interruption following the disaster.

Nepal female community health volunteers (FCHVs) were the first available health personnel in communities during the 2015 Nepal earthquakes. This study explored the facilitating factors and barriers of the FCHVs during health emergencies.

In-depth interviews with 24 FCHVs and 4 health managers from 2 districts in Nepal (Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk) were conducted using semi-structured interview guides. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis methods.

FCHVs were the first responders to provide services after the earthquakes and were well accepted by the local communities. Different models of supervision existed, and differences in the workload and remuneration offered to FCHVs were described. A wide range of disaster-related knowledge and skills were required by FCHVs, and lack of prior training was an issue for some respondents. Furthermore, lack of access to adequate medical supplies was a major barrier for FCHVs in the 2015 earthquakes. The 5 identified themes were discussed.

Providing regular disaster response training for FCHVs and strong leadership from the public sector with sustained investments will be essential for increasing the capacities of community health workforces to prepare for and reduce the impacts of future health emergencies in resource-poor settings.

Education and training programs are critical to achieve personnel capacity building and professionalization in the rapidly growing humanitarian health sector. Thus, this study aimed to describe the status of humanitarian health education and training programs world-wide.

A web-based analysis was conducted to identify the available humanitarian health programs. The following characteristics of the training programs were described: geographical location, target audience, prerequisite, qualification, curriculum, content, length, modality of delivery, teaching and assessment methods, and tuition fee.

The search identified a total number of 142 training programs, most of them available in few countries of the global North. Only seven percent of the identified programs qualified for a master’s degree in humanitarian health. Public health was the most identified content (47.2%). Approximately one-half of the training programs (50.7%) were delivered face-to-face. Theoretical knowledge was the most common method used for teaching and assessment. The duration of the training and tuition fees were different for different programs and qualifications, while target audience, prerequisite, and curriculum design were often vaguely described or missing.

The study shows a global inequality in access to humanitarian health training programs due to financial and geographical constraints. The study also reveals gaps in program contents, as well as teaching and assessment methods, all issues that could be addressed by developing cost-effective e-learning and online simulation programs. Lastly, the data from this study provide a learning tool that can be used by humanitarian health educators and training centers to further define and standardize the requirements and competencies of humanitarian health professionals.
