This article reviews the advancements and prospects of liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and analysis methods in understanding the nucleation, growth, etching, and assembly dynamics of nanocrystals. The bonding of atoms into nanoscale crystallites produces materials with nonadditive properties unique to their size and geometry. The recent application of in situ liquid cell TEM to nanocrystal development has initiated a paradigm shift, (1) from trial-and-error synthesis to a mechanistic understanding of the “synthetic reactions” responsible for the emergence of crystallites from a disordered soup of reactive species (e.g., ions, atoms, molecules) and shape-defined growth or etching; and (2) from post-processing characterization of the nanocrystals’ superlattice assemblies to in situ imaging and mapping of the fundamental interactions and energy landscape governing their collective phase behaviors. Imaging nanocrystal formation and assembly processes on the single-particle level in solution immediately impacts many existing fields, including materials science, nanochemistry, colloidal science, biology, environmental science, electrochemistry, mineralization, soft condensed-matter physics, and device fabrication.

The effects of polymer substrates on the interfacial structure and the thermal stability of Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) thin films were investigated. The GZO thin films were deposited on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrates by rf-magnetron sputtering at room temperature, and thermal stability tests of the GZO thin films on the polymer substrates were performed at 150°C up to 8 h in air. Electrical and structural characterizations of the GZO thin films on the PET and the PEN substrates were carried out, and the origins of the stable interfacial structure and the improved thermal stability of the GZO thin film on the PEN substrate were discussed.

We give a method for obtaining infinitely many framed knots which represent a diffeomorphic 4-manifold. We also study a relationship between the n-shake genus and the 4-ball genus of a knot. Furthermore we give a construction of homotopy 4-spheres from a slice knot with unknotting number one.

Both luminous efficiency and lifetime in blue fluorescence organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) have been improved by modified HTMs with higher LUMO energy levels. The LUMO energy levels of HTM were increased by modifying substituent in HTM molecules. Two HTMs containing ortho and meta biphenyl substituent and one HTM containing thiophene substituent were synthesized via palladium catalyzed amine coupling reactions to compare with a para biphenyl substituent HTM-1 as a standard molecule. According to TDDFT calculations, these three modified HTMs showed 0.05-0.15 eV higher LUMO energy levels compared to the para biphenyl substituent HTM-1. The luminous efficiency and the lifetime (LT90) of OLEDs using HTM-2 at 500 cd/m2 have been enhanced up to 20 % and 52 %, respectively, compared to the standard device using HTM-1.

We investigated the pressure dependence of the inductive coupled plasma (ICP) oxidation on the electrical characteristics of the thin oxide films. Activation energies and electron temperatures with different pressures were estimated. To demonstrate the pressure effect on the plasma oxide quality, simple N type metal-oxide-semiconductor (NMOS) transistors were fabricated and investigated in a few electrical properties. At higher pressure than 200mTorr, plasma oxide has a slightly higher on-current and a lower interfacial trap density. The on-current gain seems to be related to the field mobility increase and the lower defective interface to the electron temperature during oxidation.

We evaluated the effects of the two main kiwifruit cultivars (gold kiwifruit (GOK) and green kiwifruit (GRK)) and their active phenolic compound, quercetin, on H2O2-induced inhibition of gap-junction intercellular communication (GJIC) in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells. We found that both GOK and GRK protect WB-F344 cells from H2O2-induced inhibition of GJIC. The extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2)–connexin 43 (Cx43) signalling pathway is crucial for the regulation of GJIC, and both GOK and GRK blocked the H2O2-induced phosphorylation of Cx43 and ERK1/2 in WB-F344 cells. Quercetin alone attenuated the H2O2-mediated ERK1/2–Cx43 signalling pathway and consequently reversed H2O2-mediated inhibition of GJIC in WB-F344 cells. A free radical-scavenging assay using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl showed that the scavenging activity of quercetin was higher than that of a synthetic antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene, per mol, suggesting that the chemopreventive effect of quercetin on H2O2-mediated inhibition of ERK1/2–Cx43 signalling and GJIC may be mediated through its free radical-scavenging activity. Since the carcinogenicity of reactive oxygen species such as H2O2 is attributable to the inhibition of GJIC, GOK, GRK and quercetin may have chemopreventive potential by preventing the inhibition of GJIC.

Recently, non-volatile polymer memories have been researched as a next generation of non-volatile memory because of its simple structure and easy fabrication process. We found that two types of non-volatile polymer memory have different I-V behavior. First Polymer non-volatile memory with metal / oxide / polymer / metal structure But Polymer non-volatile memory embedded Au Nano-crystal shows different I-V behavior. Polymer non-volatile memory shows NDR(Negative Differential Resistance) Region after threshold voltage and low to high current path at increasing positive and negative bias. We can observe NDR(Negative Differential Resistance) Region on Polymer non-volatile memory embedded Au Nano crystal. We fabricated devices three different type to confirm difference Polymer non-volatile memory with metal / polymer / metal structure, metal / oxide / polymer / metal structure and Au nano-crystal embedded Polymer non-volatile memory. First we fabricated Polymer non-volatile memory with metal / PVK(Poly-n-vinyl carbarzole) / metal structure. first type of device shows ohmic I-V behavior. Second type of polymer non-volatile memory has oxide layer between metal and polymer layer. Oxide layer made by O2 plasma treatment(100W RF power, 100SCCM O2 gas flow) after metal layer deposited. Second type of device has same structure as first device except oxide layer. Second type of device shows I-V behavior similar to Resistive Memory. Resistive non-volatile memory shows low to high current path at increasing positive bias and high to low current path at increasing negative bias. I-V behaviors of second device due to effect of oxide layer between metal and polymer layer. Third type of polymer non-volatile memory we embed Au nano-crystal layer in polymer layer. Au nano-crystal layer embedded by curing process. We deposit 5nm Au layer after spin coated PVK(Poly-n-vinyl carbarzole) layer and curing at 300¡É. We can observe NDR(Negative Differential Resistance) Region and different I-V behaviors with other type of device. Finally we fabricated polymer non-volatile memory embedded au nano-crystal by dispersion method to confirm effect of au nano-crystal. We report difference I-V behaviors polymer non-volatile memory with metal / polymer / metal structure and polymer non-volatile memory embedded au nano-crystals

Many researchers have investigated organic nonvolatile memory devices as one of candidates device for next generation nonvolatile memory because of their low-cost, flexible and simple fabrication. The memory phenomenon in these devices is based on the electrical bistability of the material, which has two resistance states. We report memory effect in organic molecules based on electrical bistability of the materials and the bistable phenomenon was observed in poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) layer, containing a high density of Au nanocrystals and sandwiched between Al electrodes. The device was fabricated on cleaned SiO2. First, Al for the bottom electrode was deposited on SiO2 substrate by thermal evaporation in a vacuum chamber (pressure ∼10−6 torr). The PVK was dissolved with chloroform, spin-coated on the Al electrode, and baked at 120¡ÆC for 2 min to evaporate the solvent away. Subsequently, a 5-nm-thick Au film was deposited on the PVK. Additional PVK was then spin-coated on the Au film and baked. Next, the device was cured at 300¡É for 2 h in air to produce the Au nano-crystals. This device showed good nonvolatile memory characteristics. It was confirmed that it shows several region of current levels, (ION, IOFF, IINTER). When the voltage increased from zero in the OFF state (low conductivity state), the current increased rapidly at the threshold voltage (Vth), and presented a regime of negative differential resistance (NDR) after writing. Moreover ON and OFF states could be set at voltages at Vprogram (or Vp) and Verase (or Ve), respectively, and could be read at 1 V. After the device was programmed by sweeping the voltage from 0 to Vp, the current followed the high conductivity state and stayed in the ON state. And the device was programmed by sweeping the voltage from 0 to Ve, the current followed the low conductivity state and stayed in the OFF state. Furthermore, they exhibited seven different reversible current paths (intermediate states) capable for approving electron charge or discharge on surface of Au nanocrystals by sweeping the voltage from 0 to VNDR. Our results demonstrate that the fundamental parameters of the device were stable; the values of Vth, Vp, and Ve were ∼2.8, ∼4, and ∼8 V, respectively. In particular, this device exhibited excellent nonvolatile memory behavior, with bistability (ION/IOFF) of >1×102 and an intermediate state for multi-bit operation. We suggest that the current conduction mechanism clearly follow space-charge-limited(SCLC) for low conductivity state, thermionic field emission for electron charge(writing) or discharge(erasing), and F-N tunneling after erasing.

Er3+/Pr3+ co-doped soda-lime glass thin films have been fabricated using RF magnetron sputtering method and their structural and optical properties have been studied. Deposition rate, crystallinity, and composition of glass thin films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron probe micro area analysis. Refractive index, birefringence and binding characteristics have been investigated using a prism coupler and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Er3+/Pr3+ co-doped soda lime glass thin films were prepared by changing substrate temperature (room temp.∼550 ), RF power (90W∼150W), and Ar/O2 gas flow ratio at processing pressure of 4mTorr. Glass thin films could be obtained at the optimized processing condition at 350, RF power (130W), and gas flow (Ar:O2=40:0) with maximum deposition rate of 1.6νm/h. Refractive index increased from 1.5614 to 1.5838 and birefringence increased from 0.000154 to 0.000552 as the content of Pr3+ increased. Binding energy of Pr3d increased as the content of Pr3+ increased.

We analyze CO and H2 absorption lines of the foreground molecular cloud in the Carina nebula. We use HST-STIS (Hubble Space Telescope - Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph) & IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) INES data to analyze the A-X (v=0→2) absorption band of CO for several hot stars toward the Carina nebula, while 9 stars of them have FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) spectra to analyze the (v=0→4) vibrational band in the Lyman series of H2. The column densities of CO and H2 varies in the vicinity of N(CO) ~ 1013cm−2 and N(H2) ~ 1019cm−2, respectively. The resultant CO-to-H2 abundance ratio is about 10−6. We investigate the variation of the abundance ratio according to the relative position of the target stars to morphology the molecular cloud in the Carina nebula.

The large optical detection systems that are typically utilized at present may not be able to reach their full potential as portable analysis tools. Accurate, early, and fast diagnosis for many diseases requires the direct detection of biomolecules such as DNA, proteins, and cells. In this research, a glass microchip with integrated microelectrodes has been fabricated, and the performance of electrochemical impedance detection was investigated for the biomolecules. We have used label-free λ-DNA as a sample biomolecule. By changing the distance between microelectrodes, the significant difference between DW and the TE buffer solution is obtained from the impedance-frequency measurements. In addition, the comparison for the impedance magnitude of DW, the TE buffer, and λ-DNA at the same distance was analyzed.

The Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS) is a small spectrograph optimized for the observations of diffuse hot interstellar medium in far-ultraviolet wavebands (900–1150Å and 1335–1750Å). The instrument is expected to be sensitive to emission line fluxes an order of magnitude fainter than any previous missions. FIMS is currently under development and is scheduled for launch in 2002.

The purpose of the present study was to characterize the Ca2+ channels in smooth muscle cells from human stomach and to examine the effects of osmotic swelling on the channel activity. Ca2+ channel current with either Ca2+ or Ba2+ as charge carrier was recorded from freshly isolated smooth muscle cells using the conventional whole-cell patch clamp technique. The degree of cell swelling as a result of hypotonic challenge was monitored using a video image analysis system. The changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) were measured by microfluorimetry. The pharmacological and voltage activation profile suggests a typical dihydropyridine-sensitive L-type Ca2+ current. Cell swelling, induced by hypotonic challenge, enhanced the amplitude of currents through L-type Ca2+ channels without significant effects on steady-state voltage dependency. After treatment with the L-type Ca2+ channel agonist Bay K 8644 (0.1-2 µM), no further significant increase in calcium channel current or corresponding [Ca2+]i transients were provoked by the swelling. The above results demonstrated that the presence of L-type Ca2+ current in smooth muscle cells of the human stomach and the augmentation of the current are closely associated with the volume increase resulting from hypotonic swelling. We have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes on a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by thermal chemical vapor deposition using C2H2 gas. The carbon nanotubes grown by the thermal chemical vapor deposition are multi-wall structure, and the wall surface of nanotubes is covered with defective graphite sheets or carbonaceous particles. The carbon nanotubes range from 50 to 120 nm in diameter and about 130 μm in length at 950 °C. Steric hindrance between nanotubes at an initial stage of the growth forces nanotubes to align vertically. The turn-on voltage was about 0.8 V/μm with a current density of 0.1 μA/cm2 and emission current reveals the Fowler-Nordheim mode.

Ammonia gas was blown into the solution of zirconium ion to induce homogeneous precipitation of supersaturated zirconium ion at gas-liquid interface with increase in pH. The precipitates formed using interface of gas-liquid phase were decomposed into fine spherical zirconia powder of high purity. As Concentration increase, mean diameter of particles increases to 140, 180, 240, 290 and 630nm. At pH of 4.5, maximum yield of 98.7% was obtained. From the above pH of 4.5, yield has been kept constant. Above pH of 5.0, large aggregates of precipitate consisting of primary particles were formed, and this may have been caused due to the existence of isoelectric point. Below pH of 4.5, almost aggregate-free fine spherical powders with particle size of below 100nm were produced.
