We develop a mean-field theory of compressibility effects in turbulent magnetohydrodynamics and passive scalar transport using the quasi-linear approximation and the spectral $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$-approach. We find that compressibility decreases the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ effect and the turbulent magnetic diffusivity both at small and large magnetic Reynolds numbers, $Rm$. Similarly, compressibility decreases the turbulent diffusivity for passive scalars both at small and large Péclet numbers, $Pe$. On the other hand, compressibility does not affect the effective pumping velocity of the magnetic field for large $Rm$, but it decreases it for small $Rm$. Density stratification causes turbulent pumping of passive scalars, but it is found to become weaker with increasing compressibility. No such pumping effect exists for magnetic fields. However, compressibility results in a new passive scalar pumping effect from regions of low to high turbulent intensity both for small and large Péclet numbers. It can be interpreted as compressible turbophoresis of non-inertial particles and gaseous admixtures, while the classical turbophoresis effect exists only for inertial particles and causes them to be pumped to regions with lower turbulent intensity.

We apply a nonlinear mean-field dynamo model which includes a budget equation for the dynamics of Wolf numbers to predict solar activity. This dynamo model takes into account the algebraic and dynamic nonlinearities of the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ effect, where the equation for the dynamic nonlinearity is derived from the conservation law for the magnetic helicity. The budget equation for the evolution of the Wolf number is based on a formation mechanism of sunspots related to the negative effective magnetic pressure instability. This instability redistributes the magnetic flux produced by the mean-field dynamo. To predict solar activity on the time scale of one month we use a method based on a combination of the numerical solution of the nonlinear mean-field dynamo equations and the artificial neural network. A comparison of the results of the prediction of the solar activity with the observed Wolf numbers demonstrates a good agreement between the forecast and observations.

We discuss a mean-field theory of the generation of large-scale vorticity in a rotating density stratified developed turbulence with inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. We show that the large-scale non-uniform flow is produced due to either a combined action of a density stratified rotating turbulence and uniform kinetic helicity or a combined effect of a rotating incompressible turbulence and inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. These effects result in the formation of a large-scale shear, and in turn its interaction with the small-scale turbulence causes an excitation of the large-scale instability (known as a vorticity dynamo) due to a combined effect of the large-scale shear and Reynolds stress-induced generation of the mean vorticity. The latter is due to the effect of large-scale shear on the Reynolds stress. A fast rotation suppresses this large-scale instability.

A mean-field theory of differential rotation in a density stratified turbulent convection has been developed. This theory is based on the combined effects of the turbulent heat flux and anisotropy of turbulent convection on the Reynolds stress. A coupled system of dynamical budget equations consisting in the equations for the Reynolds stress, the entropy fluctuations and the turbulent heat flux has been solved. To close the system of these equations, the spectral $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$ approach, which is valid for large Reynolds and Péclet numbers, has been applied. The adopted model of the background turbulent convection takes into account an increase of the turbulence anisotropy and a decrease of the turbulent correlation time with the rotation rate. This theory yields the radial profile of the differential rotation which is in agreement with that for the solar differential rotation.

Sunspots are of basic interest in the study of the Sun. Their relevance ranges from them being an activity indicator of magnetic fields to being the place where coronal mass ejections and flares erupt. They are therefore also an important ingredient of space weather. Their formation, however, is still an unresolved problem in solar physics. Observations utilize just 2D surface information near the spot, but it is debatable how to infer deep structures and properties from local helioseismology. For a long time, it was believed that flux tubes rising from the bottom of the convection zone are the origin of the bipolar sunspot structure seen on the solar surface. However, this theory has been challenged, in particular recently by new surface observation, helioseismic inversions, and numerical models of convective dynamos. In this article we discuss another theoretical approach to the formation of sunspots: the negative effective magnetic pressure instability. This is a large-scale instability, in which the total (kinetic plus magnetic) turbulent pressure can be suppressed in the presence of a weak large-scale magnetic field, leading to a converging downflow, which eventually concentrates the magnetic field within it. Numerical simulations of forced stratified turbulence have been able to produce strong super-equipartition flux concentrations, similar to sunspots at the solar surface. In this framework, sunspots would only form close to the surface due to the instability constraints on stratification and rotation. Additionally, we present some ideas from local helioseismology, where we plan to use the Hankel analysis to study the pre-emergence phase of a sunspot and to constrain its deep structure and formation mechanism.

We derive equations for the mean entropy and the mean internal energy in low-Mach-number temperature stratified turbulence (i.e. for turbulent convection or stably stratified turbulence), and show that turbulent flux of entropy is given by $\boldsymbol{F}_{s}=\overline{{\it\rho}}\,\overline{\boldsymbol{u}s}$, where $\overline{{\it\rho}}$ is the mean fluid density, $s$ is fluctuation of entropy and overbars denote averaging over an ensemble of turbulent velocity fields, $\boldsymbol{u}$. We demonstrate that the turbulent flux of entropy is different from the turbulent convective flux, $\boldsymbol{F}_{c}=\overline{T}\,\overline{{\it\rho}}\,\overline{\boldsymbol{u}s}$, of the fluid internal energy, where $\overline{T}$ is the mean fluid temperature. This turbulent convective flux is well-known in the astrophysical and geophysical literature, and it cannot be used as a turbulent flux in the equation for the mean entropy. This result is exact for low-Mach-number temperature stratified turbulence and is independent of the model used. We also derive equations for the velocity–entropy correlation, $\overline{\boldsymbol{u}s}$, in the limits of small and large Péclet numbers, using the quasi-linear approach and the spectral ${\it\tau}$ approximation, respectively. This study is important in view of different applications to astrophysical and geophysical temperature stratified turbulence.

A reduction of total mean turbulent pressure due to the presence of magnetic fields was previously shown to be a measurable effect in direct numerical simulations. However, in the studied parameter regime the formation of large-scale structures, as anticipated from earlier mean-field simulations, was not found. An analysis of the relevant mean-field parameter dependency and the parameter domain of interest is conducted in order to clarify this apparent discrepancy.

While the rising flux tube paradigm is an elegant theory, its basic assumptions, thin flux tubes at the bottom of the convection zone with field strengths two orders of magnitude above equipartition, remain numerically unverified at best. As such, in recent years the idea of a formation of sunspots near the top of the convection zone has generated some interest. The presence of turbulence can strongly enhance diffusive transport mechanisms, leading to an effective transport coefficient formalism in the mean-field formulation. The question is what happens to these coefficients when the turbulence becomes anisotropic due to a strong large-scale mean magnetic field. It has been noted in the past that this anisotropy can also lead to highly non-diffusive behavior. In the present work we investigate the formation of large-scale magnetic structures as a result of a negative contribution of turbulence to the large-scale effective magnetic pressure in the presence of stratification. In direct numerical simulations of forced turbulence in a stratified box, we verify the existence of this effect. This phenomenon can cause formation of large-scale magnetic structures even from initially uniform large-scale magnetic field.

We study a simple model for the solar dynamo in the framework of the Parker dynamo, with a nonlinear dynamo saturation mechanism based on magnetic helicity conservation arguments. We find a parameter range in which the model demonstrates a cyclic behaviour with properties similar to that of Parker dynamo with the simplest form of algebraic $\alpha$-quenching. We compare the nonlinear current helicity evolution in this model with data for the current helicity evolution obtained during 10 years of observations at the Huairou Solar Station of China. We conclude that, in spite of the very preliminary state of the observations and the crude nature of the model, the idea of using observational data to constrain our ideas concerning magnetic field generation in the framework of the solar dynamo appears promising.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

Constant-density electrically conducting fluid is confined to a rapidly rotating spherical shell and is permeated by an axisymmetric potential magnetic field with dipole parity; the regions outside the shell are rigid insulators. Slow steady axisymmetric motion is driven by rotating the inner sphere at a slightly slower rate. Linear solutions of the governing magnetohydrodynamic equations are derived in the small Ekman number E-limit for values of the Elsasser number Λ less than order unity. Attention is restricted to the mainstream outside the Ekman–Hartmann layers adjacent to the inner and outer boundaries.

In the first issue of Journal of Fluid Mechanics Ian Proudman published a paper on the dynamical properties of a fluid between two concentric rotating spheres (Proudman, 1956). The angular velocities of the spheres were assumed only slightly different and the Reynolds number of the flow was large. It was found under non-slip boundary conditions that the cylindrical surface that touches the inner sphere and parallel to the axis of rotation is a singular surface in which velocity gradients are very large. Outside the cylinder the fluid rotates as a rigid body with the same angular velocity as the outer sphere. Inside the cylinder the fluid rotates with an angular velocity intermediate to the angular velocities of the spheres and there is also a meridional circulation. Later Stewartson (1966) presented a detailed investigation of structure of the shear layer near the cylindrical surface. One of the present authors (Ruzmaikin, 1989) pointed out a possible geophysical importance of these solutions. The liquid part of the Earth core occupying a shell between the inner solid core and the rock mantle can be considered as the fluid between two rotating spheres.

The nonlinear (in terms of the large-scale magnetic field) effect of the modification of the magnetic force by an advanced small-scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is considered. The phenomenon is due to the generation of magnetic fluctuations at the expense of hydrodynamic pulsations. It results in a decrease of the elasticity of the large-scale magnetic field.

The renormalization group (RNG) method was employed for the investigation of the MHD turbulence at the large magnetic Reynolds number. It was found that the level of the magnetic fluctuations can exceed that obtained from the equipartition assumption due to the inverse energy cascade in advanced MHD turbulence.

This effect can excite an instability of the large-scale magnetic field due to the energy transfer from the small-scale turbulent pulsations. This instability is an example of the inverse energy cascade in advanced MHD turbulence. It may act as a mechanism for the large-scale magnetic ropes formation in the solar convective zone and spiral galaxies.

Magnetic field observations in the dayside ionosphere of Venus revealed the magnetic flux ropes (Russell and Elphic 1979). General properties of these small-scale magnetic field structures can be explained by the theory of magnetic fluctuations excited by random hydrodynamic flows of ionospheric plasma.

A nonlinear theory of the flux tubes formation based on the Zeldovich's mechanism of amplification of the magnetic fluctuations is proposed. A nonlinear equation describing the evolution of the correlation function of the magnetic field can be derived from the induction equation, the nonlinearity being connected with the Hall effect. The large magnetic Reynolds number limit allows an asymptotic study by a modified WKB method.

On the basis of this theory it is possible to explain why the flux tubes are not observed if there is a strong regular large-scale magnetic field when the ionopause is low. The theory predicts the cross section of the flux ropes in the ionosphere of Venus and the maximum value of the magnetic field inside the flux tube.
