In stable populations with constant demographic rates, size distributions reflect size-dependent patterns of growth and mortality. However, population growth can also affect size distributions, which may not be aligned with current growth and mortality. Using 25 y of demographic data from the 50-ha Barro Colorado Island plot, we examined how interspecific variation in diameter distributions of over 150 tropical trees relates to growth–diameter and mortality–diameter curves and to population growth rates. Diameter distributions were more skewed in species with faster increases/slower decreases in absolute growth and mortality with diameter and higher population growth rates. The strongest predictor of the diameter distribution shape was the exponent governing the scaling of growth with diameter (partial R2 = 0.20–0.34), which differed among growth forms, indicating a role of life history variation. However, interspecific variation in diameter distributions was also significantly related to population growth rates (partial R2 = 0.03–0.23), reinforcing that many populations are not at equilibrium. Consequently, although fitted size distribution parameters were positively related to theoretical predictions based on current size-dependent growth and mortality, there was considerable deviation. These analyses show that temporally variable demographic rates, probably related to cyclic climate variation, are important influences on forest structure.

Irreversible pathological lesions were noted in the organs of mice infected with 1 of 3 rodent malaria species: Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi, P. vinckei petteri and P. yoelii nigeriensis at different times during the course of the primary parasitaemia and long after microscopical clearance of the parasites. Moreover, similar lesions were also obtained when parasite levels were kept below 1%by subcurative drug treatment. The frequency and severity of the lesions correlated with the duration of the infection. Accumulation of tissue damage during chronic low-grade malaria infections has implications for the design of control measures.

In the blood of a Cercocebus albigena and of a C. galeritus agilis monkey, the infection with Plasmodium gonderi was found to follow its well-known chronic course; P. georgesi seemed to occur as a relapsing type of malaria parasite; P. petersi was found for only a few days and at a low level in C. albigena (end of an attack?). As shown by using polarized light, the pigment granules appeared mostly as fine dots in P. georgesi, short rods in P. gonderi and long needles in P. petersi. The three species can be distinguished by the morphological appearance of the nucleus of the young trophozoites, and also by the measurement of its surface area (Sa): small round nucleus (Sa= 0·81 ± 0·06 μm2) in P. gonderi, large 2-coloured nucleus (Sa= 1·43 ± 0·21 μm2) in P. petersi, and long crescent-shaped nucleus (Sa= 2·18±0·25 μm2) in P. georgesi. The first colour illustrations of the blood-stages of P. georgesi are presented. The dynamics of single and mixed blood infections in primate malaria parasites are discussed, with a proposal to classify them into 3 types.

An examination of 235 Plica umbra and 167 Uranoscodon superciliosa (Sauria: Iguanidae) from Belém, Pará, Brazil, has revealed a number of hitherto undescribed blood parasites. These include Fallisia audaciosa, F. simplex, Garnia multiformis, Plasmodium vacuolatum and Trypanosoma plicae spp.nov., all in P. umbra, and G. uranoscodoni sp.nov. in U. superciliosa. In addition, both species of lizards showed occasional Eperythrozoon and microfilaria infections. Among the haemosporines, F. audaciosa is particularly interesting in its restriction to the neutrophils; and G. multiformis for its early development in erythroblasts of the bone-marrow, and its variable morphology in subsequent stages of the infection in the peripheral blood. Mixed infections of the different haemosporines resulted in 18 combinations of parasites in P. umbra, indicating the importance of examining a large number of these animals when preparing descriptions of the individual organisms. T. plicae is a large, broad trypanosome, averaging ∼ 57·0 × 16·0 μm. Isolation of the parasite was made from four out of six P. umbra, after the culture of heart blood in NNN medium: the fact that none of the four positive lizards showed detectable trypanosomes in the peripheral blood suggests a high incidence of occult infections. The incidence among the remaining 229 P. umbra, as given by the direct examination of blood-films, was only 10·0%.

The feeding behaviour of Mamber dairy goats grazing on Mediterranean woodland in the Upper Galilee mountains of Israel was studied throughout a year (1991/92). The percentages of crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL) and condensed tannins (CT) were determined in samples collected by hand to simulate the plant parts selected by the goats. Total feed intake was evaluated by using Cr-sesquioxide as an external marker to determine the amount of faeces excreted, and 48 h in sacco degradability to assess the digestibility of samples. Overall, more time was spent by goats in feeding on ligneous material (tree and shrub foliage) than herbaceous vegetation (60 and 40% of total feeding time, respectively, P<0·05). The main ligneous species consumed by the goats were Quercus calliprinos, Sarcopoterium spinosum and Calicotome villosa (20, 13 and 7% of total grazing time, respectively). There was considerable variability in the 48 h dry matter (DM) in sacco degradability, and in the concentration of CP, NDF, ADF, ADL and CT, within and between seasons and plant species. Although requirements for nutrients varied according to the physiological stage of the goats, 48 h in sacco DM degradability and the concentration of non-ADF linked (available) CP, NDF, ADF, ADL and CT in the diet did not vary greatly: respective ranges were 45·0–49·4; 9–12·5; 44–53; 33–39; 12–17 and 3·5–4·7%. It is concluded that Mamber goats (i) may not select the best quality diet available, but may avoid wide variations in nutrient content of their diets throughout the year; and (ii) may not select a diet consistent with maximization of milk yield, but rather with optimization of body condition at the onset of the mating season.
