Fullerene dimers have attracted extensive attention due to their unique structures and fascinating properties. Here, fullerene dimer derivatives with four to six carbon atoms in the esters are designed and synthesized. The property differences that caused by the carbon number in the esters of the fullerene dimers are investigated by performing their electrochemical, optical, and photoelectric measurements. As the carbon atom numbers in the esters increase from four to five and six, the absorption intensities increase to 1.6- and 4.4-folds. The intensities of the fluorescence spectra increase to 1.8- and 5.2-folds. Their photocurrent increases to 2- and 7-folds under the irradiation of a 405-nm laser. The LUMO energy levels move downward slightly from −3.89 to −3.90 and −3.92 eV, respectively. Our results indicate that as the carbon number increases, the carbon chain lengths in the ester structures increase, very slight effects produced on the energy levels of the fullerene dimers, but strongly contribute to their chemical activities and thus the photoelectronic efficiencies.

The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the prognostic significance of pre-treatment immunological and nutritional statuses in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (GC), and to use the risk factors to develop a predictive score. A total of 731 patients who underwent gastrectomy for stage II/III GC from November 2010 to December 2015 were recruited into this retrospective study. On the basis of univariate and further multivariate Cox regression analyses, decreased pretreatment lymphocyte count (<1·5×109/litre) and prealbumin concentrations (<180 mg/l) were identified to be independently associated with poorer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Low albumin concentrations (<33 g/l) were identified as an independent risk factor only for OS, but not for DFS. Thereafter, patients who had a decreased prealbumin concentration and lymphocyte count were given a combination of serum prealbumin concentration and lymphocyte count (Co-PaL) score of 2. Patients with only one or neither of these concentrations were given a Co-PaL score of 1 or 0, respectively. Both the OS and the DFS time were inversely related to the Co-PaL scores, and the differences among the three groups were all significant. In contrast, the prognosis did not differ significantly between patients with good nutrition and those with mild to moderate malnutrition according to the prognostic nutritional index. This study indicated that the simple scoring system could accurately predict the prognosis of patients who underwent gastrectomy for stage II/III GC. The score might be helpful in terms of clinical preoperative decision-making.

The spin Hamiltonian parameters (g factor and hyperfine structure constants) of Cr+ in ZnX (X = S, Se, Te) and CdTe are theoretically investigated, using the perturbation formulas of these parameters for a tetrahedral 3d5 cluster. Both the contributions from the crystal-field (CF) and charge transfer (CT) mechanisms are considered from the cluster approach. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental data. The CT contribution to g-shift Δg (=g − gs, where gs =2.0023 is the spin only value) is opposite (positive) in sign related to the CF one, and its importance (characterized by the relative ratio (|ΔgCT/ΔgCF|) is 11%, 66% and 104% (71%) for ZnS, ZnSe and ZnTe (CdTe), respectively. ACT from the CT contribution to hyperfine structure constant is the same (positive) in sign and about 50–53% in magnitude as compared with ACF from the CF one.

An efficient AHL (N-acyl-homoserine lactone) bioassay strain, JZA1, of Agrobacterium tumefaciens was used to detect the AHL production from Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli [the pathogen causing bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) of melons], and the results showed that A. avenae subsp. citrulli produced a 3-O-C8-homoserine (HSL) type signal molecule. Gene aiiA, which could degrade AHL molecules, was transformed into A. avenae subsp. citrulli strain NJF10, creating strain NJF10-aiiA. The AHL production from NJF10-aiiA was significantly reduced compared with wild-type NJF10. Inoculation tests showed that NJF10-aiiA had an obvious reduction of virulence on watermelon fruits. Our finds showed that AHL production by A. avenae subsp. citrulli was related to its pathogenicity. This work might provide a novel way to control BFB by QS (quorum sensing) interference.

The molecular mechanisms underlying the involvement of oligodendrocytes in formation of the nodes of Ranvier (NORs) remain poorly understood. Here we show that oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein (OMgp) aggregates specifically at NORs. Nodal location of OMgp does not occur along demyelinated axons of either Shiverer or proteolipid protein (PLP) transgenic mice. Over-expression of OMgp in OLN-93 cells facilitates process outgrowth. In transgenic mice in which expression of OMgp is down-regulated, myelin thickness declines, and lateral oligodendrocyte loops at the node-paranode junction are less compacted and even join together with the opposite loops, which leads to shortened nodal gaps. Notably, each of these structural abnormalities plus modest down-regulation of expression of Na+ channel α subunit result in reduced conduction velocity in the spinal cords of the mutant mice. Thus, OMgp that is derived from glia has distinct roles in regulating nodal formation and function during CNS myelination.

The effect of pressure on the crystallization behavior of Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30 bulk metallic glass was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Although the crystallization products under high pressure were about the same as those under ambient pressure, the evident changes in the relative crystallization fraction of each phase were observed. The applied pressure enhanced the crystallization temperature. Pressure annealing of the bulk metallic glass produced a composite with dispersion of very fine nanocrystallites in the amorphous matrix. A full nanocrystallization was obtained for the sample annealed under 5 GPa at 793 K. The mechanism for the pressure-induced nanocrystallization is discussed.

The effect of mechanical deformation via high-energy ball milling on the structure of the Fe40Ni40P14B6 metallic glass was studied by means of x-ray diffactometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). After 5 h of milling, TEM observations indicated that some nanocrystallites with a diameter of about 6 nm precipitated from surface layers of the amorphous ribbons, whereas the bulk remained amorphous. When milling time was increased to 11 h, bulk crystallization occurred. The amorphous Fe40Ni40P14B6 alloy crystallized into a mixture of γ–(Fe, Ni) and (Fe, Ni)3(P, B). To understand the microstructural changes occurring in the amorphous ribbons before the onset of bulk crystallization, the isothermal crystallization behavior of as-deformed amorphous ribbons was studied. Compared with as-quenched amorphous ribbons, the local value of the Avrami exponent, derived from isothermal DSC data, increased from 3.5 to 4.1 for bulk crystallization. The thermal crystallization mechanism of deformed amorphous Fe40Ni40P14B6 ribbons changed from an eutectic-type reaction with simultaneous precipitation of γ–(Fe, Ni) and (Fe, Ni)3(P,B) from the amorphous matrix to a primary-type reaction with precipitation of α–Fe(P,B) preceding the formation of γ–(Fe,Ni) and (Fe,Ni)3(P,B). Our results suggest that several hours of mechanical milling cause surface crystallization and some atomic rearrangements in the amorphous alloy. The latter effect may be responsible for the observed primary-type reaction for crystallization of the deformed amorphous alloy

The combustion reaction while mechanical alloying (MA) the Al–Ti–C system has been detected by in situ thermal analysis and the results of x-ray diffraction (XRD). Based on the information provided by in situ thermal analysis, the reaction temperature is estimated to be 1677 K, which is in good agreement with the value of the adiabatic temperature of 1700 K. It is considered that the formation reaction of Ti–C, which ignited by the heavy collisions of milling balls, induced the following reaction between Ti and Al at high temperature.

The explosive reactions or self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) take place during milling Ni20Ti50C30 and Ni50Ti30C20 elemental powder mixtures. The coexistence of agglomerates and powders in products indicates the occurrence of melting and solidification. TiC phase and NiTi compound were obtained during millingNi20Ti50C30, while no compound of nickel and titanium was observed when milling Ni50Ti30C20, the final product of which is TiC and Ni. It is suggested that the explosive reaction is ignited by the heat releasing from initial formation of TiC through heavy collisions of milling balls, and the reaction between Ni and Ti, as well as the existence of Ni–Ti liquid, make the following reaction self-sustained. The variation of the addition of nickel did not affect the reaction time in both compositions, but made the reaction temperature different due to the difference of composition of Ni and Ti. It is estimated that the temperature during the reaction in Ni20Ti50C30 rises above 1112 °C, while in Ni50Ti30C20, it might rise above 1349 °C. However, no phenomenon suggests the melting of pure elemental Ti; the formation of TiC is mainly controlled by the diffusion mechanism in SHS.
