We introduce a class of non-uniform random recursive trees grown with an attachment preference for young age. Via the Chen–Stein method of Poisson approximation, we find that the outdegree of a node is characterized in the limit by ‘perturbed’ Poisson laws, and the perturbation diminishes as the node index increases. As the perturbation is attenuated, a pure Poisson limit ultimately emerges in later phases. Moreover, we derive asymptotics for the proportion of leaves and show that the limiting fraction is less than one half. Finally, we study the insertion depth in a random tree in this class. For the insertion depth, we find the exact probability distribution, involving Stirling numbers, and consequently we find the exact and asymptotic mean and variance. Under appropriate normalization, we derive a concentration law and a limiting normal distribution. Some of these results contrast with their counterparts in the uniform attachment model, and some are similar.

We discuss a rich family of directed series–parallel (SP) graphs grown by the simultaneous random series or parallel development of multiple edges. The family portrays a spectrum that spans a wide range of SP graphs: from simple models, where only as few as one edge is chosen for evolution at each discrete point in time, to complex hierarchical lattice networks grown by a take-all strategy, where all the edges in the existing network are developed.

The family of SP graphs we discuss is grown from an initial seed graph with τ0 edges under an arbitrary building sequence, $\{k_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$, of nonnegative integers (with $k_n \le \tau _0 + \sum\nolimits_{i = 1}^n {k_i} $, for arbitrary τ0 ≥ 1), that specifies the number of edges subjected to evolution at time n. We study the average north polar degree and show that we can go beyond averages to strong laws. We also find the exact average number of critical edges. The asymptotics of the critical edges are facilitated under the regularity condition that $k_n/\sum\nolimits_{i = 1}^n {k_i} $ converges to a constant (as n → ∞), a natural condition easily met by practical strategies, such as single-edge evolution and take-all choice, and much in between.

We investigate protected nodes in random recursive trees. The exact mean of the number of such nodes is obtained by recurrence, and a linear asymptotic equivalent follows. A nonlinear recurrence for the variance shows that the variance grows linearly, too. It follows that the number of protected nodes in a random recursive tree, upon proper scaling, converges in probability to a constant.

We introduce an incremental growth model for directed binary series-parallel (SP) graphs. The vertices of a directed binary SP graphs can only have outdgrees 1 or 2. We show that the number of vertices of outdegree 1 have a normal distribution (so, necessarily, the vertices of outdegree 2 have a normal distribution, too). Furthermore, we study the average length of a random walk between the poles of the graph. The asymptotic equivalent of the latter property includes the golden ratio. Pólya urns will systematically provide a coding method to initiate the studies.

We investigate the evolution of an urn of balls of two colors, where one chooses a pair of balls and observes rules of ball addition according to the outcome. A nonsquare ball addition matrix of the form $\left( \matrix{a & b \cr c & d \cr e & f}\right)$ corresponds to such a scheme, in contrast to pólya urn models that possess a square ball addition matrix. We look into the case of constant row sum (the so-called balanced urns) and identify a linear case therein. Two cases arise in linear urns: the nondegenerate and the degenerate. Via martingales, in the nondegenerate case one gets an asymptotic normal distribution for the number of balls of any color. In the degenerate case, a simpler probability structure underlies the process. We mention in passing a heuristic for the average-case analysis for the general case of constant row sum.

We introduce a natural growth model for directed series-parallel (SP) graphs and look at some of the graph properties under this stochastic model. Specifically, we look at the degrees of certain types of nodes in the random SP graph. We examine the degree of a pole and will find its exact distribution, given by a probability formula with alternating signs. We also prove that, for a fixed value s, the number of nodes of outdegree 1, …, s asymptotically has a joint multivariate normal distribution. Pólya urns will systematically provide a working tool.

We study a class of tenable, irreducible, nondegenerate zero-balanced Pólya urn schemes. We give a full characterization of the class by sufficient and necessary conditions. Only forms with a certain cyclic structure in their replacement matrix are admissible. The scheme has a steady state into proportions governed by the principal (left) eigenvector of the average replacement matrix. We study the gradual change for any such urn containing n → ∞ balls from the initial condition to the steady state. We look at the status of an urn starting with an asymptotically positive proportion of each color after jn draws. We identify three phases of jn: the growing sublinear, the linear, and the superlinear. In the growing sublinear phase the number of balls of different colors has an asymptotic joint multivariate normal distribution, with mean and covariance structure that are influenced by the initial conditions. In the linear phase a different multivariate normal distribution kicks in, in which the influence of the initial conditions is attenuated. The steady state is not a good approximation until a certain superlinear amount of time has elapsed. We give interpretations for how the results in different phases conjoin at the ‘seam lines’. In fact, these Gaussian phases are all manifestations of one master theorem. The results are obtained via multivariate martingale theory. We conclude with some illustrating examples.

The ‘coupon collection problem’ refers to a class of occupancy problems in which j identical items are distributed, independently and at random, to n cells, with no restrictions on multiple occupancy. Identifying the cells as coupons, a coupon is ‘collected’ if the cell is occupied by one or more of the distributed items; thus, some coupons may never be collected, whereas others may be collected once or twice or more. We call the number of coupons collected exactly r times coupons of type r. The coupon collection model we consider is general, in that a random number of purchases occurs at each stage of collecting a large number of coupons; the sample sizes at each stage are independent and identically distributed according to a sampling distribution. The joint behavior of the various types is an intricate problem. In fact, there is a variety of joint central limit theorems (and other limit laws) that arise according to the interrelation between the mean, variance, and range of the sampling distribution, and of course the phase (how far we are in the collection processes). According to an appropriate combination of the mean of the sampling distribution and the number of available coupons, the phase is sublinear, linear, or superlinear. In the sublinear phase, the normalization that produces a Gaussian limit law for uncollected coupons can be used to obtain a multivariate central limit law for at most two other types — depending on the rates of growth of the mean and variance of the sampling distribution, we may have a joint central limit theorem between types 0 and 1, or between types 0, 1, and 2. In the linear phase we have a multivariate central limit theorem among the types 0, 1,…, k for any fixed k.

We consider a serialized coin-tossing leader election algorithm that proceeds in rounds until a winner is chosen, or all contestants are eliminated. The analysis allows for either biased or fair coins. We find the exact distribution for the duration of any fixed contestant; asymptotically, it turns out to be a geometric distribution. Rice's method (an analytic technique) shows that the moments of the duration contain oscillations, which we give explicitly for the mean and variance. We also use convergence in the Wasserstein metric space to show that the distribution of the total number of coin flips (among all participants), suitably normalized, approaches a normal limiting random variable.

In this paper we consider a generalized coupon collection problem in which a customer repeatedly buys a random number of distinct coupons in order to gather a large number n of available coupons. We address the following question: How many different coupons are collected after k = kn draws, as n → ∞? We identify three phases of kn: the sublinear, the linear, and the superlinear. In the growing sublinear phase we see o(n) different coupons, and, with true randomness in the number of purchases, under the appropriate centering and scaling, a Gaussian distribution is obtained across the entire phase. However, if the number of purchases is fixed, a degeneracy arises and normality holds only at the higher end of this phase. If the number of purchases have a fixed range, the small number of different coupons collected in the sublinear phase is upgraded to a number in need of centering and scaling to become normally distributed in the linear phase with a different normal distribution of the type that appears in the usual central limit theorems. The Gaussian results are obtained via martingale theory. We say a few words in passing about the high probability of collecting nearly all the coupons in the superlinear phase. It is our aim to present the results in a way that explores the critical transition at the ‘seam line’ between different Gaussian phases, and between these phases and other nonnormal phases.

We consider a variety of subtrees of various shapes lying on the fringe of a recursive tree. We prove that (under suitable normalization) the number of isomorphic images of a given fixed tree shape on the fringe of the recursive tree is asymptotically Gaussian. The parameters of the asymptotic normal distribution involve the shape functional of the given tree. The proof uses the contraction method.

Via order statistics we analyze the average length of all separators in random Prefix B-trees. From this result we draw some conclusions and conjectures concerning the average overall storage of random Prefix B-trees.

The depth of insertion and the internal path length of recursive trees are studied. Luc Devroye has recently shown that the depth of insertion in recursive trees is asymptotically normal. We give a direct alternative elementary proof of this fact. Furthermore, via the theory of martingales, we show that In, the internal path length of a recursive tree of order n, converges to a limiting distribution. In fact, we show that there exists a random variable I such that (In – n In n)/n→I almost surely and in quadratic mean, as n → α. The method admits, in passing, the calculation of the first two moments of In.

We analyze a standard algorithm for sampling m items without replacement from a computer file of n records. The algorithm repeatedly selects a record at random from the file, rejecting records that have previously been selected, until m records are obtained. The running time of the algorithm has two components: a rejection component and a search component. We show that the probability distribution of the rejection component undergoes an infinite series of phase transitions, depending on the order of magnitude of m relative to n. We identify an infinite number of ranges of m, each with a different behavior. The rejection component is distributed as a linear combination of Poisson-like random variables. The search component is customarily done using a hash table with separate chaining. The analysis of the hashing scheme in this problem differs from previous hashing analyses, as the number of lookups in the hash table for each insertion has a geometric distribution. We show that the average overall cost of searching is asymptotically linear with only two phase transitions in the coefficient of linearity.

We investigate the average similarity of random strings as captured by the average number of ‘cousins’ in the underlying tree structures. Analytical techniques including poissonization and the Mellin transform are used for accurate calculation of the mean. The string alphabets we consider are m-ary, and the corresponding trees are m-ary trees. Certain analytic issues arise in the m-ary case that do not have an analog in the binary case.

We investigate the limit distributions associated with cost measures in Sattolo's algorithm for generating random cyclic permutations. The number of moves made by an element turns out to be a mixture of 1 and 1 plus a geometric distribution with parameter ½, where the mixing probability is the limiting ratio of the rank of the element being moved to the size of the permutation. On the other hand, the raw distance traveled by an element to its final destination does not converge in distribution without norming. Linearly scaled, the distance converges to a mixture of a uniform and a shifted product of a pair of independent uniforms. The results are obtained via randomization as a transform, followed by derandomization as an inverse transform. The work extends analysis by Prodinger.

The binary interval tree is a random structure that underlies interval division and parking problems. Five incomplete one-sided variants of binary interval trees are considered, providing additional flavors and variations on the main applications. The size of each variant is studied, and a Gaussian tendency is proved in each case via an analytic approach. Differential equations on half scale and delayed differential equations arise and can be solved asymptotically by local expansions and Tauberian theorems. Unlike the binary case, in an incomplete interval tree the size determines most other parameters of interest, such as the height or the internal path length.
