Laser technology developments, including construction of a 286-TW Ti:Sapphire laser with a focused intensity of 1021W/cm2, installation of the TIL, prototype of the SG-III, and operation of the SG-II laser are presented. Results of the experiments on hohlraum physics, indirect-drive implosion, Thomson scattering, EOS, and X-ray laser are briefly introduced. Simulations and a code package, LARED, for target physics are outlined.

J aggregates cyanine dyes have been successfully doped directly in sol-gel derived silicate thin films. The films are transparent, homogeneous and stable at room temperature. The J aggregates successfully incorporated in rigid SiO2 framework were characterized by absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy. The films are expected to be useful for non-linear optical devices, multiple photon recording and photoelectric cell.

Highly ordered self-assembly organized silica meso-structured architectures have attracted increasing attention because these materials provide a rich source for scientific research and technological applications. This approach to meso-structured materials has been extended to non-silica oxides, especially transition-metal-oxides which might promise applications involving electron transfer or magnetic interactions. We report the syntheses of transition-metal-oxides meso-structured thin films (MSTF), such as TiO2, V2O5, Fe2O3 and Nb2O5, using a surfactant templating processing with spin coating method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films showed that the films generally oriented in a lamellar structure. The phase transferring in V205 MSTF was also investigated.

The simple spin casting technique has been successfully used for producing mesoporous thin films on glass substrate. The films are found to be homogeneous and continuous in a large size scale, however, the mesostructural phase of the film has been controlled systematically among amorphous (A), one-dimensional hexagonal (1-dH), cubic (C) and Lamellae (L) by increasing surfactant to TEOS concentration ratio in the casting solution. The 1-dH as well as cubic structure is thermally stable after the calcination so that a mesoporous thin film is obtained by surfactant removal. The solution additives of 1-propanol and 2-butanol might play a roll in the direct formation of the primitive cubic phase in the film form which has never been obtained.

Self-assembly of organic-inorganic molecules into highly order nanostructured architectures have attracted increasing attention because these materials provide a rich source for scientific research and technological applications. We report the synthesis of an oriented silica mesostructured film by ferrocenyl surfactant templating using a spin coating method. The oriented silica meso-structure film was prepared as follows: tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was partially hydrolyzed by a substoichiometric amount of pure water mixed with ethanol (EtOH) under acidic condition. The solution became homogeneous as the hydrolysis proceeded, then, ferrocenyl TMA was added, the mixture was stirred at room temperature for about 1 hour, and finally, the film was obtained by spin coating the hybrid sol. X-ray diffraction pattern of the film showed that the film oriented in a lamellar structure with (100) d-space of 36.3 A. The optical and electronic conductivity properties of the film have also been explored.

Self-assembled functional dye molecules in mesoporous transition metal oxides have been synthesized directly by Pc (phthalocyanine) molecules doped within hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16 TMA) micelles assembled with oxide frameworks such as Vanadia (VOX), FeOx, MoO3 and WO3 to produce Pc-doped mesostructured materials. The Pc molecules were heavily doped inside the mesoporous channels and dye's optical absorption were measured. Pc molecules in contact with mesoporous transition metal oxides interfaces are optically excited and provide reductive electrons to water molecules to decompose into hydrogen by visible light exposures.

We previously reported the synthesis and some properties of heterostructure nanoparticles, i.e. CdS coated with PbS (CdS/PbS). We report further characterization and investigation of the infrared photoluminescence (PL) of the CdS and coated CdS/PbS nanoparticles. This allows us to provide a more stringent test of the quantum confinement model. We consider the energy shift of the PL peak and the variation of the PL intensity correlated with the predictions of the quantum confinement model. The experimental results can be explained by this model of coated semiconductor nanoparticles.
