We have compiled and analysed available records and data on the shrinkage of Satopanth (SPG) and Bhagirath Kharak (BKG) Glaciers, Uttarakhand, India, during the period 1936–2013. We estimate the mean retreat rates of the snouts of SPG and BKG for this period at 9.7±0.8m a–1 and 7.0±0.6m a–1 respectively. We have also revised the estimates of the area vacated during the period 1956–2013 to be 0.27 ± 0.05 km2 and 0.17 ± 0.04 km2 for SPG and BKG respectively, corresponding to front-averaged retreat rates of 5.7±0.6m a–1 and 6.0±0.9m a–1. The study revealed an average thinning of glacial ice in the lower ablation zone of SPG of 9 ± 11 m in the past 51 years. We observed that while the fronts of SPG and BKG depicted in the Survey of India topographic map published in 1962 are inconsistent with other available records, the elevation contours are consistent with them.

It i.s difficult to compare genotypic resistance to insects across seasons and locations because of the variation in the onset and severity of insect infestation. Therefore, in this study, we used the no-choice cage technique and detached leaf and artificial diet incorporation assays for evaluating chickpea genotypes for resistance to the beet armyworm Spodopteraexigua (Hubner). The results indicated that the no-choice cage technique was not useful for evaluating chickpea genotypes for resistance to S. exigua. In the detached leaf assay, leaf feeding by S. exigua larvae was significantly lower in ICC 12 475 and RIL 20 genotypes at the vegetative stage and in ICC 10 393, ICC 12 475, KAK 2, RIL 20 and RIL 25 genotypes at the flowering stage, while larval weight gain was lower in insects reared on EC 583264, ICC 10 393, ICC 12 475 and RIL 20 genotypes at the vegetative stage; and in those reared on ICC 10 393, ICC 12 475, EC 583264, ICCL 86 111, KAK 2, RIL 20 and RIL 25 genotypes at the flowering stage in plants raised under greenhouse conditions. In plants raised under field conditions, the EC 583260, ICC 12 475, ICCL 86 111, ICCV 10, KAK 2, RIL 20 and RIL 25 genotypes in the November sowing and the KAK 2, ICC 3137, ICCL 86 111 and RIL 25 genotypes in the December sowing suffered low leaf damage at the vegetative stage; and EC 58 320, EC 583264, ICC 12 745 and RIL 25 genotypes in the November sowing and the EC 583264, ICC 3137, ICC 12 475, 1CCL 86 111, KAK 2, RIL 20 and RIL 25 genotypes in the December sowing suffered low leaf damage at the flowering stage, while low larval weights were recorded in insects reared on the ICC 12 475, EC 583264, ICCL 86 111 and RIL 25 genotypes at the flowering stage. In the diet incorporation assay, the survival of S. exigua larvae reared on diets with leaf powder of the ICC 12 475, ICC 10 393 and RIL 25 genotypes was significantly lower, while a significant reduction in larval weights was recorded in those reared on diets with leaf powder of the ICC 10 393, ICC 12 475, ICCL 86 111, KAK 2, RIL 25 and ICC 3137 genotypes. The fecundity of insects was also reduced in insects reared on diets with leaf powder of the RIL 25, RIL 20, ICCV 10, ICCL 86 111, ICC 12 475, ICC 3137, KAK 2 and ICC 10 393 genotypes. The results suggest that detached leaf assay could be used for large-scale screening of chickpea genotypes for resistance to S. exigua, while the diet incorporation assay could be used to gain additional information on the antibiosis mechanism of resistance to this insect.

The noctuid moth Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) is the most damaging pest of chickpea worldwide. Plant resistance is an important component for the management of this pest. To develop cultivars with resistance to insects, it is important to understand the role of different components associated with resistance to insects. Therefore, we characterized a diverse array of chickpea genotypes for organic acid profiles in the leaf exudates that are associated with resistance to H. armigera. Chickpea leaf exudates contained five major organic acids that were identified as malic, oxalic, acetic, citric and fumaric acids. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) profiles of the leaf exudates of nine chickpea genotypes showed that amounts of malic acid were negatively correlated with leaf feeding by H. armigera larvae at flowering and maturity, and with pod damage. Oxalic acid showed a negative association with leaf damage in the detached leaf assay. Additionally, the amounts of acetic acid were negatively correlated with larval weights and damage rating at the flowering and maturity stages. Citric acid levels were negatively associated with damage rating at the flowering stage. Implications of using the HPLC profiles of organic acids in the leaf exudates of chickpea to breed for resistance to H. armigera are discussed.

The resistance or susceptibility of sorghum genotypes to damage by the spotted stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) is commonly measured in terms of leaf damage, deadheart formation and stem tunnelling. Effect of the host plant on the insect survival and development (antibiosis) and the response of the plant to insect damage (tolerance or recovery resistance) are also important parameters for measuring host plant resistance to stemborers. We compared ten selection indices commonly used to select genotypes for tolerance/resistance to various stresses, namely functional plant loss index (FPLI), antibiosis index (ABI), mean productivity index (MPI), mean relative performance (MRP), relative efficiency index (REI), tolerance index (TOL), Fischer's and Maurer's stress susceptibility index (FMSSI), Fernandez stress tolerance index (FSTI), geometric mean productivity (GMP) and Schneider's stress severity index (SSSI). The results suggest that the indices based on grain yield reduction can be combined with those associated with grain yield response and potential under borer-infested and uninfested conditions, since each index assesses different biological mechanisms (such as tolerance, adaptation and/or productivity). Among these, FPLI can be used to differentiate the sorghum genotypes for different components of resistance by taking into account both foliar damage and deadheart formation. GMP, REI and FSTI provided a better discrimination of the stemborer-tolerant genotypes under borer-infested conditions, and were better predictors of grain yield performance than TOL, MPI, MRP, ABI, SSSI, FMSSI and FPLI. A strong association between GMP and REI indicated that both these indices could be used to select for low grain yield loss and high productivity. However, the selection of genotypes with high grain yield potential and adaptation to borer infestation may be achieved by combining selection indices related to the mean grain yield performance under borer-infested and uninfested conditions (GMP and REI), and low levels of grain yield loss under borer infestation.

In recent years, the serpentine leaf miner Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) has become a major pest of cotton (Gossypium spp.) in India, with high levels of incidence observed at the seedling stage, particularly in transgenic Bt cotton. We monitored the severity of infestation and damage by L. trifolii to transgenic and non-transgenic genotypes of Gossypium arboreum L. and G. hirsutum L. between 2002 and 2007. Overall, significantly lower L. trifolii damage occurred in G. arboreum varieties than in G. hirsutum varieties and hybrids. Among the G. hirsutum genotypes, damage was significantly lower in varieties than in hybrids. However, no significant differences in damage were observed between Bt and non-Bt cotton hybrids. Abiotic factors had a major influence on the severity of damage; there was a significant and negative association of L. trifolii damage with open pan evaporation (E), maximum temperature, solar radiation and sunshine, and a significant and positive association with relative humidity and rainfall (RF). Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that 99% of the variation in L. trifolii damage was accounted for by RF, open pan E and relative humidity.

The legume pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner)) is one of the most important pests of pigeonpea. The levels of resistance to H. armigera in the cultivated germplasm are quite low, and therefore there is a need to introgress resistance genes from wild relatives into the cultigen. We evaluated a diverse array of wild relatives of pigeonpea for oviposition non-preference and antibiosis components of resistance to H. armigera. The accessions ICPW 1 (Cajanus acutifolius), ICPW 13 and 14 (C. albicans), ICPW 159 and 160 (C. sericeus), ICPW 68 (C. platycarpus), ICPW 83, 90, 94, 125, 137, 141 and 280 (C. scarabaeoides), ICPW 207 (Paracalyx scariosa) and ICPW 210 (Rhynchosia aurea) showed high levels of antixenosis for oviposition under no-choice, dual-choice and multi-choice conditions. High levels of antibiosis were observed when the larvae were reared on leaves and/or pods of C. acutifolius (ICPW 1), C. cajanifolius (ICPW 29), C. sericeus (ICPW 160), P. scariosa (ICPW 207), C. scarabaeoides and C. albicans. Lyophilized leaf or pod powder incorporated into the artificial diet can be used to assess antibiosis to H. armigera, and high levels of antibiosis to H. armigera were observed in diets with leaf and/or pod powder of some of the accessions of C. acutifolius, C. lineatus, C. sericeus, C. scarabaeoides, C. platycarpus, P. scariosa and R. aurea. Post-embryonic development period was prolonged in insects reared on leaves and pods of wild relatives of pigeonpea. The accessions showing high levels of antixenosis and antibiosis can be used to increase the levels and diversify the bases of resistance to H. armigera in pigeonpea.

Host-plant resistance is one of the major components of integrated pest management programmes against the noctuid pod borer Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) in chickpea. Survival and development of H. armigera on nine chickpea genotypes were compared using two food substrates, namely fresh leaves and pods, and artificial diets containing lyophilized leaf or pod powder of the same genotypes. Among the genotypes used, six showed different levels of resistance to H. armigera, while three were used as susceptible checks. Using leaves and pods, five of the resistant genotypes yielded lower larval weights compared to one of the susceptible checks used. Significant differences between four of the resistant and two of the susceptible genotypes were also observed when using artificial diets containing leaf or pod powder, but the rankings were different from that on the fresh leaves and pods. On both substrates, four resistant genotypes resulted in lower larval survival, pupation, adult emergence and fecundity when compared to one of the susceptible checks. A similar trend was also observed for larval survival and development when using F1 hybrids based on four of the resistant genotypes. Survival and development of H. armigera on the two food substrates, fresh leaves and pods and artificial diets with lyophilized leaf or pod powder, were highly correlated, suggesting that incorporation of lyophilized leaves or pods into the artificial diet can be used to assess antibiosis to H. armigera in chickpea.

Experiments were conducted to observe the feeding and food selection-behaviour of different instars of the pod-borer Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) in response to choices between the cultivated and a wild species of Cajanus. First and second instars fed upon a cultivated variety of Cajanus cajan in preference to a wild species, C. scarabaeoides and on flowers of C. cajan, rather than pods or leaves of C. cajan. First and second instars preferred pods of C. scarabaeoides with trichomes removed to pods with trichomes present. All instars fed upon pods of C. cajan rather than those of C. scarabaeoides. Solvent extraction of the pod surfaces affected the feeding of larvae, in some instances. They preferred the unextracted pods of C. cajan; the extracted pod of C. scarabaeoides (first and second instars) or the unextracted pod of C. scarabaeoides (fourth and fifth instars). Glass-fibre disc bioassays showed that the methanol, hexane and water extracts from the pod-surface of C. cajan stimulated the feeding of fifth instars. The experiments have shown that characteristics of C. cajan, such as either the compounds present or the type and distribution of trichomes on the plant surfaces, can determine the susceptibility of C. cajan to pod-borer larvae.

The ability to store different insect stadia for prolonged periods provides considerable flexibility and ability to conduct experiments properly. Therefore, studies were undertaken to determine the effect of storage temperature and duration on viability of eggs of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). The percentage egg hatch and incubation period were significantly (P=0.01) influenced by egg age, storage temperature, and storage duration. Egg hatch ranged from 0.0 to 96.8% across temperatures and storage durations. None of the eggs hatched when stored at −20 and 0°C. The regression model with the optimum Mallow Cp statistic for any of the identified linear and quadratic terms did not improve the precision of prediction in egg hatch beyond 67.0%. Forecasting of incubation period based on egg age, storage duration, and duration×temperature was quite effective (R2=84.2%). Day degrees required for egg hatching decreased with an increase in temperature from 10 to 27°C, and egg age from 0 to 3 days. The day degree requirements were highest for 0-day-old eggs at 10°C, and lowest at 27°C. Although the incubation period was higher, the hatchability was lower for 0- and 1-day-old eggs stored at constant 10°C, these eggs can be stored for 10 days at 10°C, with a hatchability of >75.0%. It was safer to store the H. armigera eggs for 10 days at 10°C, which will hatch within 1.6 to 2.0 days after restoration at 27°C with a hatchability of >75.0%. This information will be useful in planning and execution of experiments involving H. armigera on various aspects of research in entomology.

Sorghum is one of the most important cereal crops in the semi-arid tropics. Several insect pests damage it. The possibility of identifying genotypes with multiple resistance to these pests and transferring the relevant genes into high-yielding varieties and hybrids has been considered as an attractive approach to reducing yield losses. A set of 12 cytoplasmic male-sterile and maintainer lines, 12 restorer lines and their F1 hybrids were evaluated for resistance to sorghum shoot fly Atherigona soccata Rondani, spotted stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) and sugarcane aphid Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner) under field conditions. There were significant differences among the genotypes tested. A total of 50% of male-sterile lines, 41.7% maintainers, 58.3% restorers and 35.4% of the hybrids tested showed moderate to high level of resistance to the three pests. The male-sterile and restorer lines showing resistance to different insects can be exploited for developing hybrids with multiple insect resistance for cultivation by the resource-poor farmers in the semi-arid tropics.

Taxus baccata L. subsp. wallichiana (Zucc.) Pilger has come into prominence in recent times due to its uncontrolled harvesting from the Himalayan wilds for the extraction of the anti-cancer drug Taxol. It is a very slow growing tree with poor regeneration, and the extent of canopy damage is likely to have serious consequences on biomass yield, plant survival and natural regeneration by affecting 'seed' output. The present study in the Jageshwar area of the Central Himalaya aimed to determine the stand and canopy structure, microsite characteristics, extent of canopy removal, and regeneration in human-disturbed and undisturbed sites. The number of trees, saplings and seedlings varied amongst plots. Leaf area index and canopy volume increased with increasing circumference at breast height. Of the total canopy volume, 57.4% was found to have been removed from the study area (9.54 ha; representing about 8% of the total T. baccata habitat). Regeneration of the species was found to be better in moist and shady microsites at undisturbed locations than in disturbed sites. Efforts made thus far for its conservation, and future strategies are discussed.
