We report the synthesis and characterization of a soluble metal complex polymer for electroluminescent (EL) applications. The polymer was prepared by the reaction of a zinc Schiff base with 4,4′-diphenylmethane-diisocyanate. The polymer is amorphous and with glass transition temperature of 156 °C and is soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP). High optical quality films were obtained by spin-coating the polymer solution of THF. The zinc Schiff base, and the polyurethane (PU) shows strong photoluminescence under a UV-lamp illumination. Single and double layer EL devices consisting ITO/hole transfer layer (HTL)/PU/Al have been fabricated and characterized. The results indicated that the complex polymer could act as both electron transport and emissive layers for EL devices.

To fill the gap between molecular design and the architecture of three-dimensional functional structures, we propose novel hyper-structured molecules (HSMs) based on welldefined and topologically controlled molecular systems. To this end we have developed carbazole dendrimers, trimers, cyclic oligomers and chromogenic calix[4]arenes as HSMs. Photorefractivity was selected as the primary target function of these HSMs. Oligomers developed in our laboratory exhibit intrinsic photocarrier generation, transport, electro-optic, film-forming and poling properties. These multifunctional properties allow us to demonstrate optical image processing using optical phase conjugation. The topological shapes of indoaniline-derived calix[4]arenes were studied by hyper-Rayleigh scattering. The two indoaniline moieties in calix[4]arene derivatives were pre-aligned so as to enhance the net molecular hyperpolarizability. Besides dendric oligomers, cyclic oligomers can be used as a molecular platform which allows molecular level tuning of shape, size and topology for superior opto-electronic functions.

Self-assembled functional molecules in mesoporous materials are synthesized directly either by co-assembly of dye-bound surfactant of ferrocenyl TMA with silicate or Pc (phthalocyanine) molecules doped in the C16TMA micelles with oxides framework such as V2O5, MoO3, WO3 and SiO2. The process provides well-organized molecular dopoed mesoporous structure by direct and simple procedure.

We previously reported the synthesis and some properties of heterostructure nanoparticles, i.e. CdS coated with PbS (CdS/PbS). We report further characterization and investigation of the infrared photoluminescence (PL) of the CdS and coated CdS/PbS nanoparticles. This allows us to provide a more stringent test of the quantum confinement model. We consider the energy shift of the PL peak and the variation of the PL intensity correlated with the predictions of the quantum confinement model. The experimental results can be explained by this model of coated semiconductor nanoparticles.

New organic nonlinear optical crystal : dicyanovinyl anisole (DIVA) has been grown from vapor by low pressure sublimation and from saturated solution by solvent evaporation. Crystallographic structure and quadratic nonlinear optical properties were investigated. Molecular orientation in DIVA crystal with space group P21, is favorable for the highest possible value of bulk phase-matchable coefficient. Both type I and type II phase matched second harmonic generation (PMSHG) were observed from naturally grown faces of single crystals. Efficient PMSHG was achieved at a fundamental wavelength of 812 and 1064 nm. The efficient type I PMSHG coefficient was determined as deff = 4.9 × 10−8 esu = 40 × (d11 of α-quartz) at a wave.LH length of 1064 nm. Blue light generation was demonstrated by both PMSHG and sum-frequency mixing of the 812 nm laser with 1064 nm.

Second order molecular susceptibilities β of poly(γ – benzyl L–glutamate)(PBLG) and poly(γ – p–nitrobenzyl L–glutamate) (PNBLG) were determined by means of dc-induced second harmonic generation (dc-SHG technique in solutions at a wavelength of 1064nm as 1.5×10–−29 esu and −4.9×10−29 esu, respectively. Among PBLG, PNBLG and nitrobenzene, it was found that only PNBLG has negative value of β. It follows that the effect of nitrophenyl groups in side chains is dominant for β whereas the contribution of carbonyl groups in main chain is dominant for the permanent dipole moment μ in PNBLG.

This paper describes a new organic nonlinear material, piperoniridene ethyl cyano acetate which shows short cut-off wavelength, good nonlinearity (better than POM in powder) and good crystallinity. These features of this compound encourage its application in second harmonic generation (SHG) coupled with semiconductor laser.
