Recently developed quantitative models of psychopathology (i.e., Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology) identify an Antagonistic Externalizing spectrum that captures the psychological disposition toward criminal and antisocial behavior. The purpose of the present study was to examine relations between Antagonistic psychopathology (and associated Five-Factor model Antagonism/Agreeableness) and neural functioning related to social-cognitive Theory of Mind using a large sample (N = 973) collected as part of the Human Connectome Project (Van Essen et al., 2013a). No meaningful relations between Antagonism/Antagonistic Externalizing and Theory of Mind-related neural activity or synchrony were observed (p < .005). We conclude by outlining methodological considerations (e.g., validity of social cognition task and low test–retest reliability of functional biomarkers) that may account for these null results, and present recommendations for future research.

Genetic and environmental influences are both known to be causal factors in the development and maintenance of obesity. Stress related chronic stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and resulting increased glucocorticoid exposure is known to be an important pathophysiological mechanism in the development of obesity. We show that the natriuretic peptide system, that mediates endocrine and behavioural responses to stress, plays a role in the control of long-term body weight in chronically ethanol drinking mice. In mice lacking functional NPR-A receptors, physical, and in particular psychological stress leads to enhanced and continuous increase in body weight in homozygote NPR-A mice. The effect of repeated stress on body weight appeared rapidly and persisted throughout life. Over a longer period of time without stress, body weights do not differ between the different genotypes. Moreover, we could demonstrate that NPR-A homozygote mice show significant higher corticosterone levels following stress. Heterozygote animals show an intermediate phenotype concerning body weights and corticosterone levels following stress. Alterations in the NPR-A receptor gene may constitute a genetic risk factor for stress-induced eating and obesity.

Neurophysiological hyperactivation of cortical and subcortical brain areas has been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using functional imaging techniques and electroencephalography (EEG). Also sleep disturbances and delayed sleep phases have been associated with OCD symptomatology. However, vigilance regulation in OCD during the transition phase from wakefulness to sleep onset remains unclear. Therefore the aim of this study was to analyze EEG-source estimates and EEG vigilance regulation in OCD patients in comparison to healthy controls.

A 15 minute resting EEG was recorded in 30 unmedicated OCD patients and 30 healthy, age and gender matched controls. EEG power source estimates of the whole time series were computed by exact Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (eLORETA). Each consecutive one second EEG-segment was classified into one out of seven EEG-vigilance stages (0, A1, A2, A3, B1, B2/3, C) using Vigilance Algorithm Leipzig (VIGALL). The eLORETA analysis (log of F-ratios, p < 0.05, corrected for multiple comparison) revealed significantly increased delta power in the right superior frontal gyrus for OCD patients in comparison to healthy controls. Vigilance analysis yielded significantly increased amounts of high vigilance stage A2 (Mann-Whitney test, p < 0.001, corrected for multiple comparison) for OCD patients.

This study repeated findings of altered EEG-power in frontal areas in OCD patients. Alterations of EEG-vigilance regulation were found with increased amounts of high vigilance stage A2. This is in line with a hypothesis of cortical hyperactivation in OCD. The value of EEG-vigilance as a possible biological marker for e.g. treatment response should be focus of further studies.

Hypersonic air-breathing propulsion can improve cost and flexibility of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite launch missions. However, at the high flight Mach numbers required for access-to-space, performance margins are extremely tight. Techniques to improve mixing efficiency can push this technology forward. However, these are required to produce a minimal increase in losses and heat loads to be viable. The use of inlet-generated vortices in scramjets for mixing enhancement was previously studied. These vortices interact with the injected fuel plume, stretching it and increasing its effective surface for mixing. Moreover, these vortices are intrinsic to the flowfield. Therefore, contrary to other methods, when using inlet vortices mixing is enhanced without producing additional heat loads or losses. This work studies the vortex-injection interaction through numerical RANS simulations. A non-dimensional variable defining the quality of the plume shape for mixing purposes is proposed. This parameter is used to assess the effect of vortex intensity and injector location on fuel plume shape. The results show the ability of inlet vortices to modify fuel plume shape significantly increasing fuel mixing rate with minimal impact on losses.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpesvirus establishing lifelong persisting infection, which has been implicated in immunosenescence and mortality in the elderly. Little is known about how and when susceptibility to CMV infection is determined. We measured CMV seroprevalence in two genetically informative cohorts. From the Leiden Longevity Study (LLS) we selected long-lived sib-pairs (n=844) and their middle-aged offspring and the offspring's partners (n=1452). From the Longitudinal Study of Aging Danish Twins (LSADT) 604 (302 pairs) same-sex monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins aged 73–94 years were included (n=302 pairs). Offspring of the long-lived LLS participants had significantly lower seroprevalence of CMV compared to their partners (offspring: 42% vs. partners: 51%, P=0·003). Of 372 offspring living with a CMV-positive partner, only 58% were infected. The corresponding number for partners was 71% (P<0·001). In the LSADT, MZ and DZ twins had high and similar CMV-positive concordance rates (MZ: 90% vs. DZ: 88%, P=0·51) suggesting that shared family environment accounts for the similarity within twin pairs. Our findings suggest that susceptibility to CMV infection – even under continuous within-partnership exposure – appears to be more strongly influenced by early-life environment than by genetic factors and adult environment.

We describe the development of the HIV epidemic in Karonga District, Malawi over 22 years using data from population surveys and community samples. These data are used to estimate the trend in HIV prevalence, incidence and need for antiretroviral treatment (ART) using a simple mathematical model. HIV prevalence rose quickly in the late 1980s and early 1990s, stabilizing at around 12% in the mid-1990s. Estimated annual HIV incidence rose quickly, peaking in the early 1990s at 2·2% among males and 3·1% among females, and then levelled off at 1·3% among males and 1·1% among females by the late 1990s. Assuming a 2-year eligibility period, both our model and the UNAIDS models predicted 2·1% of adults were in need of ART in 2005. This prediction was sensitive to the assumed eligibility period, ranging from 1·6% to 2·6% if the eligibility period was instead assumed to be 1·5 or 2·5 years, respectively.

The combination of self-organized growth on high-index substrates with lithographic patterning and atomic hydrogen assistance allows the fabrication of GaAs quantum wires and quantum dots as well as coupled wire-dot arrays with superior structural and electronic properties by molecular beam epitaxy. The selectivity of patterned growth on high-index substrates differs qualitatively from that on low-index ones thus producing quantum wire and quantum dot structures which fulfill the stringent criteria on the geometrical features to be met for useful devices.

Crystal morphology of GaN layers grown on Si(111) evolves from whisker-like microcrystals to compact films as a function of the III/V ratio. Small changes in the III/V ratio (from Ga-rich to N-rich) during the growth of a compact layer result in the appearance of microcrystals on the top of the layer, indicating a sharp transition between the two growth regimes.

Four different morphologies are obtained by increasing the III/V ratio: a) completely columnar whisker-like samples exhibiting a pair of intense excitonic emissions at 3.471−3.478 eV; b) a mixture of compact regions with columnar microcrystals showing two pairs of excitonic emissionsnbsp c) compact layers with very small microcrystals on the top surface with a weaker dominant transition at 3.415 eV (±5meV) and, d) full compact and smooth layers with a single dominant excitonic emission at 3.466 eV. A combination of PL measurements with SEM photographs and CL imaging reveals that both pairs of emissions in samples b) come from the columnar microcrystals. The high energy pair (3.471−3.478eV) is attributed to the free-exciton A and a donor-bound exciton while the low energy pair (3.452−3.458eV) is assigned to acceptor-bound excitons associated to valence bands Γ9v and Γ7uv. Power and temperature dependence together with time-resolved data show that the dominant peak at 3.415eV (± 5meV) present in samples c) correspond to a donor-acceptor transition. CL measurements as a function of electron beam energy (depth) also indicate that this emission is more intense towards the interface between the layer and the sample. Finally, the excitonic emission in samples d) is shifted to lower energies due to residual biaxial tensile strain of thermal origin.

The optical properties of polycrystalline layers of CrSi2, MnSi1.73, β-FeSi2, and Ir3Si5 prepared by single layer and codeposition methods on different substrates are measured over the spectral range from the infrared to 24 eV. The spectral features in the interband region are attributed to transitions between Si p-metal d bonding and antibonding states mediated by energy dependent matrix elements. The IR spectra of CrSi2 and β-FeSi2, exhibiting six phonon modes, are simulated by an oscillator model.

The distribution of cryptogams and phanerogams and the microclimate of different habitats have been studied. It is shown that a forest community of phanerogams includes an assemblage of different microhabitats inhabited by different lichens and mosses. The distribution of lichens and mosses is governed by factors that are often of little importance to higher plants.

The growth and development of several lichens under natural conditions are studied with the SEM. The results permit observations on the influence of the microclimate and of pollution on thalline development and on some principles of lichen systematics.

A cyclic exchange between communities of mosses and the lichen Baeomyces rufus is described. The cushions of different mosses are supplanted by the lichen. After a lifespan of about 3 years the lichen dies off and the location is repossessed by mosses. The vegetative reproduction of the lichen is adapted to this ecological cycle.
