Social scientists use list experiments in surveys to estimate the prevalence of sensitive attitudes and behaviors in a population of interest. However, the cumulative evidence suggests that the list experiment estimator is underpowered to capture the extent of sensitivity bias in common applications. The literature suggests double list experiments (DLEs) as an alternative to improve along the bias-variance frontier. This variant of the research design brings the additional burden of justifying the list experiment identification assumptions in both lists, which raises concerns over the validity of DLE estimates. To overcome this difficulty, this paper outlines two statistical tests to detect strategic misreporting that follows from violations to the identification assumptions. I illustrate their implementation with data from a study on support toward anti-immigration organizations in California and explore their properties via simulation.

Throughout its range in Latin America, the jaguar Panthera onca is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and by conflict as a result of coexistence with people. This Near Threatened species is a top predator, and is often illegally hunted. Understanding people's attitudes and perceptions and the factors that could influence them is crucial for the conservation of this species. In this study we assess how knowledge, attitudes and perceptions among people in northern Argentina regarding jaguars vary depending on their level of education, age and occupation. We interviewed 810 people living in and around 10 protected areas in northern Argentina. Positive perceptions and attitudes towards the jaguar were associated with economic benefits that people may receive from the species’ presence, such as income from tourism. Unexpectedly, higher levels of formal education were not associated with more positive attitudes and perceptions. Negative attitudes and perceptions towards the species were determined by fear; people see jaguars as a threat to their lives. This study shows that the socio-economic factors that affect the level of tolerance towards jaguars are not related only to economic losses. Our findings provide information for the design, implementation and evaluation of jaguar conservation projects in Argentina.

How could a primitive credit market finance the early industrialisation of an underdeveloped economy? To answer this question, we use a hand-collected data set of mortgage loans raised by industrial firms in the city of São Paulo during the period 1866-1914. These mortgages were debt obligations collateralised by land, improvements, machinery and equipment. We argue that the mortgage credit market was a key source of funding for early industrial investments in Brazil. We find that industries were mainly funded by non-banking and domestic agents. The empirical evidence suggests that mortgages were an important proxy for industrial investment.

The inhibition of the attachment of bacteria to the intestine by receptor analogues could be a novel approach to prevent enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88-induced diarrhoea in piglets. The objective of the present study was to screen the ability of different feed ingredients (FI) to bind to ETEC K88 (adhesion test, AT) and to block its attachment to the porcine intestinal mucus (blocking test, BT) using in vitro microtitration-based models. In the AT, wheat bran (WB), casein glycomacropeptide (CGMP) and exopolysaccharides exhibited the highest adhesion to ETEC K88 (P< 0·001). In the BT, WB, CGMP and locust bean (LB) reduced the number of ETEC K88 attached to the intestinal mucus (P< 0·001). For WB and LB, fractionation based on their carbohydrate components was subsequently carried out, and each fraction was evaluated individually. None of the WB fractions reduced the adhesion of ETEC K88 to the mucus as did the original extract, suggesting that a protein or glycoprotein could be involved in the recognition process. With regard to the LB fractions, the water-extractable material reduced the adhesion of ETEC K88 (P< 0·001) to the mucus similar to the original extract (P< 0·001), indicating, in this case, that galactomannans or phenolic compounds could be responsible for the recognition process. In conclusion, among the FI screened, the soluble extracts obtained from WB, LB and CGMP exhibited the highest anti-adhesive properties against ETEC K88 in the BT. These results suggest that they may be good candidates to be included in diets of weaned piglets for the prevention of ETEC K88-induced diarrhoea.

Infection by larval Echinococcus granulosus is usually characterized by tight inflammatory control. However, various degrees of chronic granulomatous inflammation are also observed, reaching a high point in infection of cattle by the most prevalent parasite strain worldwide, which is not well adapted to this host species. In this context, epithelioid and multinucleated giant macrophages surround the parasite, and the secreted products of these cells often associate with the larval wall. The phagocyte-specific S100 proteins, S100A8, S100A9 and S100A12, are important non-conventionally secreted amplifiers of inflammatory responses. We have analysed by proteomics and immunohistochemistry the presence of these proteins at the E. granulosus larva-host interface. We found that, in the context of inflammatory control as observed in human infections, the S100 proteins are not abundant, but S100A9 and S100A8 can be expressed by eosinophils distal to the parasite. In the granulomatous inflammation context as observed in cattle infections, we found that S100A12 is one of the most abundant host-derived, parasite-associated proteins, while S100A9 and S100A8 are not present at similarly high levels. As expected, S100A12 derives mostly from the epithelioid and multinucleated giant cells. S100A12, as well as cathepsin K and matrix metalloproteinase-9, also expressed by E. granulosus-elicited epithelioid cells, are connected to the Th17 arm of immunity, which may therefore be involved in this granulomatous response.

Studies of hard biological materials such as marine shells, animal teeth, horns and bones have produced fascinating ideas for mimicking their micro/nanostructure in the lab. The nacre in the abalone shell has a well-defined organic/inorganic structure that has a fracture resistance that is much higher than the individual constituents. By using biocompatible materials we have fabricated zirconium nitride/ polymethylmethacrylate alternating layers that are based on the structure of nacre. A combination of DC-magnetron sputtering and pulsed laser deposition on (100) silicon substrates was used to fabricate multilayers in a single chamber without breaking the vacuum. The ZrN films showed nanocrystalline columnar growth on the silicon substrates or on the PMMA nanolayer. High resolution SEM analysis at the inorganic/organic interface revealed well formed, uniform thickness inorganic films which are separated by the polymeric layer (30-90 nm). The ratio of the ceramic/polymer is the same as in nacre. Nanoindentation hardness values of ˜ 20GPa were measured on both the ZrN single film, similar to published values, and the ZrN/PMMA composite layers and the elastic modulus remained constant, independent of the number of layers.

NGC 1241 is a Sy 2 galaxy with a 1.4 kpc circumnuclear ring (CNR) of star formation revealed in Paα. A 0.3 kpc long Paα emitting bar centered on the nucleus is present, apparently without associated absorption features. GEMINI (+QUIRC+Hokupa) IR pixel-photometry reveals instead an azimuthally symmetric (J−Ks) color which is redder at the nucleus than at the CNR. This property may well be due to the increasing importance of dust when going from the ring inward into the nucleus. Nevertheless the (V−H) color does not indicate special absorption conditions in the nucleus with respect to the CNR, and no absorption features are evident, as normally expected near emitting bars. Then, we propose as an alternative explanation an excess of C-stars in the nuclear region which decreases outwards until reaching the CNR and its colors. We have compared the pixel color-magnitude diagram with the 2-MASS (J−Ks) vs. Ks diagram for the Large Magellanic Cloud: about 5×102 C-stars and 2.5×104 AGB Oxygen-rich stars inside r∼50 pc, are enough to reproduce the observed nuclear tip in the diagram. This stars would release gas that, gravitationally bounded, pollutes the nuclear environment and could amount 10−2 to 10−1 M$_{\odot}$ yr−1 of fuel for the central engine during the lifetime of stars with masses 2 M$_{\odot}\lt M_{CStars} \lt 6{\rm M}_{\odot}$. This scenario may also explain the observed increased strength of the CN-bands in the stellar populations of Sy 2 nuclei, and the recent claim of a significant contribution of intermediate age stars to the optical continuum of low luminosity AGNs.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

We report the status of our study of the central region of M 83. Recently a binary mass concentration at the nucleus was suggested by Thatte et al. (2000), and we determined the possible position of the optically hidden mass concentration with 2D Hα kinematics. We continue our study of this region trough IR 3D spectroscopy performed with CIRPASS, attached to the Gemini South telescope. Almost 1500 spectra were obtained, centered in the wavelength 1.3 μm. The velocity field in a region of 13″ × 9″ around the optical nucleus is resolved, with 0.36″ (6.4 pc) sampling. We confirm that the optical nucleus of M 83 is not located at the most important center of symmetry of the velocity field.
