Educating patients on appropriate sleep hygiene behaviors is an essential step in treating the sleep disorder. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis offer rapid methods for managing anxiety and worry often associated with stressors, facilitating deep relaxation, and controlling mental over activity and decreasing physiological arousal. In 2007, Hauri etal. reported that one or two sessions of hypnosis is efficacious for the treatment of sleepwalking; nightmares, sleep terrors, nocturnal eating disorder, sleep-related grooming, and sleep talking. Parents can assist in the reduction of their child's nightmares by staying with them. Post-hypnotic suggestions included those for anxiety reduction, increased feelings of security, restful sleep, and instructed patients to reiterate these post-hypnotic suggestions during self-hypnosis practice at home. Hypnotherapy has a role in the behavioral treatment of sleep disorders and it is beneficial for hypnotherapists to gain specialty training in the treatment of sleep disorders.
