The objective of this study was to fit a hydrothermal germination model to germination data for a seedlot of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don). Seeds were incubated for 50 d at constant temperatures and water potentials (T = 12.5–32.5°C, Ψ = 0 to − 1.2 MPa). Most seeds completed germination within 50 d, but for low Ψ and/or non-optimal temperatures (T < 17.5°C, T>25°C) many seeds did not complete germination. In general, germination data conformed to the hydrothermal model. Departures from the model were encountered for slow-germinating seeds at suboptimal temperatures (T ≤ 20°C). To account for these departures, two alternative hydrothermal models were fitted with an additional term for an upwards shift in seed base water potential with increasing time to germination. The alternative models more correctly predicted germination time than the original model. Similarly, reduced percentage germination at supra-optimal temperatures (T>20°C) was explained by including a term in the hydrothermal model which shifted the base water potential of seeds upwards towards zero, which in turn reduced the predicted rate that hydrothermal time would be accumulated by seeds. The rate of this upwards shift in base water potential was dependent on time to complete germination and ambient water potential as well as supra-optimal temperature.

Widespread over England and Wales there are superficial deposits of a structureless and rubbly character that can be classed neither with true glacial deposits nor with river drifts. These are especially noticeable beyond the southern limit of glaciation, but they also occur, with less frequency, within the glaciated regions. Geologists in the early part of the last century, unhampered by pre-conceived ideas, frequently described such deposits, and in 1839 De la Beche, probably adopting a quarryman's term for overburden, gave certain occurrences the name Head. In later years Pleistocene classification, embracing both glacial and river drifts, took little or no account of these apparently irregular accumulations. Only those cases that presented special characters or were extensive and thick were shown, under a variety of names, upon geological maps.

Mature sheep fitted with rumen and duodenal cannulae, and fed a pelleted hay diet, were given supplementary phosphorus by continuous infusion into the rumen and the effects on salivary phosphorus secretion, net intestinal phosphorus absorption and faecal endogenous phosphorus excretion were studied. In control periods little phosphorus was excreted in the urine and little increase was seen in response to supplementation, the faeces being the major pathway for excretion. Increasing phosphorus intake led to an increase in net intestinal phosphorus absorption, a rise in plasma phosphate concentration, an increase in salivary phosphorus secretion and an increase in faecal endogenous phosphorus excretion. Overall net intestinal absorptive efficiency for phosphorus did, however, decrease as intake rose so that changes in faecal endogenous phosphorus excretion were in part due to increased salivary phosphorus secretion and in part to a reduction in overall absorptive efficiency. The significance of these changes in relation to the control of phosphorus balance in ruminants is discussed.

The nutritional potential of a number of raw tropical seeds was assessed in a series of feeding trials with rats. Seed lectin reactivity was also monitored, α-amylase and trypsin inhibitory activities were determined in some of the seeds.

Abelmosclius esculentus, Chenopodium quinoa, Delonix regia, Macroptilium lathyroides, Papaver sonmiferum, Parkia biglandulosa, Sesbania arabica, Terminalia catappa, Vigna subterranea, Vigna umbellata and Vigna unguiculata seeds supported moderate rat growth. The seeds contained only low levels of essentially non-toxic lectin, moderate amounts of trypsin inhibitors and negligible quantities of a-amylase inhibitors and they have great potential as dietary protein sources for man and animals.

Artocarpus altilis, Canavalia ensiformis, Canavalia maritima, Dioclea grandiflora, Phaseolus acutifolius, Phaseolus coccineus and Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Processor, cv. Rosinha G2 and cv. Carioca 80 seeds were toxic. These seeds contained high levels of potentially toxic lectins. Other antinutritional factors may also have contributed to the high oral toxicity of some of these seeds.

Albizia adinocephala, Albizia lebbeck, Bauhinia violacea, Cassia nodosa, Cassia tora, Dioclea sclerocarpa, Entada phaseoloides, Enterolobium cyclocarpum, Leucaena leucocephala and Moringa oleifera seeds were also highly toxic but had only low levels of essentially non-toxic lectins suggesting that the toxicity was due to other anti-nutritional factors.

Bauhinia reticulata, Macrotyloma uniflorum and Tamarindus indica proteins were poorly digested and utilized. The seeds contained low levels of lectins which agglutinated only rat and cattle erythrocytes which had been pre-treated with suitable proteases. Brownea macrophylla had a similar lectin reactivity.

The main purpose of this paper is to provide some carefully documented experimental observations of the subharmonic generation of edge waves over a plane beach by waves normally incident on the beach from the distant ocean. In order to establish experimentally the details of the subharmonic instability mechanism, it is important first to determine the properties of the primary wave field whose stability is to be investigated. Thus, a detailed appraisal has been made of the wave field established in the tank and over the beach in the absence of edge waves. These data have been particularly useful in defining the amplitudes of the incident- and reflected-wave fields at the toe of the beach, the magnitudes of which are central to the triggering of the edge-wave instability. Details are presented of the edge-wave field over the beach, as well as marginal stability curves and initial growth rates of the instability, the latter two of which are compared with theoretical estimates obtained from extant theories of the instability mechanism. Some experiments are also described in which edge waves were established as modes forced by topographical imperfections at the beach.

The increase in fractional rate of protein synthesis (Ks) in the skeletal muscle of growing rats during the transition from fasted to fed state has been explained by the synergistic action of a rise in plasma insulin and branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). Since growing lambs also exhibit an increase in Ks with level of feed intake, the objective of the present study was to determine if this synergistic relationship between insulin and BCAA also occurs in ruminant animals. Six 30 kg fasted (72 h) lambs (8 months of age) received each of four treatments, which were based on continuous infusion into the jugular vein for 6 h of: (1) saline (155 mmol NaCl/l); (2) a mixture of BCAA (0·778 μmol leucine, 0·640 μmol isoleucine and 0·693 μmol valine/min·kg); (3) 18·7 μmol glucose/min·kg (to induce endogenous insulin secretion); (4) co-infusion of BCAA and glucose. Within each period all animals received the same isotope of phenylalanine (Phe) as follows: (1) l-[1-13C]Phe; (2) l-phenyl-[ring 2H5]-alanine; (3) l-[15N]Phe; (4) l-[ring 2,6-3H]Phe. Blood was sampled serially during infusions to measure plasma concentrations of insulin, glucose and amino acids, and plasma free Phe isotopic activity; biopsies were taken 6 h after the beginning of infusions to determine Ks in m. longissimus dorsi and vastus muscle. Compared with control (saline-infused) lambs, Ks was increased by an average of 40 % at the end of glucose infusion, but this effect was not statistically significant in either of the muscles sampled. BCAA infusion, alone or in combination with glucose, also had no significant effect on Ks compared with control sheep. Ks was approximately 60 % greater for vastus muscle than for m. longissimus dorsi (P>0·01), regardless of treatment. It is concluded that there are signals other than insulin and BCAA that are responsible for the feed-induced increase in Ks in muscle of growing ruminant animals.

The effects of inclusion of different levels of raw kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) of high lectin content (27 g/kg meal) in a high-quality (lactalbumin) control diet were tested in nutritional trials on the growth and metabolism of obese Zucker (fafa) rats and their lean littermates in comparison with pair-fed controls. All diets contained 100 g total protein/kg and either 50 g lipids/kg (low fat) or 150 g lipids/kg (moderate fat). The growth of both obese and lean rats on bean diets was retarded by the daily bean intake in a dose-dependent manner. However, most of this was because bean-fed rats contained less body fat than the controls after 10 d. Thus, after feeding low-fat diets containing up to 130 g kidney bean/kg (lectin intake ≤ 0·2 g/kg body weight (BW) per d) in both 10 d and 70 d trials, the bodies of obese rats contained less fat but not protein than their pair-fed controls. Moreover, by increasing the lipid content of the diet to 150 g/kg, the level of bean inclusion could be increased to 280 g/kg (lectin intake ≥ 0·4 g/kg BW per d) without loss of body protein and skeletal muscle. Although these rats contained more body fat than those which were fed on low-fat diets, their weight reduction could be accounted for exclusively by reduced lipid content. In contrast, significant body protein loss occurred when the same diet of high lectin content was fed to lean littermates. Plasma insulin levels were significantly depressed in the obese Zucker rats on bean diets but the pancreas was not significantly enlarged nor its insulin content changed in 10 d trials. However, significant pancreatic growth occurred on long-term (70 d) bean feeding compared with pair-fed controls. The results suggest that, in addition to animal nutrition, it may also be possible to use the bean lectin as a dietary adjunct or therapeutic agent to stimulate gut function and ameliorate obesity if a safe and effective dose-range can be established for human subjects.

Whole-body protein synthesis, estimated by the irreversible loss rate procedure, and hind-leg protein metabolism determined by arterio-venous techniques were monitored in response to three nutritional conditions (approximately 0.6, 12 and 1.8 x energy maintenance (M)) in ten wether lambs (33 kg average live weight). In all lambs and treatments measurements were based on radiolabelled phenylalanine, but the terminal procedures (five at 0.6 x M and five at 1.8 x M) also included infusion of [1-13C]leucine; this permitted comparison of amino acids catabolized (leucine) and non-metabolized (phenylalanine) by the hind-limb tissues. Whole-body protein synthesis increased with intake and the relationship with energy expenditure was slightly lower than that reported previously for pigs and cattle. The efficiency of protein retention: protein synthesis did not exceed 0.25 between the two intake extremes. Effects of intake on amino acid oxidation were similar to those observed for cattle. Hind-limb protein synthesis also increased significantly (P < 0.001) in response to intake. Estimates of protein gain, from net uptake values, indicated that the tissues made a greater proportional contribution to total protein retention above M and to protein loss below M, emphasizing the role played by muscle tissue in providing mobile protein stores. The rates of protein synthesis calculated depended on the selection of precursor (blood) metabolite, but rates based on leucine always exceeded those based on phenylalanine when precursor from the same pool was selected. The incremental efficiency of protein retained: protein synthesis was apparently unity between 0.6 and 1.2 x M but 0.3 from 1.2 to 1.8 x M. Blood flow through the iliac artery was also proportional to intake. Leucine and oxo-acid catabolism to carbon dioxide increased with intake such that the metabolic fate of the amino acid was distributed in the proportion 2:1 between protein gain and oxidation. The rates of oxidation were only 1–3% the reported capacity of the rate-limiting dehydrogenase enzyme in muscle, but sufficient enzyme activity resides in the hind-limb adipose tissue to account for such catabolism

A method has been developed based on stable isotopes and biopsy procedures which allows the large-dose procedure for measurement of protein synthesis to be applied in serial studies to farm species. Measurements of total nitrogen retention and protein synthesis in m. longissimus dorsi and m. vastus lateralis were made in five wether lambs (40–44 kg) infused intravenously, successively, with vehicle (10 d); testosterone (15 d; 9 mg/d); vehicle (15 d). N retention was improved by testosterone infusion (+2.9 g N/d; a 96% improvement total over control periods). Muscle protein synthesis was not significantly altered by exogenous hormone administration, nor were RNA:protein, RNA:DNA or protein: DNA. The implication of the developed procedure for dynamic studies in accessible tissues of large animals is discussed.

The unintentional and intentional incorporation of carbon has been investigated in order to understand both the growth kinetics as well as develop new and useful carbon doping sources. We present in this study a systematic investigation of the use of halomethanes during the MOVPE based growth of GaAs. We have used 13C tagged trimethyl gallium, AsH3, together with non-isotopically tagged halomethane sources, in order to determine the source and mechanism of the carbon incorporation. The carbon concentration was determined by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). The carbon incorporation in the unintentionally doped material is compared to that obtained with the series of halomethanes, CHxI4-x (x=0,2-4), the chlorine analogs, CHC13 and CCI4, and the bromine containing compounds, CHBr3 and CBr4 which are used to intentionally introduce carbon in the epitaxial GaAs. The incorporation of carbon is studied here as a function of the halogen/H ratio in the source material and on the halogen ligand on the carbon nucleus. The standard growth parameters of susceptor temperature and gas phase composition were varied in order to discern the useful growth parameter regimes for these compounds.

The solubility behaviour of uranium(VI) has been studied in a number of waters representative of the pore waters to be expected in candidate repository backfill concretes and also in solutions of calcium and sodium hydroxides. The sorption of uranium has been studied on one of these candidates, a Portland cement with a slag filler. The same cement has been hydrothermally treated to simulate the temperature conditions in the repository and the product used for comparative studies.

The paper describes the experimental measurements and the results. The aqueous concentration of uranium over the uranates formed in the presence of sodium and calcium hydroxides was constant above pH 7 at 3 × 10−6 M. In the concrete pore waters the solubility of uranium was equal to or lower than this value. The distribution coefficient, Rd, for the sorption of uranium onto the slag cement was 2.5 × 104 ml g−1, and was increased by a factor two after hydrothermal treatment.

1. Five Greyface wethers (42–45 kg) fed on various fixed amounts of dried grass pellets (either approximately 1·3 times maintenance or 2 times maintenance) by means of belt-type continuous feeders were housed in opencircuit respiration chambers for periods of 45 d. Between days 15 and 35 they received daily oral doses of 1·5 mg of the β-adrenergic agonist clenbuterol (adsorbed on to the feed). Continuous energy and nitrogen balance measurements each of 5 d duration were conducted throughout the chamber confinement.

2. On six occasions (twice during the 15 d pre-clenbuterol period, on days +4, +11 and +18 of clenbuterol administration and once during the post-treatment period) animals were infused with [l-14C]leucine to determine the rates of leucine oxidation and the amounts of leucine available for protein synthesis.

3. Clenbuterol administration caused a marked increase in N retention (2–3 g N/d; P < 0·001) throughout the 20 d treatment period. It also increased (P < 0·001) the energy expenditure of the animals (on average by 1·1 MJ/d over the first 5 d, compared with immediate pretreatment values, and 0·6 MJ/d over the 20 d period, compared with the mean of pre- and post-treatment control values). The effect of treatment was calculated to result, on average, in the daily retention of 19 (SE 1·5) g more protein and 30 (SE 5·5) g less fat.

4. During clenbuterol treatment leucine oxidation was reduced (P < 0·01). However, values for the amounts of leucine available for protein synthesis were equivocal, with an increase (P < 0·001) on day 11 of treatment, but no change on days 4 and 18.

5. Withdrawal of the clenbuterol resulted in rapid alterations of N and energy metabolism towards those expected of control animals of that weight.

1. The effects of progressive reduction in food intake from 1.6 x maintenance (1.6 M) to approximately maintenance (M′) and then to zero (fasting) on energy expenditure and leucine kinetics were examined in Hereford x Friesian finishing beef steers.

2. Estimates of whole body protein synthesis and protein oxidation were obtained from the specific radioactivity of free leucine in blood and of exhaled carbon dioxide during continuous infusions of [I-14C]leucine. Protein synthesis contributed a minimum of 0.19 to total heat production across all three intakes.

3. The apparent efficiencies with which synthesized protein was retained were 0.28 between 1.6 M and M′ and 1.04 between M′ and fasting. The greater efficiency below M′ reflected probable use of amino acids as energy sources during fasting, which would be spared as soon as feed was available.

4. Nitrogen derived from protein oxidation made a minor contribution to urine N at both 1.6 M (0.45) and M′ (0.36) but provided a significant proportion to the increment in urine N between intakes (0.68).

5. Amino acid absorption, estimated indirectly as the sum of protein oxidation and protein retention, represented only 0.28 of N intake at M′ and 0.38 at 1.6 M but the contribution to the increment in N intake between these two diet levels was greater (0.56).

6. The estimated efficiency of utilization of absorbed amino acids between M′ and 1.6 M was 0.45.

Organometallic vapor phase epitaxy (OMVPE) has achieved remarkable recent success, becoming the most promising technique for the ultimate production of III/V materials and device structures. Unfortunately, our understanding of the growth process remains primitive. In this paper we report a new technique for tracing the reactions by conducting the epitaxial growth in a D2 ambient using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to analyze the product molecules. The pyrolysis reactions were studied for PH3, both alone and in the presence of trimethylindium (TMIn), and for TMIn alone and in the presence of PH3. For the reactants alone, the PH3 pyrolysis is completely heterogeneous at the InP surface, while TMIn pyrolyzes homogeneously in the gas phase. For TMIn and PH3 together, the reaction mechanism is entirely different; the pyrolysis temperatures for both PH3 and TMIn are lowered. Since the reaction produces only CH4 molecules, with a complete absence of CH3D at high ratios of PH3 to TMIn, we hypothesize that InP growth is initiated by the direct interaction of TMIn and PH3 molecules, either in the vapor phase at normal growth temperatures or at the InP surface at temperatures as low as 250°C.

1. The effects on growth performance, energy and nitrogen retention, and leucine metabolism of a subcutaneous combined implant of 140 mg trenbolone acetate (TBA)+20 mg oestradiol-17β (OE) have been examined in Hereford × Friesian beef steers (280–520 kg). Comparisons were made both with the same animals before implantation and with untreated control animals maintained under similar physiological and nutritional conditions.

2. Over a 10 week period the implanted steers showed an improvement in rate of live-weight gain (LWG) of 0.5–0.6 with an even greater proportional increase in N retention compared with control animals. Total energy retention was unaffected and thus the ratio, protein energy: total energy gain was 0.43 for implanted steers compared with 0.26 for untreated animals.

3. Estimates of protein synthesis and protein oxidation were obtained from the specific radioactivities of blood free-leucine and exhaled carbon dioxide during continuous infusions of [1-14C]leucine. Whole-body protein synthesis, based on metabolic size, and amino acid fractional oxidation remained similar for control steers throughout the experiment. Steroid-treated steers showed a slight decline in synthesis which was significant (P < 0.05) at week + 5 post-implant while amino acid oxidation was significantly lower at weeks +2 (P < 0.01) and + 5 (P < 0.05) compared with control animals. The ratio, protein deposition: protein synthesis was 0.05 for control animals but 0.08–0.10 for steroid-treated animals after implantation.

4. There was a slight decrease in urinary NT-methylhistidine elimination after implantation which suggested that muscle protein degradation may be reduced although the estimated decrease was insufficient to account for the total improvement in growth rate and N retention.

5. The results suggest that for both control and treated steers, less than 0.5 of total urine N elimination was derived directly from tissue catabolism of protein and amino acids.

6. The combined action of the exogenous steroids in the promotion of protein gain, primarily through a decrease in total protein degradation with little alteration of total energy retention, is compared with present understanding of the role of the endogenous sex hormones.
