Objectives: UK policy priority is to support people with dementia (PLwD) to live at home for longer. Initial clinical assessment involves evaluating and managing risk to enable PLwD to live safely and well at home. Risk assessment scales are needed to identify, manage and reduce risk within contemporary dementia practice. The “Islington Dementia Navigator Risk Assessment Tool” (IDNRAT) is used by specialist and non-specialist staff to stratify the level of risk for PLwD and inform a risk management plan and the frequency of follow-up. We assessed whether IDNRAT enables risk detection and whether the risk intervention derived from it is implemented and improves the safety of people living at home with dementia.

Methods: A mixed Methods study to evaluate IDNRAT’s validity, and the feasibility and acceptability of the resulting risk management plan. We investigated the use of the IDNRAT to: (i) detect risk (concurrent validity) and measure the reliability of the tool; (ii) contribute to risk reduction (primary outcome was numbers of decisions implemented); (iii) explore patients’ and carers’ experience of risk stratification.

Results: We found risk stratification scores (n = 119) derived from IDNRAT and compared with gold standard clinical risk assessments showed concordance between clinicians’ ratings. Joint Dementia navigator and researcher interviews (n = 19) showed consistency between the different assessor scores demonstrating IDNRAT has good reliability. Care-plan data showed most participants (n = 275) scored in the low-risk band of IDNRAT (78.9%) at baseline assessment and risk severity ratings (red/amber/green) reduced over the 6–12-month time period. PLwD (n = 19) and family carers (n = 17) had differing perceptions about risk and the PLwD’s susceptibility to risk. Overall, participants found the risk assessment acceptable, were able to identify risks and felt included in decision-making processes.

Conclusions: We found that the IDNRAT used by non-specialist practitioners (dementia navigators) does enable people with dementia to live safely at home in terms of risk- identification, implemented risk enablement decisions and acceptability. IDNRAT is a valid risk assessment tool, which offers a tailored approach to the management of risk, and over 80% of care-plan decisions were implemented. This is consistent with best practice and the tool has potential for wider use.

On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Corpus Christi, Texas. The ensuing unprecedented flooding throughout the Texas coastal region affected millions of individuals.1 The statewide response in Texas included the sheltering of thousands of individuals at considerable distances from their homes. The Dallas area established large-scale general population sheltering as the number of evacuees to the area began to amass. Historically, the Dallas area is one familiar with “mega-sheltering,” beginning with the response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.2 Through continued efforts and development, the Dallas area had been readying a plan for the largest general population shelter in Texas. Many students treated for cancer experience significant challenges in maintaining their education during and beyond cancer treatment. Late effects of cancer treatment combined with prolonged periods of missed schooling can dramatically impact upon a student's physical, cognitive and social development. This study examined the relationship between cancer type, cancer treatment, time absent from school, school services and academic areas affected by the cancer diagnosis. An online survey was completed by 80 parents, representing 80 children with cancer, and 136 siblings. Twenty-four parents/carers participated in five focus groups held across rural and regional New South Wales (NSW). Additional difficulties for children and adolescents post cancer treatment were reported by 62.3% of parents and included difficulties with attention, mobility, hearing and fine motor skills. Further areas of specific academic need were identified in mathematics, memory, concentration and confidence. Despite the high level of additional need, only 9.3% of students were reported as receiving additional funding support upon their return to school. Emotional descriptions referring to turmoil, lack of understanding and lack of support were contained within the focus group transcriptions. Results indicated a high level of specific educational and psychosocial needs for this group of students who, having overcome a potentially fatal illness, must continue to fight to learn.

New quenched-in face-centred cubic fluorite-type materials were synthesised in the Bi2O3–Yb2O3–PbO system. After annealing in air at 500 °C for up to 200 h, each material underwent a conductivity-lowering structural transformation, thus making them unsuitable for use as solid electrolytes in solid-oxide fuel cells. For example, (BiO1.5)0.80(YbO1.5)0.17(PbO)0.03 underwent a fluorite- to Bi17Yb7O36-type orthorhombic transformation, indicative of long-range cation ordering, and (BiO1.5)0.80(YbO1.5)0.11(PbO)0.09 underwent a fluorite- to β-Bi2O3-type tetragonal transformation, indicative of long-range 〈001〉 oxide-ion vacancy ordering.

We present the results of an approximately 6 100 deg2 104–196 MHz radio sky survey performed with the Murchison Widefield Array during instrument commissioning between 2012 September and 2012 December: the MWACS. The data were taken as meridian drift scans with two different 32-antenna sub-arrays that were available during the commissioning period. The survey covers approximately 20.5 h < RA < 8.5 h, − 58° < Dec < −14°over three frequency bands centred on 119, 150 and 180 MHz, with image resolutions of 6–3 arcmin. The catalogue has 3 arcmin angular resolution and a typical noise level of 40 mJy beam− 1, with reduced sensitivity near the field boundaries and bright sources. We describe the data reduction strategy, based upon mosaicked snapshots, flux density calibration, and source-finding method. We present a catalogue of flux density and spectral index measurements for 14 110 sources, extracted from the mosaic, 1 247 of which are sub-components of complexes of sources.

Significant new opportunities for astrophysics and cosmology have been identified at low radio frequencies. The Murchison Widefield Array is the first telescope in the southern hemisphere designed specifically to explore the low-frequency astronomical sky between 80 and 300 MHz with arcminute angular resolution and high survey efficiency. The telescope will enable new advances along four key science themes, including searching for redshifted 21-cm emission from the EoR in the early Universe; Galactic and extragalactic all-sky southern hemisphere surveys; time-domain astrophysics; and solar, heliospheric, and ionospheric science and space weather. The Murchison Widefield Array is located in Western Australia at the site of the planned Square Kilometre Array (SKA) low-band telescope and is the only low-frequency SKA precursor facility. In this paper, we review the performance properties of the Murchison Widefield Array and describe its primary scientific objectives.

Flat radio spectrum quasars from the Parkes half-Jansky survey show an enormous range of optical to near-IR colors. The spectra of these quasars suggest that this diversity is probably due to variable amounts of dust somewhere along the line of sight.

Recently, a substantial population of Blazar-like sources exhibiting sharp near-infrared cutoffs and hence exceedingly reddened optical to near-infrared colours (Bj – K ≿ 6) have been discovered in a complete sample of flat spectrum radio sources (Drinkwater et al. 1996). We argue that such “red” colours cannot be due to a synchrotron radiation mechanism alone.
