We describe system verification tests and early science results from the pulsar processor (PTUSE) developed for the newly commissioned 64-dish SARAO MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa. MeerKAT is a high-gain ( ${\sim}2.8\,\mbox{K Jy}^{-1}$ ) low-system temperature ( ${\sim}18\,\mbox{K at }20\,\mbox{cm}$ ) radio array that currently operates at 580–1 670 MHz and can produce tied-array beams suitable for pulsar observations. This paper presents results from the MeerTime Large Survey Project and commissioning tests with PTUSE. Highlights include observations of the double pulsar $\mbox{J}0737{-}3039\mbox{A}$ , pulse profiles from 34 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from a single 2.5-h observation of the Globular cluster Terzan 5, the rotation measure of Ter5O, a 420-sigma giant pulse from the Large Magellanic Cloud pulsar PSR $\mbox{J}0540{-}6919$ , and nulling identified in the slow pulsar PSR J0633–2015. One of the key design specifications for MeerKAT was absolute timing errors of less than 5 ns using their novel precise time system. Our timing of two bright MSPs confirm that MeerKAT delivers exceptional timing. PSR $\mbox{J}2241{-}5236$ exhibits a jitter limit of $<4\,\mbox{ns h}^{-1}$ whilst timing of PSR $\mbox{J}1909{-}3744$ over almost 11 months yields an rms residual of 66 ns with only 4 min integrations. Our results confirm that the MeerKAT is an exceptional pulsar telescope. The array can be split into four separate sub-arrays to time over 1 000 pulsars per day and the future deployment of S-band (1 750–3 500 MHz) receivers will further enhance its capabilities.

Gaia DR2 was released in April 2018 and contains a photometric catalogue of more than 1 billion sources. This release contains colour information in the form of integrated BP and RP photometry in addition to the latest G-band photometry. The level of uncertainty can be as good as 2 mmag with some residual systematics at the 10 mmag level. The addition of colour information greatly enhances the value of the photometric data for the scientific community. A high level overview of the photometric processing, with a focus on the improvements with respect to Gaia DR1, was given. The definition of the Gaia photometric system, a crucial part of the calibration of the photometry, was also explained. Finally, some of the photometric improvements expected for the next data release were described.

The Gaia Science Alerts project (GSA) aims to augment a precision survey of the Milky Way with a controlled, precision survey of all classes of transient phenomena. While onboard BP/RP spectra from Gaia will ultimately allow us to classify many Gaia Alerts based on Gaia data alone, in the initial phases of the GSA project it is necessary to verify and classify discoveries with ground-based spectroscopic followup. In this article, we describe a subset of the ongoing Gaia Alerts followup programmes, and some of the initial science results from this work.

Despite the development of consensus-based frameworks to define cancer cachexia, the validity and usefulness of these frameworks are relatively unknown. The aim of the present study was to study the presence of pre-cachexia and cachexia in patients with stage III non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) by using a cancer-specific framework and a general framework for cachexia, and to explore the prognostic value of pre-cachexia and cachexia. In forty patients at diagnosis of stage III NSCLC, weight loss, fat-free mass, handgrip strength, anorexia and serum biochemistry, assessed before the first chemotherapy, were used to define ‘cancer cachexia’ or ‘cachexia’. The cancer-specific framework also classified for pre-cachexia and refractory cachexia. Additionally, quality of life was assessed by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer – Quality of Life Questionnaire C30. Groups were compared using independent t tests, ANOVA, Kaplan–Meier and Cox survival analyses. Based on the cancer-specific framework, pre-cachexia was present in nine patients (23 %) and cancer cachexia was present in seven patients (18 %). Cancer cachexia was associated with a reduced quality of life (P= 0·03) and shorter survival (hazard ratio (HR) = 2·9; P= 0·04). When using the general framework, cachexia was present in eleven patients (28 %), and was associated with a reduced quality of life (P= 0·08) and shorter survival (HR = 4·4; P= 0·001). In conclusion, pre-cachexia and cachexia are prevalent in this small population of patients at diagnosis of stage III NSCLC. For both frameworks, cachexia appears to be associated with a reduced quality of life and shorter survival. Further studies are warranted to more extensively explore the validity and prognostic value of these new frameworks in cancer patients.

The Gaia Attitude Model (GAM) is a simulation package that is developed to achieve a detailed understanding of the Gaia spacecraft attitude. It takes into account external physical effects and considers internal hardware components controlling the satellite. The main goal of the Gaia mission is to obtain extremely accurate astrometry, and this requires a good knowledge of Gaia’s behaviour as a spinning rigid body under the influence of various disturbances.

A detailed study of the Hipparcos attitude exposed events in the satellite’s motion (micro-meteorite hits and clanks) that require special adaptations in the attitude reconstruction modelling. Identifying these events in the data stream, and incorporating them in a specially designed dynamical attitude modelling, has led to an overall reduction in the attitude reconstruction noise from 3 mas down to 0.6 mas. Considering that the main noise contribution on the astrometric data for stars brighter than magnitude 8 in the Hipparcos catalogue originated from the attitude reconstruction, and that this noise led to correlated parallax errors for neighbouring stars, it was decided to redo the astrometric reductions of the Hipparcos data. This was completed in 2007, and resulted in the publication of a new catalogue. The lesson to be learnt for Gaia is, that incorporating a detailed understanding of the satellite’s motions in the attitude modelling can have a significant impact on the overall reliability of the final astrometric data produced by the mission.

Major surgery induces an immuno-inflammatory response accompanied by oxidative stress that may impair cellular function and delay recovery. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of an enteral supplement, containing glutamine and antioxidants, on circulating levels of immuno-inflammatory markers after major gastrointestinal tract surgery. Patients (n 21) undergoing major gastrointestinal tract surgery were randomised in a single-centre, open-label study. The effects on circulating levels of immuno-inflammatory markers were determined on the day before surgery and on days 1, 3, 5 and 7 after surgery. Major gastrointestinal surgery increased IL-6, TNF receptor 55/60 (TNF-R55) and C-reactive protein (CRP). Surgery reduced human leucocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR) expression on monocytes. CRP decrease was more pronounced in the first 7 d in the treatment group compared with the control group. In the treatment group, from the moment Module AOX was administered on day 1 after surgery, TNF receptor 75/80 (TNF-R75) level decreased until the third post-operative day and then stabilised, whereas in the control group the TNF-R75 level continued to increase. The results of the present pilot study suggest that enteral nutrition enriched with glutamine and antioxidants possibly moderates the immuno-inflammatory response (CRP, TNF-R75) after surgery.

The excretory/secretory (E/S) products of adult Haemonchus contortus comprise of at least 15 polypeptides with molecular weights ranging from 10 to > 100 kDa. These E/S products induce an immune response in infected Texel sheep, as demonstrated by specific IgGI levels and a significant lymphocyte proliferation index. Moreover, immunoblotting analysis revealed that sera of primary H. contortus-infected sheep specifically recognize a 24 kDa E/S product. In addition, sera of challenged sheep react strongly with a 15 kDa E/S product. The other E/S products of H. contortus showed immunoreactivity with serum samples of Haemonchus-infected sheep as well as with samples of sheep harbouring other trichostrongylid infections. These cross-reacting epitopes are the main cause of the lack of specificity of an E/S material- based ELISA. This ELISA can differentiate Haemonchus infections from Nematodirus battus infections, but not from Ostertagia circumcincta or Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections.

ELSA (European Leadership in Space Astrometry) is an EU-funded research project 2006–2010, contributing to the scientific preparations for the Gaia mission while training young researchers in space astrometry and related subjects. Nine postgraduate (PhD) students and five postdocs have been recruited to the network. Their research focuses on the principles of global astrometric, photometric, and spectroscopic measurements from space, instrument modelling and calibration, and numerical analysis tools and data processing methods relevant for Gaia.

Gaia is an ESA cornerstone mission which will observe some billion stars in the galaxy enabling micro-arcsec astrometric catalogues to be constructed. In addition Gaia will produce high quality photometric and spectroscopic catalogues.

The data processing tasks are large and complex. A European consortium has been formed - the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC). This paper describes the form of the UK Gaia Data Flow System Project contribution to the DPAC.

Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. While the mission is built and operated by ESA and an industrial consortium, the data processing is entrusted to a consortium formed by the scientific community, which was formed in 2006 and formally selected by ESA one year later. The satellite will downlink around 100 TB of raw telemetry data over a mission duration of 5 years from which a very complex iterative processing will lead to the final science output: astrometry with a final accuracy of a few tens of microarcseconds, epoch photometry in wide and narrow bands, radial velocity and spectra for the stars brighter than 17 mag. We discuss the general principles and main difficulties of this very large data processing and present the organization of the European Consortium responsible for its design and implementation.

The formal errors on the astrometric data in the 1997 publication of the Hipparcos catalogue are, for stars brighter than about magnitude 9, largely the result of inaccuracies in the description of the along-scan attitude of the satellite. A detailed study of the dynamics of the Hipparcos satellite has led to a much improved understanding and modelling of the satellite attitude, taking into account peculiarities in the rotation of the payload (scan-phase jumps) as well as the detections of small hits. A new reduction of the Hipparcos data was initiated, in which the attitude modelling is a direct description of the dynamics of the satellite. In this so-called fully-dynamic attitude modelling the underlying torques acting on the satellite are reconstructed, and rates and error angles are obtained through integrations. Both the hits and the scan-phase jumps could be taken into account in the context of this model. The new model, including the provisions for discontinuities, led to a factor five reduction in the attitude noise. A new reduction, based on a global iterative solution like is also planned for Gaia, was started in 2004, and completed, after some 15 iterations, in 2007. In the process of this reduction, also the sensitivity of the solution to optimal connectivity between the data in the two fields of view was exposed and taken care of, as well as a couple of small-scale calibrations. The latter had not been possible to solve for in the original reductions. In the catalogue that resulted from this new reduction, the errors on the astrometric data for all but stars brighter than magnitude 4, are dominated by photon noise. Error-correlation levels in the underlying abscissa data are down by more than an order of magnitude, and play no longer any significant role. This feature very much simplifies the analysis of, for example, wide-binary stars and open cluster data.

The ESA space astrometry mission Gaia will measure the positions, parallaxes and proper motions of the 1 billion brightest stars on the sky. Expected accuracies are in the 7–25 μas range down to 15 mag and sub-mas accuracies at the faint limit (20 mag). The astrometric data are complemented by low-resolution spectrophotometric data in the 330–1000 nm wavelength range and, for the brighter stars, radial velocity measurements. The scientific case covers an extremely wide range of topics in galactic and stellar astrophysics, solar system and exoplanet science, as well as the establishment of a very accurate, dense and faint optical reference frame. With a planned launch around 2012 and an (extended) operational lifetime of 6 years, final results are expected around 2021. We give a brief overview of the science goals of Gaia, the overall project organisation, expected performance, and some key technical features and challenges.

Several studies have described reduced plasma concentrations of arginine, the substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). No information on the plasma concentrations of the endogenous NOS inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in patients with NEC is currently available. We investigated whether plasma concentrations of arginine, ADMA, and their ratio differ between premature infants with and without NEC, and between survivors and non-survivors within the NEC group. In a prospective case–control study, arginine and ADMA concentrations were measured in ten premature infants with NEC (median gestational age 193 d, birth weight 968 g), and ten matched control infants (median gestational age 201 d, birth weight 1102 g), who were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In the premature infants with NEC, median arginine and ADMA concentrations (μmol/l), and the arginine:ADMA ratio were lower compared to the infants without NEC: 21·4 v. 55·9, P = 0·001; 0·59 v. 0·85, P = 0·009 and 36·6 v. 72·3, P = 0·023 respectively. In the NEC group, median arginine (μmol/l) and the arginine:ADMA ratio were lower in non-surviving infants than in surviving infants: 14·7 v. 33·8, P = 0·01 and 32·0 v. 47·5, P = 0·038 respectively. In premature infants with NEC not only the NOS substrate arginine, but also the endogenous NOS inhibitor ADMA and the arginine:ADMA ratio were lower than in infants without NEC. In addition, low arginine and arginine:ADMA were associated with mortality in infants with NEC. Overall, these data suggest that a diminished nitric oxide production may be involved in the pathophysiology of NEC, but this needs further investigation.

An internationally agreed and validated set of phages is used worldwide for the typing of strains of Staphylococcus aureus of human origin. However, because of the sometimes reduced susceptibility of methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) to these phages, some of the national typing centres use locally isolated and characterized sets of experimental phages. In this trial, 42 such phages were distributed to 6 centres and tested against 744 isolates of MRSA with the intention of defining a phage set to augment the international set. The use of these experimental phages increased the percentage typability from 75% with the international set to 93% and the number of identifiable lytic patterns from 192 to 424. A subset of 10 experimental phages was selected. When this subset was compared with the experimental panel, the typability rate was 91% and 370 distinct patterns were obtained. This subset of phages has been distributed for international trial.

Obervations of the positions of Europa (J2) and Titan (S6) by Hipparcos, and Ganymede (J3) and Callisto (J4) by Tycho are analysed to give checks on the latest JPL ephemerides of the planets Jupiter and Saturn.

The observed positions of the satellites are compared with DExxx, using the G5 theory of the Galilean satellites and D.B. Taylor’s theory ofTitan to calculate their offsets from the barycentres of the two systems.

Each Tycho observation can be resolved into RA and Dec because the slitsare inclined to the scan direction. Hipparcos, on the other hand, which hasa uni-directional scan, requires a minimum of two (preferably orthogonal) scans to resolve the offsets into RA and Dec. We have subdivided the Hipparcos observations in time and solved for corrections to DExxx at several epochs over the period of the mission.

The Hipparcos observations of J2, and Tycho of J3 and J4, put tight constraints on the orbit of Jupiter, and agree closely with the series of ground-based observations made by the Carlsberg Meridian Telescope. In particular, they help to resolve a problem in the declination of Jupiter associated with larger than expected errors in the tracking of Voyager II and radio positions from the VLA.

This contribution is intended as a ‘rough guide’ to the Hipparcos Catalogue for the non-expert user. We shall focus here on the interpretation of the measured parallaxes in terms of distances and luminosities of stars, and on the use of the covariance matrix of the errors on the astrometric parameters. Issues not addressed here are the level at which one may expect systematic errors to occur in the Hipparcos Catalogue, and the correlation of astrometric parameters over a given region of the sky. For more details on the latter two subjects we refer to the documentation of the Hipparcos Catalogue (ESA, 1997) and to Brown et al. (1997). We note that at present the Hipparcos Catalogue contains no identified systematic errors.

Partially purified low molecular weight antigens obtained by gel filtration of whole worm homogenates or total adult excretory–secretory (ES) products were tested in a vaccination experiment to determine their ability to induce protective immunity against Haemonchus contortus in sheep. Sheep were challenged with 20000 infective 3rd-stage larvae. One animal in the low molecular weight vaccinated group showed no protection against H. contortus, whereas the 4 other sheep in this group showed a mean reduction of 99·9% in faecal egg counts and of 97·6% in abomasal worm burden compared to the non-vaccinated controls and the adjuvant controls. The ES-vaccinated sheep showed a 32·2% reduction in parasite egg production and a 63·7% reduction in abomasal worm counts. Analysis of the humoral immune responses revealed no significant differences in antibody recognition of putative protective antigens between the protected and non-protected vaccinated animals. However, a marked lower lymphocyte proliferation response was found in non-protected sheep.
