NASA’s all-sky survey mission, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), is specifically engineered to detect exoplanets that transit bright stars. Thus far, TESS has successfully identified approximately 400 transiting exoplanets, in addition to roughly 6 000 candidate exoplanets pending confirmation. In this study, we present the results of our ongoing project, the Validation of Transiting Exoplanets using Statistical Tools (VaTEST). Our dedicated effort is focused on the confirmation and characterisation of new exoplanets through the application of statistical validation tools. Through a combination of ground-based telescope data, high-resolution imaging, and the utilisation of the statistical validation tool known as TRICERATOPS, we have successfully discovered eight potential super-Earths. These planets bear the designations: TOI-238b (1.61$^{+0.09} _{-0.10}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-771b (1.42$^{+0.11} _{-0.09}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-871b (1.66$^{+0.11} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1467b (1.83$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1739b (1.69$^{+0.10} _{-0.08}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-2068b (1.82$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-4559b (1.42$^{+0.13} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), and TOI-5799b (1.62$^{+0.19} _{-0.13}$ R$_\oplus$). Among all these planets, six of them fall within the region known as ‘keystone planets’, which makes them particularly interesting for study. Based on the location of TOI-771b and TOI-4559b below the radius valley we characterised them as likely super-Earths, though radial velocity mass measurements for these planets will provide more details about their characterisation. It is noteworthy that planets within the size range investigated herein are absent from our own solar system, making their study crucial for gaining insights into the evolutionary stages between Earth and Neptune.

During an electron microscope study of the weathering of granite from southern New South Wales, Australia, an assemblage of minerals including florencite and rhabdophane was discovered replacing apatite. Light rare earth elements released from allanite early in weathering apparently combined with P released by leaching of primary apatite to form secondary phases exhibiting a range of morphologies and compositions. Chondrite normalized fractionation patterns La > Nd > Sm > Ce; La > Ce > Nd ≥ Sm and La = Sm = Nd > Ce were identified. The rare earth elements were present in very small crystals and aggregates of secondary minerals (< 10 μm) and coexisted with clays and secondary Fe-Ti oxides. The weathered granite was enriched about 6 to 10 times in all rare earth elements except Ce relative to fresh granite if the abundances were corrected for apparent enrichment due to reduction in density. The rare earth elements were probably derived from higher in the weathering profile, possibly by destruction of florencite and rhabdophane in very intensively weathered rock. Ce remained relatively immobile during weathering, probably due to its oxidation to Ce4+.

Transmission electron microscopy suggests that biotite transforms to vermiculite primarily by direct structural modification, involving the replacement of K+ by hydrated interlayer cations, and only minor reorganization of the 2:1 layer. A second relatively uncommon mechanism appears to involve redistribution of components from two biotite sheets to form a single vermiculite layer. Distortion of the surrounding structure initially inhibits growth of vermiculite in the surrounding biotite, and promotes the propagation of vermiculite layers in opposite directions. This phenomenon may contribute to the development of relatively regular, widely spaced interstratifications of biotite and vermiculite. Additional components and space are provided by the dissolution of biotite where access of solutions is greater.

During weathering, biotite and vermiculite become increasingly replaced by kaolinite, which crystallizes epitactically onto existing layers, and goethite, which develops from a poorly crystalline iron oxyhydroxide precursor to form oriented laths. In areas parts of strongly weathered samples kaolinite and goethite appear to develop in proportions consistent with a reaction that conserves both Al and Fe.

Analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy of weathered plagioclase and K-feldspar provided microtextural and chemical data that suggest a sequential formation of weathering products. An alteration layer < 1 µm thick on feldspar surfaces had short-range order and was termed protocrystalline. Relative to the parent feldspars the protocrystalline layer was depleted in Ca, Na, K, and Si and significantly enriched in Fe. On plagioclase, the protocrystalline material was replaced by Ca-Fe-K-smectite, another protocrystalline material, and spherical halloysite. Abundant tubular halloysite on the corroded surface apparently formed by reprecipitation of components released by plagioclase dissolution. The K-feldspar was markedly more resistant to weathering than the plagioclase.

Recrystallization of the patchily developed protocrystalline rind produced Fe-bearing, aluminous smecrite, which was ultimately replaced by spherical halloysite and laths of kaolinite. Muscovite laths within plagioclase crystals were converted initially to illite by loss of K, then to randomly interstratified illite/smectite, and then to smectite that contained Mg, little K and Fe, and was more aluminous and contained less Ca than the smectite that originally replaced the plagioclase. Smectite was replaced epitactically by kaolinite. Kaolinite was the stable weathering product of the feldspars and muscovite in the profiles. It probably formed in equilibrium with a solution whose composition was no longer controlled by the microenvironment within the feldspar, but approached that of meteoric water.

Basal channels, which are troughs carved into the undersides of ice shelves by buoyant plumes of water, are modulators of ice-shelf basal melt and structural stability. In this study, we track the evolution of 12 large basal channels beneath ice shelves of the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas region in West Antarctica using the Landsat record since its start in the 1970s through 2020. We observe examples of channel growth, interactions with ice-shelf features, and systematic changes in sinuosity that give insight into the life cycles of basal channels. We use the last two decades of the record, combined with contemporary ice-flow velocity datasets, to separate channel-path evolution into components related to advection by ice flow and those controlled by other forcings, such as ocean melt or surface accumulation. Our results show that ice-flow-independent lateral channel migration is overwhelmingly to the left when viewed down-flow, suggesting that it is dominated by Coriolis-influenced ocean melt. By applying a model of channel-path evolution dominantly controlled by ice flow and ocean melt, we show that the majority of channels surveyed exhibit non-steady behavior that serves as a novel proxy for increased ocean forcing in West Antarctica starting at least in the early 1970s.

In situ elemental imaging of planetary surface regolith at a spatial resolution of 100s to 1000s of microns can provide evidence of the provenance of rocks or sediments and their habitability, and can identify post-depositional diagenetic alteration affecting preservation. We use high-resolution elemental maps and XRF spectra from MapX, a flight prototype in situ X-ray imaging instrument, to demonstrate this technology in rock types relevant to astrobiology. Examples are given for various petrologies and depositional/diagenetic environments, including ultramafic/mafic rocks, serpentinites, hydrothermal carbonates, evaporites, stromatolitic cherts and diagenetic concretions.

The weathering of chlorite in hydrothermally-altered basalt was studied with XRD, TEM and electron microprobe to determine the type and orientation of secondary minerals. Optical examination indicated chlorite assemblages to have altered in two distinct microsites: one microsite near micro-fissures traversing the regolith units, and the other away from the continuous passages. In this paper, weathering mechanisms and products of chlorite present in microsites distant from the micro-fissures are reported. In all the regolith units the original chlorite grain remained intact and was pseudomorphed by secondary products. In the saprock, chlorite altered to corrensite with possible random interstratifications of chlorite and corrensite and corrensite and vermiculite. In the saprolite, corrensite altered to vermiculite. Parallelism of two axes of the products with the host indicated topotactic alteration. In the fine saprolite, vermiculite was found to alter to kaolinite via a randomly interstratified kaolinite-vermiculite stage with a high proportion of kaolinite. Goethite crystallized in between packets of kaolinite, vermiculite and kaolinite-vermiculite. Though the disruption of the crystal structure of vermiculite is necessary in its alteration to kaolinite, the reaction was such as to maintain parallelism of the c axis. The alteration of chlorite to vermiculite was characterized by the loss of Mg and Fe and minor Al, all ions considered to be lost from the brucite-like sheet of chlorite. The Fe released during the alteration of vermiculite to kaolinite is likely to have migrated to micropores to form goethite. The presence of interstratifications of the end-members of layer silicates involved in the reaction sequence suggests that interstratifications are common during layer silicate weathering in environments where space is limited and consequently solution and ionic transport passages are restrictive.

The purpose of this report is to describe the appropriate use of indices relating to crystallinity, such as the ‘crystallinity index’, the ‘Hinckley index’, the ‘Kübler index’, and the ‘Árkai index’. A ‘crystalline’ solid is defined as a solid consisting of atoms, ions or molecules packed together in a periodic arrangement. A ‘crystallinity index’ is purported to be a measure of crystallinity, although there is uncertainty about what this means (see below). This report discusses briefly the nature of order, disorder and crystallinity in phyllosilicates and discusses why the use of a ‘crystallinity index’ should be avoided. If possible, it is suggested that indices be referred to using the name of the author who originally described the parameter, e.g. ‘Hinckley index’ or ‘Kübler index’, or in honor of a researcher who investigated the importance of the parameter extensively, e.g. ‘Árkai index’.

The extremely toxic protein, ricin, is derived from castor beans and is a potential terrorist weapon. Adsorption to clays might minimize the environmental persistence and toxic effects of this toxin. Ricin adsorption to clay minerals was measured using batch adsorption isotherms. Enzyme-linked immunoassay methods were used to quantify aqueous ricin concentrations. Montmorillonite, sepiolite and palygorskite effectively adsorbed ricin from aqueous solutions and yielded mostly Langmuir-type isotherms. The monolayer adsorption capacity from a Langmuir equation fit at pH 7 was 444 g ricin/kg for montmorillonite (SWy-2), but was only 5.6 g ricin/kg for kaolinite (KGa-1b). Monolayer capacities for sepiolite (SepSp-1) and palygorskite (PFl-1) at pH 7 were 59.2 and 58.1 g ricin/kg. The high-charge montmorillonite (SAz-1) effectively adsorbed ricin at pH 7, but yielded a linear isotherm with K = 5530 L/kg. At pH 5, both montmorillonites (SWy-2 and SAz-1) yielded Langmuir-type isotherms with monolayer capacities of 694 and 641 g ricin/kg. Clay samples with higher cation exchange capacities generally adsorbed more ricin, but adsorption also followed specific surface area. X-ray diffraction of <2 μm SWy-2 treated with 470 g ricin/kg indicated expansion up to 34.6 Å at buffered pHs of 4 and 7, but not at pH 10. Furthermore, ricin adsorption was greatest at pH 4 and 7, but minimal at pH 10. Treatment with 1.41 kg of purified ricin/kg clay at pH 5 yielded a 35.3 Å peak and adsorption of ~1.2 kg ricin/kg. Similar treatment with lower-purity ricin yielded less expansion and lower adsorption. The 35.3 Å peak interpreted either as a d002 or d001 reflection indicates a 70.6 Å or a 35.3 Å ricin/SWy-2 complex. This implies that adsorption and air drying have compressed interlayer ricin molecules by 18 to 65%. Effective ricin adsorption by montmorillonite suggests that it could be used to minimize the toxic effects of dispersed ricin.

Weathering of chlorite adjacent to macro- and micro-passages (fissures) in regolith units has been studied to determine the alteration mechanisms and products and compare them to those that prevail at a distance from the open passages. The micro-fissures in the saprolith units evolve as a function of weathering with an increase in micro-fissure density and their infilling with ferriargillans corresponding to an increase in weathering intensity. In the saprock and saprolite units, goethite-rich bands with surrounding reddish haloes invade the chlorite adjoining the micro-fissures. In the reddish haloes surrounding the goethite bands and fissures, the phyllosilicates alter to an intimate mixture of goethite, kaolinite, feroxyhyte and halloysite with the possible nanoscale presence of other fine-grained iron aluminosilicates such as hisingerite and smectite. In the fine saprolite, the weathering products after original chlorite adjoining the micro-fissures bearing ferriargillans, alter directly to ferriargillan products — kaolinite and goethite. The lack of orientation of the products with the parent phyllosilicates indicates the operation of a dissolution-precipitat ion mechanism which is in contrast to the topotactic alteration mechanism functioning at a distance within the phyllosilicate grain assemblage. The differences in alteration mechanisms and products of chlorite weathering in different microsites suggest the rate of weathering of chlorite can differ in microsites within individual regolith units. The presence of fine-grained metastable products in the form of feroxyhyte and halloysite adjoining the fissures suggests an Ostwald Step Rule sequence during alteration of phyllosilicates with rapid oxidation of Fe and the presence of Si in the microsite considered the main factor favoring fine-grained metastable products.

Partially molten rock is a densely packed, melt-saturated, granular medium, but it has seldom been considered in these terms. In this paper we extend the continuum theory of partially molten rock to incorporate the physics of granular media. Our formulation includes dilatancy in a viscous constitutive law and introduces a non-local fluidity. We analyse the resulting poro-viscous–granular theory in terms of two modes of liquid–solid segregation that are observed in published torsion experiments: localisation of liquid into high-porosity sheets and radially inward liquid flow. We show that the newly incorporated granular physics brings the theory into agreement with experiments. We discuss these results in the context of grain-scale physics across the nominal jamming fraction at the high homologous temperatures relevant in geological systems.

Sedimentary rocks exposed at Dob’s Linn, Scotland, have significantly influenced our understanding of how life evolved over the Ordovician to Early Silurian. The current interpreted chronostratigraphic boundary between the Ordovician and Silurian periods is a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP), calibrated to 443.8 ± 1.5 Ma (Hirnatian–Rhuddanian age), based on biostratigraphic markers, radioisotopic dates and statistical modelling. However, challenges arise due to tectonic disturbances, complex correlation issues and the lack of systematic dating in Ordovician–Silurian stratigraphic sections. Here, hundreds of zircon grains from three metabentonite ash horizons were dated using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). A subset of the grains were re-analyzed using Chemical Abrasion Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS). We present a high-precision CA-ID-TIMS 238U-206Pb weighted mean date of 440.44 ± 0.55/0.56/0.72 Ma (±analytical/with tracer/with U-decay constant) for the Coronagraptus cyphus biozone. However, the study reports younger, and in certain cases, older LA-ICP-MS zircon dates within the Coronagraptus cyphus, Akidograptus ascensus and Dicellograptus anceps zones, suspected as being influenced by Pb loss and LA-ICP-MS matrix mismatch. The study reports concerns about the suitability of Dob’s Linn as a GSSP section and examines various LA-ICP-MS maximum depositional age (MDA) approaches, suggesting the use of the TuffZirc date and the youngest mode weighted mean (YMWM) as suitable MDA calculations consistent with CA-ID-TIMS results.

In both population-based and clinical cohorts, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have reported associations between a range of non-specific markers of immune activation (e.g., pro-inflammatory cytokines) or chronic inflammation (e.g., C-reactive protein [CRP]) and depressive and other mood disorders (Dowlati et al. 2010; Hickie et al. 2018; Khandaker et al. 2017; Orsolini et al. 2022; Valkanova et al. 2013). The clinico-pathological significance, and directional relationships, of these associations tended to be downplayed as the systemic levels of these inflammatory markers were not in the ranges typical of active infective, inflammatory or significant autoimmune diseases.
