Stellar convection is customarily described by the mixing-length theory, which makes use of the mixing-length scale to express the convective flux, velocity, and temperature gradients of the convective elements and stellar medium. The mixing-length scale is taken to be proportional to the local pressure scale height, and the proportionality factor (the mixing-length parameter) must be determined by comparing the stellar models to some calibrator, usually the Sun. No strong arguments exist to suggest that the mixing-length parameter is the same in all stars and all evolutionary phases. Because of this, all stellar models in the literature are hampered by this basic uncertainty.

In a recent paper (Pasetto et al. 2014) we presented a new theory that does not require the mixing length parameter. Our self-consistent analytical formulation of stellar convection determines all the properties of stellar convection as a function of the physical behaviour of the convective elements themselves and the surrounding medium. The new theory of stellar convection is formulated starting from a conventional solution of the Navier-Stokes/Euler equations, i.e. the Bernoulli equation for a perfect fluid, but expressed in a non-inertial reference frame co-moving with the convective elements. In our formalism, the motion of stellar convective cells inside convective-unstable layers is fully determined by a new system of equations for convection in a non-local and time-dependent formalism.

We obtained an analytical, non-local, time-dependent solution for the convective energy transport that does not depend on any free parameter. The predictions of the new theory are compared with those from the standard mixing-length paradigm with positive results for atmosphere models of the Sun and all the stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.

We investigate the competitive role of the different dissipative phenomena acting on the onset of star formation of gravitationally bound systems in an external environment. Ram pressure, Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities, and tidal forces are accounted for separately in an analytical framework and compared in their role in influencing the star forming regions. We present an analytical criterion to elucidate the dependence of star formation in a spherical stellar system on its surrounding environment. We consider the different signatures of these phenomena in synthetically realized colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the orbiting system thus investigating the detectability limits of these different effects for future observational projects and their relevance. The developed theoretical framework has direct applications to the cases of massive star clusters, dwarf galaxies in galaxy clusters and dwarf galaxies orbiting our Milky Way system, as well as any primordial gas-rich cluster of stars orbiting within its host galaxy.

A large amount (5 × 1010 M⊙) of hot gas is thought to exist in an extended (≈ 200 kpc) hot diffuse halo around the Milky Way. Westerlund 2 (Wd2) is one of the most massive young star clusters known in the Milky Way. The close proximity (4.16 kpc) to the Sun, and the young age (2.0 Myr) allow us to study star formation in detail at a high spatial resolution. We present results from our recent deep multi-band survey in the optical and near-infrared obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. We demonstrated that, as expected, the region is affected by significant differential reddening with a median value of E(B − V)g = 1.87 mag. The distance was inferred from the dereddened color-magnitude diagrams using Padova isochrones. Analyzing the spatial distribution of stars we found that Wd2 consists of two sub-clumps, namely the main cluster of Westerlund 2 and a less well populated clump located to the North. We estimated the same age of 0.1–2.0 Myr for both sub-clumps, thus we conclude that they are likely coeval.

Only twelve of the > 76 Local Group galaxies contain globular clusters, showing a broad range of specific frequencies. Here we summarize the properties of these globular cluster systems. Many host galaxies contain very old globulars, but in some globular cluster formation may have been delayed. An age range of several Gyr is common. Except for the inner regions of the spirals, old globular clusters tend to be metal-poor. Increasingly, light element variations and hints of multiple stellar populations are being found also in extragalactic globulars. There is ample evidence for globular cluster accretion from dwarfs onto massive galaxies, but its magnitude has yet to be quantified. Caution is needed to avoid overinterpreting indirect evidence.

We use photometry in the F220W, F250W, F330W, F435W filters from the High Resolution Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys and photometry in the F555W, F675W, and F814W filters from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to derive individual stellar reddenings and extinctions for member stars in the HD 97950 cluster in the giant H ii region NGC 3603. Within the standard deviation associated with E(λ−F555W)/E(F435W−F555W) in each filter, the cluster extinction curve at ultraviolet wavelengths tends to be greyer than the average Galactic extinction laws from Cardelli et al. (1989) and Fitzpatrick et al. (1999). It is closer to the extinction law derived by Calzetti et al. (2000) for starburst galaxies, where the 0.2175 μm bump is absent.

We use observations of OGLE-III ab-type RRLyrae stars towards the Galactic centre (Soszyński et al. 2011, AcA 6,1) to study the metallicity and 3D spatial distribution of the old and metal-poor component of the Galactic bulge. Metallicities and distances to the RRLyrae stars are derived photometrically from Fourier-component analyses of their light curves, allowing the determination of distances accurate to ~7% from 0 to 40 kpc. The distance distribution of the RRLyrae stars peaks at 8.8 kpc, with the data indicating the presence of a bar-like structure inclined at ~30° to the line of sight. The dataset also exhibits a secondary concentration of stars beyond the Galactic centre at ~27 kpc. This is consistent with the distance to the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy, and can be attributed to the serendipitous alignment of the Sgr stream with the bulge. This dataset allows the Sgr stream to be traced in this part of the sky for the first time. The underlying metallicity distributions are determined to have mean ± intrinsic width of [Fe/H]bulge = −1.24±0.23 dex and [Fe/H]Sgr = −1.53±0.14 dex.

Galaxies cover a wide range of masses and star formation histories. In this review, I summarize some of the evolutionary key features of common galaxy types. At the high-mass end, very rapid, efficient early star formation is observed, accompanied by strong enrichment and later quiescence, well-described by downsizing scenarios. In the intermediate-mass regime, early-type galaxies may still show activity in low-mass environments or when being rejuvenated by wet mergers. In late-type galaxies, we find continuous, though variable star formation over a Hubble time. In the dwarf regime, a wide range of properties from bursty activity to quiescence is observed. Generally, stochasticity dominates here, and star formation rates and efficiencies tend to be low. Morphological types and their star formation properties correlate with environment.

NGC 3603 is one of the most massive, compact young star clusters in the Milky Way. The cluster has an age of only about 1 Myr and is embedded in a giant molecular cloud with ongoing star formation. We have analyzed deep imaging data obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We have obtained two epochs separated by 10 years, from which we derived proper motions which we used to determine cluster membership. After the removal of field stars, the resulting color–magnitude diagram shows a main sequence in addition to another clear sequence of pre-main-sequence stars. The cluster shows pronounced mass segregation and appears to have a very short crossing timescale. Our photometric, astrometric and kinematic data help us to evaluate the dissolution timescale of NGC 3603 and whether the mass segregation is likely to be primordial or evolutionary.

The M81 group is a highly interacting group consisting of a few large galaxies and about 40 dwarfs of both early- and late-type, thus making it an important nearby laboratory to study environmental effects and the role of interactions in the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. We are studying the resolved stellar populations of the early-type dwarf galaxies in this group with available HST/ACS data. We will show results on the metallicity distribution functions and on the potential presence of population gradients for these dwarf galaxies.

Our knowledge about the chemical evolution of the more luminous dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies is constantly growing. However, little is known about the enrichment of the ultrafaint systems recently discovered in large numbers in large Sky Surveys. Low-resolution spectroscopy and photometric data indicate that these galaxies are predominantly metal-poor. On the other hand, the most recent high-resolution abundance analyses indicate that some of these galaxies experienced highly inhomogenous chemical enrichment, where star formation proceeds locally on the smallest scales. Furthermore, these galaxy-contenders appear to contain very metal-poor stars with [Fe/H]< −3 dex and could be the sites of the first stars. Here, we consider the presently available chemical abundance information of the (ultra-) faint Milky Way satellite dSphs. In this context, some of the most peculiar element and inhomogeneous enrichment patterns will be discussed and related to the question of to what extent the faintest dSph candidates and outer halo globular clusters could have contributed to the metal-poor Galactic halo.

Our knowledge on the age structure, the chemical evolution, and the kinematics of the Galactic disk has grown substantially during the last years. Recent results on the properties of the stellar populations in the Galactic disk are summarized, and ongoing and future surveys and facilities are discussed. A short overview of recent mass estimates for the Milky Way is presented, and a brief summary of some of the key properties of the Galactic companions is given. The coming decade promises major breakthroughs in understanding our Milky Way, its disk, and the role of its satellites.

The faintest and darkest galaxies that we know of today are the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. They appear to be plausible counterparts of cosmologically predicted small subhalos though their numbers do not (yet?) suffice to resolve the substructure crisis. Their mass-to-light ratios may go up to 1000 for the faintest objects, and their total masses are of the order of a few 106 to 107 M⊙. Though most dSphs are dominated by old populations, they all show extended and presumably slow star formation histories with considerable enrichment. While environment has certainly affected their evolution, as evidenced by the morphology-gas-distance relations, intrinsic properties such as their (initial) baryon content may also have played a major role. The complexity and diversity of their star formation histories is surprising, and there are no obvious evolutionary connections to dwarf irregulars.

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is the only dwarf galaxy in the Local Group that is known to have formed and preserved populous star clusters continuously over the past 12 Gyr. Due to its proximity (≈ 60 kpc), stars can be resolved well below the oldest main sequence turnoff points. This facilitates accurate age and metallicity determinations without suffering from the age-metallicity degeneracy. Therefore, the SMC star clusters provide a unique closely spaced set of single-age, single-metallicity tracers to derive a well-sampled age-metallicity relation required for the understanding of the star formation history of this satellite galaxy. Up to date spectroscopically based metallicity estimates exist only for the small number of 7 clusters (Da Costa & Hatzidimitriou 1998). Our project now more than doubles the available data set by the observation of 10 additional clusters.

M32 and other compact dwarf galaxies present interesting evolutionary puzzles. Why are most dwarf galaxies low density systems while a very few, like M32, have the highest stellar densities of any galaxies? We suggest that gas capture should be added to the tidal stirring mix as a way to make high density M32-type dwarfs starting with relatively ordinary satellite galaxies. This paper presents some of the basic features and issue associated with gas capture models.

The Local Group offers an excellent laboratory for near-field cosmology by permitting us to use the resolved stellar content of its constituent galaxies as probes of galaxy formation and evolution, which in turn is an important means for testing cosmological models of hierarchical structure formation. In this review, we discuss the the least massive, yet most numerous type of galaxy in the Local Group, the dwarf spheroidal galaxies, and compare their properties to cosmological predictions. In particular, we point out problems found with a simple building block scenario and with effects expected from reionization. We show that the star formation histories of dSphs are inconsistent with the predicted cessation of star formation after reionization; instead, extended star formation episodes are observed. The Galactic dSphs contain in part prominent intermediate-age populations, whereas the Galactic halo does not. Conversely, the M31 dSphs are almost entirely old, while the M31 halo contains a substantial intermediate-age population. These differences in the population structure as well as the differences in the modes of star formation inferred from [α/Fe] ratios make dSphs unlikely major contributors to the build-up of the Galactic and M31 halo unless most of the accretion occurred at early epochs. On the other hand, there is clear evidence for ongoing harassment and accretion of a number of dSphs.

A colour analysis of a carefully selected sample of over 200 Virgo cluster dEs and 8 giant ellipticals (Es) in the SDSS yields the following results: a) the nucleated dEs (dENs) follow a tight colour-magnitude relation (CMR) which does not broaden significantly at fainter ($M_r \ge -15$) magnitudes, b) the CMR of dENs smoothly transitions to the CMR of Es, but the latter changes its slope at about $M_r \approx -20$, c) the brighter dENs are consistent with ages of $t \ge 5\rm{Gyr}$ and a decrease of metallicity towards fainter magnitudes, but a possible additional luminosity-age relation is not ruled out, d) it is crucial to treat dS0s separately from dEs since their different colour properties would otherwise bias the comparison of nucleated and non-nucleated dEs (dEnoNs), e) the dEnoNs show a weak trend towards bluer colours than dENs.

The observational evidence for kinematic substructure in Local Group dSphs is reviewed. The properties of these substructures are consistent with their being disrupted star clusters. The persistence of cold substructure argues strongly against the presence of dark matter cusps in the haloes of dSphs. A formation scenario for dSphs is described involving the merger of star clusters in the potential well of a low-mass dark matter halo.

Using a sample of over 100 nucleated Virgo cluster dEs from the SDSS we show that interchanging nucleus and galaxy colours does not alter the colour-magnitude relation. No significant difference is found between nuclei and their parent galaxies in a multicolour comparison except for a weak tendency that some nuclei are slightly redder than their hosts.
