Samples of real irradiated (i-)graphite from bushings of RBMK reactor after several types of decontamination treatments were put in contact with aqueous solutions modelling underground water of Nizhnekansky massif (Russia) equilibrated with bentonite for periods up to 1.5 years. Leach rates of radionuclides and evolution of graphite surface morphology and oxidation state were monitored using nuclear spectroscopy, SEM and XPS. After the experiment, less than one third of surface carbons remains unoxidised. Extensive precipitation of secondary phases (alumosilicates, carbonates) was observed on some samples and is possibly correlated with surface oxidation extent. The leach rates of dose-forming 14C and 36Cl are comparable with the leach rates of radionuclides in glassy waste forms. According to the current study i-graphite could be regarded as a waste form, which is suitable for near-surface disposal.

Understanding the long-term ecological dynamics of boreal forests is essential for assessment of the possible responses and feedbacks of forest ecosystems to climate change. New data on past forest dynamics and peatland development were obtained from a peat sequence in the southern Valdai Hills (European Russia) based on pollen, plant macrofossil, micro-charcoal, peat humification, and testate amoeba analyses. The results demonstrate a dominance of broadleaved forests in the study area from 7000–4000 cal yr BP. Picea was initially a minor component of this forest but increased in cover rapidly with climatic cooling beginning at 4000 cal yr BP, becoming the dominant species. Broadleaved species persisted until 900 cal yr BP, with evidence for intensified felling and forest management over recent centuries. Over the last four hundred years there is evidence for widespread paludification and the establishment of Picea-Sphagnum forests. These data demonstrate how modern wet woodlands have been shaped by a combination of climatic and anthropogenic factors over several millennia. The results also demonstrate the value of a multiproxy approach in understanding long-term forest ecology.

Holocene climatic variability and human impact on vegetation are reconstructed from a region in central European Russia, which lies at an important ecotone between broadleaf forest and steppe. For the first time in this region we adopt a multi-proxy approach that combines analysis of local mire conditions from plant macrofossil and testate amoeba analyses with pollen-based quantitative climate reconstruction. The proxies indicate a long-term warming trend from 9700 to 7500 cal yr BP, interrupted by a series of short-term cold events. From 7500 to 5000 cal yr BP the results imply a relatively stable climate, warmer and drier than present, spanning the Holocene Thermal Maximum. Since 5000 cal yr BP the data suggest a change to cooler climate, but with centennial-scale variability. This shift at around 5000 cal yr BP is supported by extensive evidence from other sites. In the early Holocene, the region was occupied mainly by pine and birch forests. Broad-leafed forests of oak, lime and elm expanded after 7800 cal yr BP and remained dominant until the last few centuries. During the historical period, vegetation changes have been driven mainly by human activities.

The migration behavior of the long-lived actinides was studied under the conditions of the deep disposal of the acidic liquid nuclear waste (LNW). Composition of LNW varies significantly including acidic technological wastes (pH ∼2.4), which consist of sodium nitrate, acetic acid, corrosion products (Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni, Al), fission products and actinides. Corrosion products tend to precipitate under the LNW disposal conditions that favor forming of the phases with high sorption capacity towards actinides. Sands of reservoir bed have their own initial sorbent surfaces besides new secondary phases that have formed as a result of interaction with acidic LNW. The nearest to the injection well conditions are gradually changing from pH ∼2.4 till neutral values due to the dilution by groundwater with formation of new precipitated phases of corrosion products. The solid phases characterization is a necessary step on the path of knowledge of migration behavior of actinides. The secondary phases of both corrosion products and sands of reservoir bed under LNW disposal conditions were characterized using XRD, SEM and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The recent results of the analyses of the behavior of actinides (Pu. U, Np, Am) under the conditions of the injection of the acid LNW are presented in the paper.

The galvanomagnetic effects in the new diluted magnetic semiconductors Pb1−xSnxTe:Yb were studied to determine the parameters of the electronic structure and to elucidate its influence on the magnetic properties. It was found that the temperature dependencies of the resistivity ρ and the Hall coefficient RH have a “metallic” character, however the RH changes in anomalous manner: its value increases more than by order of magnitude and then passes through maximum with increasing the temperature. Upon an increase of the ytterbium concentration the hole concentration decreases by more than order of magnitude. The results were explained assuming a formation of deep ytterbium-induced defect level in the valence band of the alloys, which moves up to its top with increasing the ytterbium concentration and pins the Fermi level within the valence band. The energy position of the Fermi level was calculated in the frame of two-band dispersion law and used to determine the position of Yb level in the alloys. The diagram of the charge carrier energy spectrum under varying the alloy composition was built.
