Background: CTS and PPR are common EEG findings that are classically associated with CECTS and GGE respectively. PPD and sleep spindles are physiologic phenomenon that occur in respond to intermittent photic stimulation and sleep respectively. Methods: We reviewed EEG studies with CTS, PPR, asymmetric PPD, or asymmetric sleep spindles. For CTS, we determined sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV for a diagnosis of CECTS. For PPR, we determined the same diagnostic outcome measures for a diagnosis of GGE or JME. For each of asymmetric PPD and asymmetric sleep spindles, we determined the same diagnostic outcome measures for the presence of a structural abnormality on brain MRI. Results: CTS had 83% specificity and 75% PPV in children with normal neurological examination. PPR had high specificity of 92% and NPV 92% for GGE; for JME, PPR also had high sensitivity (92%). Asymmetric PPD had low sensitivity for structural brain abnormalities (17%), with specificity 80%. In contrast, asymmetric sleep spindles had higher sensitivity and specificity, 44% and 97%, respectively. Conclusions: CTS are seen with CECTS and other conditions. PPR is highly indicative of a GGE, though may be seen other conditions. Relative attenuation of sleep spindles is a more reliable indicator of structural brain malformation than asymmetric PPD.

Background: Focal cortical dysplasias (FCDs) are congenital structural abnormalities of the brain, and represent the most common cause of medication-resistant focal epilepsy in children and adults. Recent studies have shown that somatic mutations (i.e. mutations arising in the embryo) in mTOR pathway genes underlie some FCD cases. Specific therapies targeting the mTOR pathway are available. However, testing for somatic mTOR pathway mutations in FCD tissue is not performed on a clinical basis, and the contribution of such mutations to the pathogenesis of FCD remains unknown. Aim: To investigate the feasibility of screening for somatic mutations in resected FCD tissue and determine the proportion and spatial distribution of FCDs which are due to low-level somatic mTOR pathway mutations. Methods: We performed ultra-deep sequencing of 13 mTOR pathway genes using a custom HaloPlexHS target enrichment kit (Agilent Technologies) in 16 resected histologically-confirmed FCD specimens. Results: We identified causal variants in 62.5% (10/16) of patients at an alternate allele frequency of 0.75–33.7%. The spatial mutation frequency correlated with the FCD lesion’s size and severity. Conclusions: Screening FCD tissue using a custom panel results in a high yield, and should be considered clinically given the important potential implications regarding surgical resection, medical management and genetic counselling.

Background: Little knowledge exists on the availability of academic and community paediatric neurology positions. This knowledge is crucial for making workforce decisions. Our study aimed to: 1) obtain information regarding the availability of positions for paediatric neurologists in academic centres; 2) survey paediatric neurology trainees regarding their perceptions of employment issues and career plans; 3) survey practicing community paediatric neurologists 4) convene a group of paediatric neurologists to develop consensus regarding how to address these workforce issues. Methods: Surveys addressing workforce issues regarding paediatric neurology in Canada were sent to: 1) all paediatric neurology program directors in Canada (n=9) who then solicited information from division heads and from paediatric neurologists in surrounding areas; 2) paediatric neurology trainees in Canada (n=57) and; 3) community paediatric neurologists (n=27). A meeting was held with relevant stakeholders to develop a consensus on how to approach employment issues. Results: The response rate was 100% from program directors, 57.9% from residents and 44% from community paediatric neurologists. We found that the number of projected positions in academic paediatric neurology is fewer than the number of paediatric neurologists that are being trained over the next five to ten years, despite a clinical need for paediatric neurologists. Paediatric neurology residents are concerned about job availability and desire more career counselling. Conclusions: There is a current and projected clinical demand for paediatric neurologists despite a lack of academic positions. Training programs should focus on community neurology as a viable career option.

To facilitate the completion of their life-cycle, many helminth parasites have evolved the ability to manipulate the behaviour of their intermediate host in order to make it more likely to be eaten by the parasite's definitive host. Here, we determined whether the cestode Eubothrium salvelini modifies the behaviour of its intermediate host, the copepod Cyclops vernalis, and makes it more susceptible to predation by brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, the parasite's final host. Following the experimental infection of copepods, the spontaneous activity of infected and control subjects was quantified weekly. In addition, we regularly quantified predation by individual brook trout fry on known numbers of infected and control copepods. At approximately the time when the cestode larvae became infective to fish (2–3 weeks following infection), the infected copepods started to swim more actively than uninfected controls. Also at that time, infected individuals became more likely to be captured by fish than uninfected ones. Copepod size and intensity of infection had no significant effect on their behaviour or their risk of being eaten by fish. Thus cestode- induced changes in copepod swimming activity can lead to infected copepods becoming highly vulnerable to fish predators, and may have resulted from selection on the parasite to increase its transmission success

The short-lived infective copepodid stages of the copepod Salmincola edwardsii, ectoparasitic on brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, are under strong selective pressure to evolve efficient host-finding mechanisms. In laboratory experiments, we quantified the effects of visual and mechanical stimulation on the activity of the copepodids. We found that shadows passing above the copepodids and shock waves passing through the water generated marked increases in the rate and length of upward swimming bursts, which resulted in more time spent suspended in the water column and greater distances travelled. However, we found no strong evidence for a relationship between the magnitude of the copepodids' response and the intensity of stimulation. Although these responses are not host-specific, they allow the parasites to conserve their limited energy stores by increasing their host-finding activity only when potential hosts are nearby.

The electrical supply of portable electronic devices is a crucial problem, which may be solved by harvesting a part of the mechanical energy dissipated in our environment. For the last ten years, many prototype piezoelectric generators have been proposed in research literature, offering different technological choices, but always working according to the same schematics: three different conversion stages. The first one, named mechanical application device (MAD), transforms the initial mechanical stress into a higher level or higher frequency stress. This stress is applied to the second stage, the piezoelectric device (PD). The last stage, an electronic circuit named harvesting system (HS), is essential to maximise the electrical energy delivered to the targeted electronic device. In this paper, we present an experimental test bench that can replace any association of MAD and PD. Then we describe our HS, and demonstrate its performances for our application, where the applied mechanical stress is exponential and varies with a low frequency. Thanks to this HS, the conversion from mechanical energy to electrical energy is improved, and this phenomenon can be explained by simulation, using an equivalent circuit. At last, some experimental results are commented, leading to the perspectives of this research project.

In theory there should be a strong coupling between host and parasite population sizes. Here, we investigated population size and structure in 3 species of acanthocephalans, Corynosoma semerme, C. strumosum and C. magdaleni, in ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from the Bothnian Bay over a period of more than 20 years. During this period, seal numbers first decreased markedly and then increased steadily; at the same time, a paratenic fish host particularly important for C. strumosum has gradually disappeared from the bay due to decreasing salinity. We found no evidence that the mean abundance of any of the 3 acanthocephalan species changed significantly over time, nor was there any relationship between parasite abundance at any point in time and seal numbers in the corresponding year. Based on the proportion of sexually mature female worms per infrapopulation, and on relationships between the sex ratio of worms and infrapopulation size, both C. magdaleni and C. semerme appear to be doing well, independently of the population size of their seal definitive hosts. In contrast, perhaps because of the loss of its main paratenic host, C. strumosum appears more at risk in the Bothnian Bay. Our results show that in complex natural systems, there are not necessarily simple, direct links between definitive host population size or density, and parasite population dynamics.

The diversity and abundance of parasites vary widely among populations of the same host species. These infection parameters are, to some extent, determined by characteristics of the host population or of its habitat. Recent studies have supported predictions derived from epidemiological models regarding the influence of host population density: parasite abundance and parasite species richness are expected to increase with increasing host population density, at least for directly transmitted parasites. Here, we test this prediction using a natural system in which populations of the crucian carp, Carassius carassius (L.), occur alone, with no other fish species, in a series of 9 isolated ponds in Finland. The ectoparasite communities in these fish populations consist of only 4 species of monogeneans (Dactylogyrus formosus, D. wegeneri, D. intermedius and Gyrodactylus carassii); the total and relative abundance of these 4 species varies among ponds, with one or two of the species missing from certain ponds. Across ponds, only one factor, total fish population size, explained a significant portion of the variance in both the mean number of monogenean species per fish and the mean total abundance of monogenean individual per fish. In contrast, fish population density did not influence either monogenean abundance or species richness, and neither did any of the other variables investigated (mean fish length per pond, number of fish examined per pond, distance to the nearest lake, and several water quality measures). In our system, proximity among fish individuals (i.e. host population density) may not be relevant to the proliferation of monogeneans; instead, the overall availability of host individuals in the host population appeared to be the main constraint limiting parasite population growth.

In free-living animals sexual selection is a central force shaping the spatial distribution of individuals in a population as well as sexual size dimorphism. We studied the influence of sexual selection on spatial distribution, female-to-male body size ratio, and female mating success of acanthocephalans in a natural host population of Saimaa ringed seal (Phoca hispida saimensis) harbouring a single intestinal helminth species, Corynosoma magdaleni. The acanthocephalans were always found along the full length of the small intestine; however, the site selection varied among the individual seals according to the age of the infection. The distribution of male acanthocephalans was not random with respect to females, with larger males tending to aggregate around non-mated females. A higher proportion of C. magdaleni females had copulated in seals with relatively more male worms. Male–male competition for access to females can be intense in C. magdaleni infrapopulation and may select for large males. We found that the larger the infrapopulation size, the smaller the males compared to females. In addition, the greater the female bias in the infrapopulation, the smaller the testes of males. Our study shows that sexual selection may be an important determinant of spatial distribution, male body size and female mating success of C. magdaleni in Saimaa ringed seal.

Structural, electrical and thermal methods are applied to characterize single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) fibers with post-extrusion stretching as the independent variable. HiPco SWNTs are dispersed in water using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and then co-extruded with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/water through a long syringe into a rotating water/PVA coagulation bath. Partial axial alignment is thereby achieved, and further enhanced by applying tension to the flexible green fibers in the coagulation bath. Our findings include: (1) X-ray diffraction shows that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the Bragg peaks decreases from 55 (as-extruded) to less than 30 degrees by 80% elongation. That is, SWNT alignment increases linearly with stretch (up to 80%). (2) In resistivity at room temperature vs. stretch ratio, result shows an initial rapid decrease followed by saturation; essentially all the improvement in electronic transport is obtained once alignment reached 40° FWHM. (3) Annealing in hydrogen at 1000°C is performed to drive out PVA, to improve inter-tube and inter-bundle contacts, and to heal damage on the tube walls. Such annealing is found to increase conductivity by at least 4 orders of magnitude. (4) Below 25 K, resistivity vs. temperature of the annealed fiber is well-represented by Coulomb gap variable range hopping (CG-VRH). It is rationalized that the Coulomb interactions in disordered systems open a gap at the Fermi energy. Above 25 K, the thermal energy is greater than the Coulomb gap, so thermal activation is more probable than correlated electron hops. (5) Finally, a measurable thermal conductivity is observed as stretch alignment increases.

Samples of the New Zealand cockle Austrovenus stutchburyi (Veneridae) collected at two different intertidal levels were found to be heavily infected by the echinostome trematode Curtuteria australis which use the mud flat whelk Cominella glandiformis and shorebirds as first and definitive host, respectively. Parasite loads were on average more than 2-fold higher at the high site than at the low site, whereas the density of Curtuteria australis metacercariae per square metre showed the opposite trend. This pattern appeared unrelated to the abundance of first intermediate hosts and C. australis prevalence within this host that did not differ between sites. At both sites there was a positive relationship between parasite load and cockle condition, a likely by-product of the relationship between condition-based filtration capacity and the rate at which individual cockles encounter the free-swimming trematode larvae. The results suggest that the between-site variation in parasitism is a consequence of the much higher density of cockles at the low site. There, the dense cockle population is able to clear the water column of parasites and consequently individual cockles virtually ‘compete’ for parasite larvae. This will depress mean infection intensity per cockle but elevate mean parasite density per square metre.

We used nestedness analysis to seek non-random patterns in the structure of component communities of metazoan parasites collected from 31 sympatric fish species from the northeastern Bothnian Bay, the most oligohaline area of the Baltic Sea. Only 8 marine parasite species were found among the 63 species recorded, although some marine fish species reproduce in the bay and others occasionally visit the area. Marine parasite species can utilize both freshwater and marine fish species as intermediate or final hosts, and marine fish can harbour freshwater parasite species. This exchange of parasite species between marine and freshwater fish has probably resulted from ecological factors acting over short time scales rather than from evolutionary processes acting over longer time; the key factor probably being the immediate presence of suitable intermediate and definitive hosts. Marine fish were expected to harbour species-poor parasite communities consisting mainly of generalists acquired from the sympatric freshwater fish species, which would result in a nested pattern among the different component communities. However, an anti-nested pattern was found in the component communities of metazoan parasites of fishes from the Bothnian Bay. A likely explanation for the observed pattern is that there are specialist parasite species, the majority of which are cestodes, in some of the freshwater fish species which otherwise have depauperate parasite communities.

The short (UV) wavelength and the large beam cross-section of excimer lasers are expected to permit high resolution projection patterning and, for this reason, excimer laser deposition of Cu from organometallic precursors appears to be an interesting alternative for metallization in ULSI circuits. Unfortunately, the photolytic decomposition of those precursors leads to strong carbon contamination of the deposits. However, the valence state of the Cu in such deposits is unknown. In this paper, the reduction of two Cu (II) compounds, Cu(hmac)2 and Cu(hfac)2, under excimer laser irradiation in a hydrogen ambient is discussed. It is shown, with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, that, under our experimental conditions, Cu(hmac)2 is reduced to a Cu (I) compound while some of the Cu(hfac)2 appears to be reduced to the metallic state. Furthermore, reaction of the SiO2 substrate with the carbon from the Cu(hmac)2 precursor is observed.

While the observed number of hot, helium-rich degenerates is noticeably larger than that of their hydrogen-rich counterparts, the calibration of their effective temperatures has been comparatively much less trustworthy. The spectroscopic classification scheme introduced three years ago by Wesemael, Green, and Liebert (1985, hereafter WGL), and the crude temperature domains associated with each class remain, to this date, the only comprehensive effort at defining a temperature scale for DO stars. The current uncertainty in this is perhaps best epitomized by two objects, HD149499B and PG1034+001. The former belongs to a binary system which also contains a KO V primary, 2” away. The temperature determined for the degenerate secondary ranges from 85,000±15,000 K (Wray, Parsons, and Henize 1979) to 55,000±5000 K (Sion, Guinan, and Wesemael 1982, hereafter SGW). PG1034+001, on the other hand, is the prototype of the so-called hot DO spectroscopic class; WGL assign an uncertain temperature of 80,000±20,000 K to this object.

Plasma silicon nitride (P-SiN) films were prepared from SiH4/NH3 mixtures in a large volume microwave plasma (LMP) apparatus, at substrate temperatures T2 ranging from ambient to 250°C.Under otherwise nominally identical fabrication conditions, deposition rates were 10 to 25 times greater than those reported by others for radio- or audio-frequency plasmas.Based on film compositions, determined by elastic recoil detection (ERD), and measurements of such properties as density, refractive index, etch rate in dilute HF, and moisture permeation coefficient, our best P-SiN films (produced at T2 ≥ 200°C) are very similar to those reported in the literature.
